Stoops Fell Race & Rudolfs Red Nose Race – December 2013

With the majority of the juniors taking part in a number of cross country races before Christmas it was left to Christopher Brown to perform on the fells in the Curly Wurly Quarry run. On the same course a few weeks earlier Christopher had set a new course record. This time around he performed equally as well in a field of 70 starters to once again take 1st place in the U8’s race. Well done Christopher.

STOOPS RESULTS

Another consistent performer for the juniors Leon Passco was the only Clayton junior taking part in the Rudolfs Red Nose Race at Blackpool. Running in a field of 153 starters Leon produced a great performance to finish 12th overall and 2nd MU20.

Danger UXB

While running in Stainscomb recently (near Stan’s hut), Richard Bellaries came across a shell (i.e. bomb)! When he later led the police back to the spot, they confirmed that it was still live!!

So…. BEWARE. All the western end of Pendle was used as a live firing range in the past. Occasionally unexploded shells emerge from the peat – especially after periods of prolonged rain. If you see anything that looks like a bomb – it probably is. Follow Rich’s example: do not disturb and report it to the constabulary.

Fell Palladium update, and last call for your fell race results!

The end of the year will be upon us soon, and I have been updating the Fell Palladium competition results. While only people who have finished 6 or more FRA races will be eligible for the competition, I’ve included the results for everyone at the moment. So, if you have done any races that aren’t on my list, let me know – it may gain those precious extra points to get you that trophy, or at least give you some bragging rights over your peers!

The two top-spots are looking unassailable, with our captains leading, but there is hot competition for some of the minor placings and age-category awards.

JUNIOR SANTA RUN; Christmas Eve at Barley

…our traditional social run on Pendle. Meet at the Barley village car park for an 11.00 a.m start. This event is open to everybody (it’s free!) with the one exception that under 12s need to bring a parent or a nominated adult to run along with them. Apologies for this, it’s an insurance issue that I have no control over.

This is a purely social run, we’ll group you by ability but no-one gets left behind (the faster you run, the more you loop back!).

– This is the important bit; the weather is often poor in December. It’ll probably be cold or raining, it may well be both. The prevailing wind direction means that storm fronts often aren’t visible from down in the village, it can often be significantly worse when you get up on Pendle.

None of this is a problem if you’ve got the right kit on, so make sure you bring;

  • Windproof jacket.
  • Appropriate longsleeved baselayers (as many as you think you’ll need).
  • Hat (or buff) and gloves.
  • Long leg cover is optional but highly recommended if you usually feel the cold.
  • Decent trail/fell shoes.
  • ABSOLUTELY NO HOODIES; I WILL SEND YOU AWAY!!!

Hope to see you there (preferably wearing a santa hat!)

Ladies Cross Country, Hyndburn 14th December

A HUGE big MASSIVE thank you to all the ladies who ran today. A fantastic turnout to take on the mud and the adventurous twists offered by the woods of the Hyndeburn course. If this wasn’t enough to challenge us, on perhaps a final race before Christmas, one or two ladies turned up with an added challenge…hangovers, recovering injuries and recent recoveries from “the lurgy” .
Well done all ladies!

Next up is the Lancashire Champs Race at Witton Park Blackburn, Saturday 4th January 2014. 🙂

Cheers, Irene Roche
