True colours shining through

After all the epic endurance escapades last weekend, you’d think our members would be taking it easy. Nothing could be further from the truth. Business as usual from the tangerine army! Competing, winning and cheering each other on as always! The future’s bright.

Vernons 5k – 28 April

Otherwise known as the Welcome Inn Tuesday night series.  Just one member at this event, Tony Pilling who finished in 53rd place with a time of 23:25.

Vera Hirst 5k Cowm Race – 29 April

Irene Roche reports;

A few Clayton members ran at Whitworth, Cowme Res 5k. Andy O’Sullivan has a few of these mid-weekers going and raising good amounts of money for charity. Around 35 to 40 runners took part after a slightly delayed start due to late competitors arriving after traffic problems. But the delayed start was welcome as this was when the sun shone through after a dark cloud threatened to dampen our spirits! Laura Hesketh achieved First Lady and lots of other Clayton winning prizes/age categories. Totally enjoyable midweek event.

Cake Race – 2 May

An interesting moorland course with as much cake as you like to eat at the end. Who could ask for more? The course takes in open moorland scenery, industrial heritage, and Pennine farmland all in a hour or so. It is mainly on flagged paths, tracks and trails with the challenge of going over the Pennines and back.

Cake Race

Nerina Gill at the Cake Race. Photo by the Woodentops

The first mile or so is up hill onto the moors, which is very runnable, we call the path boat lane, since it was build to take the horses from the canal barges over the hills. Once up on the Moors you take the flagged path to Brun Cough Reservoir. The course is fast at this point, although care is needed as the flagstones can be slippy. The route splits the reservoirs at Wessenden Head and turns down toward Marsden where you can run fast down towards Marsden. The hardest part is yet to come as runners meet a long flight of stone steps that sweeps them down the side of the dam only to return them up a similar flight on the other side! Save a bit of energy for the climb back up onto the Moors, against the prevailing wind, you will be rewarded with stunning views across Marsden Moor.

The track brings runners back to the top of Boat lane and a good long run into the finish where cakes and tea await all finishers. All Runners are invited to bring a cake which will be entered into the Cake contest. Prizes for best tasting and best decoration. This is a tough race and you’ll really feel like you’ve earned the cake afterwards.

Three Clayton Ladies took part, Vicky Heys, Angela Shian and Nerina Gill.  Interestingly, Nerina has just entered the VLM ballot for next year… I do hope it wasn’t because of all the cake! Well done ladies!

Pendle Cloughs – 2 May

Just 30 hardy fell runners finished this tough, local race organised by Barlick Fell Runners. Course record holder Tom Brunt returned for a third time to take on this race. The conditions on the top of Pendle were cold, wet and very windy and were not ideal for record breaking times.  As it turned out, Tom had a comfortable win over Martin Hurst from Pudsey & Bramley who was closely followed home in third place by Max Wainwright from Helsby RC.

Great Hameldon Hill Race – 3 May

Despite a rather grim start to the day, 27 juniors and 57 senior members took part in the first of the Burnley and Pendle Grand Prix Series, with a fair few of both adults and children running in their first ever fell race.  The weather was kind to us and things cleared up nicely for the first race of the day. The juniors were out in force with many of them cheering and running alongside their siblings and team mates. They also formed an enthusiastic and exuberant cheer squad as they watched the seniors coming in.

Under 8s Race

15 children took part in the Under 8s running a fast and furious circuit of the Peel Park school playing field incorporating a bit of a hill at the rear just to add a little sting in the tail ( also added to the end of the longer races just to add a little spice!).

We had some fantastic runs from our juniors with first and third positions for Isaac Smith and Joshua McKay. A Masie Howarth and Jessica Bradley were are two girls in the race and both of them had great runs. Very well done!

Under 10s Race

22 children took part in the next age group race with two laps of the playing field to undertake.  Dexta Thompson took the lead and held onto it with great great and determination, managing to save a bit extra for a sprint to the finish to secure his win.

Jordan McDonald ran very well finishing in 4th place overall and first Male Junior. Irene Roche was 1st L55 and Karin Goss was 1st L65.

Great Hameldon Hill Race

I’d hoped for a weekend off from racing after the Three Peaks, but couldn’t resist competing at one of the best races in the P&B calendar. With the Peaks still in my legs, and a full week of comfort eating, I decided to ease myself into the race and ran with the Liverpool runner, Richard Burney for the majority of the way up Hameldon Hill. I held back until the summit, hoping to pull away on the way back down… As it turns out, Richard is a 15 minute 5K runner. I ended the race in 2nd place with a time of 38:45 – almost 2 minutes quicker than last years time. So very happy with the result! We had a great turn out, and had some great performances from the younger members in Jordan McDonald, and some impressive junior displays too. A top event to kick of the Summer racing calendar!

After suffering from a stress fracture since before Christmas, I’ve just started to get back into running in the past month or so. I know the Hameldon route well so felt ok and reached the summit with a lady from Trawden in sight. On the descent however she pulled away and I was over taken by a lady from Accrington road runners. I thought I might have been able to catch them but I’m not too good on the downhill so they stayed out of reach! I also finished 2 minutes quicker than last year and enjoyed being cheered on by a group of Clayton juniors at the end! Look forward to more races this summer and being part of the relay team for my first time in the Calderdale Way.

Our Ladies ‘A’ team were 2nd and our Mens ‘A’ Team were 1st.  Well done everyone.

Coniston Fell Racer – 3 May

Report by Peter Browning

Coniston Fell Race

Coniston Fell Race – a return to wintery conditions. Photo by Coniston Fell Runners

Five Clayton Harriers made the journey north to the southern Lakes for the annual Coniston Fell Race, the first of the truly classic Lakeland races. The race is traditionally held under blue skies and lovely spring sunshine, but not this year. We were well and truly back in winter conditions, with snow falling on the tops, high winds and poor visibility. Following recent comments from some quarters, if ever there was a reminder of the need to carry full kit in all fell races as outlined by the FRA, this was it. Former top ten Coniston finisher Tim Edward led the Clayton contingent home, followed by Peter Browning, Andrew Firth, Mark Taylor and Peter Dugdale. Full results have still not been published, but finishing safely was the simple aim of most competitors.

Not completely sure on results as yet, but they all gave 100% . Well done juniors. Dexta ran halfway round with only one shoe, and Sophie ran down the hillshouting “I’m gonna fall!” but had an amazing upright finish. Curtis didn’t run after yesterdays track meet in Preston but Briony did and secured another 1st position. Well done everyone!

In fact, Briony won her fourth championship race in a row making her the 2015 English FRA champion with two races still to go to further consolidate her victory.  Congratulations to a brilliant runner and absolute credit to our club!

parkrun roundup

It was the 150th run at Burnley, our unofficial club parkrun, and both seniors and juniors were out in force, many of them warming up for other events over the weekend.  King of the parkrun, Mr Jonathan Pye, was spotted taking to the fells the following day at the Great Hameldon Hill Race. Rumours that he presented a bemused race official with a carefully laminated barcode at the finish line are greatly exaggerated! It was a paced event so lots of PBs and it was also great to see Danny Collinge & Jonathon Pye giving Clayton Juniors one to one coaching to help them improve!

The storm!

As always achievements galore this weekend! The cold, rain and snow on Saturday didn’t deter our members from a massive turnout on a busy weekend.

Three Peaks Fell Race

Our first placed finisher, Christopher Holdsworth, in 37th reported on his debut at the Three Peaks:

‘It’s not quite easy to put the 3 Peaks experience into words, which is possibly the best way to describe it..

Although I paced myself up Pen Y Ghent, I felt strong up until Ribblehead. Whernside was tough, but the descent destroyed my legs and turned the bones in my feet to rubble. From 15th at the top of Whernside, I fell to 37th coming off the top of Ingleborough where I had no strength in my legs. All the experienced runners tried to coach me through the pain, and all the spectators helped me round with Jelly Babies and water to a 3:24:21 finish.

I didn’t quite meet the targets I set, but I’m very pleased with my first attempt at the 3 Peaks. Will be back with a more experienced head, more distance in the legs and comfier shoes next year.’

The unmissable Breton Holdsworth at the Three Peaks

The unmissable Breton Holdsworth at the Three Peaks

Kieran Carr broke the M70 course record with a time of 4:44:18; Katy Thompson completed her 21st Three Peaks; and despite a fall in the lane up Pen-y-Ghent and a full length dive in the river President Dave Scott still managed to complete his 48th Three Peaks. A tremendous achievement by all 23 of our members who completed this Club Championship race in very testing conditions.

‘The Fellsman is a high level traverse covering more than 60 miles over very hard rugged moorland. The event climbs over 11,000 feet in its path from Ingleton to Threshfield in the Yorkshire Dales. Most of the route is over privately owned land, the use of which is secured by the organisers for the weekend only. This being the case, the route does not follow well defined footpaths, so the entrants’ navigational skills with a map and compass are tested as well as their physical fitness. Because of this, only fit and experienced walkers or runners should enter.

Five Clayton Harriers took part in this epic and gruelling event; Martin Terry, Simon Halliday, Andy Armstrong, Nicholas Olszewski and Adrienne Olszewska. After a period of dry and warm weather any expectations of an “easy” run went out the window when the forecast was for sleet with snow on the hilltops and sub zero temperatures, and, we were all advised to ensure our mandatory kit was going to be warm enough. In fact, quite a number of competitors were retired because of the weather. There was heavy rain, hail, snow and the temperature fell to around minus five on the tops overnight. It was harsh. The terrain is rugged and you are really put through your paces traversing the unremitting bogginess of the moorlands. It is a seriously tough event.

Adrienne Olszewska at The Fellsman

Adrienne Olszewska at The Fellsman

Nicholas and Adrienne were taking part for the first time. Nick was aiming to complete the course on the same day and Adrienne was aiming for around 24 hours. Both of us just missed our targets as the weather gave us a battering and the bogs were the stuff of nightmares! Having said that, the mind is a funny thing and mere hours later, despite hating the event for much of the time you are doing it, you find yourself thinking about how you can do things better or differently next time! Simon Halliday and Martin Terry completed in around 14 hours, Andy Armstrong in 14 hours 50, Nick in 15 hours 54, and Adrienne 24.5 hours.’

West Nab – 18 April

Report by Andrew Holt

The third FRA English junior championships race took place across the M62 in Meltham. As usual it was well organised and well attended. The course is similar to the FRA route at Pendle, with an uphill start, longish flat straight and a sharp ramp upwards into the moors. The weather was sunny, warm and hard underfoot with the only mud to be found in the occasional bog and small river crossing. Unusually for a fell race a good percentage of this course is singletrack making overtaking difficult.

Clayton juniors were represented by three runners, Dexta and Liberty Thompson, running only their second FRA fell race, and Briony Holt. Dexta was first away, pacing himself well along the single track and overtaking where and when he could. Finishing we think (photo counting) an amazing fourth. (he was nearly half way back at the start!)

West Nab Fell Race

Briony and Liberty ran next, climbing further up and around the farm. Liberty was rightly cautious about starting too quickly and started towards the rear of the group. Liberty held a steady position around the course, even gaining ground on more experienced athletes. Obviously feeling tired at the end, Liberty finished strongly in approx 25th position, (counted via photos on Woodentops) in a competitive field on a difficult course.

West Nab Fell Race

Liberty Thompson in the U14 Race at West Nab. Photo by the Woodentops

This was Briony’s second attempt at West Nab, but first at the longer u14 route. After the usual dash out of the field Briony was placed 5th or 6th the, but gained ground and led from from the first downhill stretch, and had a healthy lead at the half way point. A strong challenge from two athletes including last years champion, provided an excellent finish, with Briony narrowly claiming a victory via a sprint in the starting field.

Briony has only to finish one of three races to be joint english champion, and she’s won three out of three so far.

Lakeland Trails Hawkshead – 18 April

Starting and finishing at Hawkshead, the 17km Hawkshead Trail Race, 17km Hawkshead Trail Challenge and 10km Hawkshead Trail Run follow circuits along well marked and marshalled footpaths and bridleways, taking in panoramic views of Lake Windermere and the surrounding peaks of the Coniston Hills, the Langdales and most of the Lakeland fells. All of the routes take in the infamous, mile long, near vertical, killer climb of the “Coffin Trail”! Underfoot conditions are generally good, particularly for those used to off-road running.

Clayton Lady, Sophie McIntosh tackled the 10k. She described it as a tough one with an extra 1.7km (making it 11.7km), not to mention the 1 mile vertical climb called ‘the coffin trail’. However, the scenery was beautiful and she really enjoyed it.

Podium 5k – 18 April

The sun shone but a cold easterly wind hit the runners on each of the 5 laps in the April version of the PODIUM 5K at Barrowford, Lancashire. Three Clayton men took part in the B race.

Report by Richard Stevenson

After missing out on a sub-18 for 5k at Hollingworth Lake 2 weeks ago, I thought I’d give the Podium 5k a go. I’d heard it was a very flat and fast course. We got there early to watch the A race; boy these guys are impressively fast! Then straight after was the B race with a few from the first race kindly helping out as pacers for us. My tactic was to try and stay just in front of the 18 minute pacer which I just about managed then it was down to an eyeball out sprint for the line. Oh yes 17:49! A new PB and my first sub-18 minute 5k. Well done to the fellow Clayton runners there John and Andy. I know Andy was very pleased with his time.

Report from Andy Bradley

Podium 5k perfect for PBs! No pacer for someone hoping to beat 20 mins, not sure some of the a race guys could go that slow!! Asked a couple of lads what they were aiming for and tried to hang on to them, just managed it! Enjoyed the encouragement from the Trawden and clayton attendees, always a help in the last lap when your legs feel like lead. will hope its less windy time as I think I can go (a little bit) faster. £4 well spent and loved watching the a race, some proper runners there!

Y Moelwyn Fell Race – 18 April

Race report from Paul Shackleton

A bakers dozen of Clayton-le-Moors Harriers were at the first British Fell Championships race of the year at Blaenau Ffestiniog on Saturday for the Ras Y Moelwyn race; 16.9k (10 miles) with 850 metres of ascent. Under a cloudless sky we went off down the road from the town centre and climbed up through the old quarries to Moelwyn Mawr at 770 metres. After a steep descent, we then climbed Moelwyn Bach, down a rocky and boggy descent to the Llyn Stwlan dam where the locals offered us jelly babies and flapjacks and then climbed again to Moel Yr Hydd. A fast descent and a run back through the quarry tracks and we were at the finish. The race is a classic! Finley Wild won the men’s race with Rob Hope second and Jasmine Parris was the first lady. Clayton men were led home by Neil Hardiman and fist Clayton lady was Jean Brown. 362 runners took part in the race.

Fell Running

Just a quick report from the Coledale Horseshoe. I had the weekend off work and Burnley were playing at 5pm, so I decided to do some preparation for the Three Peaks Race in two weeks. I left home at 8am, the weather was terrible with driving rain and I thought to myself I must be insane going up to the lakes. I arrived at Braithwaite where there were strong winds but the sun was out with snow on the Mountains. So the event was shortened because of the snow, and the route was changed slightly. There were quite a few Clayton members running Neil Hardiman, Barb Savage, Jean Brown, David Bagot, myself, Andy Firth, Pete Browning, Mark Nutter, Peter Dugdale and Andrew. Overall it was a very enjoyable day.

This is described as a flat, fast and scenic route though Lancaster, unsurprisingly, going over 3 bridges

Adam Hamer described this race as: ” a tough one because of the weather but relatively flat. The first 5k wasn’t too bad with the wind behind us but as it was an out and back again type race the gales were in our faces which made tired legs even more tired for the final 5k. Overall the race would have been average-okay but catching the bad weather made it pretty tough.”

Sophie McIntosh added; “Those steps in the middle were a surprise that my legs did not enjoy!”

Also taking part were Peter Butterworth , Jeffrey Pickup and Julie Toman.

Plusnet Yorkshire Half Marathon – 12 April

Boasting a field of over 6000 runners, this popular half marathon takes place in Sheffield. Cancelled last year due to a lack of water for runners, this year’s race started without a hitch.

Tanya Bunkham’s kit ready for the Plusnet Yorkshire Half Marathon

Flying the Clayton-le-Moors Harriers flag at the Plusnet Yorkshire Half Marathon, Tanya Bunkham reported; “Sheffield half marathon done and dusted in 1:56:28. Disappointed in my time, but the first 5 miles were seriously uphill and the wind was brutal. Can’t believe in two weeks’ time I’ll be going twice as far, eeek!”

Well Done Tanya

Mynd Mac – 12 April

Jean Brown was running in this fell race  which she describes as a lovely 4.5 miles on the Long Mynd – very windy and lots of climbing. She was 3rd Lady overall.

The race rises out of the beautiful Carding Mill Valley, there is a stiff climb up over Stanyeld followed by a good old gallop down a north-easterly spur of Haddon Hill into the delightful Batch Valley, immediately leaving via Long Batch – long by name and nature, and one of the lesser used routes on the Longmynd. An entertaining path (now you see it, now you don’t – but waymarked on the day) crosses a stream several times as it hauls up to a pool and cairn, and a track which runs parallel to the Saxon drove of The Portway.

A few hundred yards further and the turn for home with a lovely, undulating run over Haddon and spectacular views for those with the time and inclination to enjoy them. Just when you thought it was all over, one last climb up to the remarkable Iron Age fort on Bodbury Hill and then along the top of the hill before sweeping down, back into Carding Mill Valley – job done!

Parkrun roundup

Apologies if I miss any far flung parkrun tourists this week. The consolidated club feature that finds you all for me is not working at the moment so the results have been gathered manually. I have only checked the parkrun events that are regularly attended by our members.

Burnley parkrun

Leading the way at the Burnley parkrun. Photo by Bryn Barnes

Just having a look through the local event results we had a stonking set of results at the Burnley parkrun. Top ten finishes for four of our male runners, first female finisher, and eight junior runners with new PBs for Sophie Ashworth and Nathan Kewin. New PBs also for senior runners Andrew Webster and John Wilcock who finished a mere second apart – bit of a race was it?

Shiny new PBs also for Barry Mitchell and Eileen Jones, which just goes to show that you can continue to push and improve whatever age you are!

Well done to all of our parkrunners!

No April Fools

It’s a cracking roundup this Easter weekend.  No eggs, just wins! You lot have been busy, many running more than once and in different disciplines.  We’ve had some great results. There’s been fell, trail, road and lots and lots of tangerine.  The future’s bright!

Pete Hartley Memorial Liver Hill Fell Race – 31 March

Report From Chris Funnell

It might have sleeting and gusting winds but that didn’t dampen the buzz of excitement as the Pete Hartley Memorial Liver Hill Fell Race heralded the start of British Summertime and the eagerly awaited return of mid-week racing.

There was a strong display of orange and white with 22 Clayton members (including El P) making up a total turnout of 158 runners in the starting line up on the sports field at the Marl Pits. Due to the high winds the only part of the pre-race briefing I managed to hear was “…you finish on the race track”. In the end after some deliberation and consultation with fellow Clayton members I opted to pack my cag in my bum bag rather than wear it as I remained optimistic about the conditions once we got going.

I remembered the race from last year and the need to try to get a reasonable position in the initial charge across the field which then bottlenecks into a narrow path up an embankment that quickly churns up like a wildebeest river crossing. Once clear of the embankment there was a steady climb of about 500 feet over the next mile or so before reaching the open moor and a game of Russian roulette over the boggy sections commenced. Seeing others sink in front of me I successfully negotiated two bogs but succumbed to a third immediately sinking up to my shins. At this point the front runners including Jacob Boyle could be seen running back from the summit. After rounding the summit and the initial descent you were then back on to the boggy moorland and this time with a head wind to contend with. The route had at least 4 or 5 stiles which on the return leg had to be negotiated with runners on the out leg. Depending on timing these at least provided a couple of welcome seconds of respite. The final mile was an enjoyable descent and the chance to stretch out although in the final section only just managing to stay upright (more though good luck than good footwork). It was then back on to the playing fields and a cordoned route onto the race track and a final sprint to the finish where a young and enthusiastic race helper congratulated me and thrust a Cadburys Crème Egg into my hand. It doesn’t get better than this I thought. This is an excellent organised race held this year in memory of the sad loss of the excellent fell runner, photographer and Rossendale Harrier, Pete Hartley.

Katy Thompson added; ” I think Pete must have been smiling down on us because, although the wind was still cold and strong, the rain and snow from earlier in the day held off for the race.

As usual, I was very slow on the first climb but came to across the muddy fields and managed to pass George.   There are a number of tricky stiles to negotiate, made even more difficult when you meet the front runners coming back. I could see Linda Lord on the loop to the summit of Liver Hill, but she was too far ahead to catch.

The first half of the return run is much more uphill than you realise on the way out, then it’s a fast downhill on tracks and through the woods. I passed El Presidente on the way down, but he got me back on the slight incline just before the final fields. (Very ungentlemanly of you, Dave!).

After the kamikaze descent familiar from the cross country, it was across the muddy fields to the finish where Denise was handing out crème eggs to everyone. Looking down at my legs, they were so muddy that I couldn’t tell where my running bottoms ended and the skin began!”

Littleborough 5k Road Series – 1 April

Five club members braved atrocious weather conditions to compete in the first race of the popular Littleborough 5K Road Race series organised by Cannonball Events. This fast course with very little climb is a great opportunity to test out your racing legs and push for a personal best. Ninety nine runners took part in this event.

Congratulations to Team Roche who cleaned up the V55 category taking home the accolade for the male (John) and female (Irene) so well done to them. Three other members also braved the miserable conditions to race; Jean Knightley, Leanne Cottam and Nikki Kay.

Well done to Nikki Kay in particular who managed to knock a whole 5 minutes off her best time in this event last year – looks like all her hard work in training for the London Marathon is really paying off.

A great atmosphere, a village event where everyone is welcome. Lovely quiet rural lanes virtually traffic free. One of my fave road races.”

Pendle Fell Race – 4 April

Senior Race

On a glorious Easter Saturday a fantastic turnout of 41 Clayton-le-Moors Harriers lined up for this classic local fell race; a good few of them running their first fell race. Clayton-le-Moors Harriers won the Lancashire Team Trophy and fielded an impressive 8 complete mens teams and a ladies team. We had vet category wins for Alan Life, Pete Booth, Irene Roche and Katy Thompson.  Chris Holdsworth had a great race finishing in 6th place overall and 2nd place Lancashire Championship.

First time fell racer Danny Collinge said; “I have one word for it, and one word only…HARD!”

Competing in only her second fell race, Helen Burnett reported; “It was great to take part in the race as a member of Clayton up a hill I can see from my window at home. As a new fell runner and newish Clayton member, I received loads of support and encouragement from the long standing fell running members who were both running and marshalling. Great family atmosphere with the kids races first and then lovely to see the friendly banter of George and Katy Thompson in the first climb up Pendle, an inspiration for me and Dave! I did enjoy the steep climbs but need to toughen up for the downhill and was pleased with a strong finish down the last mile on the road. Enjoyed a well earned shandy afterwards in the Pendle Inn with a lot of the Claytoners. I’m proud to have done a race where local friends have said “nutters” and “mental”.

Dave Burnett added, “Yet again I have been shown what fell racing is all about, losing over 20 places on the second ascent was soul destroying – I’m either going to get fitter or carry Numchucks next year.

First time fell racer, Matthew Duckworth described his race as “awful” but added he can’t wait for the next one!

Another new fell racer, Michelle Butschock said; “This was my 1st race on Pendle and it feels like a real accomplishment. Had all sorts of negative thoughts in my head going up but once at the trig I must’ve had the biggest smile on my face!! The marshal at the trig was fantastic, really encouraging, all the Claytoners were at the finish cheering me on inmy battle to the line with another runner, the whole atmosphere through the day was fab. ”

Shrouded in mist and murk, the weather was a far cry from the glorious sunshine of the Pendle Fell races but that didn’t deter us. 28 club members, including 5 of our junior members, took part in this fast, flat 5k race.  There was a great win by Danny Collinge taking Clayton to team victory with Jacob Watson and Jordon McDonald. Club Road Palladium – Latest Standings

In the Road Palladium Competition members receive points for competing in any road race. There are separate competitions for Ladies and Men. Points are awarded as in the following example: If five men members compete in a road race then the first man home is awarded five points; the second man home is awarded four points; and so on.

Latest standings show Irene Roche leading the Ladies table and Jacob Watson leading the Mens table.

Runners of the Month

Well done George Pier for winning February senior runner of the month for his great performance at Muddy Shoes & at the Mid Lancs League Cross Country races.

Well done junior runner of the month Ryan Clarke for a brilliant run at Winter Warmer 10K.

Kit Manager

The club is looking for a new Kit Manager to take responsibility for our junior and senior clothing range. So, if you want to play a key part in making Team Clayton the smartest team around this is your chance! The job involves sourcing and designing new lines, storing the stock, as well as selling to members. The club wants to move to offering electronic payment as well as providing an online shop, so some computer skills are needed for the role.

We need more help to make our club even better. If you think that you could be our Kit Manager, please get in touch with either myself or any committee member.

Celebrate Good Times

It’s  been all about awards, accolades and achievements this week.  We’ve had wins and top placings in many different events and a packed house at our club presentation evening. It was great to reflect on the successes of last year and be inspired to do even better this year.

Presentation Night

Club Chairman, James Hickie

“Our Presentation of Awards Evening on Saturday filled the 1882 lounge at Turf Moor, as 130 people enjoyed our social event of the year. Our Juniors and John Roche’s training sessions are the driving force behind the success of our club – it was great to see our Juniors and their families at the event for the first time as well as a table of new members who have joined through the Beginners’ Training group. The club’s thanks for such a successful night are due to Social Secretary Marie Greenwood, Trophy Custodian Harry Manning, Pete Booth for helping with setting out the venue, Media Manager Adrienne Olszewska for the Slide Show, Coach John Roche for the Tangerine Training Video, Rossendale & Pendle MRT for attending and David Belshaw for taking the photographs. I look forward to our next social gathering on 23rd May during the Weekend of Running.”

Club Awards

Clayton-le-Moors Harriers Presentation Evening – Club President Dave Scott and Breton Holdsworth resplendent in orange as always!

Oh what a night! A full house for this year’s club presentation evening. Junior awards were included for the first time and a great many of them attended with their families making it a very joyous and exuberant event. It was great to see such a wide mix of members there from stalwart members of many years, to recent recruits happy to join in the celebrations. And did I mention the juniors? Lots of them were there too!

Clayton Juniors

Clayton-le-Moors Juniors breathing new life into an ageing club

There were awards and accolades for our senior members across Fell, Road, and Cross Country disciplines as well as awards for outstanding achievements, outstanding performance, most improvement and most promising newcomer to the club.

Junior Coach Marion Wilkinson talked about the start of the journey for the junior section 6 years ago, and the aim  to build a group of young runners worthy of wearing the clayton vest. With the help of 2 great coaches; Andy Armstrong and Jason Pier, we are definitely on the road to success, and the grant awarded to us by Sport England will further help us to make our mark, enabling our junior section to be the best locally and ensuring that these young people remain with the club into adulthood.

The juniors received awards for outstanding achievements, overall improvement and team performance.

Cartmel Trail Race 18km – 21 March

Starting and finishing at Cartmel Racecourse, the 18km Cartmel Trail Race, takes an on off-road journey through some of the most scenic and varied countryside in the Lake District, along a ‘Beauty and Beast’ of a course. The trails are mainly along waymarked and marshalled footpaths and bridleways, giving panoramic views of both Morecambe Bay and the surrounding peaks. Underfoot conditions are variable with a bit of everything. Good fast sections, but it can be very sticky in places, especially if wet!

Lakeland Trails

Team Holdsworth at the Cartmel Lakeland Trails Race

Our three Clayton men put in three amazing performances. Christopher Holdsworth was the winner of the race, with Breton Holdsworth following in fourth position (1st V40), and Ian Greenwood finishing in a very respectable 16th place (2nd V50). 185 runners took part in the event.

Report from race winner, Christopher Holdsworth

“After a few frustrating months spending time on the side lines nursing injuries and missing races, I was very relieved to get back to racing – and a big one too in Lakeland Trail’s Cartmel! I began the race pulling out a minute or so lead on the Inov-8 athlete Ben Abdelnoor, only for him to cut it back around the 5-6 mile mark due to a navigation mishap and him fairing better at the tougher terrain. Once we got back out onto the road, I was able to regain a comfortable lead which I fought very hard to maintain. There was a sting in the tail right at the end which allowed me to gain sight of Ben in the distance. Not wanting to let my lead slip at the end, I put in one last effort to push through with a 1:10:15 finish, with 2nd a minute behind in 1:11:15. Breton, who had me worried prior to the race having put in great efforts at Flower Scar and Dentdale, put in a brilliant effort finishing in 4th and over 2 minutes faster than his previous Cartmel best. Was a fantastic race and top event – very looking forward to Hawkshead!”

Sarah Angelone ran a blistering race and said; ” This was a fantastic event in some lovely sunshine for once. The Clayton blokes were amazing and as they were all headin past me it made me motivated to keep ‘looking like and athlete’.I was really chuffed with my time and based on today’s performance I could actually get under my 4 hour target for the marathon. I would be over the moon if I got a time like this!”

Well done guys and gal and the very best of luck for those of you going on to the London marathon in a few weeks time.

Coniston 14 – Saturday 21 March

The organisers of the Coniston 14 claim that it is probably the most beautiful road race in Britain. Each year it attracts some 1600 runners and has a reputation for being one of the best organised small races in the country. The Race is organised by an enthusiastic committee of volunteers from Coniston village.

Two of our members took part in this year’s race, Tanya Bunkham ad Graham Kissack. Tanya Bunkham reported; “Someone ordered Summer for this today – the sun was cracking the flags!! The scenery was beautiful, but the hills kept appearing from nowhere – especially in the 2nd half.”

Well done to both of you!

Clayton Ladies

Clayton Ladies L-R Eloise Pemberton, Elizabeth Mullen, Bianca Bennett, Amanda Duffy.

Bianca Bennett reported; “The race was fantastic. All the Clayton ladies today stuck together, supported one another and went out with an attitude to achieve and work hard. The results showed with 5th and 6th places achieved and fantastic PB’s too. Was great that some of the gents turned up to support too.”

Eloise commented; “Today’s race was really enjoyable and a proud race for the Clayton ladies! Like Bianca said we set off together to achieve and show Blackpool what we are made of. Someone pointed out that most participants were wearing long sleeves and jackets and us clayton ladies went boldly and proudly in our vests!!! I enjoyed running in stride alongside Bianca throughout the race and found strength in numbers really worked for us today. Fantastic results from the ladies today, beautiful weather and support from family, friends and our fellow Clayton gents made today the perfect 10k race.”

Goal-Den- Girls 10K

Eloise Pemberton sprinting to the finish at the Goal-Den-Girls 10k

Elizabeth Mullen added; “Well Bianca hit the nail on the head, great teamwork and support all around and hopefully we did Team Clayton proud. Definitely proud of ourselves. Like Bianca said, we are still waiting on the official results but as far as we know we all got PBs and for some of us it was our first race as a Clayton-le-Moors Harrier. Personally, John’s speed seasons have payed off for me especially on the final 2 miles where there were a couple of slight inclines where I managed to overtake. Really impressive ladies. Well done!”

Amanda Duffy said; ” A great day as the sun was shining, very friendly people, we’ll run by all clayton ladies, a nice easy run down towards bispham and slightly undulating on the way back.”

Well done ladies!

Heptonstall Fell Race – Sunday 22 March

Heptonstall is a modern classic of a fell race covering 15 miles of rough moorland, pasture and bridleways above Hebden Bridge. Originally conceived by the Heptonstall Hurriers it combines traditional features (entry on the day, home made soup & flapjack in the beer garden) with the added twist of an optional pre race runners service and a blessing by the local vicar. Five Clayton members made the start on a gorgeous sunny day.

Two Crosses Circuit – Sunday 22 March

Each year the East Lancs Branch of the LDWA organise this 17 and 25 mile challenge event. Both routes visit the Roman Cross at Affetside and the Pilgrim’s cross on Holcombe Moor above the Rossendale valley.

Clayton Ladies Katy Thompson and Adrienne Olszewska took part.

Adrienne had this to say; “The weather was glorious on the day, a bit unexpected as the last of these events just a couple of weeks ago was beset by a blizzard on the moors at Holcombe.  I must say, it was a bit of a novelty being able to see where I was going for once.  Sadly, not much faster. Supervet Katy dashed off and completed the 25 mile circuit in 5 hours 10 minutes, and I plodded in after 6 hours and 33 mins. Well organised event with a great route.”

Navigation training – call for leaders!

We would really like to put on some navigation training for club members – ideally sessions of a couple of hours each weekend over the course of a few weeks. Since there are a number of people in the club who are already qualified as mountain leaders etc., we thought we would see if any of them were keen to support club members by leading some training. We would expect most sessions will also require a number of helpers who are competent navigators.

So, if you are qualified to train people in navigation skills, or a competent navigator potentially able to help out, please do let Jean Brown or Dave Motley know (contact info here). We will pay expenses for the leaders as some resources would be needed.

Once we know who may be able to help we will work out how and when we can deliver and publicise to club members… so if you are keen to learn please do watch this space.

Flower Scar Fell Race – 7 March

Men’s Race – 325 Runners

17 Clayton Harriers took part in the Flower Scar Fell Race, a counter for the FRA English Championships. It is described as a gem of a race with steep climbs, rough moor and fast paths, typifying all that’s best about South Pennine fell running. Starting close to Todmorden town centre, this race takes you to the parts of Todmorden that other races don’t reach, for this year the route will be partially flagged. Breton Holdsworth was the first (and most noticeable) Harrier home crossing the finish in 74th place with at time of 46:06.

A special mention for Kieran Carr who was the first Vet70 finisher at this event.

Fell Captain Dave Motley reported, “Well this was first English Championship Fell Race and what a cracking day for it. The course had been altered slightly to cope with the number of competitors but in essence it was very similar to the usual route.  After a lung bursting start across the park and up through the woods the field was strung out and this continued as the route became steeper to Flower Scar summit. The descent back to the road was welcome as oxygen debt was on me before having to tackle a 2nd climb, then back through the farms and down the forestry path to the start.

We had a really good turn out from the lads and some great runs and the race was reflected afterwards with a pint or 2 in the Hare & Hounds. For me this race is what running is about, testing yourself against the elite in the sport, great banter and a pint to finish”

Women’s Race – 148 Runners

Ladies Captain, Jean Brown, reported, “We had a recent record of nine ladies out racing at the Flower Scar race which is the first of the English Championship races for 2015.  Although one of the short races, it was tough – a lot of runnable terrain with the odd steeper section, a wonderful descent off Flower Scar itself then a sting in the tail with a final climb before the run down to the finish. Very muddy in places but could have been worse. Next up is Club fell champs counter, Black Combe, next weekend – then the Welsh British Champs race on 18 April.”
