Chris Holdsworth interview

“Stay humble, don’t get an ego and let your racing do the talking. Work hard but buy regular Dominos pizzas to make up for it.”

James Boult interviews Chris Holdsworth on his return from his Team GB debut at the World Mountain Running Championships in Italy.

World Mountain Running Long Distance Championships Italy 2017

Chris, so far 2017 has seen you reach some incredible achievements; your performances at the Howarth Hobble and the Yorkshire Three Peaks; Heptonstall Fell Race and Griezdale Trail Marathon course records and obviously your International call up. To what do you owe your success?

A lot of patience, consistent training and not expecting too much too soon, setting achievable goals and steadily working towards them – these then form the basis of working towards a big race or performance. I think it’s important to enjoy your training, if you do then the results will follow. For me it was all about seeing how fast I could run up hills (Strava CR addiction began here), or seeing how fast I could get round one of my favourite hilly routes. I wasn’t overly concerned with results or who I was or wasn’t beating at first, racing was just to enjoy the results of hard training. Enjoy the progress you can make on the things you do enjoy/are good at, and then focus on the things you think you’re not so good at later. Your training will then begin to show consistent progression and you’ll see rare plateaus and more success.

Taking it all back to the beginning then, what first made you start running and who, if any, was your inspiration?

Uncle Breton. I had just finished University and had been running more regularly (2 or 3 times a week) and had done my first parkrun in Leeds, finishing at about the 21 minute mark. He persuaded me to come out running with him and join him on a few of the Clayton fell sessions. The first one of which was up Boulsworth, where he, Neil Worswick and a few others well and truly beasted me! I was struggling to keep up and couldn’t run one step up Boulsworth, but enjoyed it nonetheless and knew fell running was for me!

Snowdon International Mountain Race 2017

Snowdon International Mountain Race 2017

At the beginning of this journey did you ever think you would be pulling on an England vest?

Not at all, I didn’t know it was even possible to run for your country. In fact, I didn’t really know much about anything up until a year or so ago! I try not to think about qualifying for England or GB vests, race wins or who I should or shouldn’t be beating as it can eat away at you and make you not even want to start the race due to nerves! I try to target things like getting certain times, or course records as it not too dissimilar to my training runs then. That way it’s just you racing against the clock and anything else you may achieve is a happy bonus at the end.

What does an average training week in the life of Chris Holdsworth look like?

When training for a big race, most of which are quite long distance these days, I aim to try get up to 70 miles for the week. If I’m struggling with niggles, ailments or fatigue I’ll drop it to 50-60. To break it down, my week would look like:

Monday: steady 8-10 hilly miles (1000ft or more) where I will be trying to push on up or down the hills if my body feels okay after the weekend.
Tuesday: ideally some sort of rep session. This will either be 0.5 or 1 mile sustained hard efforts.
Wednesday: midweek hilly miles – this will ideally be between 12-16 miles and 1200ft – 2000ft depending on the route. Effort will be steady – to hard
Thursday: tempo 8 mile run or hill rep session if I didn’t manage a session on Tuesday.
Friday: rest day – just as important as any other to let the week’s training settle in and muscles recover
Saturday: race day or tempo 13 miles, preferably quick hilly trails or roads.
Sunday: hilly steady long run between 15 – 24 miles depending on the distance I’m training for.

Do you have any rituals you go through before a big event?

Always two big bowls of Frosties cereal, but proper athletes usually go for porridge. Go for whatever suits you and makes you feel light and quick on the day.

Running wise I try to reduce the mileage and quicken my cadence and try to get my body race ready. I will often throw in a run over from Widdop res and push my legs round quickly back down to Gorple to get them firing.

How has your International call up affected your current training regime, and your life in general?

It’s been tough.. I’ve not eased off on my training since January. First I trained for the Hobble, next the Three Peaks, after that it was the call up for England with Sedbergh and Snowdon, and of course lastly Giir di Mont for Great Britain. It’s been a long hard slog to get here with constant training, and mostly it’s my friends or family that are most affected as I will ruin most occasions as I have to get a run in.

Going to a city for the weekend? I’ll have to get my run in first. Friends wanting to drink on Saturday? Sorry, I can’t.. Have to do a long run the next day or have a race.

My friends and family put up with my schedule all the time and I thank them a lot for it. Most of all my girlfriend Sophie, who has heard me moan about every niggle imaginable, put up with me being away for countless hours whilst I run, and me always telling her we can’t do something with friends or family because I have to stay fit and/or go for a long run. I couldn’t be the runner I am without someone supportive like her.

How has your coach, Chris Singleton, influenced your running?

He has helped push me out of my comfort zone and made sure I’ve kept on schedule to meet race goals. I pretty much used to just do tempo runs everyday, but he’s helped introduce a little structure that has benefited some of the aspects I was weaker at.

I have never been a descender, but at the recent Snowdon race I was one of the quickest back down. Evidence that the coaching is working and I’m moving in the right direction!

What is your biggest goal?

If I can compete regularly at the top end of the sport I’ll be very happy when I look back at what I have achieved. However, if I was to answer the question properly, I’d have to say a win at one of the UKs biggest mountain races would be up there. Another goal would be to finish in the top three of the English fell championships.

We all have favourite events, races we look forward to more than any each year; what is your favourite race and why?

Has to be the Three Peaks for me. There is no other race like it and the atmosphere is brilliant. It will be a race I will hopefully come back each year to and see if I can chip away at my personal best time.

Three Peaks 2017

Three Peaks 2017

What is your best race to date, and what is your best running achievement so far?

A running theme here, but possibly this year’s Three Peaks race! I wanted to break the sub 3 hour mark, so to finish sub 2:55 and in 3rd was very unexpected. I’m also pretty proud of breaking Morgan Donnelly’s record at Lowther Trail last year and Marcus Scottney’s CR at Greendale marathon this year.

I think a question we all want an answer to is; do you still get nervous when you line up waiting for the start?

Absolutely.. If you’re not nervous on the start line then I don’t think you’re taking the race seriously! Anyone and everyone can be beaten on the day, so you have to be focused and mentally prepared for the race ahead – the nerves are a by-product of this!

Is there any member, past or present, that you look up to in the club, and speaking of clubs, what made you pick Clayton-le-Moors Harriers as your club?

We are blessed with a lot of legends at our club thanks to its long and illustrious history. When I first joined the club it was clear we had a very successful period with a lot of these members now competing as successful veterans in their respective categories. The one most relevant in influencing myself and how I progress through attempting to try and seek similar success would be Garry Wilkinson. He has been there and done it all, competing in the same fell and mountain races as I’m currently doing, many for the first time. I’ve still a lot of work to do if I want to achieve the same level of success as he did!

As I mentioned above, there are so many club legends at Vet level in Clayton to look up to, from the likes of Garry, John Roche, Martin Brady, Dave Scott, Kieran Carr, Geoff Gough, Jean Brown, Wendy Dodds and many others, but I admire any of our current senior and junior members looking to push and better themselves.

In terms of why did I join the club? For me it was due to a family member running for the club, as well as another family member (my sister) previously running for the club, it meant it was the only club I’d heard of at the time! I think we all just fall into the clubs we are at, but the important part for me is why do we stay at the club. Personally, I am at Clayton-le-Moors due to our history of being a club that predominantly focuses on fell running competitions. Many of our members have won some of the biggest Fell and Mountain races in the country, but this hasn’t happened in some time. I would like to help put Clayton’s name back up there in the results and help Clayton compete regularly at the top end of these races again.

Inter Counties Fell Championships Moel Eilio 2016

Inter Counties Fell Championships Moel Eilio 2016

The right gear is essential; what is your choice of gear for the big race?

The right gear is very important. Wearing something that even slightly irritates you or feels wrong whilst racing can massively affect your result… I can think of manly occasions where I’ve worn the wrong shoes (or even the wrong shorts!) and felt it’s added minutes to my time at the end of the race. However, we are all different and one man’s holy grail pair of shoes are another man’s idea of hell.

Here’s my kit:
1× Salomon S-Labs 6 (for me they are the best all-rounders at taking on all conditions)
1× shortest of short shorts (let those thighs free!)
1× buff cut in half for head (keep my mane out my eyes and protect my ears from wind damage and tinnitus)
1× buff (when cold to protect wind pipe)
1× pair of long socks (I damaged my shin a few years ago and gave myself shin tendonitis and can no longer run without)
1x ladies small fit Clayton vest (I like it snug and close fit to avoid wind blowing it about)
1× Karrimor bum bag (they’re cheap and have a good fit – if I break them shoving too much in I can easily pick up another)
1× Mountain Fuel gel (for long distances, not available yet but are a brilliant product – look out for it soon!)
1x Mountain Fuel soft flask filled with Mountain Fuel Blackberry flavour (for long distances, easy to carry and can keep supping all the way round – easy to shove back in bum bag after)
1× OMM jacket. (Haven’t been able to try all brands as they can be quite expensive. This jacket is a great fit and works well.)
1× small ladies cheapest of cheap water proof pants. (It’s rare you’ll need to wear them, so as long as you can fit them on in case of emergencies, make sure you have a pair that fold away small so that they don’t take up too much space.)

What is your favourite discipline and distance and why?

My favourite distance is around 10-15 miles over undulating runnable trails between 1000-2000 ft of climb. This is due to what I have on my doorstep running around the likes of Boulsworth, Widdop and Hurstwood. I am now more interested in becoming adept at more technical longer distance mountain running, so I have to leave the comforts of gorple road and try push myself on harsher, steeper fells.

Hopefully if asked the same question is a year or so, I’ll be answering 20+ miles of nasty technical mountain running!

Do you have any regrets so far?

I often think ‘should I have tried getting into running sooner?’. If I had though, I don’t think I’d have achieved all that I did before I began running. I started at 22, I’m now at 26. I’ve had to work very hard to get where I am but I have plenty years left to achieve more yet too.

The one thing I do regret is not looking after myself properly. Battering myself everyday has led to many niggles over the years. Not wanting to see any decline in my progress, I often trained through these injuries, often making them worse and now I live with many long lasting issues.

The worst came last year when I first injured my hamstring. Firstly I gave myself hamstring tendonitis, which moved up into my hamstring, which then moved up into my glute/hip and injured my piriformis. This all happened whilst training for a marathon and the three peaks. Afterwards, it all calmed down, only to get redamaged two months later at the start if August. I carried on racing and training, but kept getting intense pain on certain terrains on my lower back/hip area.

One day after a speed session, I got up from my chair after sitting down for a couple of hours at work and I couldn’t walk or stand up straight. Nothing particularly went, my body just packed in and I had severe sciatic pain constantly. It turned out I had damaged my SI joint, which is the bit between your hip and spine. This is the joint that takes all your impact when running, so when this goes the impact now goes through your glute, piriformis, groin and hamstring. I had intense pain for months and had to take 3-4 months off racing whilst I healed.

I now live with chronic sciatic pain that I have to manage everyday through strengthening and conditioning it, as well as regularly self-massaging to relieve the pain and regular sessions with Garry.

I regret not putting in the time to strengthen my core and punishing my body each day without letting injuries heal up properly. It’s no excuse, but after running 15 miles in the dark and rain, the last thing you want to do is come home and do some stretches and strength moves for half an hour..

Nonetheless, it’s very important and should be apart of your training!

Do you have any advice or training tips for new runners or other members of the club?

For new members, don’t worry about PBs, speed work, hill climbs or anything like that. Just get out and enjoy your running for 20-30 miles a week. Learn what terrains you like running on, what times of day you like to run, what distances you like/don’t like and build yourself a solid base of fitness. After 6 months to a year, once the habit of running regularly has become your natural state, and then start to think about how you can begin to improve yourself. This way, your body will be conditioned to run regularly and can the manage increases of demand in your training.

For current members my advice is this. No one is naturally talented at running. Yes, some of us start at better levels of fitness. Some of us are just naturally better at hill climbs/descending on technical climbs – but when it comes to plain running, talent is not the reason someone can run a 16-17 minute 5k. It’s because they have put in the time and effort to be that fit and quick. If you’re in a 10k and someone wins it in 31.00 minutes, or 35.00 for ladies, just know that if they can do it, so can you. You just need to put in the right training and the same level of dedication as the winner of that race. Over time, you’ll be exactly where you never thought you could be. It’ll hurt the same, but you’ll be quicker!

How do you like to train?

During the week I try to train straight after work, especially in winter! Rather than come home and potentially talk myself out of going for a run, I’ll do it before I even get back in the comforts of my warm home.

I often train alone, but hopefully in the coming months I’ll be training with a few more of my Clayton teammates now that I’m able to change up my training a little with the summer of international racing coming to an end.

What do you do to relax / how do you spend your downtime?

Not a right lot! By the time I’ve worked, ran, come home and eaten, it’s usually around 8.30pm so there’s not a lot of time left to do anything. I’ll have to tidy the house, do the washing, prepare tomorrow’s dinner and by the time that’s done it’s time to go to bed! At the weekends I’ll have a few (many) beers if I’ve raced on the Saturday, ready to run hungover on the Sunday.

Outside of running, who is Chris Holdsworth?

In my day job I am a Graphic Designer for a Horticulture company based in Trawden. Before this I studied Fine Art at Leeds College of Art and gained a first class degree. I had a particular interest in sculpture – even winning a national award and prize money for one! Sadly I can only seem to focus on one thing at once – so art is out, running is in…

Harrier over Pendle 51kbTell us an interesting fact about yourself?

I designed the most recent incarnation of the Clayton-le-Moors Harriers badge and also designed the pattern on the orange buffs for the FRA Relays held at Pendle two years ago. For the newer members who possibly won’t remember, I was also the Weekly Round Up writer before Adrienne!

What are your lifetime PB’s?

Current PBs are:
5K: 16:24
10k: 32:31
10 Mile: N/A
Half Marathon: N/A
Marathon: 2:37:11

I haven’t raced a 5k since 2014 and a 10k since early 2016 as I have been focussing on fell and trails, but I will have to give a few road races ago to see how I fare!

Any comments / final thoughts?

The biggest tip I can give is to stay humble, don’t get an ego and let your racing do the talking. You’ll only have egg on your face if it all doesn’t go to plan.

On a similar note, don’t reveal your goals (unless asked nicely in an interview by James Boult). Things can go wrong and plans can change. Keep your cards close to your chest and the pressure is lessened.

If you begin to say I WILL achieve this or that, or I WILL do this or that time, then you are putting unnecessary pressure on yourself trying to meet everyone’s expectations.

Lastly, reward yourself and reward yourself often.. Don’t overdo it with a slab of cake every three mile dog jog you do, but if you restrict yourself too much with diet and social events, then it’ll just get on top of you and will become unenjoyable. It’s just a hobby for us all at the end of the day, so work hard but buy regular Dominos pizzas to make up for it.

Finally, Hendon Brook course record?

Haha, I don’t know about that. Tom Cornthwaite has set a phenomenal record on that course, and many other top runners have come and had a go and fallen very short. It’s one of my favourite races and a course I do regularly in training, so every year I can race it I’ll be racing my hardest. That being said, I’m still the fastest man ever up Lenches (Strava official, nothing else counts) and I’ll take pride in that!

Seasons in the sun

We had joy we had fun… as many of the summer race series come to a close, it’s been another successful season for the club. Congratulations to Danny Collinge on his overall win at the Pendle and Burnley Grand Prix. Lots of age category wins to go with this. As the season comes to a close, it’s time to reflect and also time to look ahead to cross country and winter racing.

Club President, David Scott, with some reflections of 50 years of the 3 Peaks.

It’s been 3 months since 3 Peaks day and time to put some reflections on paper. It was the first time for 50 years that I hadn’t stood on the start line feeling nervous and apprehensive. However, it was really interesting to watch the race for a change, especially the section from the bottom of Pen-y-Gent to Ribblehead AND I actually saw the winner finish!  A first!!

When I first joined Clayton as a teenager, I looked in some awe at Alan Heaton, George Brass, Stan Bradshaw and Alistair Patten who had run the ‘Three Peaks’ and George had actually won it twice.  I thought when I was old enough (you had to be 21 then) that I’d like to have a go at the race.  I was away at college when I was 21 so had to wait until 1965 when I was 22.  What a baptism of fire that proved to be! No advice, no long training runs, no support, no food, no drink; it is little wonder that I lay down on Whernside for more than half an hour before I managed to continue to the top, with some nuts and raisins from the Mountain Rescue guys who had approached, asking if I had seen a body lying down nearby which they had been watching through their binoculars!  The following year I went on a Mountaineering Course in North Wales, little knowing what a huge influence the race would have on my life over the next 50 years, so it was 1967 before my next race; newly married to Jill (celebrated our Golden Wedding in April this year); and not surprisingly I knocked 58 mins off my time!!

The weather has varied from blizzards, hailstones, torrential rain, thick mist to blazing sun.  In 1978 in really bad weather, Ted Pepper died on Ingleborough getting lost in the mist and leaving the summit in the wrong direction.  This resulted in the tapes that now lie along the plateau to the checkpoint. In the bad weather I always used to run down the line of upcoming runners.  In 1981 the race was postponed as snow was up to the top of the dry stone walls and it was held in October.  In 1993 Carole Greenwood was swept off her feet just in front of me as we crossed the river at the foot of Whernside and was taken probably 30 yards or more downstream before she managed to reach the bank.  Then in 2001, Foot and Mouth caused the race to be cancelled altogether.

Over the years 4 Clayton men have won the race; George Brass 1955, 58; Peter Dugdale 1957; Dennis Hopkinson 1963 and David Walker 2003.  Two other men who had been in Clayton, won when representing Blackburn and then came back to Clayton, were John Calvert 1976, 77, and Harry Walker 1978, 79 and 81.  Four ladies have also won the race; the phenomenal Vanessa Peacock 1985, 87, 88, and 89, Ruth Pickvance 1990, Jean Rawlinson 1995 and Beverley Whitfield 2003.

Because of the weather, the underfoot conditions, changes to the course, new paths, boards and paving stones, it is difficult to compare times. There have been at least 7 course changes whilst I’ve been taking part. The route from Pen-y-Gent to Ribblehead is now defined, but originally there were numerous options (some better than others……..going for a recce was key!!!)  Men who have finished in under 3 hours are:   Andy Churchill 2hrs.50.02, Clifford Waddington 2hrs.56.02, Keith Windle 2hrs.59.14, David Scott 2hrs.59.48…and now after a gap of over 30 years, Chris Holdsworth  2hrs.54.49

We have won team prizes on many occasions but one of the best years was 1998 when we won the Mens, Ladies and Vets. There have also been lots of individual awards and record holders in the various age categories

Last winter was strange for me not doing over 20 training runs of 3 hours plus in preparation for the race. Increasing age made it necessary to do so much and although I missed the long runs on Pendle, looking back it was a relief not having the pressure of having to do them and it was lovely to be able to go on a lengthy holiday to South Africa! Finally I do have 1 Elite, 14 First Class certificates and 29 runs under 4 hours.

Hope this article may have been of some interest to our younger members and huge congratulations to Chris for a super run and all that it’s lead to.

David Scott.

And now onto this week’s action…

THE TONY ASPIN MEMORIAL COPPICE TRAIL RACE

This was the fifth and final race in the Club’s Summer Series. 23 club members turned out.  The race was won by Luke Turner. Claire Vincent was the first lady. As with all the summer series races, runners had to estimate their race time. Andrew Howarth  was the most accurate estimator being only 5 seconds out.

CITY OF PRESTON 10 MILE

A small group of strong runners gave the Grand Prix race a miss to head over to Preston and tackle the City of Preston 10 Mile race.

Report From Jon Cleaver

Setting off from the village hall in Walmer Bridge it was a 2 x 5 mile loop course on pretty flat terrain. Setting off with the front pack I went off a bit too hot and was clocking a good 5km pace at mile 2 – not a good strategy! Had to get things under control and slow down a touch to ensure a blow out didn’t happen. I ran under 30 minutes for my first five putting me within reach of my sub 60 goal but I started to fade a bit towards the end (unbeknownst to me the pack I was chasing was predominantly 5 mile runners!) Overall happy with 9th place and securing second place in the road championships. Good fast course which I would highly recommend for a 10 mile PB. In addition both men and women picked up best team prizes which was the cherry on the cake. Well done all that competed.

WHITTLE PIKE FELL RACE

Jon Cleaver and Peter Dugdale ran in the Whittle Pike Fell Race organised by Rossendale Harriers. This is a rough and tough midweek fell race covering 4.5 miles and 1400 feet of ascent. Jon Cleaver was 17th and Peter Dugdale was 82nd.

Report from Jon Cleaver

This was a  tough race for a midweek evening. I clocked 1500ft over 4.5 miles. Setting off in Cowpe, it was a fast start on the tarmac for the first few hundred yards onto the Fell for the first climb which seemed to go on forever. There was in total 3 major climbs (2 drags and one on hands) and some fantastic fun descents through mud up to your waist around the moorland above Leigh Quarry. Ended up covered head to toe and thoroughly enjoyed it. Pleased with 17/99 for a chicken legged road runner (name courtesy of Snell).

BORROWDALE FELL RACE

Five Clayton Harriers ran in the Borrowdale Fell Race. This is a classic, Lakeland AL fell race that takes runners 17 miles with 6500 feet of ascent, including a climb up Scafell. James Williamson was our first finisher in 79th place and with a time of 3:56:09. Andy Firth was running the race for an impressive 21st time.

Report from Andrew Firth

1988 was the first time I attempted Borrowdale and although I’d completed the 3 Peaks and Langdale a couple of times I wanted to sample a classic Lakeland Super Long. I had a reasonable run and got round in 4hrs 19 mins, but didn’t return until 1992 after discovering the delights of the evening “knees up” in the marquee. After that it became an almost annual pilgrimage – mainly due to the pull of the drinking and merrymaking in the marquee which normally ended with top fell runners in various stages of undress and climbing up the poles and sliding down the outside of the tent. (Some of them were Clayton members).

The marquee and evening festivities are no longer, but most years since 1992 has seen me camping or caravanning somewhere in the Lakes on the first weekend of August. Time seems to dull the pain of the Borrowdale, and lining up at the start of my 21st completion of the event saw me looking forward to the challenge rather than remembering the painful crawl up and descent of Dale Head on shredded legs. There were a few Claytoners lining up, James Williamson, Paul Shackleton, Mark Nutter, Ralph Baines and myself. The weather immediately before the start was terrible with heavy rain keeping the runners sheltering in their cars rather than warming up, however it eased up and shortly after the start the sun came out resulting in cags and thermal layers being discarded on the climb to Bessyboot.

I had my normal sprint start to avoid the bottleneck shortly after the start then eased back to my normal shuffle with a constant stream of runners passing me all the way up Bessyboot. I started to play catch up on the long haul through the boggy ground to Esk Hause and made good progress over the rocky Boulder fields to Scafell Pike summit. The scree descent to the corridor route was in excellent condition despite the rainfall, however two enforced stops to remove the resultant stones in shoes negated any advantage gained.

I felt OK on the run to Sty Head, but the minute I dibbed and started the Gable climb I started to remember last years pain and entertained thoughts of retiring and taking the easy descent to Seatoller. It took a great deal of fortitude to find the resolve to carry on, but with it being my 21st, and not ever failing in a Borrowdale previously I found the motivation to complete, promising myself this would be my last Super Long.

The traverse to Honister went well, finding some good lines and reasonable running (for me) and gaining a few places. However the climb up Dale Head was excruciating losing all the places gained, I arrived at the top a broken man and it was all I could do to shuffle down the steep rocky descent, taking care not to trip. The final run up the lane was a slow walk/run crossing the line in 5hrs 11 mins, but it was over. I remain very proud of my record on this tough Lakeland classic with a best time of 3hrs 54mins in 2000, but I think these super longs are taking too much out of my body so that’s it for me! I’m certainly not retiring from running, and I’ll be giving Langdale a shot in October – it’s shorter by at least an hour. I’ll be back at Borrowdale next year, but cheering runners on at key spots like Esk Hause and Sty Head, and I hope to see more Clayton runners entered to this classic.

Report From James Williamson

Borrowdale is an absolute classic Lakeland AL race, 16.7 miles and 7000ft ascent over some of the roughest & most technical terrain the Lake District has to offer.

The route took us from Rosthwaite village and summits including Bessyboot, Scafell Pike, Great Gable & Dale Head before returning back to the village. I settled nicely in to the race and climbed well ensuring I ate & drank regular to prevent a recurrence of last year when I bonked on Great Gable. The conditions underfoot were far from ideal due to heavy rainfall in the lead up to the race, the ground was wet & boggy and the rocks over the corridor route between Scafell Pike & Great Gable were testing and incredibly slippery as a result I found my descending was poor at times and I became a touch frustrated.

I was glad to reach the Honister Hause check point for a much needed swig of orange which helped me kick on up the final, relentless climb to Dale Head. The long run off through the quarry back to Rosthwaite felt never ending but I finally dibbed in to finish in 3.56.5  – mixed feelings about my performance – disappointed as I descended badly & I know I can go quicker in better conditions but also pleasing as I knocked 14 minutes off my time from the 2016 English champs race.

The crowning glory of this race is undoubtedly the cheese & Jam sandwiches served up in the village hall at the end of the race – pure magic

HELLIFIELD GALA

Having missed Whittle Pike fell race due to work commitments I was keen to squeeze a race in this week and Hellifield Gala ticked all the boxes. With plenty of stalls and attractions for the family this tough little 5.6km race should take me sub 40 minutes to blast round before the boy (James ,4) got too bored! The record is an astonishing 23 minutes, set by a certain Mr A. Brownlee, apparently quite well known round Yorkshire way! With the weather promising to be kind off we went.

As BS races go this is as runnable and fast as you would expect, broadly up and down three small hills (climbing ladders over dry stone walls and hay bales over barbed wire fences as you go) round a marshal and trig point at the top of the last hill then run back the way you came, starting and finishing in the centre of the gala field with a commentary from t’Yorkshire MC and much applause from the spectators.

Three Clayton made the start line, Steve Fish having completed the race before and myself and Martin Brady taking mental notes as to the route, the three of us raced each other well, changing positions a few times as we went, but ultimately finishing Brady, Woolford, Fish.  One for the diary next year!

FARLETON KNOTT FELL RACE

Farleton Knott is a challenging 4.5 mile race with around 1500 feet of climb and is a counter in the BOFRA Championship.

Two senior runners took part, Andrew Holt and Richard Briscoe, and Briony Holt ran in the U17 race in which she was 1st girl.

Report from Andrew Holt

Fifth BOFRA race of the season for me today at Farlton knott (big hill on the left as you pass the m6 on the settle to Kendal road). Unusually for a BOFRA race it’s not a straight up/down but more of a gradual up, stupid down, even more stupid up and gradual back down to the finish.

Weather was cloudy, warm, breezy, bit greasy underfoot but good running conditions.
Having walked the route first with Briony I knew it was going to be tough, but have done well this season with uphills of this type and true to form overtook several people on the way up to the trig.

The scree run down I can only describe as hilarious, my usual tip tapping down quickly deteriorated into a sort of waterskiing affair on stones, bringing out laughter from the runners around me!More by luck than judgment I survived and crawled, hands and feet back up to the trig for the run along the top. I was slower than I would have liked on the descent to the finish, and I was overtaken several times. The heavy rain shower was a welcome addition however.

4.5 miles,750ft of elevation, top twenty finish and a huge smile on my face at the end of it; another quality fell race and the longest one I’ve managed yet so no complaints.

Two other hoops were visible, Briony and Richard Briscoe.

U17 RACE

Briony Holt was our sole junior runner and she raced in the U17 category finishing in 11th place overall and 1st girl.

Report from Briony Holt

After walking the course with my dad, I knew the race would be very much suited to my style of running; long single track paths with rocky descents and gradual inclines on top. There were hardly any bogs, despite the weeks worth of rain, which is always a bonus.

The time quickly passed and soon it was time for my race to start. Surprisingly I wasn’t my usual ‘nervous wreck’ (maybe it was the patterned shorts?) so my warm up went pretty smoothly and I was ready to race.

I set off in first but quickly got caught up on the gradual uphill. However, due to knowing where the best parts to overtake on the course were, I managed to take the lead again around half way through and keep it until the end. Well done to Richard Briscoe and my dad as well who ran the senior course.

WORLD MOUNTAIN RUNNING LONG DISTANCE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Congratulations to our runner, Christopher Holdsworth, who took part in the 2017 World Mountain Running Long Distance Championships in Italy. He put in an impressive performance for his debut in Team GB to finish in 36th place overall and 3rd British male in 03:47:30 in a field of 443 international runners. Well done Chris you’ve done us proud!

Report from Chris Holdsworth

Chris Holdsworth

Chris Holdsworth ready to represent Team GB at the World Mountain Running Long Distance Championship

Well what can I say? The course literally beat me up, battered me, chewed me up and spat me out – the hardest, most physical race I have ever endured… But what an atmosphere! It was supported fantastically and had Tour de France level of support going up some hills. Amazing.

As for the race itself, do I think I could have placed higher? Absolutely. Had it been on a course more suited to my style of running I think I could have been well up there. However, this was without a doubt the most technical, brutal and toughest route I’ve ever endured. Every step down a descent felt like a punch to your body, which by the end had me falling constantly on the wet rocks, bloodied, battered and in a world of pain for the last few miles, but very proud to finish 3rd GB runner and 34th in the World Long Distance Mountain Running Championships.

So… On my first GB outing I managed to run a respectable time on one of the toughest races out there, running over 19 miles and 8000ft of harsh Italian Alps. I am happy with that – but mostly I’m really proud of simply being here and the level of support so many have given me, and I’m really thankful for that. I hope I can keep it up for a good while yet and return on the amazing amount of support shown in me so far. This is just the beginning and I hope you will continue to follow my progress as it really does spur me on.

Lastly, I’d like to thank my amazing friends Adam Hamer and Caroline Lane and girlfriend Sophie McIntosh for travelling over to watch me race. I can’t thank them enough, especially Sophie who has put up with so much moaning and complaints from me over the years, she’s practically my complaints department at this point!

Thanks again for all the support, I’m now going to enjoy several beers over the next week and immense as I travel back through Europe and no doubt an immense amount of DOMS…

Run it fast, run it long, run it any which way!

This week you’ve recorded times from 4 mins 45 seconds to 33 hours 56 minutes and lots more in between with some short and snappy runs, some really loong ones and some pretty soggy ones too. And there’s been racing action abroad too with more Ironman competition. In other words, the usual spectacular celebration of running (and swimming and cycling) exploits from the Clayton membership. Fantastic stuff.

Wednesday

Padiham Greenway

Organising his first senior race, Junior Coach Jason Pier did a super job with this popular fixture on the Burnley and Pendle Grand Prix series, which ran like clockwork and attracted a record 180 seniors to race on a warm, balmy mid week night.

Fast Wharfedale Senior James Hall blazed into the finish in under 16 minutes with 15:44, followed by our own Danny Collinge in 16:29. From then on, the flood of Clayton runners was pretty constant, with many PBs and course bests peppering the results.

Junior races

There was also a record turnout of 83 juniors for these races, a large section of whom were Clayton Juniors. There were age group wins for Freya Birtwistle (U9G), Helena White (U13G), Tom Holden (U17B) and Millie Stubbs (U17G). Podium places were also occupied by Robbie Smedley (U13B), Finley Stubbs (U13B), Michael Stevens (U15B), Adam Stephenson (U15B), Ella Dorrington (U15G), Jay Bowman (U17B), Kaliska Clarke (U17G) and Alfie White (U17B). All our Juniors ran brilliantly and were smiling at one point or another during the proceedings.

Lee Mill Fell Race

This midweek Rossendale Harriers fixture over 6 miles takes competitors on an industrial fell-tour of some of Rossendale’s largest stoneworking sites, past and present, with some good old fashioned moorland running thrown in too. Won by Phil Marsden from Horwich RMI, Chris Snell was the first Clayton runner home in 7th, with Alan Life in 11th and Stephen Fish in 47th.

Heart of the Lakes Rydal Round

Along with the Guides races, the Rydal Round makes up the fell running attractions at Ambleside Sports. This longstanding AM race is held over 9 miles and 300ft of climb. Matt Perry was 12th in a fast time of 1:31:33 behind winner Simon Bailey (Mercia) in 1:23:37, Richard Briscoe was 63nd in 1:57:30 and Alan Dorrington 72nd in 2:03:32. 144 runners started.

Alan Dorrington reports:

“Chasing Briscoes in the mist… that was the theme for this Fairfield Horseshoe by another name. Following pretty much the same course, save for the initial climb up Nab Scar and a little bit of contouring around rather than over intermediate peaks, the weather during the round deteriorated reasonably decisively as a heavy rain shower and strong winds blew in over Fairfield summit. Depending on where you were in the field, this meant being buffeted and drenched at some point, some escaping the worst and others like myself being battered by the weather over the rougher rocky sections over Fairfield and down to Link Hause.

It had started innocuously enough, as I found myself pacing the long initial climb up to Heron Pike, only for Richard Briscoe to stride past at the bottom of the climb. Assuming he had been out clubbing till 4am the night before/raced for 3 days previously/was severly dehydrated* (*delete as applicable), I happily let him go and marvelled instead at the sight of Simon Bailey running the top section of the climb, some considerable way above me. I resolved to catch Richard later in the race for sure.

Except I didn’t, and he remained, tantalisingly, a short distance in front all the way over toward Fairfield and as the mist came in. The rain and wind and clag did for the vision through my glasses and reduced my pace to an embarassingly slow crawl over the rocky sections to Hart Crag till lower ground was gained, it stopped blowing a hooly and I could see again. Except there was no sign of Richard. He’d had a good run over the back side of the course and finished well on the now sodden descent back through Brock Crags and along to the sports field. Next time…

Ambleside Sports Guides Races – BOFRA

Along with Grasmere, this is one of the oldest and more prestigious Guides Races in the country, following the usual ‘stupid steep up and then down’ format of Guides Races over the years.

Briony Holt revels in this kind of flat out racing up and down 45 degree slopes and took 2nd place in the U17G race by a clear margin behind perpetual rival, Rosie Woodhams. Her time over the same course as the Senior race would have placed her as 2nd Lady in that race too…

In the Senior race won by Rob Hope in 14:15, a plucky Richard Briscoe decided to see just how wrecked his legs might be from the Rydal Round a couple of hours before but still managed a respectable 21:39 and 59th with Andrew Firth in 72nd. Chapeau!

Here’s Richard’s report:

“On Thursday I decided to do the Rydal Round and the short Bofra race at Ambleside Sports. I had to to the Bofra race to try and get 8 championship races in. The main race is the Rydal round a cracking race was a good turn out. Three Clayton runners did the long race Matt Perry, Alan Dorrington, and myself. I started very well behind Matt but in front of Alan. I saw him behind me so I had to improve my game to stop him. The weather wasn’t good especially on top of Fairfield so had to be quick to get round. I managed the race and was faster than previous times. I felt good so I did the 2nd race as well the short Bofra race. Andy Firth and myself did it.”

Lakeland 100

Grim, overwhelming, stomach churning and unforgettable. That was just the portable toilets at this years Lakeland 100/50 event, never mind the tough, iconic ultra distance courses and traditional Lakeland ‘weather’ on offer to hardy ultra runners this weekend.

Put simply, Martin Terry had a knockout performance in the Lakeland 100. He ran consistently well throughout the race and was looking happy and strong at Dalemain checkpoint. He continued to race steadily and, despite a temporary period of tiredness in the later stages, managed to pick off a few runners to finish in 17th place overall with a time of 26:09:03. There are no age categories in the race but that position would have been 1st V50.

Andrew Armstrong finished in 113th place with a time of 33:56:30 despite suffering from sickness and struggling to refuel throughout, opting for a liquid diet of flat Coke and a single cup of soup between miles 25 and 75. Andy does like to keep things simple and minimal, but we’re not sure that nutrition strategy will fully catch on in the ultra world. Nor will the acquisition of trench foot due to the wet conditions that battered the 223 finishers in the 100 race for much of the weekend.

Congratulations to both on a truly mammoth accomplishment. Trench foot pictures withheld due to upsetting content.

Also a special mention to Clayton Juniors Natasha and Bronia Olszewska who worked really hard all weekend at the Dalemain checkpoint, looking after the 100 mile runners brilliantly.

This English Hill Runners fixture takes in a 5.25 mile loop from Sabden over the quieter end of Pendle with some nice contouring running amongst a couple of stiff climbs giving around 1500ft of climbing. Dave Motley got his race face on as well as the bit between his teeth, and took a fine second place behind winner Grant Cunliffe of Rossendale Harriers with support from Chris Snell in 8th, Rick Moore in 31st and Peter Dugdale in 44th.

Ironman Switzerland

After Jon Cleaver’s recent efforts at Ironman UK, Vicky Heys has earned the right now to a very specific tattoo with a successful completion of Ironman Switzerland. Or Schweize/Suisse/Svizzera/Svizra depending on your language preference. Despite the multiple language options in Switzerland, the Ironman format remains the same: a 2.4-mile (3.86 km) swim, a 112-mile (180.25 km) bicycle ride and a marathon 26.2-mile (42.16 km) run. A long way in other words…

Angela Shian sent us this report as presumably Vicky is putting her feet up somewhere and refuelling with cheese and chocolate:

“Vicky Heys is an Ironman!!!

Vicky is mostly known for racing the fells, being noisy at cross country….!! And has ran the odd road relay for us (with a little persuasion!). However this year her Inov8s have had to take a back seat. Vicky has always competed very well in local triathlons, but it seems that this is not enough of a challenge for her! Vicky and Julia Hartley booked to take part in the Switzerland Ironman, 2.4mile open water swim, 112 bike, then finish off with a full marathon, all this in hot and humid conditions. The hard training of 2017 paid off, she ran over the finishing line in 13hrs 40, in 17th position in her age category. Congratulations on the mammoth achievement, Vicky can now have a well earned rest, well until Yorkshireman marathon next month anyway….!!!”

Congratulations from all of us too!

Thunderbolts and Lightning

…very, very frightening race! Well it was on Wednesday evening for some of our hardy fellrunners. Other than a bit of thunderbolt dodging, you have been uphill and downhill, out in force at the Towneley 10K and junior races as well as the Todmorden Park 5K and the Widdop Races.

TUESDAY 18 JULY

WORSTON UPHILL & DOWNHILL RACES

Two races on one evening for club members with the first being the uphill race from Worston village to Pendle Summit and the second the downhill race from the summit back down the village. Like all the summer series races, runners must estimate their time.

Carl Helliwell was the first to reach the finish in the uphill and Mark Nutter was the best estimate being only 8 seconds out on his guess

Uphill Results

Andy Armstrong was the fastest descender in the downhill race and Sean Clare was the best estimate being a mere 7 seconds out on his guess.

BLISCO DASH

Three hardy fell runners headed to the Lake District for the Blisco Dash which is a low key, rough and tough short race with a bit of everything. It’s a 5 mile course with 2133ft of ascent.  A troubling weather forecast was issued and here’s what the race organisers had to say;

This was a race organiser’s worst nightmare! After three days of blazing sun, a forecast showing isolated thundery showers. The electric storm begins an hour and a half before the race, and is both heavy and very local. We wait and I take no money until we see how it pans out. The summit marshals are prepared to set off and our Plan B is for them to turn the runners before the summit. We are on the start line when the lightning comes again and two runners drop out when I spell out the danger. Both of my children are running. The race sets off and it stops raining in time for Phil and John to take the results. As Phil Davies says afterwards,”this is how fell running ought to be – on the edge”

Exciting stuff.

WIDDOP

Report from Peter Coates

There were some few Clayton Harriers at Wednesday evening’s fell race at Widdop. This was my first time doing this fantastic mid-week race organised by Calder Valley Fell Runners. This is a 7-mile race taking in the moorland around Widdop. No really big climbs but a great route on twisty paths and plenty of tussocks and bracken.  I took a tumble on some wet rocks half way round but managed to get round and finished a respectable 8th place out of 144 finishers. Clayton were third men’s team overall.  This is a great race, and certainly one of my favourite local mid-week fell races and will definitely do again next year all being well.

Report from Ella Dorrington

On Wednesday I ran the Widdop Junior fell race. It was a really good course, one which suited me quite well. There wasn’t too much steep climbing, most of the climbs being long and draggy. Luckily, there were only three girls in my age group so I was guaranteed to be in the top three!

I had a good start and ran all the climbs but on the way down, I got quite annoyed because I kept on tripping and falling over loads. One was a spectacular fall, I face planted and have a few battle scars – some cuts on my face, legs and a swollen knee! The weather was all right, a perfect temperature and a little bit rainy. The atmosphere was really good and it was great to see all the Clayton Juniors that ran.

TOWNELEY PARK 10K

55 Clayton Harriers ran in the Towneley Park 10K the 11th race of the popular Pendle and Burnley Grand Prix race series. Danny Collinge took the win with Barlick’s Julian Hood snapping at his heels.

Jon Cleaver and Luke Turner continue their great form to finish in the top ten. Curtis Holt was 1stMj in 40th place overall. Kevin Davis was our first vet male finisher in 22nd place and was 1st V55. Cassandra Smedley was our first lady finisher in 72nd overall. Irene Roche was 1st F55.

Report from Cassandra Smedley

I nearly missed the start of this race as I was too busy watching the juniors and chilling. Standing on the start line I was feeling rather relaxed. As we set off round Towneley I got into my stride and felt good.

As I got to Mount Lane, I was feeling strong but I was very pleased to see the top. A few friendly faces definitely helped! As I started down the hill into Towneley I was still feeling strong, so pushed on past a few more runners. The support all way round was brilliant. Great PB 10k for me, as well as taking 6 mins off last year’s time.

Hills, hills and more hills!

With a few notable exceptions who went looong, you’ve been hitting the hills this week. Welsh hills, Lakeland hills and our very own local hills. Those gruesome hill rep sessions seem to have been paying off as there have been outstanding individual performances, some great team camaraderie and a lot of miles covered by you all. Belt up for a roller coaster ride this week!

Sedbergh Sports fell race

Short and steep, this AS race packs in 1300ft of climb in its short 3.5m length. Won by Josh Boyle MU23 in 25:37, Wendy Dodds FV60 was 31st in 38:49 and Stephen Fish MV60 36th in 43:00. Stephen sent this report in:

“Always keen to try a race I’ve not previously done I headed up the M6 for the Friday evening event held just outside Sedbergh, in a field next to Buckbank Lane, just off the A683.

Sedbergh Sports is a typical Cumbrian local show with plenty of novelty events for children and adults, comprising of 3 legged, sack, potato, tyre rolling, sprint, ½ mile handicap, 1 mile handicap races, plus the fell races for U7s upwards.

The senior route took us out, after a lap of the show field, along Buckbank Lane before the steep ascent of Knott. On the initial part of the climb I managed to eventually pass Wendy Dodds and was amazed to look up and see the eventual race winner, Josh Boyle, actually running the climb. Wendy and I were in walking mode at this point and it wasn’t long before she came past me again and it stayed that way for the remainder of the race. Once Knott was conquered the ascent up onto Sickers Fell ensued, followed by a fast, exhilarating, descent into the show field. Despite having what I thought was a decent run, I only finished 36 out of 38 runners.

A very good ‘BOFRA’ style race, which had a bit of everything. One I would recommend, certainly justifying its category ‘A’ status, despite the tarmac portion at the beginning.”

Snowdon Race

The big fixture of the weekend was the Snowdon Race. Held since 1976, its 10 miles up and down format on Wales’ highest mountain has led to its classic status on the mountain running calendar. Incidentally the male record for this race has stood since 1985, being one of Kenny Stuart’s enduring times from that golden era of fell/mountain running – an amazing 1:02:29.

A large contingent of Clayton runners made their way to the top bit of Snowdonia for the start in Llanberis. Quickest up and down in somewhat claggy conditions, and with the added cachet of wearing an England vest for the second time was Chris Holdsworth. He came a stunning 4th place in 1:09:17, 1 second off 3rd place and 3rd English counter behind the Italian winner Magnini in 1:06:42.

Behind a cast of, well maybe not thousands but 10s of Clayton vests supported him with special mention going to Richard Stevenson who managed to rip the skin off not one but both heels during the descent. Ouch.

Pendle Running Festival half marathon and 10k

A few hardy (foolhardy?) souls decided they hadn’t had enough of hilly half marathons the week after Hendon Brook and so opted to run the half distance at the Pendle Running Festival, an event growing in popularity owing to its relaxed atmosphere, additional family activities and scenic location in Barley.

With over 2000ft of climb in the half, and over 800ft in the 10k the routes were accurately described as challenging.Tom Brewster SEN was first Clayton runner home in the 10k in 3rd place and 40:05 whilst James Boult MU23 led the way in the Half in 1:39:18.

A trio of Clayton runners still nursing Hendon Brook legs formed a pact before the half marathon to sing, cajole and support each other round the hilly course.

Here’s their tripartite perspective ‘The Team Works!’:

Report by Cassie Smedley

“Well, to say that I was nervous entering another HM 6 days after completing the tough Hendon Brook HM was an understatement, but to be told that the Pendle HM was as tough wasn’t making me feel any better. We were set off with the 10k race, and needed to make sure we didn’t get carried away and set off too fast. It was great to run with Michelle but we also had Mick Hughes for support and encouragement, and the odd sing song from him to keep us entertained. We had a great run, kept each other going at a good pace, and Mick went to stretch his legs out with about 3k to go. Me and Michelle found our legs again and kicked into the finish. Came in strong to the finish line, hand in hand as always. Great run, with great team mates and friends”

Report by Michelle Abbott

“Well after having a bit of a rollercoaster week and doing Hendon brook just 6 day before it was time for the the Barley hm, first time for me. I wasn’t out for any records, just an enjoyable run which it was, kept a good continuous pace. I enjoyed every bit with Cassie and Mick running along side, it was brill. As we were coming back into Barley after first lap the 10 k runners were heading into the finish and we had to go and tackle another big hill before doing another lap. It was tempting to join the 10 k runners at that point but we still managed to keep plodding with a smile and finished strong before heading straight to the cafe for a well earned bacon butt.”

Report by Mick Hughes

“Having done the 10k last year, I had vowed to take on the Pendle Festival half marathon this year. What I had forgotten was that it would come just 6 days after Hendon Brook! My largest goal this year is completing the whole 14 PBGP races so having managed 1hr 57 at Hendon, I had to be smart in tackling this and one of my smartest decisions was to pace along with Cassie & Michelle. Taking on another 2000ft of climb and the 2nd hilly half marathon within a week would take discipline. The one thing Cassie & Michelle have in abundance is determination and stamina! These girls have real good engines and we took turns at pushing forward and leading the group. Add into the mix good personality and sense of humour and we were good to go. Having done the 10k last year I advised the ladies to remain steady in pace as tackling Stang Top twice is a test!. We chatted and willed each other on throughout all the elevation and many laughs kept us going as we paced just right to manage a nice sub 2 hr finish and another good day for team Clayton. It was another one of those races that stay in the memory and a reminder of just how great our team mates are.”

Race to the Stones

The Ridgeway is old. Really old, and steeped in Iron Age features and subsequent history along its 100 mile-odd route through the Chilterns to the North Wessex Downs. It makes for great open trail running too as the Clayton team of Chris Funnell, Stephen Ainsworth, Rob Morrison, Andy Webster, and Colin White found out when they entered the 100km Race to the Stones, the stones in question being the iconic stone circle at Avebury.

Here’s what happened:

Back in late 2016 during one of our Sunday morning long run and natters we decided to try something different and Stephen suggested we gave Race to the Stones a go in 2017. The appeal was that this would be a good challenging distance (100K ultra over 2 days) and was the equivalent of trail running glamping as everything was included.

The run itself is along The Ridgeway which is an ancient 5000 year old trail from the Chilterns to the North Wessex Downs. This is trail running at its most scenic with miles of rolling hills and spectacular views. The forecast for the first day was cloudy but dry with temperatures around 22 degrees. The reality was cool with regular showers which kept the running to a comfortable temperature. There were refuelling stations every 10-12K with every type of sports nutrition you’ve heard of and quite a few I’d never come across. We quickly realised that our loaded backpacks which carried enough provisions for a weeks wild camping were totally superfluous as we took refuelling to a whole new level and Andy commented that he’d eaten less on all inclusive holidays.

Our plan was to run the route together as Team Clayton and soak up the whole experience. The end time wasn’t important. We all expected to comfortably complete the first 50K but the big question mark was how we were going to feel trying to get going again the next morning. We arrived mid afternoon at the half way camp where virtually every whim was catered for including unlimited hot food, bar, hot showers, massage, medic tents, pamper tent, sports nutrition, yoga class, live music, stretch out area and rollers and chill out zone complete with bean bags. In true Northern style we made full use of all the facilities. The overnight stay was in one man tents and runners and walkers arrivals continued to be announced over the speakers late into the evening. Between the wind rattling the tents and Rob shouting in his sleep we didn’t get much shut eye (apart from Rob) and at 0500am we all popped out of the tents bleary eyed and wondering how the legs were going to hold up.

A hot shower, porridge and full English later we all felt refreshed and good to go again and we set off just after 0600am although this was considered a late start and a big contingent had already left earlier. With the second day promising to be a bit warmer we all donned our Clayton vests. The scenery the second day was even more spectacular than the first and the early morning was calm and cool and it felt great to get the legs moving again. The route contained roughly 6000 feet of climbing and we were getting lots of shouts of “good effort” as we overtook lines of people without breaking pace as although the climbs were long and these weren’t hills by Northern standards. At the refuelling points everyone remarked on how we had stuck together and ran the challenge as a team. Mostly it was just pairs or individuals. Although most didn’t know where Clayton le Moors was many made comments about its infamous running history including Ron Hill and other Clayton le Moors legends.

After we had been running for a couple of hours Colin started grimacing as an old hip injury resurfaced and the next 20K proved to be the biggest test for Team Clayton as we battled through each 1K using a combination of encouragement, painkillers and shear determination. Andy’s stock phrase of “it’s just around the next bend” was no longer having effect and we were trying to decide if we had enough provisions in our backpacks to knock up a quick field stretcher. After force feeding Colin a handful of Randoms and lying that it was only 5K ( or one Parkrun) to go we dug deep for the final push and the glory that awaited at the finish which was at the Bronze Age stone henge at Avebury. At the finish line we had mixed feelings of pride of starting and completing as a team but sorry that it had come to an end. Although it was never about a fast time ( as we stayed much longer than most at the refuelling stops), Steve came away with the Vet 60 1st place which was the icing on the cake. Over a few beers we celebrated and relived our whole experience and talk was already about ideas for the next trip.

Junior FRA ‘do’

Four Clayton Juniors (Briony Holt, Ella Dorrington, Jenson Bentham and Christopher Brown) attended the Junior FRA ‘do’ at Marl Pits Rossendale. Part social, part prizegiving, the event was hosted as in previous years by Rossendale Harriers and combined running and coaching sessions, planning for the future and a talk from fell legend Steve Birkinshaw.

Briony was there to pick up her 3rd place award, presented by Steve Birkinshaw, for the season long English Championships U17G competition, a fantastic achievement in only her first year in that age group.

This edition was won by Joshua Jardine MU23 in 1:32:55. Andy Armstrong MV40 was first Clayton finisher in 100th in 2:04:24, Jack Holt MV60 105th in 2:04:56, Alan Dorrington MV40 214th in 2:23:53 and Wendy Dodds FV60 241st in 2:30:48.

Clayton Juniors coach Andy Armstrong reports:

“The Kentmere Horeshoe is a 12 mile/3000ft fell race in the old school tradition. It starts on a narrow country lane (ensuring a mad scramble for positions as the race heads up out of the village) and it finishes in a farmer’s field where water is available out of the back of a car. The presence of Pete Bland’s iconic red van, coupled with tea and sandwiches in the village hall afterwards complete the picture. No medals, no Tshirt, no Tannoy!

Between the start and finish is one of the prettiest horseshoe courses in the lakes with views beyond Windermere to the west and Haweswater to the east. A dry sunny day guaranteed fast times and comedy vest tans all round. Four Clayton members made the trip to Kentmere; first home was Andy Armstrong in 100th place chased all the way off the fell gate by Jack Holt in 105th (3rd MV60). Alan Dorrington was next in at 214th then Wendy Dodds some time later in 241st position (1st FV60).
The race is not without its dark side – Judith Taylor of Clayton lost her life on this course in 1994, during what were described as truly horrendous blizzard conditions. However on a clear day this would make a great introduction to anyone seeking to do longer fell races in the Lake District.

Ironman UK Bolton

Last but certainly not least given his efforts, Jon Cleaver has been quietly doing the lengths, kms and miles in preparing for the classic Ironman UK grueller, and joined fellow multiple kit option devotees at the start line in Pennington Flash on Sunday. Here’s how he got on – wonder if he’s going to get the tattoo now?

“Starting with an eye watering 03:45 wake up call I got myself changed and headed over to Penington Flash for the first event of the day 4km swim which involved 2 laps of the flash mainly trying to avoid getting kicked and elbowed in the head. I was pleased to come out at 01:18 which was exactly what I paced for in training. Next onto the bike going through Leigh over to Westhoughton, then Rivington for the start of two 50 mile loops and 5200ft of climbing I felt pretty good on the bike keeping on top of my feed and hydration. I came into T2 after 07:07 of cycling, considering this was probably my weakest event I was happy enough with the time. Then onto the run my strongest discipline having not done a marathon since April I was a bit rusty and my legs were shot at from the bike I had to summon all the strength I could muster on a pretty hilly road course over 1200ft in elevation. I finished the run in 03:45 which is not too shabby considering and heard the immortal words “Jonathan you are an Iron Man” at 12:32. Overall I placed 507 out of over 2000 making up a lot of ground on the run.”

Keep on runnin’

It’s been another weekend of epic action for Clayton-le-Moors Harriers. You’ve been out on the fells and mountains, the urban and rural roads, and parks. There’s been a huge turnout of Harriers at Hendon Brook race and you’ve been spotted at classic Lakeland races, mountain marathons and a whole host of 5K and 10K events.

TUESDAY 4 JULY

20 BARRIERS

The 20 Barriers race follows a scenic route of just over 5 miles on the field paths, trails and canal towpath in the countryside to the south of Carnforth “Gateway to the Lake District”. The race gets its name from the number of stiles and other field boundaries crossed en-route but none of the “20 barriers” should present any unusual hazards or difficulties.

Wendy Dodds was our only runner in this year’s race finishing in 83rd place and 1st WV65.

ROCHDALE 10K

Michael Hogan was running solo at the Rochdale 10K where he finished in 51st place with a time of 42:04

Report from Michael Hogan

I was the only Clayton runner to venture out on this lovely mid-week 10K. It was a bit warm and humid but otherwise good conditions; there isn’t too much flat on the course just a series of undulations to work at. A cracking night out for 8 quid and a pair of technical running socks for completing- can’t fault it.

STOODLEY PIKE FELL RACE

Five Clayton Harriers took to the Calderdale fells for the Stoodley Pike Fell Race which, of course, features a run up to and back from the famous landmark. It’s a 3.1m race with 699ft of ascent. Richard Stevenson was our first finisher in 19th place in 23:42.

Report from Colin Woolford

Another classic Calder Valley race, hosted by Tod Harriers with a short fast well marked course with something for everyone but none of it lasting long enough to be too unpleasant! I seemed to pass more people than passed me, so either my climbing is improving or I’m starting too near to the back…  I ended up in an early tussle for position with Steve Fish and was keen to stay ahead as I knew Mr Stevenson and Mr Briscoe would be well out of my reach!

By the time I reached the Pike – where there seemed to be a huge amount of spectators clapping and cheering support ( I apologised for being late) – I was hot on the heels of a Halifax Harrier and young Tod lady whereby the three of us seemed to change places several times over the final mile and although they got the better of me I was very pleased with my performance over all as third of five Clayton home.  This is a cracking route and a good race for those looking to venture on to the fells.

MANX MOUNTAIN MARATHON

Simon Halliday, Jean Brown and Paul Thompson took part in the tough, Manx Mountain Marathon. Simon Halliday finished in 6th place, Jean Brown was 7th and 1st lady, and Paul Thompson was 12th. 52 competitors finished the event.

Report from Jean Brown

So pleased that I made it over to the Isle of Man for what was billed as the last running of the Manx Mountain Marathon. Those of us who had a great time over there are very much hoping that the race continues – it is a classic in every way!

The 51km race with 2500m of ascent starts in Ramsey at the northern end of the island and tracks its way up and down what seems like every hill on the island to finish on the prom in Port Erin. The first half is over the wilder hills, the latter section on a stunning section of coast path.

Jean Brown at the Manx Marathon presentation.

A bottle of local beer and tee-shirt for all finishers – presentation by a bar next to the beach in the evening (after great ice-cream and fish and chips in the town) – what is not to like?! OK – it was sunny this year so the island was showing itself off in the best way!

The race was extremely well organised, a mini-bus available to take you to the start, great marshalling on route, lots of places to get water etc.

Thanks for an excellent race! I plan to return…

Report from Richard Briscoe

I hadn’t done this race for the last two years so I’d decided to do it. I hadn’t really done much long running recently so it would be a good training run. I started slow and steady and stayed with James Boult, and John Roche all the way round. I was quite worried how many people I was overtaking especially on the hills. I have an achilles heel injury and a bad calf so I struggled on the downhills.

The support was amazing from the water stations from both and Clayton and Trawden handing out sweets etc. I struggled on the last mile where I wanted to get under 1hr45 but James and John overtook me unfortunately. Finished the route in 1hr50 so it was a good result and a good day for everyone who took part.

Report from Sharon Wilson

Well it was the morning of Hendon Brook and I was feeling ok so far; had a good breakfast and drank plenty of water, so I knew I would be ok. Until I was about to leave the house – oh my the nerves started to kick in even more. What am I doing? My first ever half marathon and I choose Hendon Brook! Well I love a challenge and I knew I would give it my all so nothing ventured nothing gained.

As we arrived to the start line getting ready to start. I could tell I wasn’t on my own with nerves everyone was going through exactly the same. And at that split second we were starting the race its now or never I took it steady as I didn’t want to go too fast. My friend Carole Bailey ran with me as it was her first Hendon Brook too. We kept one another going and it was great as the first 3miles passed I was feeling ok and nerves drifted away.  I was focusing on I can do this. As we kept on running Marshalls were handing out jelly babies and water which was great. It was great to see so many spectators and marshals helping and making sure we were. It’s what makes a race.

As we reached 8 miles I was relieved to be nearly half way round feeling very hot but good as we approached another water station. I could see a young lad with a hosepipe. He knew we were hot and yes I can say I was wet through but  it cooled me down and it kept me going. As we were nearly approaching the end I was slowing down a bit which I didn’t want to. I kept saying to myself you can do this not much longer to go. As we were getting closer to the finish I could har everyone cheering us on. This really spurred me on to give me my last sprint finish which I did and it felt fantastic.

WE LOVE MANCHESTER 10K

Amanda Duffy and Clare Wilson ran in the We Love Manchester 10K

Report from Amanda Duffy

I ventured over to the Ethiad stadium on Sunday morning for the We Love Manchester 10K. It’s a fast start and finish on the running track with a few small undulations. I was hoping the sun wasn’t going to come out as it was already warm but at the 3k mark it made an appearance which made the race get tougher.

I had a target time to try and beat 43 minutes and finished in 42.09 and 11th female. The race was well organised with a friendly atmosphere with a nice medal and t shirt to finish. Another one for the diary for next year

Hitting the trails and breaking records

It’s been a bit of a trail running fest this week. Starting off in Worsthorne, via Witton Park and finally to Trawden you have truly been out in force this week. Off the trails there’s been some road racing, fell racing and smashing of course records.  Well done to Chris Holdsworth for his new course record at the Heptonstall Festival Fell Race and to Laura Hesketh for her new course record at Burnley parkrun.

Foreword from Club President, David Scott

Where did the morning go?

Having been away for several weeks, more or less incommunicado with home and the UK, I sat down on my return with a breakfast coffee and started to catch-up on Clayton’s ‘Roundups’.  Next thing I knew it was nearly lunchtime.

What a variety of races everyone has been running, representing country, representing county, representing club, raising money for charity, trying a new race or trying to beat a previous time.  The enthusiasm of those of you who wrote about your races really came through and you didn’t mind writing about how hard running can be, whether you’re out to beat a time or just to finish.

And what an age range, from Under 8 to Over 75.  I was wishing I was 40ish again, with the speed and stamina I once had and with all these events to choose from.

Thank you to everyone who has contributed in any way to the weekly roundups, the technical aspect of which largely passes me by. Clayton’s a wonderful club and I feel proud to be its President.

David Scott.

P.S. Reading about the ’22’ run up Pendle, took me back to a Saturday, many years ago……..but what WAS the date my memory asked?  Looking through my training logs I eventually found it to be 18th August 1979, (probably before some of the ’22’ runners were born) when John Haworth ran 15 times from the Pendle Inn to the Trig Point and back in just over 12 hours to raise money for Barley Village Council.  I had a school function in the morning so could only be there from 12 o’clock.  I ran the last 6 reps with him, approx. times being 48, 52, 60, 51, 59 and the last one was from the picnic area and back on a ‘Guess the Time’ raffle of 48.07.

CLUB SUMMER SERIES – WORSTHORNE TRAIL

Senior Race

Worsthorne trail race is the second race in the Clayton Harriers summer race series. Listed as a 5 mile race with around 1000ft of ascent this is always popular with our members and this year saw 41 seniors take part. As well as recording the finishing positions of runners, runners must give an estimated time for their run.

Chris Snell and Danny Collinge raced to the finish neck and neck with Chris just managing to pull ahead to take the win. Cassie Smedley was our first lady finisher. Nina Kewin gave the best estimate of the event with only 10 seconds difference between her estimate and actual finish time.

RACE FOR LIFE, WITTON PARK

My son Matthew and I took part in the Race For Life at Witton Park all for a good cause. I love this event and this time we were running for my dad. We set off together but that was short lived – Matthew was flying again and got round the course in 18.20 in 2nd place he wanted under 19 mins and with grandad watching he wasn’t going to fail. I tried to keep within sight which wasn’t easy and managed 5th place in 22.30

Report from Andy Holt

This was my second go at the Witton Park relays and, after informing the junior coaching staff my kids were available, I’d forgotten to tell John Cleaver about my own availability! As the date approached and spaces became available I was asked to join Michael Clarke and Adam Stephensons’ team as a late entry!!

Warm and dry underfoot with no wind made this mile up-mile down course even faster and running the last leg allowed me the possibility of having to run against my daughter. My son was running the first leg for another team so I was spared watching him disappear into the distance!

Thankfully Michael and Adam gave me a head start on Briony’s team, (nothing worse than feeling like you’re being chased down) and I had a clear run up the hill. Choosing grippy fell shoes worked and allowed me a flowing descent to the finish.

Brilliant fun, took 15 seconds off last year’s time, team finish well under 60 minutes and equally as satisfying knowing that Curtis, Briony and myself finished within 25 seconds of each other!

Big thanks to the team captains for the messing around and accommodating as many runners as possible.

BLACKFELL

Ivan Whigham and Wendy Dodds travelled over the border into the Yorkshire Dales to take part in the Blackfell race.

Report from Ivan Whigham

This race was run by Bingley Harriers as part of their running weekend. It is based in Kettlewell a very nice part in the Yorkshire Dales.

The weather was great with plenty of sun and a brisk breeze. About 60 runners set of with me and Wendy Dodds the other Claytoner.

The route is about 9 miles and goes round Cam Head, Whernside, Great Whernside and returns via Hag Dyke on the route of the Great Whernside race which is fast running on bowling green grass purely awesome.

I finished half way down the field in 1hour 50 with Wendy coming in a little later, a cracking race in beautiful scenery.

HEPTONSTALL FESTIVAL

A trio of Clayton runners took part in the Heptonstall Festival fell race. A 5.9 mile race with 1627ft of ascent. Starting in the hilltop village of Heptonstall, the route plunges deep into a neighbouring valley before finding its way to the top of a nearby peak. It then returns in similar fashion presenting runners with an almighty uphill struggle at the end!

Chris Holdsworth not only won the race, he also knocked over 2½ minutes off the course record at the same time. A superb result for a runner on top form at the moment. Carl Helliwell ran strongly to finish in 11th place and Simon Stansfield was 58th.

Report from Amanda Duffy

I headed over to the Lostock Hall Carnival 5k on Saturday morning. The race set off before the carnival procession. The course itself was a fairly flat out and back with a loop around the town to finish. It was a great carnival atmosphere with lots of support from the crowds. All roads were closed which made it much better for racing.

I finished 6th female and won the v35 prize with a second best 5k time. It is one I would like to run next year and was a great day out for everyone.

ALDERLY BYPASS 10K

Michelle Abbot and her two sons headed to Cheshire for the Alderley Edge Bypass 10K and fun runs.

Report from Michelle Abbott

Me and the boys had a change and headed over to Wilmslow for the Alderley Edge Bypass 10K and fun run. With about 2000 runners in the 10K, it was very busy, well organised with food ,beer ,and a funbus for the little ones. It was a fast course when the winner comes in in 29 mins; I just about managed a reasonable 47.11 while Lennon and Matthew whizzed round the 1.8K course in sub 6 mins with Lennon coming in 3rd closely followed by Matthew in 4th,   no official timing for the funrun as it is 100% all for charity

Yet another grand prix race arrived. I was looking forward to this one but hoped that I wouldn’t follow last year’s antics and fall mid race.

I set off far too fast, as always, but managed to find and maintain a good pace. I decided to try and stay focused on the paths rather than the views in order to remain on my feet. The race was great. Well-supported and great weather. Added bonus at the end as I’d pre-registered so got a pie and a bottle of good beer! Well done to all that raced.

Trails, fells and more

Midsummer madness is upon us with so many races to choose from it’s increasingly tricky keeping up with all of our intrepid racers.  This week has seen a huge turnout at the Sabden race, there’s been some high Lakeland fell running, as well as Peak District and Yorkshire races together with trails and 5ks. Plus the odd bit of triathlon action.

TUESDAY 20 JUNE

BRIDESTONE FELL RACE

This fell race goes past the famous Bridestone and takes in some of the lesser used paths in the upper Calder Valley. A short fast race with steep climbs, fast tracks and demon descents, something for everyone. Two Clayton Harriers took part. Richard Briscoe was our first finisher in 18th place and Colin Woolford was 39th.

Report from Colin Woolford

Bridestones is a classic Calder Valley fell race, in that for a short but steep valley, they seem to find an impressive amount of ‘up’ before a very short ‘flat’ mid-section before finding a lot of ‘down’. A small field enjoyed good conditions given the baking temperature of previous days. It’s a good race, well-marked and marshalled and on the trails less travelled for about 4 miles. It’s a good race for those looking to try a fell race. Although slower than the last time I did this, I was pleased with my run, as I seemed to be passing more people than passed me after the first mile. Probably not the best prep for the following evening’s Sabden 6 though!

 WEDNESDAY JUNE 21

 BOLTON ABBEY SOLSTICE SAUNTER

It was a family affair at the Bolton Abbey Solstice Saunter for Team Brewster. In a welcome return to racing Tom finished in 2nd place with Roger Brewster in 28th and 1st M60.

Report from Tom Brewster

I did the bolton Abbey summer solstice saunter on Wednesday organised by the airedale dodgers and in support of Sue Ryder care (Dad, Mum and my sister also ran). It was a 5mile route starting at the pavilion, running along the river to Barden Bridge then back along the other side to finish on the field opposite the pavilion. I had a good battle in the top three from the start and managed to finish in 2nd on a very hot, very humid night!! Very happy with the result especially after a very tough 9 months away from racing with Achilles issues!

SABDEN TRAIL RACE

Well over 60 Clayton Harriers took part in the latest race of the Pendle and Burnley Grand Prix Series, the Sabden Trail Race which is a 6 mile trail race around the Sabden area.

Report from Alan Dorrington

There’s a point when temperature and humidity combine to make things truly unpleasant. Hot temperatures can be pretty nice when the occasionally arrive in the UK, and most of the time our humid climate is not so hot as to cause too much bother. Sabden last Wednesday appeared to find itself in the middle of one of those unholy alliances where both measures were pretty high and it made for fairly brutal conditions for running.

None of which deterred 200 or so Grand Prix runners from belting off up the long drag through the Sabden Brook valley to Ratten Clough, some appearing to pace themselves wisely, others going all out. My rationale was that it was only 6 miles, only 750ft of climbing, what was the point in hanging about?

Happy Harrier

Happy Harrier

Those that had run before, or studied the race profile with more than a cursory glance knew what was coming. Some very fast running, but never flat, just up or down and then… that climb. The one I hadn’t bargained on. I knew something was amiss as we dropped down to Sabden from below Pendleton Moor and my watch said 4 point something miles. Whilst running on minimal oxygen levels, my brain was still just able to work out that there was more to come to make it 6 miles. And that the finish was definitely not coming any time soon as we were almost in the village. Cue that horrible feeling when your legs go from flat out downhilling to grinding uphill again, with no flat to help adjust. Cue some cursing under my breath at the helpful ‘tough mile now lads, dig in!’ comment. Mile??!

Luke Turner - first Clayton finisher. Photo by SportSunday

In the end it wasn’t too bad despite feeling like my head was going to explode in the humidity and I even enjoyed the death march up the reservoir bank, though David from SportSunday was optimistic if he thought he was going to get a star jump from me at that point. There followed a hectic blast back to the finish for that ‘lost’ distance to make up 5.9 miles, and the discovery on finishing that my vest weighed about 4lbs with the sweat it had soaked up and not evaporated. I was happy enough with 38th and a reasonable limiting of my time losses against the quick Vets around the 45- 55 age band that I’m in the middle of. What a great way to spend a Wednesday evening.

AGGIE’S STAIRCASE

Six Clayton runners took part in the Aggies Staircase fell race organised by Darwen Dashers.

Starting at the top of Punstock Road in Darwen, the route climbs a footpath, turns right onto the track past Robin Hood’s cottage, then left to follow an enclosed footpath to the main track, and left up to Darwen Tower. It then descends through a small quarry onto the main track towards the top of Bold Venture Park, before turning right to climb steeply up a rough path known as Jacobs Ladder, then across the moor top, and on down to the foot of Aggies Staircase.

Matt Perry was our first finisher in 4th place. Joanne Perry was our sole lady runner and she finished in 119th place.

DARREN HOLLOWAY MEMORIAL RACE

Andrew Laycock and Wendy Dodds took part in this classic fell race formerly known as the Buttermere Horseshoe. Wendy who was taking part 30 odd years after doing the original Buttermere Horseshoe race!

Report from Andrew Laycock

Headed up to the Lakes to do the Darren Holloway Memorial Buttermere Horseshoe. From the start in Loweswater the race covers around 23 miles with 8500ft of climbing and quite a bit scope for route choice. The weather wasn’t perfect, there wasn’t much visibility on the tops but at least the rain stayed away and it was pretty cool.

The first half of the race went smoothly, I settled into what felt like a manageable pace and got off Dale Head to Honister Pass feeling ok. From there I got into a group with a couple of local runners and we worked our way around Haystacks and up onto High Crag. A sudden bout of cramp just before the summit of High Stile left me on my own in the thick fog and once on the top I couldn’t find the checkpoint. After wandering around confused and frustrated for five minutes I realised I was on the wrong summit and the checkpoint was further west, this cost me six or seven places.

The following rough boggy descent left my legs cooked for the final climb up onto Melbreak so I was thankful for a fast runnable descent into the finish. Over five hours on the fells sure felt like a long day out, but definitely a learning experience.

ELDWICK GA

It was all about the girls  at this BOFRA race with some great running from Briony Holt and Ella Dorrington.

Report from Tina Hines Holt

Briony Holts ran at Kirkby in Furness on Saturday for BOFRA  It was a gradual steep road start which changed to a steep hill once entering the farmers field from the road. It was dry, windy and humid and felt like there was no air, which made it hard to breathe at times. Briony kept a good pace and secured 2nd place.

A DAY IN THE LAKES TRIATHLON

Report from Jon Cleaver

Peter Coates and I took on this half iron-man(ish) distance triathlon in Ullswater. Leg 1 was a swim in Ullswater consisting of 2 x 1km laps, there was quite a strong current and I swam 0.2km over distance. Next was the bike 48 miles through beautiful villages and countryside and on a long A road on the way back for 2 loops which was around 2500ft climbing. After that came what I was looking forward to a 12.8 mile Fell run to cap the day off with 1900ft of climbing.

Peter Coates and Jon Cleaver

Peter Coates and Jon Cleaver at the Day in the Lakes Triathlon

The run was stunning taking in trails and fell with some pretty steep climbs and thrown in at the end was a 5km road run which was not at all comfy in Fell shoes. Peter did fantastic coming in 13th overall and I came in 37th. A real bargain of an event for long tri enthusiasts and highly recommended. Great practice for the big one in 3 weeks!!

KINDER TROG

Report from Ivan Whigham

I arrived at Hayfield with rain forecast and as we set off we had rain for the first hour and low cloud causing poor visibility on Kinder.

Race went well until a group of local runners had their maps out lost in the mist! We had to return to the main route.

Visibility improved and found the last part of the race was more enjoyable, finishing in 2.40 will be back as it suits my running.

HOLCOMBE TWO TOWERS

In the first of three races this week Peter Coates joined Martin Brady for this mid week fell race.

Report from Peter Coates – Race 1

At the Holcombe Two Towers race there was just myself and Martin Brady in action for Team Clayton in this little gem of a midweek race organised by Holcombe Harriers. This is a short but surprisingly tough 4 mile fell race across and around Holcombe Moor with some steep climbs. I finished 7th overall out of a field of 109 and was first vet40 so a good evenings work which would hopefully sharpen me up for the big race at Tebay at the weekend.

MUCKLE TOON ADVENTURE FESTIVAL

Report from Dave Motley

Another annual pilgrimage to the Muckle Toon Adventure Festival for Team Perry, Team Motley & Team Clarke and this year we were joined by Team Helliwell. The festival based in Langholm in the Scottish borders is a mix of MTB, road sportive, trail running and on the event filed they have all sorts going on from trampolines to climbing walls and tent talks on various subjects. There is something for everybody from little kiddies right through to the most sporty of us, on top of this the weekend was topped off with camping, drinking and BBQ in the glorious Scottish Summer.

Muckle Toon Trail Races

Muckle Toon Trail Races. L-R Matt Perry, Jo Perry, Sarah Helliwell, Carl Helliwell, Dave Motley and Russ Clarke

The races themselves are tough and testing trail routes with lots of climbing and the 25 degree heat certainly didn’t help. The 10k & half marathon were on the Saturday and set off at the same time with a route split after about a mile. I found the initial climb tough after last week’s 22 for 22 on Pendle and the 85 miles in my legs was really showing. After the first few miles I found myself in about 7th or 8th but with a big descent to come I found my legs and seemed to carry the momentum through the field for the next 10 miles feeling stronger and stronger. I eventually finished the race in 3rd place managing to gain that position after about 12 mile. Matt Perry runner up at the race last year had to settle for another 2nd with Russ Clarke in 5th and Carl Helliwell in 12th.

Whilst us blokes were out doing the half, the wives were tearing up the 10k with Mrs Perry finishing the tough 10k course in 41st position in a time of 62:16 and Mrs Helliwell 51st in 65:46. Mrs Motley was chief babysitter on Saturday so I think she had the harder job looking after 6 kids whilst we got to run, however she did get her break and ran the 5k on the Sunday in a time of about 27mins. A belting weekend and Team Motley will be back for more in 2018

Report from Peter Coates Race No.2

Over 450 runners with a good turnout from Clayton lined up for this championship race in gloriously hot sunshine. The heat was going to make this 8.1 mile race with 3000Ft of ascent an absolute beast particularly with what was warned as being a extremely tough final climb up Blease Fell.

I soon settled into the race after what was quite a chaotic start to the race with runners choosing different lines up the rough track. I spotted Dave Bagot up ahead just before we began the climb to Rispa Pike and set my sights on reeling him in and managed to pass him on the boggy path just after the summit. The next few miles were a mix of killer climbs and fast descents. I still felt strong as I reached the summit of Linghaw and began an exhilarating descent off the fell towards the stream crossing before the final killer climb up Blease Fell which looked massive. This was a real tough climb in very hot weather but I managed a good climb and still felt strong when I finally reached the summit. It was then a case of running the final 2 miles on a long gradual descent back to the finish in Tebay.

What a fantastic race in stunning scenery in glorious sunshine and one which I thoroughly enjoyed running against the UK’s top fell racers. I finished just ahead of Dave Bagot who had a great race considering his heroics of the previous weekend on Pendle so massive respect to Dave!

Report from Sarah Angelone

Well what can I say about the freckleton half? It was the hardest race I’ve ever done!!! In scorching heat with no wind the hardest battle was not the physical pain but the mental battle to keep going. Luckily the water stations, armed with sponges and showers were a god send and something I eagerly kept a look out for throughout the route and after each one looked like I’d been for a swim never mind out for a run!!! Glad I got round the gruelling 13.2 miles but I wouldn’t want to do it again.

HELM HILL RACES

Report from Peter Coates –  Race No. 3

BOFRA race at Helm Hill Kendal.  I decided to do this race after we stopped up in the Lakes following the previous day’s race at Tebay.  This was my first BOFRA race and I enjoyed the low-key feel although with runners of the calibre of Ben Mounsey and Simon Bailey competing the quality of the field was definitely not low key.  This was a relatively short 3.3 mile race and I was not sure how the legs were going to feel following the previous days tough racing.  The race starts with the climb up Helm Hill and my legs felt dead going up the short climb but once at the top my race head took over and I tried to pick runners off were I could along the twisty paths and sharp climbs and descents.  I was pretty shattered at the finish but I did enjoy the race and didn’t do too bad considering.

BRITISH  ATHLETICS EUROPEAN MOUNTAIN RUNNING CHAMPIONSHIP TRIALS

 Report from Chris Holdsworth

Three Peaks Fell Race 2015 – Constant hail, sleet, snow and wind leading to mild hypothermia.

Tour of Pendle 2015 – Cramp so bad that I almost had to get evicted off the Big End for squatting so long… AND almost being beaten by Dave Motley *Shudder*

Edinburgh Marathon 2016 – re-aggravation of a hip injury from mile 15 and pushing through to the end (Possibly not so clever in hindsight).

Howarth Hobble 2017 – Blowing up with 6 miles to go after 26 miles of tough, boggy, brutal running and looking as well as Jonathon Brownlee did after THAT infamous moment.

Home International Race, Sedbergh 2017 – now joins the list of toughest races I’ve endured!

Making my England debut, I’d hoped to have kinder conditions, but the forecast (unsurprisingly for the middle of June) provided intense, windless heat on the Sedbergh Hills.

The race began shortly after 1pm and despite the weather, I quickly found myself in 2nd place on the tail of leading England runner Chris Smith. Having reduced my miles for the race, my legs were feeling very good. However, the warmth soon sapped and drained everything I had and I found myself in massive oxygen depletion earlier than usual. Summiting and returning down the way we came, I felt my dry and dehydrated hamstrings both begin to strain and pull… A painful run back down on tender legs, the next loop back round will be one I won’t forget in a while.

I’d never felt sick whilst running before, I’m usually quite adept at keeping myself composed and well, but the next slog up the climb brought on involuntary retching, blurred and diminishing vision, and the tightening of lungs, throat and every muscle in my legs.

Success for Chris on his England debut.

I was running for England though, there wasn’t any chance I was going to let my pace drop any further – so I clawed and battled my way back to the summit, and endured the pain all the way back down.

Finishing 6th in the World Mountain Trials race and 3rd in the Home Internationals, I was able to help England secure victory and a gold medal – as well as a bronze medal, two shredded hamstrings and one hell of an Englishman’s sunburn for myself… well worth the pain!!

TRAILBLASTER

A men’s team, a ladies’ team and a number of juniors gave the club a real presence at this year’s Trailblaster endurance event featuring laps in and around Towneley Park.

Report from Michelle Abbott

The event and support was amazing with loads of people coming down to give their support and run laps with us (too many to mention but you were all brilliant) which was amazing. It was definitely a bit too hot to be out for 12hrs, but with team and family support and pure grit we got through every lap together which paid off in the end. At 7.30pm already tired and ready for a lie down ,I was anxiously waiting for Nina to come in so I could get out and equal the record of 25 laps I knew I had to be back before 8 so that Cassie could get out and complete the 26th lap –  so no pressure!

After a hot 5 laps I was off with a little help from one of our juniors,Sophie, who ran the full lap with me and the support coming into the last 1.7 was amazing with George Pier running along with me for the last push. I got in with 3 mins to spare. we got the ladies 12hr team win and record! We will be back again. Such an amazing team effort – male and female.

Everyone worked really hard with well deserved wins all round even for our juniors who took on a full lap in the miniblaster. Matthew Jackson leading all the way with Lennon on his tail until the last K when Lennon pulled in front and won by 6 secs leaving Matthew in second – sibling rivalry keeps them pushing.

 Report from Lynsey Birtwistle

I can honestly say that this is one of the best days running I have ever had. Both teams performed so well in the heat and the team spirit was amazing. It was so hot out there and each lap got harder and harder.

Lots of friendly Clayton faces came down to cheer us on and join in with our massive spread of food in the party tent!!! The last couple of hours were brilliant and both teams worked well together to win both men’s and women’s team prizes. Cannot wait for next year!
