Going for gold

It may well have been super Saturday and Sunday at the Olympics but it was also a pretty awesome weekend for Clayton-le-Moor Harriers. Success galore for juniors and seniors and vets at a range of races this weekend. There have been wins, course records, PBs and age category triumphs all over the place.

WEDNESDAY 10 AUGUST

Pilgrims Cross Fell Race

A magnificent troupe of 7 Clayton-le-Moors Harriers took part in the Pilgrim’s Cross Fell Race, a 6 mile fell race organised by Rossendale Harriers with 1102ft of ascent.

Six Clayton men and one lady runner took part. Peter Coates was our first finisher in 19th place with a time of 46:59 followed by Alan Life in 20th place. Peter Dugdale, Stephen Fish, Michael Frost and Ron Chappell completed the Clayton Men. Sarah Helliwell was our sole lady runner and is continuing a return to form after a maternity break to finish in 121st place

Race Report from Sarah Helliwell

I could have quite easily stayed at home as the rain was lashing down and the night looked dark and grim, however, Carl gave me a kick up the backside and I set off to Helmshore. Pilgrims Cross is a 6 mile 300m plus evening fell race which is part of the Rossendale Summer Series. We were advised to take waterproof jackets as it was wet and breezy up on the tops. Wet it definitely was…

As we set off the race went up a narrow cobbled path which was slippy going up, never mind having to come back down it. My game plan was to stick with Stephen Fish for as long as I could. As we got onto the moorland the rain came down harder as you could see the line of runners strung out. I kept with Stephen over the first climb and descent past Pilgrims Cross before hitting the tricky section. This was where I started to lose contact as Stephen managed to get round runners, where I got held up. It was then back up past the cross and over Bull Hill before a steep descent passing a few runners on the way down.

We then climbed back up onto the moorland before the final descent which was tricky as you had to take on the slippy cobbles. I gave it my all to try and catch the runner in front whose back I nearly jumped on as we crossed the finish line. He said he still knew how to attract the ladies in his 70’s (for some reason the results have put me 8 seconds behind him.)

There were a number of Clayton runners with Peter as our first counter with Alan hot on his heels. I was chuffed with my time and being 1 minute behind Stephen. It was muddy, wet, dirty, hilly and a great route. One I would do again. Well done to all who ran.

FRIDAY 12 AUGUST

Shore 7K Road Race

Ian Hargreaves and Hayley Copeman took part in the 7K Shore Road Race. Ian finished in 22nd place with a time of 37:08 and Hayley was 24th overall and 1st W45.

Report from Ian Hargreaves

Hayley Copeman and I entered this race on the Friday 12th August. It is organised by Cannonball Events and is a lovely run over in Littleborough taking in the streets and small hills around the edge of the town. Only 28 managed to finish this race with my time a 37:08 for the 7K and an ever-improving, injury free run from Hayley, doing 43:29 despite managing to run the wrong way at one point! Hayley won best vet 45 which was handy as it was two large bottles of beer and we were camping over for the eventing. Whilst we did not enter the trail run Saturday or the fell run on Sunday, they were much better attended races and the people we met were as fabulous as ever.

Arncliffe Gala Fell Races & Littondale 4 Mile Road Race

There’s a choice of A BOFRA fell race or a 4 mile road race at this Yorkshire gala. In the senior fell race, Stephen Fish was our sole representative finishing in 78th place overall.

Paul Brannon took part in the Littondale 4 mile road race. He reports;

I’ve turned professional today! They slipped me an envelope and it contained money. That used to be a breach of your amateur status in the olden days but now, rather than dish out prizes, you can receive cash in an envelope! First 0-50 in a race I hadn’t done for thirteen years. It was a terrific day at the Arncliffe Gala though with loads of Clayton kids in the junior races. Dexta especially doing well winning his race outright.

Boulsworth Fell Race

Another good turnout of junior runners for the last set of junior races in this year’s Pendle and Burnley Grand Prix Series. This year has been the first time junior races have been included and have proved to be very popular with around 200 young runners taking part. Five of our junior runners took part in all 9 races; Emily Johnson (U8 Girls), Bronia Olszewska (U12 Girls), Natasha Olszewska (U14 Girls), Toby Birtwistle (U8 Boys), and Charlie Birtwistle (U12 Boys).

Charlie Birtwistle soon followed in 17th place. Summer Hargreaves led the Clayton girls home in 18th place overall; Kady Thompson was 27th and Bronia Olszewska was 35th.

Carl Helliwell was our first finisher in 10th place with Kirt Livesey, Matthew Duckworth, Chris Snell, Paul Hesketh and Garry Wilkinson all earning top 20 places; Paul Hesketh pipping Garry Wilkinson to the 1st V50 title. Thomas Bradley continued his solid Grand Prix campaign to take 1st U18 and 33rd place overall. Stephen Ainsworth was 1st M55. Donna Airey was our first Clayton Lady over the finish line with Elizabeth Mullan following soon after. Christine Leathley was 1st L65.

Report from Deborah Greenwood

The last one of the series, and boy was that a though one! Having never competed in anything like these races before, I have now completed 11 and thoroughly enjoyed each one. Every time I have said, “that was the toughest!” Yesterday, Boulsworth lived up to that title. It was indeed steep, it was indeed muddy, and the first three miles seemed like ten.

Because of the steep incline at the beginning, I found myself suffering oxygen deprivation, however, I had a secret, end of season weapon – due to injury my big brother ran at my side pushing me along, literally pushing me along at some points, and what a difference it made! Although I wanted to walk all of the hill, I was not allowed. The downhills were great fun and I found my form on these. I only wish my little legs could keep the same momentum on the flat or the uphills. Finishing in the show ground was a real boost with lots of people (and dogs and cows and sheep!) to cheer you home.

Fabulous Clayton team made all us newbies feel very welcome in our first season and I for one will be back next year for more punishment.

Report from James Boult

This was one of the hardest races of the series so I am really happy to have finished in 37th position out of 135 and even prouder to have completed all 14 races in my first ever Grand Prix Series to finish in 18th place overall.

It’s amazing to see the progress I have made this season and I couldn’t have done it without the amazing support of the Clayton-le-Moors Harriers family. I never in a million years thought I would make the top 20. Very proud of everyone who has taken part in this year’s Grand Prix, and to all the organisers and marshals for their hard work.

Lowther Trail Run

This scenic route takes the runner across Askham Fell and the Lowther Valley. It is a 13 mile route with about 1400ft of ascent. The route climbs through Askham village onto the fell to Heughscar Hill where the route turns south and descends to the Cockpit and onwards across the valley of Heltondale to Butterwick. After fording the River Lowther, a stiff climb follows onto Knipe Scar to the most southerly point on the course. From here the route turns north across the grassland of Lowther Park to Whale. A track above the River Lowther leads runners to the finish at Lowther Castle.

Congratulations to Christopher Holdsworth who won this race as well as setting a new course record. 143 runners took part in the event.

Race Report from Chris Holdsworth

Having visited Lowther Park many times attending Kendal Calling each year, finding out that there was race there had me very keen to return and trade beer and music for running and trails!

Christopher Holdsworth setting a new course record at the Lowther trail race

Christopher Holdsworth setting a new course record at the Lowther trail race

I researched into the race and discovered the previous record was set on a 13 mile course over trails and fells, and knew on a good day that it was within my grasp to break it. However, the course was much tougher than expected! After the 6 mile mark, the course becomes a lot trickier as we traverse through tall grass, thistles, ferns and even rivers. At the last checkpoint before the finish, roughly 3 miles before the end, I knew I had to put a shift in if I were to break the current course record.

Thankfully, I managed to push on to break the record by 19 seconds in 1:19:26. It was a fantastic race with great organisation. Afterwards we ventured into the show itself, which was hugely popular and had a vast amount of stalls and attractions for the large crowds visiting. A great day out – I’ll hopefully be back next year to see if I can extend that record further.

Christopher Holdsworth had an excellent run in this tough fell race that forms part of the English Championships this year. With a huge climb up to the summit of Scafell it’s no easy run for sure. Chris finished in 25th place with a time of 03:19:17.

Report from Richard Briscoe

Borrowdale Fell Race – a day of torture. It was the English championship race of the Borrowdale Fell Race. I thought I’ll give it a go as I did it last year to see if I could beat last year’s performance. The race is one of the toughest in the lakes with over six thousand feet of climbing over tough terrain and 16 miles running.

I thought at the start to take it slow and steady. Getting to the first check point I was going over a stile and Richard Bellaris flew past me and said don’t worry about him he is an old man in a funny way. Later on we were getting towards Scafell Pike and had to climb boulders which was hard work and up to the summit.

The weather was perfect for the race. From the summit of Scafell Pike you have to go down the corridor which is a steep scree which was quite fun falling down it, with rocks flying at me. At the bottom of the corridor route got to Sty Head I felt shattered as I haven’t done a long run for ages. I felt like packing it in, but after pulling out of the Three Peaks early in the year I better do this one. I was nice to see Joss Naylor who was watching the race at Sty Head he gave me support and some energy sweets. I felt ok then as the big climb up Great Gable. From the top of there was a nice run on the grass over to Honister pass, to the slate quarry.

There were plenty of supporters there and that was good. The last climb was up Dale Head which is a long plod, and for some reason near to the end of the race I felt fine. Then the last descent was down past the quarry at Dale Head to the summit. The last part killed me as Darren Fishwick from Chorley gave me support and said you look shattered but I got round. Shame I didn’t beat my time from last year but I’m hoping to beat 5 hours next time

Hellifield Gala Fell Race

The first ever gala was held in Hellifield in 1969 and was called the Youth’s Gala. Although there were children’s sports, there was no fell race until the early seventies when a cross country race was organised which, like the present day fell race, went over Haw Hill. In 2002, the route was changed following the building of a new housing estate at the back of the old auction mart, although Haw Hill is still the main feature of the race. The course record is presently held by Yorkshireman and Olympic Triathalon Champion, Alistair Brownlee.

Report by Peter Browning

What a cracking little race! A beautiful sunny day, three and a half miles with three good climbs and descents, straw bales to get over fences, and aluminium ladders to get over walls with a two meter drop on the downside if you chose the wrong ladder! Plus a Clayton hero giving up his race to help a fellow competitor in distress. What more could you want?

I don’t know how it can be listed as a BS race in the FRA calendar – it was definitely an A in my book. There were also plenty of Junior races which were keenly contested, plus the Gala favourites such as egg and spoon and sack races.

Four Claytonners took part. Steve Fish was the hero who stopped to help a young girl who had collapsed on the run back in. Along with former Clayton runner Andy Holden, he helped her off the fell and onto a quad bike that brought her back with no ill effects. Well done Steve.

72 runners completed the course and the Clayton finishers were Peter Browning, Jude Ashworth, Michael Frost and Stephen Fish.

Asda Foundation York 10K

Offering a flat, fast course, this race takes runners on a tour past the York Minster, the city walls and attractions such as Clifford’s Tower and the Shambles. Starting and finishing at the Knavesmire, the York 10K is a fantastic challenge for all abilities.

Team Holdsworth were indubitably visible in this popular 10K race. Even with Borrowdale the day before, Chris Holdsworth still ran an excellent time of 37:30 to finish in 39th place. Breton Holdsworth finished 3 seconds ahead on no doubt much fresher legs!

Clennell Trail Half Marathon

Report from Andrew Webster

This was my 2nd outing at a High Fell Events run so I knew to expect more bang for your buck than the stated distance!! After registering and having a spot of porridge to get the body ready it was safety brief with the notorious words “and the finish might not be what you expect”, and we were off.

Andrew Webster

Andrew Webster at the Clennell  Trail Half Marathon.

This race had been entered as a joint venture between me and my mate Shaun but after his unfortunate bout of d and v Friday/ Saturday he could only drag up the first hill before he wisely decided to drop back before he caused any dramas. This was a shame as after the first flat 2 miles trail to warm up it was the first of the climbs up a drovers trail to gain height before undulating over the spectacular Cheviot Moorland tops. A couple of nice descents and climbs brought you to the 7-mile mark were the marathon distance split off at the feed station and the half doubled back into a valley before crossing an old Bailey bridge and a massive calf shredding climb (almost literally) that evened out into rolling moorland and bog before dropping back off to a logging road.

Andrew Webster at the Clennell Trail Half Marathon

Andrew Webster at the Clennell Trail Half Marathon

Knowing the organisers evil twist of mind I recovered down there not haring off like a loony. This was a good plan as after a couple of miles of lovely trail descent the course bounded off the edge through a load of bracken and a very formidable and tricky descent to the valley bottom before pointing you off again to a “hill” that you were literally crawling up till half way it was great!!! From the top of there, it was a flattish run over to the other side and a lovely descent down to a forestry block, skirting the edge to hit a grassy trail down to the back of the hall to finish. Half?? No more like 14.5 even though my Garmin didn’t count the vertical. A great event well worth a look on the website for their others even though it’s a long way up but a great way to make a weekend of it!

Report from Jon Cleaver

Worsthorne trail is a tough course, starts off on a 2-mile climb (after hurdling a fence) up a stony track on the Pennine Bridleway and it is brutal. You eventually get onto the soft ground which was really boggy in places and I fell over and got covered at least once. Get to the bottom and it levels out then a fast descent which had quite a bit of headwind. Chris Snell and I worked hard to shelter each other and keep the pace on, at the bottom then another climb up and I felt my legs starting to go and Chris pulled away.

I could see Louisa gaining ground as we climbed out from the reservoir and on to the final downhill section. Chris was too far for me to close, but I had a tough challenge keeping Louisa behind me. I gave it everything in that last mile and just got a nose in front. Really enjoyed the race and a pint in the Billet at the end!

Racing into the holiday season

Schools out at last and the summer holidays have started in earnest, but there doesn’t appear to be much downtime amongst the Clayton clan, younger or older, as road PBs, tough ultras, Guides racing, crazy scree slope running and general hard racing have continued unabated this week. From 1k to 100 miles, there has been a Clayton runner (or 56) in the mix somewhere this week, so give yourself all a big pat on the back after this weeks efforts.

Wednesday

Padiham Greenway

A balmy summer evening greeted a huge contingent of Clayton runners for the final road round of the Burnley and Pendle Grand Prix. Whilst the adults dominated the Senior race in terms of numbers (with Tom Bradley winning the Junior category too), the Clayton Juniors dominated their races in terms of results, with wins for Finlay Stubbs (U10B), Robbie Smedley (U12B), Ella Dorrington (U12G), Nick Hennessey (U14B), Millie Stubbs (U14G) and Aaron Lundie (U16B).

Ambleside Sports

The Lakeland weather wasn’t exactly on its best behaviour for this traditional and popular summer show, drizzle alternating between bouts of heavier rain and visibility fairly minimal to the hills surrounding the showground. In between grass track cycle racing, traditional wrestling and hound trails, there were 2 sets of fell races with the Rydal Round (aka Fairfield Horseshoe) heading off first but on a shortened route round Nab Scar and back, on account of the bad weather. Then the BOFRA sanctioned Guides races kicked off on the traditional short, sharp and very steep format for this type of show.

Saturday

Lakeland 50 and 100

There’s been some epic action in the Lakes over the course of the weekend in the Montane Ultra Tour of the Lake District 50 and 100 milers. Richard John ran the 50, and Martin Terry and Adrienne Olszewska the 100 miler.

First up with a report is Richard John:

It seemed like a good idea at the time – combine my (sometime) love for running and for the Lake District and enter the Lakeland 50! That was nearly a year ago and over the past six months I have been trying to turn myself into a trail runner after only road running before. Before this year, anything steeper than the hill from Gt Harwood to Rishton was just not for me. So it was with some trepidation that I lined up at Dalemain for the lunch-time start with 50 miles and almost 10,000ft of climbing ahead of me. The weather conditions were just about perfect – dry but not hot with plenty of cloud cover. For me, the first twenty miles were somehow the hardest as I just couldn’t seem to find a rhythm and all sorts of niggles, real or imagined, were getting into my head. A peanut butter sandwich at Mardale Head, however, sorted me out and the next 20 miles were really enjoyable with the highlight being running through Ambleside at 8pm and getting massive support from the roadside. I had never run in the dark before (poor preparation!) and this was what I was most worried about – but, as it turned out, I quite enjoyed this part. I was going pretty slow by this point anyway and the darkness didn’t seem to slow me down any further for the last 10 miles as I made my way up Great Langdale and then over an endless final climb past Tilberthwaite to the finish at Coniston at just after 1am. The two things I will remember most about the day (and night) were the fantastic support at all the checkpoints, in fact the whole organisation was superb, and – most of all – the inspiration I drew from meeting and passing the Lakeland 100 runners doing twice the distance after setting off from Coniston the evening before. They are quite amazing! Oh and one final memory – being chased by a cow at Elterwater, which taught me that I still have a decent change of pace even after 30 miles of running.

Adrienne Olszweska still managed to find the energy after a slightly strenuous weekend to send this report:

The Ultra Tour of the Lake District offers a 50 mile or 105 mile course to runners. Having completed the 50 mile course in 2014, I was determined to get the 105 mile race done as well.

This event is the most amazingly well organised event I have ever taken part in. Race director Marc Laithwaite gives an inspirational runners brief which is a mix of comedy and good advice. The dropout rate on this race is quite high and around 30% of runners don’t finish.

The race starts and finishes in Coniston. There are 14 checkpoints on the 100 and 3 compulsory unmanned checkpoints as well. The runners set off at 6:00pm and the run through Coniston at the start is fabulous with everyone cheering you on as you head up the Miners Track for the long slog up the Walna Scar Road. There are some big climbs in the first 30 miles and the introduction of additional cut-off times added some pressure.  The climb out of Wasdale up and over the Black Sail pass followed by another climb to Scarth Gap was my biggest worry but was nowhere near as horrendous as I’d anticipated despite a couple of falls. Got to Buttermere checkpoint in good time where I knew some of the marshals and had the best chocolate milkshake in the world – ever!

Up and over to Braithwaite via Sail Pass, another tough climb. It was beginning to get light here so the downhill section to the checkpoint wasn’t too bad. The next section is much kinder and there’s a longish road section before contouring around the base of Blencathra and sampling the legendary chocolate cake at Checkpoint 6.

There’s an alteration to the course after this checkpoint as some of the bridges on the old railway track were washed away in the December floods so there’s an unmanned checkpoint to ensure runners stick to the route. Then another climb up to the Old Coach Road – aka the road to nowhere. It’s around 5 miles along here and, very frustratingly, you can see the plantation of trees at the end all the way and they never seem to get any nearer. After some serious jogglin’, checkpoint 7 at Dockray was almost in sight. This checkpoint is run by Newburgh Nomads so it was wonderful to see so many familiar faces and, quite frankly, be rather pampered by them!

The leg to Dalemain is the longest leg at just over 10 miles. The first half is a very enjoyable run around Aira Force and around Gowbarrow with stunning views of Ullswater. Then after a tedious road section, you reach the checkpoint at Dalemain and at 60 miles you are over halfway. It’s an important checkpoint where you can have your drop bag. I had a change of shoes and clothes here. Nick was marshalling and it was running like clockwork so a big cheer for Nick ‘Bagman’ Olszewski! It was great to see him – not much pampering though as he kicked me out and sent me on my way.

Nic O (far left) as the 'bagman'

Nic Olszweski (far left) as the ‘bagman’ at the MASH themed Dalemain checkpoint.

The next two sections were tough. The section from Howtown to Mardale Head has the highest climb up the Fusedale Valley and up to High Kop. It’s a long slog and then after a drop down to Haweswater it’s another slog right around the valley to Mardale Head. Tiredness was beginning to take hold and I knew it would be dark again before I got to Kentmere. After a slow climb up Gatesgarth pass I was really slowing down and feeling weary. At the checkpoint I was served fruit smoothies by famous ultra-runner Marcus Scotney who was dressed up as a wizard; obviously a Harry Potter theme this year.

After leaving the checkpoint and climbing up Garburn Pass, I hit a real low point. I was so tired I could barely walk in a straight line and was feeling very down. I told the person I’d spent the whole course with to go on without me and she did! So there I was on my own thinking it was all over. I spent a while pondering on whether to go back to Kentmere which was nearer or press on to Ambleside. Fortunately, what little common sense I had left prevailed and I decided to go on to Ambleside. Not long after this a few runners caught up with me. They were all pushing hard to hit the cut off time. It was just the wakeup call I needed and before I knew it, I was trotting down into Ambleside checkpoint and straight back out to Chapel Stile determined to finish.

The second dawn as I was alongside Elterwater was just stunning and I knew I would get to Chapel Stile checkpoint in time. I was going to finish this thing. There’s a climb out of the Langdale Valley up and over to Tilberthwaite checkpoint where they push you onward up the steps to the finish at Coniston. It’s about the same distance as a parkrun to the finish but probably the toughest parkrun in the world. Nick had finished his marshalling and met me on the way over which was good and bad in equal parts. Good to have the support but annoying to see him skipping along the track like a gazelle when I was trudging along!

I hit the Miner’s track and started running. I kept running right to the end with such fantastic support from all the people in Coniston and made it to the finish with just a few minutes to spare feeling completely epic.

Adrienne Olszweska – Lakeland 100 finisher!

Congratulations also to Martin Terry who had an absolutely superb run finishing in 25th place in 26:47:31. Also Richard John who ran the 50 course in 13:39:20.

Farleton Knott BOFRA

More Junior action again, with the usual suspects returning up the M6 to that limestone lump you always drive past on the way to the Lakes.

Josh McKay and Felix Thompson were 4th and 6th respectively in the U9 race whilst Dexta Thompson got his first BOFRA win in the U12. Jenson Bentham was 9th in that race with Ella Dorrington 10th (3rd Girl) and Kady Thompson 28th. Jackson McKay was the sole Clayton representative in the U14s, coming in 7th.

Special mention too for Briony Holt who hard on the heels of her 2nd place U14 Girls Junior FRA Champs result, continued her unbeaten run in BOFRA races to sow up the U17 Girls Championship in that series, winning 8 out of the 8 races she has started this season. And she’s still only 14!

Richard Briscoe once again took on sole responsibility of representing the club in the Seniors race, finishing a very tough 4.5 miles in 46th and 52:42.

James Herriot Country Trail Race

Pete Browning and Chris Paul made their way over to Famous Vet country for this one and Pete reports back from their race:

I’m usually quite hard line about the fell races I do. 3 basic rules: No fun runs, No races with silly names, No C grade races. However, after a good two days at Thirsk races where I managed to secure a creditable score draw with the bookies, I was ready for a race and the James Herriott Country race was close by. Yes it broke all my 3 rules, but it was in the FRA calendar, so it must be a reasonable race, must’nt it?
The race starts and finishes at Bolton Castle near Leyburn in the Dales, and fell running super star Carl Bell from Keswick was present. As I climbed up through the start fields thinking I was the only Clayton runner, an unknown Clayton vest surged past me. No idea who it was, a lot younger than me, tattoos on the right arm. Anyway, as we reached Lord Bolton’ s grouse moor, the course levelled out and we spent the next five or so miles running on stoney land rover tracks. The last couple of miles were more grassy, but we finished with a final mile of land rover track. Very fast going throughout and sore feet all round. At the finish I sought out the unknown Clayton vest and was pleased to meet Chris Paul for the first time. Definitely a trail race, but a good workout.

Widdop Fell Race

Five Clayton-le-Moors Harriers took part in this little toughie of a mid-week fell race. It’s a 7 mile course with 1201ft of ascent. The high moorland route follows good and interesting paths with a few tussocks and chest high bracken thrown in (head height bracken in my case!).

Report by Adrienne Olszewska

My daughters were taking part in the junior races so I though why not have a run out myself. This is a tough but enjoyable race with a bit of everything.  The start takes runners a little way down the road from the Pack Horse pub before grinding to a (some might say welcome) stop as everyone queues politely to get past a stile. On the first climb the pack begins to spread out and stiles and gates are no longer stopping points.

Up and over to the Lower Gorple Reservoir and same again to Widdop Reservoir before the slog up the track to the moors. Some good paths and some rough stuff in equal measure for the next couple of miles with a bit of bogginess that I managed to fall in. After that a really enjoyable downhill gets you going again until you hit a short and steep road section to re-join the path that contours back around to the start. This year the bracken is big – really, really big and I was submerged in it most of the way back to the bottom of the finish field.

This is a great race and it would be even better if there were few more Clayton runners doing it next time.

Clayton-le-Moors Harriers Navigation Workshop

Clayton Members Colin Woolford and Mark Nutter combined 40 years of experience in fell running, mountain marathons, adventure racing and orienteering to put on a workshop to help develop navigation skills. They put on an excellent session that was interesting, relevant and backed up with a navigation challenge event to put new found skills into practice.

Report from Sarah Helliwell

We both decided to seize the opportunity and take advantage of the wealth of knowledge that the club has to offer on fell running and navigation. With the kids at the grandparents and the sun shining we set of to Whitehough near Barley.

Everyone was greeted by Colin and Mark with coffee and pastries as we soon got down to the theory side of map reading! We covered a variety of areas from using your compass correctly, identifying the difference between man-made markers and natural markers. Plus learning new terminology such as; ‘re-entrants, ‘saddles’ ‘thumbing’ and ‘hand rails’.

After some good discussions and map reading tasks it was time to put this into practice. We were all given electronic dibbers and the task of finding 10 checkpoints using the navigation map they provided us. This was a great way for us to put our new skills into practice!

We ran the course as pair, this was the first time we had actually run together and I was worried at being too slow for Carl. However, I really enjoyed running with him and it was great to see Carl leading the way with the map reading and regularly using his compass. As before this course I would have confidently said I would have had very little faith in him… 😉

We were chuffed as we got all of the 10 checkpoints and felt like we did it as efficiently as we could.

Checkpoint 5

We would like to say a massive thank you to Colin Woolford and Mark Nutter who put a lot of preparation and planning into the day’s events, putting out the dibbers at 6.30am and collecting them back in late into the evening. We would fully recommend the course and we hope that other club members get the opportunity to do it.

Conti 24 Hour Thunder Run

The Conti Thunder Run is a 24 hour off-road relay race against the clock. It can be run solo, in pairs or teams of 5 or 8. The organisers claim that it’ll test your tactics, endurance, speed and team work. It’s described as an exhilarating, rewarding and tiring race with a great atmosphere. Runners complete as many 10K (?) laps as they can in a 24 hour period.

Four club members took part. Dave Motley and Danny Collinge joined runners from a range of other clubs to make up Team Cannonball and take 3rd place in the Teams 6-8 race. The team completed 34 laps with Dave Motley running 5 of them and Danny Collinge running 2.

Nerina Gill and Julia Rushton took part in the individual female event and took on as many laps as they could during the 24 hours. Nerina Gill finished 12th overall and ran an impressive 12 laps. Julia finished in 22nd place having completed 9 laps.

Nerina Gill and Julia Rushton after the 24 hour Conti Thunder Run

I did my first Thunder Run about six years ago as part of a team of eight. There was a lot of hanging around waiting to run, so I was back the next year as part of a team of five, and was really chuffed to run five 10k laps. I never thought then I’d be running it solo five years later. Last year Julia and I ran Endure 24 in Aldermaston, but the Thunder Run on Derbyshire/Staffs border is closer, and more interesting, so that was the choice this year. Endure 24 (5 mile laps) had given us targets to beat: Julia wanted to run more than 80k, and I wanted to run more than 104k.
We set off at noon, near the rear of the pack with the rest of the solo runners. We had signs on our backs identifying us as solos, and with our names and the Clayton logo and vest strap. Our race numbers were also colour coded (orange!) to identify us as solos from the front. It meant that right from the start fellow runners and spectators gave us extra support, and that gave us a real boost.
There was more support from the team from Cannonball, with some familiar faces and Trawden vests along the way, and shout outs around the course. By midnight on Saturday Julia had run six laps, and I had done seven. It was time to grab some sleep before catching the dawn. By 0430 we were back on the course, now pleasingly familiar, but sufficiently varied to be interesting. The regular hills meant walking breaks could be looked forward to, the technical sections in the woods were fast and dry, and the field margins were firm underfoot. The sections bordering the massive camping fields provided lots of welcome support to keep us going, and one team had set up an extra drinks station, which was a lifesaver in the heat.
I realised that I’d done thirty miles on the Sunday of Endure 24, so to make the most of the extra mileage I’d done on the Saturday, I needed to match that. That meant five laps, and I needed to start the final lap before noon. Julia decided to call it a day after a fantastic 90k – 10k more than last year – so I set off on my final lap on my own, taking my total to 120k in 24:25.
The Thunder Run is a true festival of running, like a runners’ equivalent of Glastonbury. There are 2,500 runners, mostly in teams, and of all shapes and sizes and abilities. The first solo male completed 19 laps, and there are people in big teams who run just one. But everyone is part of the great atmosphere, the mutual support, and the heady feeling of being part of something special. You know that “never again” feeling? It’s already gone.

This is local stomping ground for many of our runners so some great results and, with the addition of a set of junior races, it was fantastic to see so many club members spanning the generations from the age of 6 right up to 73; boys and girls, men and women.

A Testing 10 – Report from Mick Hughes

Following a week of hot, humid weather came race 11 of the Pendle & Burnley Grand Prix (Towneley 10k). Slight showers presided just before the off and it remained a humid 68 degrees F. A series of junior races preceded with excellent attendance and many mini orange striped vests could be seen amongst the showing from several clubs and the junior Harriers once again riding high on the results tables for all races (A testament to the excellent training and development continuing in growth at the club).

As a very new member, and relative newbie to the hilltops, I was slightly nervy and the banter with fellow Harriers at the Stables Café pre-race was a welcome diversion.

The senior turn out was a terrific example of how popular the PBGP and local races have become as I saw vests of so many clubs, some from as far afield as Fylde coast, Morecambe, Prestwich & Lancaster. 11am came and the route left Towneley via a lap on the concrete path and slight pull up through the woods (luring us into a false sense of security, especially those who set off with a little hasty pace!) to exit onto Todmorden Road. The humidity kicked in as our legs started feeling the strain as we hit the elevations of the dreaded Mount Lane leaving walk mill and winding up to the heights of Red Lees Road (at least with the solace of great views of our mill town in the distance). I had a quiet word with myself and pushed on through the aches until we levelled out near the fighting Cocks Pub. Most of the runners around me seemed to recover a little and manage to pace up slightly.

After (according to my watch) 486ft of elevation we finally turned left guided by one of many lovely marshals, and descended down the steep track back into Towneley Park to the welcome sound of those cheering us on. As a newbie I was of course super keen to represent the club well and managed to our overtake and gain a few places to the cry of ‘c’mon Clayton’!.

I could see several Harriers and Trawden Vests (usual rapid suspects and seasoned runners) already through the finish and I didn’t have much left in the tank as I managed the final lap and stretch to the finish. John Roche patted me on the back and asked me how I’d got on.. I have to agree with his words exactly ” It’s a hilly course that”!.

3 Harriers came in within the top 10 with times under 40 mins and the overall representation and results for us across all age groups look great. It’s started out, and will remain a personal challenge training and improving on the hill climbs for me, but looking at my fellow club runners and the progress we see every race, long may it continue.t

Climb Every Mountain

It’s been a week of mountains, uphills and downhills, trails and running festivals with a sprinkle of road running to make it a perfect mix! There’s a report from the Dolomite Skyrace, results from the Snowden Mountain race and fell running galore at Worston, Bull Hill, Cracoe and the Lakeland classic, the Kentmere Horseshoe. You’ve been on the trails around Barley, Castle Howard and thumping the, sometimes rather steep, tarmac at the Pendle Running Festival and the somewhat flatter roads of Cheshire and Lytham.

Bollington Nostalgia Hill Race – 10 July

The 12th Bollington Nostalgia Hill Race, organised by the Bridgend Centre took place on Sunday 10th July 2016. One hundred and twenty four runners enthusiastically took on the challenge of the 11.4km multi terrain route over road, pasture, high moorland and canal towpath in the beautiful countryside around Bollington. David Rutley, MP for Macclesfield, was on hand to start the race and send the runners on their way with much encouragement.

The weather was kind and it remained dry until just after the start of the race at 11am, there were small showers but this helped to keep competitors cool.

Ivan Whigham was our sole representative in this race, he reports;

Conditions were good and the pace was fast on trails, paths and canal. I was outclassed by mainly road runners but gained on the uphill and downhill parts of the course. This race would suit a novice for a first fell race as it was a marked course. This is the 2nd time I’ve done the race and will do it again as Bollington is a pretty place.

A few of the older junior runners took part in the senior races but there was still a turnout of 16 juniors. Just 2 runners in the U8/U10 race. Rachel Stevenson finished first with Ellisia Smedley chasing her for second place.

In the U12/U14 race Christopher Brown had a great run to finish in first place. Helana White was our first girl to finish.

Just like the senior runners the juniors also had the extra challenge of estimating their times.

Cheshire Half Marathon

Report from Jonathan Cleaver

There were just two Clayton runners registered, myself and Dan Plant, both keen to post good times on what’s supposed to be a flat fast course at Arley Hall in Knutsford.

John Cleaver at the Cheshire half marathon

It’s a closed road course (which had cars on it), 2 laps through some beautiful countryside. The weather for once was on our side with dry sunny conditions with a light breeze.

Jon Cleaver’s shirt that acurately predicted his time.

The course lived up to expectations with speed and set off pretty well averaging 06:20 miles for the first 10km and then the efforts from the week before started to catch up with me. I ended up with a PB of 01:24:19 and Dan came in just over the 01:30 mark. It’s a course I could definitely do better on next year with opportunities to keep the faster pace going for longer.

It’s a highly recommended course for PB and half marathon first timers!

Dolomites Skyrace

Andrew Firth took part in this tough, Italian mountain race finishing in 594th place overall with atime of 3:42:25. There were 786 finishers.

Report from Andrew Firth

The Dolomites Skyrace held its 19th edition this weekend in Canazei, Val di Fassi. The event comprises a vertical kilometre race, i.e. a height gain of 1km which took place in sunny conditions on Friday. I was just a spectator for this and caught the cable car to the mid station and then marched Dinah upwards for approx. half an hour to the finish line at the top of Crepa Niegra, which overlooks the town. Whilst it was sunny there was a freezing cold wind on top which made spectating a bit uncomfortable. Anyway we enjoyed watching the elite competitors who made the impossibly steep climb look easy with most of the continentals using walking poles.

The main event started bright and early at 8.30 on Sunday and when we parked up at about 7.30 it was very chilly since the sun was hidden by the mountain. It was clearly going to be very sunny and warm once we got into the sun, but it did feel weird putting sun cream on when it was so cold – I wore my down Pertex to the start!

This was my fourth attendance at this event, having completed in 2008, 2009 and 2011, but I have only done the full route to the top of Piz Boe once in 2008, the subsequent events were shortened due to snow on the route, and so I had done 3 different routes previously.

We were told that there were 1200 entrants this year, although I never managed to get a list prior to the race. I started right at the back, and it felt like a London Marathon type start where you can’t run properly for quite a while. Eventually breaking into a jog as we left the town streets and started on the way up the ski run I found I was passing a few and felt quite good. The cool mountain air felt good in the lungs and I was surprised at how I felt, my reccy of the lower slopes the Sunday before had felt very laboured in the heat of mid-morning and I had been quite apprehensive about the race as a result. It took quite a while to gain height and come out of the mountain shadow on the approach to Pordoi Pass when the heat started to make itself felt.

Looking back at the Dolomites Skyrace. Photo by Andrew Firth

Looking back at the Dolomites Skyrace. Photo by Andrew Firth

Pordoi Pass is around 7500 ft above sea level, and there is a road that snakes its way to the summit. I had cycled up the road the previous week which took me an hour to the top. The road does zigzag quite a bit, and even though the run goes straight up I was pleased to match that on foot, particularly because I then still had a further hour to make the only cut-off of 2 hours to the top of Forcella Pordoi. The next bit is an impossibly steep zigzag up a scree slope which brings you to the plateau below Piz Boe. A gel and just concentrating on putting one foot in front of the other finally got me to the cut-off with just over 10 mins to spare. I looked down at those behind and thought there are going to be a substantial number of disappointed people.

At last I could get running again, passing people regularly across the plateau (including quite a few patches of dodgy compacted snow). The climb up to Piz Boe becomes a bit of a scramble with fixed wires to hold onto for safety. I had set off with just Clayton vest, but at this point I started to get quite cold with the biting cold wind at altitude. Hands in particular were suffering but because of the precarious climb I didn’t want to start messing with my bumbag so just put up with it. Soon we were at the top, over 10000ft and 2 hrs 15mins of continuous climbing, but at least it was downhill all the way back, or so I told myself.

The downhill starts with a very technical descent, followed by a steep loose scree to the plateau. Normally I love this type of terrain, but in trying too hard to pass I came a cropper early on the scree – no serious damage except to my pride, but psychologically it certainly had the effect of slowing me down to make certain of foot placements.

The memory is a strange thing when it comes to mountain running, after traversing the plateau for a short time we started to climb again, surely that can’t be right. Well I don’t remember it from 2008, but we were all following the markers.

Eventually we came to the next steep scree descent where I continued to make measured progress, passing quite a few, but being circumspect with foot placement. The descent does take a lot out of you, being 12km as opposed to 10km uphill. Eventually we reached Val Lasties where the gradient eases off a bit, and whilst still quite stony there is a bit more route choice if you fancy going off piste. There was a group on the path in front holding me up, so I veered off to the left on uneven grass/rock. Just as I had overtaken the group I noticed that the path had improved significantly so made a move back to the right to regain it, as I did so I tripped over a rock and fell full length at the feet of the group I had just over taken. Again no serious damage, just a skinned knee, but it again hit my descending confidence probably slowing me up a bit for the remaining descent which seemed to be going on a bit.

On the lower part of the descent they had definitely made a change in the route, what felt like an unnecessary diversion and horror of horrors including some more climbing at this late stage. This brought me (and the runners around me) to a walk until we started going downhill again. The last 2/3k I felt quite strong, still passing people. The only problem was a little stone probably picked in the screes had lodged inside my left shoe and had made its way to lodge itself against my big toenail. I wasn’t prepared to stop at this point but each foot plant on my left foot was agony as it was downhill all the way down the ski run to the finish. I finished in 3 hrs 42 mins, about 20 mins down on my 2008 time, but hey I’m 8 years older and nearer to 60 than I would like. I’ll probably have “Ben legs” tomorrow, but overall I’m pleased with the performance.

By the way this is a great place to enjoy the mountains in summer, and is particularly geared up for kids with adventure parks all over. The cable car and public transport system is great. Next year’s race is the 20th edition and they are planning a weekend of races 19th to 22nd July followed by a party on the Saturday night. Check it out at www.dolomiteskyrace.com, or ask me about it if you are interested.

Barriers, Pikes, Lenches and Championships

Well no one is having any time off at the moment.  You have been thumping the tarmac in a range of 5K, 10K and half marathon distances with plenty of PBs and successes. There’s also been the odd fell championship, Lakeland classics, and local midweek races. All this leaves me pondering one small thing; what exactly is a lench?

Rochdale 10K

Michael Hogan was our sole representative at this 10K road race. He finished in 41st place with a time of 41:34. There were 247 runners overall. The route starts and finishes at Rochdale Town Hall and takes the runners around the town centre and out before returning to the start.

Michael Hogan Reports

I was the only Clayton runner to participate in this lovely undulating 10k route. It’s a slow start race on a hilly narrow park path that soon gives way to wide open pavements where the pace can be set. The race was well represented by various north Manchester clubs for a mid week evening race. A cracking little race that should be on on your road race calender for next year.

20 Barriers

The 20 Barriers Race follows a scenic route of just over 5 miles on the field paths, trails and canal towpath in the countryside to the south of Carnforth ‘Gateway to the Lake District’. The race gets its name from the number of stiles and other field boundaries crossed en-route but none of the ‘20 barriers’ should present any unusual hazards or difficulties.

Three club members took part in this race in a record turnout of 209 runners on a clear, sunny evening. Chris Arthur of Bowland Fell Runners won the race in 31:08 and Joanna Goorney of Lytham St Annes took the ladies win for the second year running. Stoodley Pike FR

Report from James Boult

The Stoodley Pike fell race is a quick 5k dash up to the Calderdale landmark of the same name and back, and stands as a typical midweek fell race. Chris Paul, Orlaith O’Mahony and I made the trip over to join Dominic Carr and Darren Rushton as the Clayton representatives. A large, but not too big, field with a strong atmosphere and sunny conditions saw 188 people lining up from the Top Brink Inn in Todmorden before setting off towards the course’s only climb.

James Boult at the Stoodley Pike Fell Race

Warnings beforehand from race regulars said to get to the front or overtake as soon as possible and they were right, as the only opportunity comes along a cobbled path at the climb’s base. Taking a few people there, I managed to get midfield before the most frustrating of climbs turned the race into a single file plod up a gradual, but runnable climb with little overtaking and no chance of getting any momentum or pace.

Orlaith O' Mahoney at the Stoodley Pike Fell Race

Orlaith O’ Mahoney at the Stoodley Pike Fell Race

At the summit the course opens out and I managed to stretch my legs and take some places before reaching Stoodley Pike and the fast, harsh descent. It started well, but after twisting my right ankle, I took it easy and let people go past knowing my strength would come on the mile long flat trail to the finish.

Putting in a six minute final mile, I took back everyone who went past me on the descent and then picked off others in my way (about 15 people in total) as I headed to the finish. I noticed Dominic Carr ahead, I found another gear and pushed on to take first Clayton counter in a 200m final field dash.

The £4 entry fee got you a great 5k race with stunning views and a free beer at the end, to make it unbelievable value for money. Definitely a race to do again and a note for next time; start at the front to avoid a frustratingly slow climb.

Wasdale ‘Horseshoe’ Fell Race

This fell race is a tough, classic Lakeland fell race of 21 miles and 9000ft of ascent organised by the Cumberland Fellrunners Association. This year’s event was beset by gruelling wet and windy conditions making for plenty of comment on the FRA Forum>

Report from Jean Brown

133 runners started the Wasdale Horseshoe race and I think 96 finished. I was there along with Martin Terry, Andy MacFarlane and Paul Wale. It was an interesting race! Very wet and windy, someone compared it with running in a car wash, although I think the wind was stronger than that at times. The cloud was down to the valley and the rock more slippery than I have known it. Most people did more than the advertised mileage/ascent, I certainly did – a PW for me, but really pleased to finish in one piece!

Asda Foundation Leeds 10K

Dave Bagot and Colin Shuttleworth took part in this popular city 10K.

Report from Dave Bagot

I made a midweek decision to run the race, filling in for the work team. Despite trying to pace myself at the start, I really struggled from mile 3 onwards and slipped back through the field to finish 35th in a chip time of 36:29. It was a really well organised race, attracting a field of around 6500 runners. There were lots of spectators and musicians around the course, creating a good atmosphere. The race followed a similar route to the Abbey Dash but included a loop around the city centre at the start. As an added bonus, I was stood near the rugby league legend, Kevin Sinfield, at the start who completed his first 10K in around 44mins, although he did say he was going to take it easy but I was happy to claim the scalp!

Report from Irene Roche

With better than expected weather, there was an excellent turn out for the Hendon Brook HM today. No less than 149 runners in all. John Roche, race organiser, was also more than pleased with the amount of help and support from marshals, cyclists and spectators – drinks and jelly babies offered all round the course. Whilst lots of PBs were achieved for our Clayton runners, it has to be said that all who completed this hilly and undulating course today have excelled themselves (with warm, humid temperatures added to it all!). Well done everyone.

Report from Lynsey Birtwistle

I was a spectator due to injury and I am in awe of everyone who ran! I saw some very pained faces going up lenches. My boys loved running up and down encouraging people and they said on the way home they can’t wait to do that race when they are old enough; an inspiring day all round. Anita jones just amazing! We were willing her to get in under the 3 hours cut off and I got goosebumps when I saw her finish with 17 seconds to spareas her teammates ran her in. Awesome!

Massive thank you to Victoria Wilkinson and Denise Park! Two weeks ago my left calf / Achilles hurt walking, but after a concentrated effort from Vic; Denise working her magic; and me following their expert advice, I was on the start line of the Lavaredo Ultra Trail at 11pm on Friday! That was great, but for my leg to have stood up to the 119 km (5850m ascent) and finish the race 20 hours later was amazing!

Church Stretton FRA Junior Champs & Inter-Counties

Report from Tina Hines Holt

It was a great course at Church Stretton for the last FRA championship race. It was windy, undulation and single track part of the way but at least the weather stayed fine. Briony Holt came in with another girl in a sprint finish but was awarded 2nd place. Briony will end the series in 2nd place overall in the series. Well done to everyone that ran!

Heptonstall Festival Fell Race

After running the fastest leg of the Witton Park Relays, there was no stopping Christopher Holdsworth as he raced to the win at the Heptonstall Festival Fell Race. Dave Motley finished in 11th place with Carl Helliwell and Peter Coates in 13th and 16th. Fellow club members Chris Paul and Richard Briscoe completed the Clayton Contingent in 49th and 60th places respectively. 106 runners took part.

Starting in the hilltop village of Heptonstall, the route plunges deep into a neighbouring valley before finding its way to the top of a nearby peak. It then returns in similar fashion. So that means the runners finish with an almighty uphill struggle. There’s a mix of terrain. Cobbles to start with then some grassy fields, muddy slopes, rocky bridleway and open moorland, some of it pathless. Look up occasionally and there are some great views to be seen. This race is 5.9 miles with 1509ft of ascent.

ISOMAN

Congratulations to Vicky Heys who came 19th overall and second lady in the half Isoman event on Saturday 2nd July. She completed a 3.5 mile swim, a 30.7 mile bike ride and a half marathon to finish with an impressive total time of 5:55:38.

Most triathlon events are biased mainly towards the cycling and to a slightly lesser extent towards the running. Iron distance pros for example will spend only 10% of the total time swimming, 54% of the time cycling and 36% of the time running.

The aim of Isoman is to address this imbalance and create a triathlon for which all disciplines demand an equal level of excellence. To excel at Iron distance triathlon you must be an excellent cyclist/runner. To excel in Isoman you need to be an excellent triathlete!

Oakworth Haul

Stephen Fish was our sole representative at this traditional gala fell race; 5.6 miles and 820ft of ascent.

Report from Stephen Fish

I finished 11th out of only 16 runners, in a time of 51.39. I was the only Clayton member there. Great little route, just a shame the numbers were so low. I would recommend it as a worthwhile trip over to do it, the excellent Oakworth Gala is worth it alone.

Saunders Lakeland Mountain Marathon

The Saunders Lakeland Mountain Marathon (SLMM) is a two-day mountain navigation event open to teams of two. Teams navigate between checkpoints, visiting them in the order given. The first day finishes at a mid-way campsite. Competitors must carry the lightweight camping and safety equipment listed in the rules. Competitors need to be competent in the use of map and compass in the mountains. Many checkpoints require accurate navigation, especially in misty conditions.

Katy Thompson and Kath Wallis finished in 29th place and 1st FV team in the Kirkfell Class team event with a total time of 12:28:10.

Report from Katy Thompson

Kath Wallis and I did the Kirkfell Class in the Saunders. I think it was my 21st Kirkfell, with a variety of partners. Saturday was very wet and windy; but at least the visibility was quite good. The Mountain Rescue were called out to two casualties on the final steep and wet grassy descent, one of whom was helicoptered off the fell with a broken arm. Sunday was much better weather wise and we finished in sunshine, thoroughly exhausted after 7 hours out on Saturday and 5 1/2 hours on Sunday. We were 29th overall in our class and as we were the oldest pair in the class we did quite well in the Vets Handicap, coming 3rd. The older you are the more time is deducted from your overall time.

With classes to cater for every ability the Saunders is an ideal introduction to mountain marathons and it would be good to see more Clayton runners taking part.

Oxenhope Straw Race

Described in the event rules as as strenuous activity that involves alcohol consumption, the race involves the consumption of beer at each of 5 venues on the route. Competitors are required to run approximately 2½ miles – with a bale of straw (20Kg) being carried for 1½ miles up hill.

Two hundred and eleven teams took part this year and with competitive athletes to some more leisurely competitors who took full advantage of the great weather to have a stroll around the village. The fancy dress, which never fails to impress, was amazing and it is great to see everyone staying in character along the whole course.

Report from Adrienne Olszewska

As most of you know, I am no speed queen! I’m much happier joggling along in ridiculously long distance events enjoying the scenery, the adventure and the food. However, I had some new shoes to try out and, due to unforeseen circumstances, find myself a bit time-poor at the moment. With a big race looming I thought the terrain on this race would be ideal testing ground. So I paid my entrance fee and lined up with the fast lads and lasses.

Adrienne in her clodhoppery Hokas at the Trawden 7 Trail Race. Photo by Ste Whip

After a circuit around the recreation ground we headed out along the road and continued through Higher Stunstead, Near Wanless and Far Wanless before dropping steeply down to the road at Hollin Hall. A left here follows the road as it gains height past Lodge Hill and Mean Moss farms to meet the Pendle Way at the foot of Boulsworth Hill. As expected, people passed me as I soldiered on up the hill in my new Hokas. I expected them to be a little on the clodhoppery side and had chosen to ignore the offer of a wig and a red nose to go with them from certain individuals. (There is a school of thought that compares these shoes to clown shoes as they are super cushioned and can look outrageously massive!) However, they are surprisingly light and extremely comfy!

A left turn now followed onto an undulating section until the path descended to a wide concrete bridge. Across this and on to the Pendle Way, then a sharp left onto the Bronte Way and gradual decline through a very scenic stretch by the river into Wycoller. This was where the shoes really came into their own since you barely notice the stony lumps and bumps underfoot. Sadly, they didn’t make me much faster at all but it was certainly quite pleasant underfoot! Having said that, I did have a fun descent and even managed to pass a few people on the way down.

Over the ancient stone bridge in Wycoller then it’s the last mile and a section of road beyond Wycoller and back to the finish. With a bit of headwind I had a bit of a Marcel Marceau feeling of making lots of effort and not really moving forward at all and then before I knew it I was back. Not last!

So in conclusion, the Trawden 7 Trail Race is a great race to do. It’s got a bit of everything; climbing, good trails, a bit of gooey stuff and is a nice distance. I wasn’t keen on the final road section but plenty of other runners really enjoyed that last fast section so it’s no real deal breaker.

Five Clayton-le-Moors Harriers took part in this fell race that goes past the famous Bridestone and takes in some of the lesser used paths in the upper Calder Valley. A short fast race with steep climbs, fast tracks and demon descents, something for everyone.

Sabden Trail Race

There was another whopping turn out for the latest race in this year’s Pendle and Burnley Grand Prix with 56 seniors racing at the Sabden Trail Race.

The race starts with a fast and furious run out along a fairly flat stretch of decent track for a little over a mile before turning off and beginning to climb. After a field crossing and a sharp and twisty climb up another track the runners hit Coal Clough Reservoir.  A nice flat run around the perimeter followed before another climb and a rip roaring descent. Just to add a little sting in the tail, the runners headed back up a steep track to the reservoir and a short and extremely steep scramble up the bank to hit the reservoir path.  All downhill after that, cutting across some fields to hit the flat track and the sprint back to Sabden.

Darren Holloway Memorial Race (Buttermere Horseshoe)

Nicholas Olszewski and Wendy Dodds took part in one of the toughest Lakeland races over the quiet Buttermere fells run in memory of Pennine Fell Runner Darren Holloway, this race is based on the original Buttermere Horseshoe, and is one not to forget in a hurry.

Report from Nicholas Olszewski

Having had an ankle injury for a number of months, which doesn’t seem to want to go away, why not enter one of the toughest fell races in the Lakes! It seemed like a good idea at the time and although I suffered a bit on the way round I with it I wouldn’t have missed this for anything. The route is brutal.  The ascents and descents, steep and relentless throughout the 22 miles and 8,500 ft., although I recorded just short of 10,000 ft. but that was probably due to my creative route choice.

Starting at Loweswater Village Hall we headed on down the road, which seemed a little fast to me, so I held back because the first climb up Whiteside looked pretty steep as it lay dominating the view in front. Having not done much in the Lakes for about twelve months, I have got used to Yorkshire bog trotting rather than these steep climbs so this was going to be hard, but as we ascended past Whiteside, the first dibber and onto Hopegill Head, the second, my legs were starting to acclimatise and I was grateful for the few hill reps up Pendle I’d done recently. The weather was brilliant as were the views and as I headed over the 3rd checkpoint at Grasmoor I felt quite comfortable. From here the route took us over to Whiteless Pike and a very steep descent to the Sail Beck before a short climb to our 4th checkpoint at Newlands Hause.

The next checkpoint, 5th was at Dale Head and this is where my route choice went a little off road so to speak, trying to avoid unwanted climbing, up Robinson and Hindscarth , I decided to navigate my way round by contouring what looked, on the map, to be an easy route choice, how wrong I was! Steep scree almost knee high vegetation; very hard work and I shan’t make that mistake again. Anyway, finally reached Dale Head and again a steep descent down to Honister Pass, checkpoint 6, where we bumped into Joss Naylor and his party of followers participating in his 80th birthday bash.

Climbing out of Honister we were now heading for our 7th checkpoint, Innominate Tarn, by now I could feel the climbing in my legs and myself flagging a bit on the climbs, plus my ankle was now starting to hurt, just a bit, but it’s back was broken and the end was almost, not quite, in sight and having dibbed in at the Tarn I ploughed onto the penultimate checkpoint, High Stile, 8th checkpoint, with yet more climbing and descending, but the views were spectacular across Buttermere and you could see all the peaks we had traversed on the other side.

Leaving High Stile, skirting round Red pike, it was a steep and treacherous descent down to Scale Beck and as we dropped in height, Mellbreak South, our last checkpoint, seemed to be getting bigger and bigger and the thought of that last big climb was turning my legs to jelly, but it was the last one of the day, finally dibbing in at Mellbreak South all that was left very short sharp, scree riddled descent down to Loweswater, again not sure this was the best route off, but you live and learn.

This is a fantastic race, extremely well organised with very friendly people involved, it attracts only a small number of runners, which possibly what makes it as friendly as it is, I shall be returning next year, hopefully with a few more hardy Clayton runners or anyone else who fancies it.

The runners line up in the main street and watch the carnival go by then it’s a fast and furious run to the climb through park, woods and finally to wind gather the top of the run. It started raining here which was a huge relief as it was a warm afternoon. The grand finale was leaping into the River Goyt (worth watching on YouTube for tips), I remembered to leap as far as I could then the finish was another 100 metres. I thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon but was glad to change into dry clothes and I didn’t need to wash my shoes!

1st runner was Chris Doneley of Sale Harriers  in 40.0 and 1st lady was Hayley Ashby also of Sale Harriers in 46.53 (28th).

Arniston Dash

Except of Race Organiser’s Report

The Arnison Dash fell race is held as part of the Ullswater Country Fair. Like many fell races it is a friendly, low key race in a fantastic setting, overlooked by Arnison Crag and Birkhouse Moor.  And as with many fell races, it has its own quirky bits.  This year the biggest problem was how to negotiate getting round the burger van, which was blocking the race route exit from the show field, without leaving studmarks on visitors’ burgers.

Once out of the field, the 34 runners had the fell to themselves. The Arnison Dash combines all that is quintessential about fell running:  lovely grassy slopes; some rocky sections; some steep bits where you get the opportunity to get mud under your finger nails; and a proper precipitous descent.  And conditions were good underfoot as there had been no proper rain in the Lakes for weeks.  And on the day the sun shone until the last runner had finished and then it started to rain.

Thank you to everyone who took part.  This race attracts a lovely mix of fell runners; runners who have never done a fell race before; and runners who support us just about every year.  And as requested, just about everyone finished with a smile on their face.

See you next year!

Donnington Summer Running Festival

Report from Hayley Copeman

Ian Hargreaves and Hayley Copeman at the Donnington Summer Running Festival

Ian Hargreaves and Hayley Copeman at the Donnington Summer Running Festival

We (myself and Ian Hargreaves) were using this event to get miles in, in preparation for the great North run in September.  It was 4 laps of the racing track plus two extra loops at the end of the third and fourth lap.  That meant four runs up a large, steady, unexpected hill. Who knew racing tracks had hills? The sun came out from the start which meant a very hot running event but thankfully there were plenty of water/Lucozade stations and a run through shower.

Despite the heat my comeback from injury went well with lots of encouragement and patience from Ian who, despite having the ability to run much faster, ran with me throughout.  My time was 1:43:00 and Ian was a second faster.

If you’re a runner and an F1 fan this race is for you.  Looking forward to the great North run where there should be more cheering.  There were marshals around the track today but all the spectators were in the stands at the start and finish so not much encouragement.

North West England Triathlon

Helana White went to Salt Ayre for the North West England Triathlon Series – She only has 2 races left in the series. She had (in her words) a horrible swim but carried on regardless to come 7th on the count (results / times not published yet). This may mean she slips from 3rd to 4th in the overall ranking depending on the points awarded on the time difference, as the top 4 are pretty close in points leaving all to play for in her last race in two weeks time in Blackpool.

Go for it Helana!

It’s a proper Summer Sizzler!

As we approach the Summer Solstice and the country wrestles with whether it should be in or out, as per usual the Clayton athletes have very definitely been out, and about, racing on the fells, roads, trails, in ultras and in sizzling form. There have been plenty of individual and age group wins along the way, but also some great performances behind the winners from our hard working Juniors and Seniors alike, showing dedication, persistence and grit in improving their own performances.

Round 2 of the club’s Summer Series on Tuesday evenings for CLEM and Trawden athletes, this trail race took in the Gorple Track and Pennine Bridleway from Worsthorne, giving around 5 miles of fast running but with nearly 1000ft of climb to hurt the legs. The Juniors ran a shortened version but still started with the Seniors up the track leading to some good battles from the get-go. Chris Holdsworth ran a blistering race to break his own Senior course record by over a minute (35:01) and there were some good hard battles further down the field too.

Aggie’s Staircase Fell Race

Run over Darwen Hill and round the Jubilee Tower, Aggie’s Staircase is a sharp 4 mile fell race with 1150ft climb.

Sarah Helliwell reports:

I did Aggie’s Staircase on Thursday. First time I have ever done it and it is definitely one I will do again. A cracking up, down, up, down, up and finally down again race. 350m of climbing in 4 miles. There were a small number of Harriers who did the event. Peter Coates was the first Claytoneer in 13th place and Alison Dugdale was first Clayton lady. There was a good atmosphere, it was well marshalled and plenty of support around the course. It’s the first race I have done in a long time where I felt things were slowly clicking back into place with my running. Thank you to Katy & George Thompson who organize it. A race I recommend.

Barrowford Grand Prix 5k

Flat running and fast times were the order of the day at this round of the Burnley and Pendle Grand Prix. Despite the rain that affected the later races, there were PBs galore across the age groups and Clayton wins with Paul Brannon (C Race), Finlay Stubbs (U10B), Dexta Thompson (U12B), Ella Dorrington (U12G) and Millie Stubbs the overall U14 race.

For one of the Junior coaching team, Marion Wilkinson, it was also an important race:

The Barrowford 5k was my first race after seven months of very little running following an operation on my eye to release the pressure which was causing loss of vision. There was definitely a feeling of pressure (albeit a different kind) as I signed up to this race along with my daughter Lisa and granddaughter Emily and all the wonderful Clayton juniors.

My fears were the same as many of the juniors face every time they race – I didn’t want to come last! I even told podium Chris that he may have to delay the start of the B race to give me time to finish.

My granddaughter always tells her granddad that she came last  – this time she didn’t and neither did I. So, to all the juniors who are making great progress but never quite get to the front in a race, keep trying, enjoy your running and never give up.

What’s next for me – well, I will be 75 in November and if I can knock two minutes off my 5k time I will be first in the UK rankings. Hopefully this will encourage all the juniors –  you have lots of years ahead of you to realise your dreams.

Special thanks for the encouragement on my last lap (although at the time I thought I had another lap to do) from Reece Lawrence and young Toby Birtwistle.

Muckle Toon Adventure Festival (MTAF)

Dave Motley reports:

This weekend a few of us decided to travel across the border to Scotland to go to MTAF 2016 on recommendation from Team Perry. This is a low key outdoors festival with something for everybody from activities for the kids to road and MTB cycling events and a variety of trail running events from 5k to half marathon. On Saturday the lads took part in the MTAF Half which was a really tough, hilly 13mile route around the village of Langholm with pipers playing as you run through the village, a fantastic event with a little of everything. Mr Perry was first home in 2nd place, myself in 5th and Russell Clarke finishing in 25th. At the same time as the boys were running it was Mrs Perry turn to run, completing the tough 10k trail race in 59:57 (7th female). On the Sunday it was Mrs Motleys turn to do her thing on the 5k trail race, finishing the race in the mid 26mins. If anybody wants an event for the whole family this is the one for you, a definite recommendation for 2017.

Helm Hill BOFRA races

The BOFRA camp moved to Cumbria for this round of the series, held on Helm Hill just outside Kendal. The summer days of the previous few rounds were replaced by overcast skies and then pouring rain, but that didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the Thompson family, at their 4th race of the weekend. Dexta came in 4th in the U12B whilst Felix, Kady and Liberty all ran well in their age categories. Ella Dorrington led the U12G at the top of the final descent but was overtaken on the fast run to the finish ending up 2nd.

Carl Helliwell reports:

Settle Hills is a 7 mile fell race that takes in the hills behind the back of Settle and has over 500m of climbing. It starts right in the middle of Settle from the town square with a good uphill start up Constructional Hill and then up the side of Castlebergh onto the fells.
It was a fast start as some of the front runners went for it straight away, I started steady as I could feel my legs still from Friday nights Podium 5k. My legs soon got into it and started catching a few people as it got more rugged. The race has everything grass, rocks, track and plenty of up and down. Thankfully it is one of the few races with a very small section of road, right at the start and end!
The toughest bit of the race was the long decent off High Hill and then back down the track and through the fields to Settle. My legs started to feel tired and aced from Fridays 5k as I was passed by a couple of runners and couldn’t respond. (I’ve decided my legs don’t like flat fast road running!!) I was glad to see the rugby club as I made my way across the pitch to the finish line and was greeted by Eva offering me some of her birthday chocolate cookie and fizzy water (we know how to spoil our children!)
I was happy with my 13th place and time of 58.16 and even won a running arm band in the raffle! It was then my turn to take the kids off Sarah so she could ride home.

Upwards and onwards

It’s been yet another action packed week for Clayton-le-Moors Harriers with road races, fell races, uphill races, half marathons, marathons, endurance ultra marathons, LEJOG (Lands End to John O’Groats) and Ironman. You have been an exceedingly busy bunch this week upwards and onwards (and onwards, and onwards!). I think I might need to go and have a lie down now….

Monday 6 June

Cork Marathon

Report from Orlaith O’Mahony

The sun was filtering through my window at 6.45am on Monday the 6th of June. Finally, 6 months of training was about to be tested by Cork City Marathon. I am from Cork originally so my overnight accommodation was provided by my parents’ house which included being reunited with my childhood teddy bear and porridge prepared by mum. The nerves were mounting as I attempted to eat my breakfast knowing that in a few hours it would all be over. Cork City Marathon is run on the June Bank Holiday weekend every year and is something I have watched many times while questioning why anyone would want to do something so ridiculous.

Orlaith O'Mahony at the Cork marathon

Orlaith O’Mahony at the Cork marathon

The race starts on St. Patricks Street, the main street of Cork City so at 9am I set off along with the 1400 full marathon participants and a few hundred relay teams. The relay team start with us at St.Patricks street and change over every 5 or 6 miles along the route, I decided a few months ago to take full advantage of this set up and roped in a few unsuspecting friends to run with me. My friend Kieran ran with me for the first 10.5miles and his pacing was superb, I didn’t care about time but he set me up comfortably between the lovely men carrying balloons marked 3hrs 45 and 4hrs. We ran on closed roads through the city and along the river until the first relay hand over point and then ran to the Jack Lynch tunnel which runs under the River Lee. This is closed especially for the marathon as it does not usually allow pedestrian traffic and I felt like I was in an action movie running through it! My niece and sister were awaiting me at the end of the tunnel with large homemade posters which cheered me up no end after running along a motorway for 3 miles. A bagpiper was the next spectator of note and while a man holding a sign stating ” Run as if you are late for Mass” reminded me I wasn’t running in Burnley! Kieran handed me over to our friend Pa at the 10.5mile mark at the 2nd relay point which was situated below the beautiful Blackrock castle, we then ran along a track beside the river until the half marathon mark where we turned back towards the city along a disused railway track. This was a hard section for many as there were a lot of trees and very few spectators but we were rewarded at the end when we reached the Marina where volunteers gave us wet sponges to help cool us down. All that winter training did not take into account that the marathon would be run on a very hot day in June!!

Orlaith O'Mahony at the Cork Marathon

Orlaith O’Mahony at the Cork Marathon

I met my friend Sarah at the 16mile mark where she kept telling me I looked so fresh…I did not feel it at this point but perhaps the sponge had refreshed my complexion? We ran through the tree lined suburbs of the city where there were numerous families cheering us on. Local residents were cutting up oranges on tables at the end of their driveway, nothing beats an orange segment at mile 17 of a very warm marathon. I passed my mother who was a steward at mile 19 and at mile 20 my father decided to join me on his bike, further family and friends cheered me on along the next few miles which started to come quite close to my childhood home in Bishopstown. At mile 21 Sarah handed over the relay team baton and a very tired Orlaith to Dave. Dave channelled John Roche over the final five miles as we realised I might hit the sub 4 mark. I was told to have a word and use the hills. Mile 23 is a hard mile in any Marathon but in Cork it is the dreaded Straight Road a long, flat and at this point sore section of the run where you feel like you are not moving. When I reached the end of this dreaded section Sarah and Pa re-joined me. I must have been the only marathon runner with three team mates and a father on a bicycle taking me through the final section. Dave helped me weave in and out of the crowds coming up to the finish line as we could hear the crowd in the distance. I feel this is where winter training with JR really kicked in, I barely knew where I was or what I was doing but every time Dave told me to overtake I sped up and was eventually rewarded with the wonderful finish line on Patricks Street.

In summary Cork Marathon is a relatively flat and fast marathon which has the whole city behind it and the spectators are typically full of the Irish charm. I would highly recommend it to anyone attempting a first marathon

Orlaith finished in 421st place with a time of 3:56:05. She was 46th female.

Mizuno Endure 24

Report from Jane Hylands

Endure 24 aka Glastonbury for runners, is a running festival held in Wasing Park near Aldermaston. Runners complete a 5 mile forest trail circuit through the forest as many times as they can between 12pm Saturday and 12pm Sunday either as solos, pairs or in a team of up to 8. Only one team member can be on the course at any time.

This is an amazingly friendly festival with weekend camping included on the entry fee and some fantastic quirks like a bar in the woods serving shot blocks, a disco campervan with energy cocktails and hippies pumping tunes to power you up heartbreak hill. It was my third time with friends at this event but my first time as a solo runner. I managed to complete 10 laps totalling 50 miles and had the most amazing support all the way round. Even met endure celebrity Pete who is 86 years young and did 40 miles!!! Jane HylandsHe has free entry for life he’s such a legend. Winning solo managed an astounding 135 miles breaking the course record.

It would be great to have a Clayton team next year…

Pedol Cwn Pennant Race

Report from Peter Browning

Saturday saw the second round of this year’s British Fell Running Championship, with the Pedol Cwm Pennant race in Snowdonia. This relatively new race covers around 17 miles, with about 6000 feet of climbing and was a first time visit for the vast majority of the 232 finishers and all of the five Clayton runners that travelled down. The glorious sunny days of recent weeks were replaced on the day by low cloud and high humidity, and although the sun only came out right at the end of the race, it remained warm throughout.

The race itself featured a long run out to the first summit checkpoint on Moel Hebog (it took me 58 minutes), and due to the low cloud we never really saw the hill other than the twenty or so yards of ground directly in front. The pre-race publicity spoke of beautiful ridge running and stunning views, but it all remained hidden from us as we moved through the low cloud, always anxious not to lose contact with the runner in front. Underfoot, there was a good mix of grass, bog, rock and old slate quarry workings. On the tops, the checkpoint marshals blew their whistles to guide the runners in as the low cloud persisted. Following the final summit check point, we had to negotiate a long, long descent through knee deep heather with plenty of hidden rocks and holes to trap the tiring runner, followed by gorse and bog. The final blow once the valley bottom had been reached was a weary three miles of undulating road running to the finish as the sun eventually came out, and I for one have seldom been more tired and more relieved to complete a fell race.

Race winners Carl Bell (Keswick) and Louise Roberts (Ambleside) took a scarcely credible 24 and 20 minutes respectively off the course records, and all five Clayton runners finished.

Weets Fell Race

Another great turnout of Clayton Harriers at the latest in the popular Pendle and Burnley Grand Prix Series in this tough local fell race around Weets Hill. The race is organised by Barlick Fell Runners and it’s no surprise to see a great set of results for them. Our first finisher was Carl Helliwell who was 10th with a time of 42:41 and 1st V40. Jordan McDonald was 1st MU18 and 15th overall. Sean Clare was 1st M50 in 29th place overall and Barry Mitchell was 1st M70 in 85th place.

Irene Roche was the first Clayton lady finisher. Linda Bostock was 1st W60. This was another great turnout for our ladies with the biggest female turnout of all the clubs involved in the race.

 Weets Junior Races

We had a good number of juniors in the Weets junior races despite the clash with other events at the weekend. The junior races took place on a steep field just a short way down from the senior race with each age group adding extra distance. It was a tough and steep climb at the beginning, with a level stretch contouring around the hill before a steep and tussocky descent back to the start. All age groups tackled the same tough climb at the beginning

U8

In the U8s race Toby Birtwistle had an excellent run and was battling to a close finish with Barlick’s George Fitzpatrick. Unfortunately, he fell a couple of times on the final stretch and had to settle for 3rd place.  Running for the first time in a fell race, Elissia Smedley got stuck in and held her own against the Barlick runners finishing in 9th place and 3rd girl. Emily Johnson, also a fell newbie, threw herself in to this fell race and showed great grit and determination as she tackled the steep climb at the beginning of the race.

Robbie Smedley showed great promise as he gamely took on this tough course giving Barlick’s Elliott Phillips a good battle along the way. He finished in 2nd place. Ella Dorrington looked as calm as ever as she finished in 3rd place and 1st girl. Charlie Birtwistle finished in 5th place putting in a solid performance and Bronia Olszewska finished in 14th place.

 Hawkswick Dash

Report by Alan Dorrington

Hot on the heels of last weekend’s Kettlewell race, the BOFRA series relocated over the other side of the hill in Hawkswick for Round 4 of the Championship Series. Another warm day and another short but hard course awaited the juniors, with the promise of a dip in the river afterwards to cool off.

Josh Mckay and Felix Thompson had a good battle in the U9 race, coming in very close in 13th and 14th.  In the U12 race Dexta Thompson worked hard on the steep climb onto the fellside to put himself clear in 2nd where he stayed till the finish.

Jenson Bentham came 7th not far ahead of a charging Ella Dorrington (9th overall) who had gone clear from her rivals in the Girls race on the long wide runnable climb to take her first BOFRA win. Kady Thompson ran hard into the finish for 40th place overall.

Jackson McKay was chasing really hard from the turn, using his rapid descending skills to claim 5th place in the U14 race whilst Millie Stubbs found the going tough and persevered doggedly to 6th Girl and 20th overall.

Briony Holt had been finished as 1st Girl for well over 5 minutes before 2nd place arrived at the finish, such was the speed of her run which also netted her 4th overall in the U17 race.

Ironman 70.3 Staffordshire

Report from Jon Cleaver

It was a 0530 wake up call to get porridge and bananas down me before going to Cannock Chase for the Swim leg. Quick check of the bike and load it up with Hydration and Nutrition. No dramas…

Jon Cleaver at the Staffordshire Ironman.

Jon Cleaver at the Staffordshire Ironman.

First came the swim,  and for whatever reason I had a meltdown, I could not get any form together on my front crawl so I took my time, gathered myself and started to do what I’ve done in the pool for the last 2 months total time 42 mins.

Next came the bike a 56 mile course in the rolling Staffordshire countryside. About 38 miles in the rain came and soaked us for the entire bike leg. I saw a few hairy accidents on the greasy surface so I plugged away taking no unnecessary risks as I knew my strongest leg was yet to come. The only drama was a climb 6 miles from the finish taking us up a few hundred metres of elevation – time 03:09.

Finally the run, which was a mixture of Tarmac, mud and trail, 3 loops round the Shughborough estate each lap had a climb of 100 metres. I took a lot of places back on the half marathon and ended up finishing in 01:33. The total elapsed time was 05:37. Which I was really pleased with. Iron Man organise these things like clockwork, no waiting around for anything and it was a thoroughly challenging and enjoyable time. Maybe I will do the full next year!

Swim: 42:25, Bike 03:11:38, run 01:33:24. Total 05:40:02. Overall ranking 515.
