Danger UXB

While running in Stainscomb recently (near Stan’s hut), Richard Bellaries came across a shell (i.e. bomb)! When he later led the police back to the spot, they confirmed that it was still live!!

So…. BEWARE. All the western end of Pendle was used as a live firing range in the past. Occasionally unexploded shells emerge from the peat – especially after periods of prolonged rain. If you see anything that looks like a bomb – it probably is. Follow Rich’s example: do not disturb and report it to the constabulary.

Christmas Social Runs

Those fortunate not to be working on Christmas Eve can start the celebrations with the traditional Clayton Christmas Eve Run on Pendle from Barley at 11am. Meet at Barley Car Park for a steady and sociable run of around one and a half hours led by Steve Whittaker.  Andy Armstrong will be there with our Juniors, so don’t forget your Santa hats! Post run refreshments in the Pendle Inn (a pint or two!) or the Barley Cabin.

And just after Christmas, there’s Mick Green’s Christmas Run at 1pm on Saturday 28th December from Memorial Park, Great Harwood.  Meet at the bottom corner of the park for an off-road run of around two hours at a very steady pace. Post run refreshments (food and drink) at the Pub Royal. Please contact Mick Green on 01254 231650 or 07455 990989 if you plan to attend so he can let the pub know how many to cater for.

All our members are very welcome at both these steady and sociable runs.

Happy Christmas everyone!

Cannonball 5k Midweek Winter Series (1/4)

The Cannonball Events Todmorden 5k race series started with a bang on Wednesday with 48 headtorch-wearing runners lining up to do battle. 11 athletes were there representing Clayton Harriers from both the senior and junior sections.

The race was started at 7pm sharp by series organiser John Lloyd. Claytons wheelchair athlete Anthony Gotts swiftly disappeared into the darkness with Captain Tom Brewster and Chris Holdsworth heading the runners into lap 1.
Cannonball
Todmorden Harriers Jon Wright gained a healthy lead on lap 3 and a battle between the two leading Clayton Harriers began with positions changing regularly until the fight was decided in the last 200 meters and a sprint to the line for 2nd and 3rd being taken by Tom and Chris respectively – Nick Gaskell hunting the leaders down with a strong final lap to take 4th and securing the mens team prize.

An excellent race was had by Clayton Junior Kenan Eti completing the race in 7th place just ahead of Kevin Davies (alias Nick Faldo, Mahogany Man, Morroccan Sunset……) in 8th resulting in Clayton securing 6 of the top 10 places, Kieron Mitchell coming home in 18th rounding up the senior team.

Clayton Juniors George Pier, Thomas Bradley, Alice Pier and Daniel Bradley all had an excellent outing showing that their efforts in training are paying off.
An excellent start to the series by Team Clayton!
