Navigation Workshop 23rd July – update

Are you new to fell running and unsure how to use a map and compass?
Do you usually simply ‘follow the guy in front’ at a race, hoping he knows where he’s going?
Have you ever wondered where you are on the hill?
Do you fear the mist and wonder how to find your way?
Do you worry about getting lost on the hill?
Would you like to increase your confidence in navigating your way round a fell race?

If you can answer ‘YES’ to ANY of these questions then this workshop is for YOU!

The club is holding a Navigation Workshop to help you increase your confidence on the hill. You will learn how to read a map, use a compass and gain new navigational skills and strategies to give yourself the edge over your competitors.

Clayton members Colin Woolford and Mark Nutter will be your tutors for the day. Between them they have over 40 years racing experience over the fells in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, competing in many ‘AL’ races, Mountain Marathons, Adventure Races and Orienteering events where navigational skills are essential. They will be sharing their knowledge with you, to give you the edge on your next race!

As part of the Workshop there will be a NAVIGATION THEMED RACE / EVENT using Sportident equipment to test your newly learnt skills!

The workshop is FREE and open to all members of Clayton-le-Moors Harriers over the age of 18.  Places are limited to 20.

Could you be the next Junior Coach?

12801573_1001589533250738_8129408106827825656_nClayton’s junior section has expanded rapidly over the last few years and we are now at the point where we really need to add to the coaching team. We’d like to recruit at least one, preferably two new volunteers to go through the coaching programme and to lead training groups on a regular basis. You’d be helping an experienced coach at first and we’d ultimately expect you to take sole responsibility in leading a group, with the help of our volunteer assistants.

Coaching juniors is very rewarding, it’s always great fun and the perfect antidote to a stressful days work. They’re always keen to run (sometimes too keen!) and they work hard when well motivated.

Please check out the FAQ below, if you’ve got any more queries then get in touch either via the junior email or here on Facebook.

FAQ

  • What qualifications do I need to have?
    • Absolutely none! The club will pay for you to attain the Leader in Running Fitness course (a one day, non-exam course) and will arrange for First Aid certification if needed. Any further training needed will be provided by the existing coaching staff, ‘on the job’.
  • What kind of commitment do I need to give?
    • We have two training sessions; Thursday evenings in Burnley runs all year round and Tuesday evenings on the fell which runs April-September. Both sessions are usually suspended during the summer holidays. We’d like a prospective coach to able to cover at least one of these sessions on a weekly basis. We don’t expect you to be able to attend every single week (we all need our holidays) but having a regular, ongoing commitment is essential.
  • What’s involved, do we just go for a run, or is it more complicated than that?
    • It’s very variable, depending on the terrain, time of year, which races have been on or are coming up. Fell training is usually in the form of a continuous endurance run, within which there will looping back, route choices etc. Thursday training has continuous runs but we also do more structured interval sessions such as hill reps and speed work on the parks.
  • Seems like it might be fun but what if I get bored and want to stop doing it?
    • The training courses run infrequently so there’d be opportunity to come along and assist for a couple of months first to see if you really want to make the commitment. You’d be in a group with a qualified coach and you can have a go at organising bits of the session, to gain confidence.
  • Aren’t they really fast, what if I can’t keep up?
    • This is only an issue with the continuous runs and it’s all about how you manage the runners. We have several groups and abilities range from national age group champions to those just starting out. Making the faster athletes loop back is a key skill to develop, we don’t tolerate standing and waiting at the top of hills!
  • Aren’t they really slow, isn’t it a bit boring?
    • See above!

Tony Aspin

Born on the 15th April 1939. Died on the 30th January 2016, age 76.

Tony AspinTony (Anthony) was born and bred in Accrington. On leaving school he became a Television Engineer and played local football for many years. Later in life Tony worked for Royal Mail and after ‘retirement’ became the ‘caretaker’ at Aldi in Accrington until 70 years of age. Tony had 51 years married to wife Eileen and they had three children and a number of grandchildren, all of whom played a big part in their lives.

When the ‘running boom’ took off, originally in the USA, and then transferred to the UK in the late 70’s and early 80’s Tony joined Clayton-le-Moors Harriers (15th October 1981) and did many road races including marathons. He then discovered a love of the fells and he did many fell races around the North West. Tony played a big part in the ‘Saturday Group’ which runs from different local venues each week. Around 10 years (or more) ago Tony began to develop knee problems and asked if we could keep the ‘Saturday run’ to two hours rather the anything up to three hours and maybe more on some occasions. He later found running too much of an ordeal and set up a Saturday Cycling Group.

Tony was diagnosed with cancer around three years ago but maintained a positive outlook and continued to socialise with club friends. He passed away peacefully at home with his family.

The funeral will be held on Tuesday 9th February at St Anne’s Church in Accrington at 11 am followed by a service at the Accrington Cemetery at 12.20 pm and social event at the Globe Bowling Club, Fern Gore, Accrington.

Senior Club Competitions 2016

Now 2016 is here why not look at the Club Championships when planning your races? The first Club Road Championship race is the East Lancs Hospice 10k on Sunday 24th January, the first Club Trail Championship race is the Standish Hall 10k on Saturday 20th February, and the first Club Fell Championship race is Heptonstall (BL) on Sunday 20th March. These three club championships all follow a best four out of seven races format.

The Winter Warmer 10k on Sunday 7th February is the final race in the 2015 Club Road Championship to replace the cancelled Guys 10.

Winning ways, and Borrowdale.

‘I just caught a glimpse of Richard Briscoe heading off towards the Scree descent – I knew at that point that I’d catch him quite soon… Dave Bagot managed to go out for a training run the following morning – oh to be young again, I’ll be walking like John Wayne for the next few days.’ Andy Firth on the 17 mile Borrowdale Fell Race

Lee Mill Fell Race – Wednesday 29th July

Darren Rushton reports: Wednesday evening I head off over the hill into the valley of death as the lone ranger into Rossendale Valley to the Lee Mills fell race. I was not expecting what lay ahead of me. A short steep lung bursting start if ever I saw one, onto the tops of Lee quarry with a massive ray of sunshine beaming over the Rossendale Valley, some cracking views. Then swing left over a nice boggy power sapping Brandwood Moor onto Walstead clough. A nice little climb out, zig zag back to the top of the quarry, and then a nice run in to finish. Afterwards when saw the results I realised that there were two lone rangers from Clayton. What a tough race.

Borrowdale Fell Race – Saturday 1st August

Andy Firth and Stephen Fish at the Ambleside Sports Guides Race

Andy Firth and Stephen Fish at the Ambleside Sports Guides Race

Newly retired Andy Firth warmed up at the Ambleside Sports Guides Race on the Thursday before tackling Borrowdale two days later.

Andy reports: The Borrowdale fell race covers 17 miles of rough fell with approx 6500 ft of climbing. The race is organised by Borrowdale’s “Scoffer” who manages to enlist fell running legends to help – Gavin Bland on registration and timing at the finish, Jonny Bland on car parking with Nicola Davies, Billy Bland as a marshall at the fell gate.

Clayton-le-Moors had 6 members taking on this massive challenge – Dave Bagot, Ivan Whigham, Andy McFarlane, Wendy Dodds, myself and Richard Briscoe. Having camped over at Braithwaite the night before there was plenty of pre race banter in the pub, but it was clear that the two Borrowdale virgins Dave Bagot and Richard Briscoe were a little apprehensive before a race with a reputation for being very tough. Mark Nutter had an entry and despite having travelled up to join in the camping fun he decided that his dodgy knee would not survive the course and he instead did a bit of a training run  in charge of taking photos. I’m sure the real reason was that he was worried that I might beat him!

Heavy overnight rain made sure that the course was well watered, but the weather on the day was perfect for running – sunshine but with a cool breeze on the tops which thankfully were clear of any mist – so little chance of anybody going walkabout.

The start requires a fast sprint to get the a bottleneck 200 yards into the race where nearly 300 runners have to squeeze into a small path which takes 2 runners abreast. Scoffer set us off and I managed to get to the bottleneck ahead of all the other Clayton runners apart from Dave Bagot who was off to a flyer. Ivan and Andy McFarlane quickly passed me on the fast run out to the fell, whilst once on the fell Wendy Dodds and Richard Briscoe also climbed well and both disappeared into the distance. I was pretty sure I’d see Richard again, but that was the last I saw of all the other Clayton members until the finish.

Ivan Whigham at Borrowdale

Ivan Whigham at Borrowdale

I seemed to struggle with the initial climb, was generally slowly being passed by the field but once at the top of Bessyboot I slowly started to reel in runners in front. From Esk Hause the race gets onto the rougher ground, and whilst not speeding up particularly I just seemed to traverse the boulder field and descents better than runners around me and felt like I was gaining ground. As I approached the top of the highest point Scafell Pike I just caught a glimpse of Richard Briscoe heading off towards the Scree descent – I knew at that point that I’d catch him quite soon and so it proved as I skipped across the rough rocky corridor route mainly on the grassy line I’d reccyed a couple of weeks ago whilst walking with my daughter and her boyfriend. I thought that I’d seen the last of Richard, but on the tough climb up Great Gable he came back strongly and regained several places beating me to the top by a couple of minutes.

The descent off Gable is rough and I made the most of it quickly catching and passing Richard – on the route over Brandreth to Honister I felt like the elastic had finally snapped and I had shaken him off my tail. I had however reckoned without the agony that is the climb of Dalehead – all my energy had been drained and the climb felt like wading through treacle. You don’t see the top till you are well up the climb, but it is one of those hills where you think the top is just over the next rise – until you get there and find you still can’t see the top. About half way up I saw Richard behind me again gaining time on me  – could I hold on till the top which I still couldn’t see. In the end as I dibbed the sportident timer at the summit Richard was less that 50 yrds behind, but I was confident that my descending would keep me in front of him.

Andy Firth at Borrowdale

Andy Firth at Borrowdale

My legs were really complaining on the initial descent to Dale Head tarn – I had a good line and stayed mainly on grass, but the boggy section to the top of the quarry was energy sapping reducing me to a walk several times. Mark Nutter was waiting here to take photos and provide encouragement and finally I was over the stile and off down the left of the beck on my grassy line I’ve been using for the last few years. This descent felt great and Mark couldn’t keep up as I let gravity do its stuff – across the beck after 200 yards picking up the trod that other runners had used bypassing the rough stuff in the top of the quarry. The descent was soon over leaving the agonising flat run back to the finish, across the fields to the bridge over the river and the lane. My legs didn’t want to run any more, and motivation was low until Mark Nutter finally caught up and started bullying me to keep running to get in within 5 hours. It was agony but I just managed to finish with a few seconds to spare.

This is the 19th time I’ve completed this classic race since my first attempt in 1988, but I now have to accept that age has caught up with me finishing over an hour down on my fastest time from 2000 (3.54.07). Richard hobbled in just over 7mins later – his descending isn’t quite the same quality as his climbing, but he can be justifiably proud of taming the beast of a race on his first attempt. First Clayton back was the youngster Dave Bagot in a time of 3.52.37. Afterwards Dave admitted that the rough ground was a bit of an eye opener for him since most of his other Lakes races have had better paths/trails to follow – that said he is already talking about how to improve his time next year. Dave also managed to go out for a training run the following morning – oh to be young again, I’ll be walking like John Wayne for the next few days.

Clayton results:
Dave Bagot 71st   3.52.37
Andy MacFarlane 113th 4.14.10
Ivan Whigham 141st  4.32.45
Wendy Dodds 163rd  4.39.55

Hendon Brook and Lingmell Dash!

‘Not every day you can say you’ve run the country’s hardest half marathon….!!! Feeling so so sore but so so proud!!!’ Clare Wilson

The march continues. Another busy week for Team Clayton, so read on!

Hendon Brook Half Marathon – Sunday 26th July

An amazing 61 members completed the 30th running of this so tough Half Marathon. A tremendous 4th place for Christopher Holdsworth, 2nd lady for Laura Hesketh, as well as the Ladies Vet 55 category win for Irene Roche who broke a record that was set in 2007.

To complete this race is an achievement in itself!

‘So proud to have completed the Hendon Brook race today, arguably the toughest road half marathon in the UK, and I will wear the t-shirt with pride. Lenches really was a a bit nasty. Thanks to all the marshals, without which we wouldn’t have a race, all the supporters along the way, but most of all fellow runners, who support and encourage each other up and down the hills to make it a thoroughly enjoyable event. This is what running is all about. Can’t wait for next year….’ Andy Quinn

‘For my first Half Marathon I decided I would pick something special. And boy it was. Some serious hills. My kind of race. Went out steady. Just wanted to do the 13.5. Even the down hill beasts your legs. Big thanks to Big Mac and Dave Burnett for the support. Thank you John Roche for a great race.’ Brian Searby

Lingmell Dash – Saturday 25th July

Peter Browning was one of six members who travelled to the Lakes for the third counter in the British Fell Championship, and fifth counter in the English.

Dave Bagot at the Lingmell Dash

Dave Bagot at the Lingmell Dash

Peter reports: ‘Fell running at its simplest. Wasdale Head Inn to the top of Lingmell and back. Four and a half miles with 2500 feet of climbing. A bit like a BOFRA race on mega-steroids.

Separate male and female races. Six Harriers present, three girls and three boys. No race results published yet. Serial award winners Wendy Dodds, Linda Lord and Katy Thompson for the girls. Perennial tryers Dave Bagot, Peter Browning and champion Kieran Carr for the boys.

Stunning views at the summit but no time to enjoy them. Kieran (DNF) last seen on his way to the knacker’s yard with a torn hamstring. Peter would have done better if his shoe hadn’t fallen apart on the descent. Thirteen and a half stone hurtling downhill proved too much for Inov-8. Dave improving all the time. Happy days!’

Linda Lord, Wendy Dodds and Katy Thompson

Linda Lord, Wendy Dodds and Katy Thompson

Katy Thompson adds: ‘After the first dash across the fields and over the stream, it was more of a Lingmell Plod to the summit. Linda Lord gradually pulled away from me and I arrived at the summit in 50 minutes – about the same time as first lady Vic Wilkinson arrived at the finish. After the run back down to the stile on Lingmell Nose there was a choice of routes down the very steep grass to the path. Wendy took full advantage of this to sneak past the two LV60s who had beaten her to the top, giving her her first V60 win in this year’s English Champs. Unfortunately there is not yet a LV60 category in the British Champs. Linda was 2nd LV65 and after managing to pass one person on the way down I finished in 75 minutes, 6th LV60.

After the severe descent, my quads are so sore I can hardly walk, so I am very impressed to see that Dave Bagot managed to run the Hendon Brook the day after! Well done, Dave.’

Lakeland 100

Nick Olszewski had a fantastic run and smashed his 30 hour target by almost an hour! Here’s Nick’s report:

‘Having completed the 50 mile route of the Ultra Tour of the Lake District last year, I felt the need to do the big one this this year, 105 miles with 22,500ft of climbing. Starting from Coniston at 18:00hrs on Friday you have 40 hours to complete the gruelling route and as I was climbing out of Coniston towards Walna Scar Road I did wonder what lay ahead as this would be the furthest I had ever run in one go.

By the time I’d reached Wasdale Head, 4.00hrs into the event I felt good, before leaving Coniston I spotted and spoken to Andy Armstrong who was also up for the weekend doing a spot of wild camping and had mentioned that he was camping up Black Sail. As I left Wasdale and began climbing Black Sail with a snaking line of head torches behind me I could hear the ringing of a cowbell in the distance. As I progressed up the pass the ringing became louder until I finally came across Andy sat on the mountainside cheering on the runners, great to see a familiar face.

Nick Olszewski at the Dalemain checkpoint

Nick Olszewski at the Dalemain checkpoint

The run was going well, I had a schedule and I was managing to run to it with half an hour to spare which was great. I ticked off checkpoints until I arrived at Dalemain, this is the start of the 50 race and just over half way for me, still feeling remarkably fresh, I had a complete change of gear and new shoes here, looked after by Adrienne who was marshalling on this checkpoint. And after a quick snack of soup I was on my way again for the last 45 miles.

By now I had developed a nice steady walk the up hills and trot the rest pattern which was conserving my ever depleting energy supply. Before too long I found myself climbing Fusedale heading towards Mardale Head and with just two major climbs left, Gatescarth and Garburn , I started to feel excited about completing.

Everything was still going to plan and by the time I reached Tilberthwaite, the final checkpoint, I was still up on my predicted finish time, spurring on over Crook Beck heading towards Coniston and the last drop off, which isn’t the easiest descent especially after covering 104 miles. I hit that road and shot off as fast as I could back down to Coniston. Waiting along the road were Andy and Adrienne, cheering me on, but the next thing I knew was Adrienne spreadeagled in the middle of the road shouting “I’m ok, just go” with fits of laughter coming from Andy, all that was going through my head was that I was on a roll, so close to the end and I sorry I cant stop, very surreal.

Throughout the whole event, mentally, I felt great and managed to complete without any blisters, just a damaged large toe from booting a rock. Would I do it again, that would be a big fat yes and I wouldn’t change a thing, apart from Adrienne face planting the road. I would also like to thank Andy for his support up Black Sail and Ambleside and also for picking up and dusting off Adrienne.’ Results to follow.

Cross Country News

Cross Country will soon be here! The committee has appointed Jason Pier as Cross Country Manager and Cross Country Statistician. As Cross Country Manager, Jason will be registering our Junior and Senior members with the Red Rose and Mid Lancs Leagues before the season commences, and will be issuing numbers on race day. Thanks Jason for taking on these two important roles!

The storm!

As always achievements galore this weekend! The cold, rain and snow on Saturday didn’t deter our members from a massive turnout on a busy weekend.

Three Peaks Fell Race

Our first placed finisher, Christopher Holdsworth, in 37th reported on his debut at the Three Peaks:

‘It’s not quite easy to put the 3 Peaks experience into words, which is possibly the best way to describe it..

Although I paced myself up Pen Y Ghent, I felt strong up until Ribblehead. Whernside was tough, but the descent destroyed my legs and turned the bones in my feet to rubble. From 15th at the top of Whernside, I fell to 37th coming off the top of Ingleborough where I had no strength in my legs. All the experienced runners tried to coach me through the pain, and all the spectators helped me round with Jelly Babies and water to a 3:24:21 finish.

I didn’t quite meet the targets I set, but I’m very pleased with my first attempt at the 3 Peaks. Will be back with a more experienced head, more distance in the legs and comfier shoes next year.’

The unmissable Breton Holdsworth at the Three Peaks

The unmissable Breton Holdsworth at the Three Peaks

Kieran Carr broke the M70 course record with a time of 4:44:18; Katy Thompson completed her 21st Three Peaks; and despite a fall in the lane up Pen-y-Ghent and a full length dive in the river President Dave Scott still managed to complete his 48th Three Peaks. A tremendous achievement by all 23 of our members who completed this Club Championship race in very testing conditions.

The Fellsman

The usual editor of this roundup, our Media Manager Adrienne Olszewska, reports on her weekend – When the going gets tough…

‘The Fellsman is a high level traverse covering more than 60 miles over very hard rugged moorland. The event climbs over 11,000 feet in its path from Ingleton to Threshfield in the Yorkshire Dales. Most of the route is over privately owned land, the use of which is secured by the organisers for the weekend only. This being the case, the route does not follow well defined footpaths, so the entrants’ navigational skills with a map and compass are tested as well as their physical fitness. Because of this, only fit and experienced walkers or runners should enter.

Five Clayton Harriers took part in this epic and gruelling event; Martin Terry, Simon Halliday, Andy Armstrong, Nicholas Olszewski and Adrienne Olszewska. After a period of dry and warm weather any expectations of an “easy” run went out the window when the forecast was for sleet with snow on the hilltops and sub zero temperatures, and, we were all advised to ensure our mandatory kit was going to be warm enough. In fact, quite a number of competitors were retired because of the weather. There was heavy rain, hail, snow and the temperature fell to around minus five on the tops overnight. It was harsh. The terrain is rugged and you are really put through your paces traversing the unremitting bogginess of the moorlands. It is a seriously tough event.

Adrienne Olszewska at The Fellsman

Adrienne Olszewska at The Fellsman

Nicholas and Adrienne were taking part for the first time. Nick was aiming to complete the course on the same day and Adrienne was aiming for around 24 hours. Both of us just missed our targets as the weather gave us a battering and the bogs were the stuff of nightmares! Having said that, the mind is a funny thing and mere hours later, despite hating the event for much of the time you are doing it, you find yourself thinking about how you can do things better or differently next time! Simon Halliday and Martin Terry completed in around 14 hours, Andy Armstrong in 14 hours 50, Nick in 15 hours 54, and Adrienne 24.5 hours.’
