West Nab – 18 April

Report by Andrew Holt

The third FRA English junior championships race took place across the M62 in Meltham. As usual it was well organised and well attended. The course is similar to the FRA route at Pendle, with an uphill start, longish flat straight and a sharp ramp upwards into the moors. The weather was sunny, warm and hard underfoot with the only mud to be found in the occasional bog and small river crossing. Unusually for a fell race a good percentage of this course is singletrack making overtaking difficult.

Clayton juniors were represented by three runners, Dexta and Liberty Thompson, running only their second FRA fell race, and Briony Holt. Dexta was first away, pacing himself well along the single track and overtaking where and when he could. Finishing we think (photo counting) an amazing fourth. (he was nearly half way back at the start!)

West Nab Fell Race

Briony and Liberty ran next, climbing further up and around the farm. Liberty was rightly cautious about starting too quickly and started towards the rear of the group. Liberty held a steady position around the course, even gaining ground on more experienced athletes. Obviously feeling tired at the end, Liberty finished strongly in approx 25th position, (counted via photos on Woodentops) in a competitive field on a difficult course.

West Nab Fell Race

This was Briony’s second attempt at West Nab, but first at the longer u14 route. After the usual dash out of the field Briony was placed 5th or 6th the, but gained ground and led from from the first downhill stretch, and had a healthy lead at the half way point. A strong challenge from two athletes including last years champion, provided an excellent finish, with Briony narrowly claiming a victory via a sprint in the starting field.

Briony has only to finish one of three races to be joint english champion, and she’s won three out of three so far.

Well done Dexta, Liberty and Briony!

Lakeland Trails Hawkshead – 18 April

Starting and finishing at Hawkshead, the 17km Hawkshead Trail Race, 17km Hawkshead Trail Challenge and 10km Hawkshead Trail Run follow circuits along well marked and marshalled footpaths and bridleways, taking in panoramic views of Lake Windermere and the surrounding peaks of the Coniston Hills, the Langdales and most of the Lakeland fells. All of the routes take in the infamous, mile long, near vertical, killer climb of the “Coffin Trail”! Underfoot conditions are generally good, particularly for those used to off-road running.

Clayton Lady, Sophie McIntosh tackled the 10k. She described it as a tough one with an extra 1.7km (making it 11.7km), not to mention the 1 mile vertical climb called ‘the coffin trail’. However, the scenery was beautiful and she really enjoyed it.

Podium 5k – 18 April

The sun shone but a cold easterly wind hit the runners on each of the 5 laps in the April version of the PODIUM 5K at Barrowford, Lancashire. Three Clayton men took part in the B race.

Report by Richard Stevenson

After missing out on a sub-18 for 5k at Hollingworth Lake 2 weeks ago, I thought I’d give the Podium 5k a go. I’d heard it was a very flat and fast course. We got there early to watch the A race; boy these guys are impressively fast! Then straight after was the B race with a few from the first race kindly helping out as pacers for us. My tactic was to try and stay just in front of the 18 minute pacer which I just about managed then it was down to an eyeball out sprint for the line. Oh yes 17:49! A new PB and my first sub-18 minute 5k. Well done to the fellow Clayton runners there John and Andy. I know Andy was very pleased with his time.

Report from Andy Bradley

Podium 5k perfect for PBs! No pacer for someone hoping to beat 20 mins, not sure some of the a race guys could go that slow!! Asked a couple of lads what they were aiming for and tried to hang on to them, just managed it! Enjoyed the encouragement from the Trawden and clayton attendees, always a help in the last lap when your legs feel like lead. will hope its less windy time as I think I can go (a little bit) faster. £4 well spent and loved watching the a race, some proper runners there!

Y Moelwyn Fell Race – 18 April

Race report from Paul Shackleton

A bakers dozen of Clayton-le-Moors Harriers were at the first British Fell Championships race of the year at Blaenau Ffestiniog on Saturday for the Ras Y Moelwyn race; 16.9k (10 miles) with 850 metres of ascent. Under a cloudless sky we went off down the road from the town centre and climbed up through the old quarries to Moelwyn Mawr at 770 metres. After a steep descent, we then climbed Moelwyn Bach, down a rocky and boggy descent to the Llyn Stwlan dam where the locals offered us jelly babies and flapjacks and then climbed again to Moel Yr Hydd. A fast descent and a run back through the quarry tracks and we were at the finish. The race is a classic! Finley Wild won the men’s race with Rob Hope second and Jasmine Parris was the first lady. Clayton men were led home by Neil Hardiman and fist Clayton lady was Jean Brown. 362 runners took part in the race.

Pete Hartley Memorial Liver Hill Fell Race – 31 March

Report From Chris Funnell

It might have sleeting and gusting winds but that didn’t dampen the buzz of excitement as the Pete Hartley Memorial Liver Hill Fell Race heralded the start of British Summertime and the eagerly awaited return of mid-week racing.

There was a strong display of orange and white with 22 Clayton members (including El P) making up a total turnout of 158 runners in the starting line up on the sports field at the Marl Pits. Due to the high winds the only part of the pre-race briefing I managed to hear was “…you finish on the race track”. In the end after some deliberation and consultation with fellow Clayton members I opted to pack my cag in my bum bag rather than wear it as I remained optimistic about the conditions once we got going.

I remembered the race from last year and the need to try to get a reasonable position in the initial charge across the field which then bottlenecks into a narrow path up an embankment that quickly churns up like a wildebeest river crossing. Once clear of the embankment there was a steady climb of about 500 feet over the next mile or so before reaching the open moor and a game of Russian roulette over the boggy sections commenced. Seeing others sink in front of me I successfully negotiated two bogs but succumbed to a third immediately sinking up to my shins. At this point the front runners including Jacob Boyle could be seen running back from the summit. After rounding the summit and the initial descent you were then back on to the boggy moorland and this time with a head wind to contend with. The route had at least 4 or 5 stiles which on the return leg had to be negotiated with runners on the out leg. Depending on timing these at least provided a couple of welcome seconds of respite. The final mile was an enjoyable descent and the chance to stretch out although in the final section only just managing to stay upright (more though good luck than good footwork). It was then back on to the playing fields and a cordoned route onto the race track and a final sprint to the finish where a young and enthusiastic race helper congratulated me and thrust a Cadburys Crème Egg into my hand. It doesn’t get better than this I thought. This is an excellent organised race held this year in memory of the sad loss of the excellent fell runner, photographer and Rossendale Harrier, Pete Hartley.

Katy Thompson added; ” I think Pete must have been smiling down on us because, although the wind was still cold and strong, the rain and snow from earlier in the day held off for the race.

As usual, I was very slow on the first climb but came to across the muddy fields and managed to pass George.   There are a number of tricky stiles to negotiate, made even more difficult when you meet the front runners coming back. I could see Linda Lord on the loop to the summit of Liver Hill, but she was too far ahead to catch.

The first half of the return run is much more uphill than you realise on the way out, then it’s a fast downhill on tracks and through the woods. I passed El Presidente on the way down, but he got me back on the slight incline just before the final fields. (Very ungentlemanly of you, Dave!).

After the kamikaze descent familiar from the cross country, it was across the muddy fields to the finish where Denise was handing out crème eggs to everyone. Looking down at my legs, they were so muddy that I couldn’t tell where my running bottoms ended and the skin began!”

Littleborough 5k Road Series – 1 April

Five club members braved atrocious weather conditions to compete in the first race of the popular Littleborough 5K Road Race series organised by Cannonball Events. This fast course with very little climb is a great opportunity to test out your racing legs and push for a personal best. Ninety nine runners took part in this event.

Congratulations to Team Roche who cleaned up the V55 category taking home the accolade for the male (John) and female (Irene) so well done to them. Three other members also braved the miserable conditions to race; Jean Knightley, Leanne Cottam and Nikki Kay.

Well done to Nikki Kay in particular who managed to knock a whole 5 minutes off her best time in this event last year – looks like all her hard work in training for the London Marathon is really paying off.

Pendle Fell Race – 4 April

Senior Race

On a glorious Easter Saturday a fantastic turnout of 41 Clayton-le-Moors Harriers lined up for this classic local fell race; a good few of them running their first fell race. Clayton-le-Moors Harriers won the Lancashire Team Trophy and fielded an impressive 8 complete mens teams and a ladies team. We had vet category wins for Alan Life, Pete Booth, Irene Roche and Katy Thompson.  Chris Holdsworth had a great race finishing in 6th place overall and 2nd place Lancashire Championship.

First time fell racer Danny Collinge said; “I have one word for it, and one word only…HARD!”

Competing in only her second fell race, Helen Burnett reported; “It was great to take part in the race as a member of Clayton up a hill I can see from my window at home. As a new fell runner and newish Clayton member, I received loads of support and encouragement from the long standing fell running members who were both running and marshalling. Great family atmosphere with the kids races first and then lovely to see the friendly banter of George and Katy Thompson in the first climb up Pendle, an inspiration for me and Dave! I did enjoy the steep climbs but need to toughen up for the downhill and was pleased with a strong finish down the last mile on the road. Enjoyed a well earned shandy afterwards in the Pendle Inn with a lot of the Claytoners. I’m proud to have done a race where local friends have said “nutters” and “mental”.

Dave Burnett added, “Yet again I have been shown what fell racing is all about, losing over 20 places on the second ascent was soul destroying – I’m either going to get fitter or carry Numchucks next year.

First time fell racer, Matthew Duckworth described his race as “awful” but added he can’t wait for the next one!

Another new fell racer, Michelle Butschock said; “This was my 1st race on Pendle and it feels like a real accomplishment. Had all sorts of negative thoughts in my head going up but once at the trig I must’ve had the biggest smile on my face!! The marshal at the trig was fantastic, really encouraging, all the Claytoners were at the finish cheering me on inmy battle to the line with another runner, the whole atmosphere through the day was fab. ”

Parkrun roundup

Another week of great parkruns for our club members and, with it being the Easter Weekend, it would seem there has been a little bit of parkrun tourism going on as well.

We took the top four postions at the Burnley parkrun so very well done there to Jacob Watson, Mark Aspinall, Jon Hanson and Paul Brannon. Jonathon Pye was second at Penrith and John Hartley was in fifth at Pendle.  Shiny new PBs for Stephen Ainsworth, Eloise Pemberton and Rachel Stevenson. Well done to Marion Wilkinson, who despite her long-term involvement with Burnley parkrun, only took part for the first time this weekend!

Latest standings show Irene Roche leading the Ladies table and Jacob Watson leading the Mens table.

Runners of the Month

Well done George Pier for winning February senior runner of the month for his great performance at Muddy Shoes & at the Mid Lancs League Cross Country races.

Well done junior runner of the month Ryan Clarke for a brilliant run at Winter Warmer 10K.

Kit Manager

The club is looking for a new Kit Manager to take responsibility for our junior and senior clothing range. So, if you want to play a key part in making Team Clayton the smartest team around this is your chance! The job involves sourcing and designing new lines, storing the stock, as well as selling to members. The club wants to move to offering electronic payment as well as providing an online shop, so some computer skills are needed for the role.

We need more help to make our club even better. If you think that you could be our Kit Manager, please get in touch with either myself or any committee member.

Stanley Park 10K – 28th February

In much better conditions than last weeks Great North West Half Marathon, six of our club members  travelled over to Blackpool to take part in this race on Saturday and there were some great performances. Junior runner, Jordan McDonald, finished in 6th place overall in a great time of 37:39 closely followed by fellow junior runner, George Pier who finished in 10th place overall in a time of 38:49.

Chasing the two juniors, Jon Hanson came in 11th place just a few seconds behind George.  He said; “The race was great. Well organized and a good conditions for running. Will be running it again later in the year for hopefully another PB. Jordan and George had a fantastic run”

Jason Pier and our sole lady runner, Sarah Angelone, also grabbed new PBs so well done to them.

Sarah said, “Great event….fantastic marshal as we came back to the track cheering and high fiving all the runners. Got a bit side tracked watching the ducks on the pond in parts so time dropped off but then remembered John’s ‘have a word’ comment and got back in the zone!” Adam Hamer returns to racing after a break to travel down under and finished a shade over the hour mark.  Well done everyone!

PFO Orienteering Spring Series – Nick of Pendle – 28th February

The Nick O’Pendle is characterised by wide open vistas and lots of contours, so when the weather held and the cloud lifted, fast winning times were guaranteed.  The courses through the wide open spaces were a mix of easy lines and invisible pin points.  Most relished the physical challenge and enjoyed the day.

Mark Nutter and Colin Woolford both took part in the technical Brown course.  Mark finished in 6th place in a time of 108:29:00 and Colin came in 9th place in a time of 144:40:00. Colin Woolford reported good conditions, but tough going seeing Pendle from some very different angles. Out again the following day, Colin also took part in the Haglofs Open5 adventure race in the Yorkshire Dales.

Junior Member Christopher Brown finished in 1st place in the yellow event in a time of 18:42 and then went on to take part in the Orange event as well.

There’s no such thing as bad weather…

Only soft people! As tough as ever, a bit of weather can’t stop our hardy members getting out and about, competing in all kinds of events; day and night, sometimes sporting bin bags, sometimes braving it out in just a club vest and shorts.

Mr Sparkle’s Dark ‘Un – 20th February 2015

Three intrepid Clayton Harriers fired up their head torches and took part in this night-time race around Darwen Moors and Tockholes. 72 runners lined up for a couple of stiff climbs, open moorland, lots of mud and a dash down to the finish.

Night run

Report by Nerina Gill

“ I seriously questioned my sanity heading out in sleet, dark and 3 degrees. In a tee-shirt and shorts. I was called “brave” at the start. That’s one word for it. But the start is sheltered, and there’s a long climb, so I was plenty warm enough by the time we reached the moors. Thoroughly enjoyed the mad, muddy dash through the boggy puddles, and then the helter skelter pelt down Stepback, which was half path, half streambed. I could hear Julia’s footsteps behind me on the run down to the finish, but I couldn’t see a thing ahead, except my head torch reflected back in the stinging hail. The chip butty and cider in front of the fire in the pub afterwards made the ten minutes changing into dry clothes in the car all worthwhile. Great night.”

Bleasedale Circle Fell Race – 21st February

Report by Irene Roche

Clayton Ladies

Irene Roche and Vicky Heys rocking the windswept look after the Bleasdale Circle Fell Race

“On arrival at Bleasedale with Vicky Heys, who persuaded me to give the race a go, the weather was looking undecided. Was it going to rain, hail or hold on to fine for the time required? It was certainly cold though – evident as most of us “warmed up” prior to the race by drinking tea and coffee in the village hall. What a good atmosphere though, so laid back and no urgency to leave the hall and warm up before the race. Prepared for a cold and windy run, many kept to wearing running jackets, some with sleeves whilst the hardiest braved just their club vests. We definitely needed the wind proof jackets!

The race itself I thoroughly enjoyed, flagged all the way round so no worries about maps. After a good plunge through muddy fields, breathless climbing up hills and much needed practice to steer down the slopes I arrived at the finish. Clayton ladies won the team prize, counting in Vicky, me and Linda. It was good to see Pete Booth competing after around eighteen months of nursing an injury. Well done Pete!

I’m glad I did the race and intend to do more fell races this year.

Great North West Half Marathon – 22nd February 2015

Nine Clayton-le-Moors Harriers braved wild conditions to take part in the Great North West Half Marathon in Blackpool.

Lynsey Birtwistle reported; “One word brutal! It was quite nice running along the front sheltered and the wind behind you, but when you turned the corner to come back there was a slight incline and the wind was full pelt in your face and hail too! I felt like crying! It was a tough day weather-wise but well-organised and great to see some Clayton support at the finish line!

Clayton Ladies

Alex Cran reported; “Well myself Paul, grandad Kev and Russ managed to get our hands on some bin bags at the start. What a God-send. The weather as you headed south was foul, foul, foul. I thought at the start I’d take the bin bag off after a couple of miles but we all kept them on for the whole race!

Blackpool Half

Binbag running attire -it’s the future! Maybe we should get some tangerine ones.

It was a confusing first few miles as you ran past the first mile marker, then the third then the second. But I got my head around it and set off with Paul for a steady run. It was bearable along the lower prom but the upper was awful. I don’t think I’ve ever been so cold. The last couple of miles were the coldest I can remember in a race. But it’s done and the hot chocolate in Costa afterwards was nectar from the Gods!”

Andy Quinn reported; “It was pretty cold, but I think this actually made me run faster for the last 5k because I just wanted to get the race over with. Managed a PB too so well pleased.”

Loughrigg-Silver Howe Race  –  22nd February

Report by Andrew Firth

This is an early season classic fell race in the Lake District that starts from the back of Millans Park in Ambleside, climbs Loughrigg, down the back to cross the road, and up to Silver Howe which overlooks Grasmere. It then returns via the same route, climbing back to the summit of Loughrigg and back to the park via a sneaky checkpoint at Lily Tarn. The organiser (Jon Broxup of Kendal AC) clearly likes to keep the race low key since it isn’t usually advertised via FRA calender, or indeed Kendal AC’s website. People tend to find out via word of mouth, however this year the date was eventually revealed on the FRA forum which probably accounts for why there were probably double last years 40 or so that did the race.

I decided it would be a good idea to make a weekend of it and booked a B&B in Ambleside for Sat night. Myself and Dinah enjoyed an excellent walk on Saturday afternoon – up Loughrigg (a sneaky reccy of the early part of the race) down to Grasmere via the lakeside path returning to Ambleside via the “coffin route” to Rydal Hall. The weather on Saturday was excellent with brilliant sunshine but a cold breeze.

The B&B did the best breakfast that I’ve had for a long time, although it was weighing heavily on my stomach when we lined up on the start line for the safety briefing. The pre-race kit was very important because the weather had changed dramatically from the previous day with sleet at town level and quite a strong wind. Amazingly, two runners were attempting to run  without waterproof leggings – both were immediately DSQ. No kit check was necessary for me since I was wearing all of it with my vest with number on the outside of my cag so the marshalls could see it easily.

I set off in my rightful place at the back and decided to pace myself to try to keep running up the early steep track. I managed to keep plodding away and for the first time ran all the way to the gate to the fell, although I cant say it was particularly fast. The only other Clayton runner was super vet, Jack Holt, although by this stage he was well out of sight up front. As we climbed it was clear the the sleety rain in Ambleside had changed to proper snow, and, with the strong wind, I was very glad I had opted to wear full cover from the off. Despite the fact that there were footprints in the snow to be followed, people were deviating from the optimum route on the way to Loughrigg summit and I managed to make up a few places with my route knowledge from previous races and the reccy the previous day.

I could have done with a pair of skis for the run down the back of Loughrigg to the road, but even so caught a few more runners on the descent. When we crossed the road there were several cars having difficulty in the 2/3 inches of snow – the road is a steep link between Langdale and Grasmere – but I would not have even thought of attempting it in the conditions.

The run out to Silver Howe is quite difficult terrain at the best of times – but now with heavy snow and mist the only option was to either get the compass out and navigate, or follow previous footsteps and hope that the snow didn’t cover them!! Again a few runners in front made the wrong choices (clearly runners were trying different lines) and I once again gained a few places by the time I reached the summit. At last we turned to return and I enjoyed the run back to the road – no runners in sight to aim at, but I could still follow the footsteps in the snow but also making sure it was what I considered to be the best line.

By the road crossing I had caught the runner in front and managed to pull away from him on the climb back to Loughrigg summit. The marshalls had sensibly descended approx 300 metres from the summit to to shelter next to a wall – but they insisted that we still climb to the summit, advising that it was in any event the quickest way to Lily tarn. At the summit I caught sight of another runner in front (everyone was very spread out by this stage) which proved a useful target to aim at on the descent, which was even more tricky since the snow was now deeper and covering up little rocks on the path. I managed to follow the right footprints back to Lily tarn – but the O punch for marking our numbers must have been covered in snow because I couldnt find it. The final descent was excellent and even though I felt I had run better that the previous year, I crossed the line in 2 hours 2 minutes, some 7 minutes down on previous years.

I have to say that running in these conditions, whilst challenging, is really rewarding and it’s races like this that stick in the memory because you have been battling the elements as well as the course. I’m really appreciative that the organiser was happy to go ahead in the conditions in these heath and safety conscious times. Indeed I made a special point of thanking all the marshals and the organiser at the end. I can throughly recommend this race – if anybody decides to do it next year then if you are struggling to find out when it is then contact Jon Broxap at Pete Blands. It’s highly unlikely that the results will be published anywhere on the web – I still cant find last years, but I estimate that I was about 10/12 place from the back in a field of maybe 80.

Sedburgh School Fell Race – 22nd February

Congratulations to junior member Briony Holt for her win at the Sedburgh School fell race on a very cold, sleety and dismal day.  She no doubt brightened up the field in her signature odd socks.  There’s just no stopping her.

Peeler’s Hike – 22nd February

Adrienne Olszewska took part in this low-key event organised by Bury District Scouts and one of the many LDWA challenge events.  The route is a choice of 23 or 15 miles from Bury District Scout HQ via Elton Reservoir, Affetside, Peel Tower,  Holcombe Moor, Helmshore, Irwell Vale, Summerseat and Burrs country park.  A great event to get those longer distance off-road miles in.  Not really a race, more of a personal challenge as you rarely see any published results for these events.  They remain popular with runners as they can be tough as well as interesting routes.  Didn’t spot any other Clayton folk on the day but a number of runners from Trawden AC club took part.

The weather took a definite turn for the worse and on reaching Peel Tower in a bit of blizzard I was tempted to opt for the short route and head back to base, however,  not wanting to cop out, I headed out across the moors into what amounted to a whiteout! I was glad of the company of some  friends from Skelmersdale Boundary Harriers and Parbold Pink Panthers as together we managed to cross the snowy, boggy moors relatively quickly, if a bit frozen by the time we made it down to Helmshore.

After that it’s a low-level trot back to Bury alongside the East Lancs Railway and the River Irwell on some of the muddiest footpaths in the universe! All in all a great route and highly recommended.

Trailblazer 12 Charity Challenge – 22nd February

Summarised report from John Lloyd

100 miles in 12 hours on a 5k trail circuit. With a good amount of sponsorship we were raring to go.  Various Club members from Clayton-le-Moors Harriers and Trawden AC had showed their support in the morning and early afternoon. When the weather turned into snow and horizontal winds the support was amazing. Whether its running a lap or standing on a bridge clapping nearby, every soul there was a huge boost to the team. At the half way point we were way in front of schedule. The course was in great condition and was running well. Then the weather took a change for the worse, I think it says so much about the team of people I was with that it actually galvanised them. There was no moaning, just suggestions of how we get through, what were the best tactics. The last few miles were tough, but I was lifted by the second wave of support we got.

Parkrun roundup

It’s been a great week for our junior parkrunners with 4 of them earning brand new PBs at the Burnley event. Well done to Sophie Ashworth, Lennon Jackson, Annabel Wilcock, and Rachel Stevenson. Not to be outdone by the youngsters V70 Val Lawson also pulled a new PB out of the bag at the Burnley parkrun. Must be something in the water! Jonathon Pye did a bit of parkrun tourism and came in third at the Penrith event. Paul Hesketh and John Hartley both finished in the top ten at Pendle. Running legend Ron Hill was parkrunning at Marple and fell running stalwart, Wendy Dodds was 6th lady finisher at Fell Foot. Well done to all of our parkrunners

And finally…

Don’t forget it’s Tangerine Training Night on Tuesday 24th February.  The future’s bright at Clayton-le-Moors Harriers, and to celebrate the plan is to turn up wearing a tangerine hoodie or something similar in bright orange. It would also be a fantastic milestone to break the attendance record set at 60 people. Go on… you know you want to!

Do you know that Clayton Harriers will organise at least 10 running events this year, including the UK Hill and Fell Relays? The major feature of this month’s edition is an appeal from our Race Promotions Coordinator, Mike Eddleston for all Clayton members to ease the pressure on our race organisers by committing to help at a minimum of one club event per year. Stoop, Red Nose, Grand Tour and the rest of the week’s action

There’s just no stopping our club members. Even in the midst of Christmas preparations you are still out there competing and taking part in a range of events. Congratulations to Ron Hill on running every single day for the last 50 years. An amazing achievement.

Tour de Helvellyn – Saturday 20st December 2014

154 people finished this event and 12 retired. Four of our club members travelled up to the Lake District to compete in this tough, winter 38 mile event. Well done to Martin Terry for an excellent 14th place. Jean Brown finished 33rd overall and was the third lady to complete the course. Andy Armstong and Nicholas Olszewski also put in a couple of solid runs finishing in 54th and 57th place.

Report by Nicholas Olszewski

The day started early, at 04:15, loaded up the car with what seemed an excessive amount of kit, before heading over to Colne to collect Martin Terry. Met Andy Armstrong and Jean Brown at Gisburn and travelled up together in the one car arriving in Askham with plenty of time to go through the final registration process and kit check.

Tour de Helvellyn

Martin Terry and Jean Brown making last minute preparations for the Tour de Helvellyn

At last we were off, it was about 07:45 and just about becoming light. Jean and Martin sped off into the early morning sunrise, Andy and I trotting along at a nice steady pace. For me this race is a part of my master plan for competing in the Lakeland 100 next July and was about time on my feet and acclimatising my legs to the Lakeland hills.

Tour de Helvellyn

Andy Armstrong at the Tour de Helvellyn

We passed through the first checkpoint at Martindale, the next at Patterdale didn’t open till 09:30 and anyone arriving before that time would have to wait. So, no sense rushing too much as we had a long way to go yet. We arrived at about 09:40 had a quick snack and ploughed on though to the next checkpoint at Greenside, which was in the middle of nowhere. Ahead of us was the climb over Sticks Pass.

As we gained elevation the wind became stronger and the temperature dropped, but the view of snow-capped tops was spectacular. On the descent to the checkpoint at Thirlmere, which became very steep and muddy at one point, I did a dramatic slide on my arse for a good way. Andy commented that if it’d been part of a fell race you’d have had someone there with a video camera recording runners sliding down. We checked into a rather posh and very clean Legburthwaite Village Hall at Thirlmere, which I felt guilty entering as I was covered from head to toe in mud after my dramatic slide.

The next section I have to admit I didn’t enjoy, I’m not a road runner and I find running on the road a bit tedious. The normal route on the east side of Thirlmere had been changed due to forestry work and re-routed down a quiet lane on the west side of Thirlmere, no other option for the race organizers, but this section was hard and when looking down the lake from the head it looked like an infinity lake, which didn’t help. We reached the check point and moved forward towards Dunmail Raise.

The climb from Dunmail to Grizedale Tarn was hard and steep but you knew that you’d turned a corner and were heading back. I could imagine this section being quite treacherous in icy conditions as the path is narrow and wet with a very steep drop off to your left.

The journey from Dunmail to the next checkpoint at Patterdale went without any hiccups, apart from being a little annoyed with myself for following others instead of taking the route I’d plotted for a small section round Grizedale Tarn. I’ll try not to do that again. Arriving in Patterdale the day behind us was now starting to tell, we had one stiff climb left and, having just guzzled half a litre of flat coke, I was ready for it. By now Andy had worked out that we would return just before it was very dark which was a relief as the Cockpit Stone Circle can be a bit confusing in the dark.

We arrived at the final checkpoint, Martindale in good spirits and knew the end was now in sight, as we trundled along. Motivation to keep running is hard as it’s so easy to walk when you can run, but as the light began to fail we passed the Cockpit and I could see the light of Askham shimmering not far away. As we entered the community centre and dibbed for the last time it felt great that we had done it and great to have done it with someone as so many races are all about heads down and running your guts out. It made a change to spend eight and half hours running, walking, laughing and feeling the pain with someone else.

A great day, great event and I’ll be back next year, possibly with my race head on, just to see if I can knock an hour off this years time. Thanks Andy for running round with me.

Stoop Fell Race – Sunday 21st December

5 miles – 800ft of ascent. Report from the Woodentops website

It was a typical Penistone Hill day driving rain and wind for the 26th annual Stoop race the snow from last week had disappeared which made the course very wet, lots of bogs to fall in. After a bit of track at the start the bog arrived quite quickly. There was lots of camaraderie as runners helped each other along and tried to avoid losing their Santa hats to the bog.

Festive fell running

Lots of fast running too on slightly firmer ground, some challenging slippy descents where I think everyone fell over at least once, and a good battle in the ladies race. The juniors got the worst of the weather which made it more challenging as they charged round clad in their Santa hats.

And finally…

Why not get in the Christmas spirit by coming along to the Christmas Eve social run.  Meet at Barley Car Park for an 11.00am start.  We’ll be heading up or around Pendle Hill.  Juniors, seniors and walkers all welcome.

For the more competitive amongst you, there is a 10k in Worden Park, Leyland on Boxing Day at 10.00am.  Perfect for running off the excesses of your Christmas dinner. Or if you fancy a bit more off road, how about the Whinberry Naze at 11.30 at Marl Pits in Rawtenstall.

Whatever you do, have a great run and don’t forget to take lots of pictures and tell us all about it. We am also interested in any running resolutions you might have for the coming year?  Let us know and we will feature them in the New Year Roundup.

Have a Merry Christmas!

Lee Mill Fell Relays, Turkey Trot and the rest of the week’s action

Mud, mud, glorious mud. There’s nothing quite like it… after an arctic start to Saturday with a hard frost and icy conditions to wild, wet and windy on Sunday, the common theme to many events you have been taking part in this weekend has been mud.  Lots and lots and lots of it!

Lee Mills Relays – 14th December

This is a new relay event set in the Lee mill Quarry site, for teams of four runners; men, ladies or mixed. All four runners run an individual leg over a 10k flagged course. This is a hard and demanding route run in wintery conditions.

Three teams were entered by Clayton; Ladies V40, Ladies V50 and Men’s V40

Running Trophy

Lee Mill Fell Relay Trophy for the winning Ladies Team

Ladies’ Fell Captain, Jean Brown reported; “thanks to the two teams of ladies who braved the weather to run the inaugural Lee Mill relays today and to Rossendale Harriers for organising. I think we all had a great day out, if very wet, windy and boggy. We were the first ladies team home with the second of our ladies teams third (there were five ladies teams racing). I am sure we will be back for more in 2015!”

Mytholmroyd Fell Race – 14th December

99 runners completed the 6.2 mile course on a day of strong winds, mist and rain showers with two of our club members putting in a couple of fine runs.

Fell Running

The Mytholmroyd Fell Race is mainly run over open moorland. In poor weather conditions runners may be required to use navigation skills in order to complete the course. The route is flagged but only has limited marshalling. Due to the nature of the race route and the time of year at which the race is run, novice or inexperienced fell runners should not attempt the race.
