Juniors at Rivington Pike

This report is brought to you by Briony Holt…….

RiviPike2014_08
We had a great turnout in the juniors races at Rivington Pike this Saturday. The sun was out but there were some harsh winds up at the top of the hill that the U14’s and U16’s had to brave! There were 15 junior runners taking part in the second race of the ‘English Fell Championships’ and there were some pleasing results!
In the under 8’s, Rachel Stevenson put in a very promising result to secure 11th girl.RiviPike2014_02
First Clayton runner home in the under 10’s was Jackson McKay coming 5th boy, followed by Keira Stevenson 21st girl and Amelia Dugdale 23rd girl.

Next it was the under 12’s with myself taking 2nd girl, Adam Stevenson 27th boy, Adam Quinn 29th boy, Millie Stubbs 16th girl and Daniel Bradley taking 40th boy .The under 14’s race finally came with them running the same route as the u16’s. Tom Bradley took 23rd boy taking first Clayton harrier home. Next up was Simon Wilshaw 36th boy, closely followed by Ryan Clarke 38th boy. RiviPike2014_07Alice Pier was first under 14 Clayton girl coming 30th girl overall.

The last race of Saturday was the under 16’s with two of our Clayton members racing in it. Curtis Holt was first Clayton member taking 24th boy and Beth Quinn was first Clayton girl taking 25th girl.
Well done to everyone who raced and thank you for all the parents who came and supported us!

Well done to all our runners and a big thank you to Briony for this report. We’d love for other juniors to write race reports as well; just tell Marion if you want to give it a go. All the other pictures are here.

Juniors; Rivington Pike Fell Race

This is Race 4 in our Three Seasons Challenge and takes place on Saturday 19th April. Registration for the u8-u16 races is behind the school from 11 a.m and the races start from 1pm. All the info you need is on the Horwich Harriers website. I’d highly recommend printing off the entry form and filling it out in advance; it’s an English Junior Championship race and it’ll be busy. Under 18 race the senior course which has a different start location and time.
All races start on the track behind the school and follow the same out and back route towards the pike. Each age group is run separately and has a different turn around point which is well marked; see the maps on the link above.
Don’t forget to get registered in plenty of time, warm up properly and have something to eat and drink well before the race.

Haworth Hobble; Sat 15th March

Eight Clayton members made the trip over to Haworth for this classic 32 mile trot around the gritstone moors of North Yorkshire. Originally a pairs only event, this is now a predominantly singles race and part of the RunFurther ultra series (where it’s classed as a short race!)

Conditions were cool and dry at the start but after a small delay the field were soon out on the windy tops of Bronte country. The mostly runnable route brings runners over the Pennine Way and then via the Gorple Road to Hurstwood. It then slowly loops round to visit Todmorden, Hebden Bridge and Heptonstall (via Stoodley Pike) before returning over the moors to Haworth.

First Clayton home was Jamie Baldwin (newly re-invented as an ultra runner) in 4h50m and 25th out of 355 finishers, followed by Martin Terry (5h10m) and Andy Armstrong (5h22m). In the pairs; Mick Dobson and Ivan Whigham completed their first Hobble in 5h42m and Dave Naughton donned his Dr Dre headphones to partner Alex Braysford round in 5h54m. Wendy Dodds was our sole Clayton lady (come on ladies, where are you?), finishing in 6h14m and first V55.

Congratulations to KCAC for running a well organised event with hot dogs, hot cross buns, loads of biscuits (and even whisky tasting at Mankinholes), followed by a hot feed at the finish.

Junior Training; Sat 22nd Feb is PARKRUN day!

Apologies for the short notice but we’ve decided to make this coming Saturday 22nd a parkrun day instead of training. You can blame Jordan, it was his idea 😉

If you can come along for 8:45 and we can all warm up together. Bring your club vests and don’t forget your barcodes.

If you’ve never done parkrun before then you can register HERE and it’s free.

JUNIOR SANTA RUN; Christmas Eve at Barley

…our traditional social run on Pendle. Meet at the Barley village car park for an 11.00 a.m start. This event is open to everybody (it’s free!) with the one exception that under 12s need to bring a parent or a nominated adult to run along with them. Apologies for this, it’s an insurance issue that I have no control over.

This is a purely social run, we’ll group you by ability but no-one gets left behind (the faster you run, the more you loop back!).

– This is the important bit; the weather is often poor in December. It’ll probably be cold or raining, it may well be both. The prevailing wind direction means that storm fronts often aren’t visible from down in the village, it can often be significantly worse when you get up on Pendle.

None of this is a problem if you’ve got the right kit on, so make sure you bring;

  • Windproof jacket.
  • Appropriate longsleeved baselayers (as many as you think you’ll need).
  • Hat (or buff) and gloves.
  • Long leg cover is optional but highly recommended if you usually feel the cold.
  • Decent trail/fell shoes.
  • ABSOLUTELY NO HOODIES; I WILL SEND YOU AWAY!!!

Hope to see you there (preferably wearing a santa hat!)

Juniors at the Cannonball Winter 5k

The Cannonball Winter 5k starts on Wednesday November 27th.

We’ve been talking to the organiser, John Lloyd, about junior entries to this race series (thanks to Andy Bradley & Jason for setting the ball rolling) and he’s very keen. He’s agreed to put on some junior prizes and to give a free buff to all entrants. Because it’s classed as a road race and is insured by UKA there is a strict minimum age limit of 11 on race day.

It’s worth pointing out that it’ll be dark! Pre entry to the series makes it much easier for the organiser on the night, it also guarantees you a free head torch and reflective bands (which you have to pay for separately if you enter single races or on the night).

All the details are on the Cannonball website. Have a good read and if you’re entering, don’t forget to take your batteries.
