Junior Training; We need your help!!

Because of the recent growth in numbers and the change in training format we need some help on Thursday evenings.
We need at least one, preferably two, senior runners to come along on a regular basis and help with the two groups that head out on the roads from Spirit of Sport at 6pm. You won’t be asked to coach or lead the session, just be an extra pair of hands to keep the session safe.
It’s a good paced run and you’ll need to have a decent turn of speed to keep up with them; it would make for a good training session for the right ability runner. I can give you any more information you need before you commit to anything.
If you can commit to at least one hour a month then please let me know a.s.a.p. We desperately need a couple of runners for next Thursday (November 14th) and you can contact me via the Junior Email.

thanks, Andy.

Mid Lancs Liverpool

We have been sent an e mail re the Liverpool xc regarding numbers. You may or may not know your Mid Lancs number does not apply for this race.We therefore need to let them know who from the club is likeley to run, this is for juniors, ladies and men. Please let the respective xc country captains know as soon as possible, either directly or via replying to this message.
It is a cracking race and the opportuntity to see and race against some of the best in the country as it is used as a qualifier for the British teams. You often see athletes from Norfolk,Devon, Scotland etc so no excuses about how far it is,only takes an hour from Burnley and look to car share. We appreciate it is the same day as the Tour but if that is not your cup of tea come and support the club at this National event.

Team Clayton Report – Shepherds Skyline FR

Shepherds 8

Almost immediately as we drew near to the Shepherds Skyline route, we arrived with signs that this would be a special fell race.  The ominous Stoodly Pike overshadowed us as we arrived along the extensive Lumbutts Road to The Shepherds Rest Inn. The sound of cattle bells rode the wind as we were greeted with the sight of the juniors tackling their big ascent in their respective race. Shepherds 4There was only one hardy Clayton junior here today, last years U8 race winner Christopher Brown. He has moved up the age category this year though and raced in the U10’s for the first time. He did fantastice to come in an amazing 3rd place on what i have heard described as ‘a proper fell course’ with lots of mud thrown in!

Runners from all clubs began to warm up on the beginning climb, testing their mettle on the forthcoming hills. The runners gathered at the start line, where only the braver Clayton members remained in their shorts and club vests. The race began and the sun emerged Shepherds 9whilst the racers ahead all tussled and fought to find their footing among the narrow early steep passage.

Although the path is narrow, there are avenues in which you are able to pick off the other runners should you get pushed back in the starting rush. Though be warned, make note of some the steeper cliff edges for the way back down! I almost had to be rescued by the Calder Valley runner I was trying to stay ahead of in the finishing decent.

After a steady climb the race levels out onto the boggy moors as we made our way over to Stoodly Pike. There you will find yourself hurtling down a decent, which is not for the weak ankled! After a steady flat, a fell necessity of a demonic, thigh burner of a hill was to be tackled with many runners resorting to the fell running shuffle.

We were then thrust back upon the route from whence we originally ran. Here the downhill descent battle’s begun to emerge between runners from Chorley, Calder Valley, Glossopdale and myself. I was pushed all the way to the end, tacking a tumble and a few ankle jaunts along the way whilst managing to finish in at 28th and a time of 50:44. There were also great finishing runs from Sean Clare in 57:32, whilst Simon Stansfield pipped fellow Clayton member Mark Nutter by 2 seconds and both impressively finished under the hour mark.

The elements of the route, the runners and the weather teamed together to create a fantastic atmosphere for this fell race. One that I definitely intend to partake in again!

Thanks To Chris Holdsworth for this report!

Mid Lancs Cross Country Results – Burnley

Saturday 26th October saw the Juniors out in force at the first Mid Lancs XC fixture of the season at Towneley Park, Burnley. In the younger age categories we saw some fine performances and results especially from Millie Stubbs in the U11 girls race. The U13 girls race saw new girl Alice Gane make her Clayton debut at cross country. In the U15 boys the competition is hotting up with Ryan Clarke now getting his rewards for the hard work he’s been putting in at training (watch out Kenan and Curtis)  With no team positions awarded to the U11’s it was left to the U13 girls and U15 boys to race their way to 4th place. Special mention to little Finley Stubbs who after losing a shoe continued to work hard through the mud and water in the U11 boys.

U11 Girls: Millie Stubbs 5th, Ella Dorrington 25th, Roanna Holdsworth 26th, Anna Ashworth 36th, Keira Stevenson 37th and Grace Root 42nd.

U11 Boys: Jackson McKay 17th, James Ashworth 20th, Adam Stevenson 36th and Finley Stubbs 47th.

U13 Girls: Briony Holt 10th, Eleanor Root 18th, Alice Gane 39th, Lucy Stevenson 57th. Team Result 4th.

U13 Boys: Tom Bradley 12th and Daniel Bradley 42nd.

U15 Girls: Alice Pier 15th.

U15 Boys: Kenan Eti 26th, Ryan Clarke 28th, Curtis Holt 29th, Alexander Townrow 43rd, Simon Wilshaw 47th. Team Result 4th.

Thru’ The Villages 8.45 Mile Race

After approx a month off the racing scene ,due to injury etc thought i had better make an effort and get back into it ,so away i went to quite a tough hilly course. Through the villages 8.45 mile race, this is actually a favourite of mine and today was my 4th running of it! I don’t know why it is a favourite because at this very venue 2 yrs ago i wrote my car off but on that fateful day i still ran the race ,while my car was taken to a nearby garage!

Derrick 1

Anyway onto today, the weather was a little overcast with a little drizzle. The usual speech (pre-race instructions) took place by the starter and away we go. I quite like running up hills now as i use them in a big way when i’m training, i was quite surprised how at ease i was with the first climb and was feeling strong passing over a good half of the other runners. This first hill is approx a mile long before it levels out before coming to the junction. Then it’s a run down through the town before climbing back up again! This race is pretty much like this throughout, up and down!

I must say the training i have been doing is paying off and i felt good all the way round i was approx a minute down on last year but i think that was to do with the headwind more than anything i was pleased that i went through 10k on 44min which by my standards an taking the course into account i was happy with only 12 mth ago most of my 10k were 45 to 46 min on a flat course i would have easly done 42 today which is an improvement! A good race well marshalled and if u want to test yourself one to enter and free brews and hotpot at the end was welcome treat.

The Tour Of Pendle 2013 – Update 03/11/13

pendle1

Entries for this years event have already exceeded the 300+ mark & a list of the current entries can be found at this link – 2013 Full Tour Entries

There is a strict limit of 500 runners for the event so pre-entry is advised to be sure of avoiding disapointment on the day (Plus it’s cheaper & you’ve more chance of a t-shirt!)

The parking in Barley village is limited so could we please ask that people car share where possible to ease the impact on a small rural village.

The runners ‘trod’ between CP6 & CP7 is severely eroded so this area is going to be closed on race day, can we ask runners to stick to the ‘official’ route up the wall side before descending on a more direct line to CP7

Ladies Cross Country

Well done and thank you to all the Clayton ladies who ran at Towneley on Saturday. We had a good a turn out, so good we could hardly fit on the photo taken before the race!! (to be placed on here soon…). A brilliant effort from all, achieving around mid table over all for Clayton ladies, proving “the more the better”  :-).

Next up is Liverpool at the end of the month. Although a bit of a journey its a good experience with the slightly longer course, lots of mud, flat (apart from one little incline worth a few strides)  and an earlier start to the other Mid Lancs races (check details for times in the news letter).

Hope to see you all there.

Regards Irene

Mid Lancs XC – Towneley Park

The recent weather certainly made for a well prepared cross country course on Saturday at Towneley with plenty of surface water and mud for the competitors. We were lucky on the day itself especially as the wind did not blow as forecast and we had no ground pegs for the tent!

The juniors certainly lead the way with 24 competitors from under 11’s to under under 17’s not far short of the total of seniors who ran on the day!! i cannot think of a time when this has happened previously and only goes to show what a great job Marion,Andrew,Jason and the parents are all doing in encouraging the juniors. Long may it continue.

XC

In the junior section whilst it is totally unfair to single out any particular runners as they all put in such a good effort i would like to mention how well Millie Stubbs did in the under 11’s girls race she certainly had a very determind look at the start of the race and fought really hard to come 5th. In the boys under 15’s Ryan Clarke had a really good run, despite looking behind him for most of it, because he thought he was going to be overtaken by boys who would normally be in front.Who knows where he would come if he looked where he was going! Well done Ryan.

In the seniors races 149 ladies and 302 men competed with Liverpool winning both events. Clayton had 9 ladies running who were lead home by captain Irene,in the mens there were 21 Clayton runners with Spencer Riley coming in as first counter. He was well supported by his fellow clubmates ensuring our first team beat the likes of Blackburn and Preston. Phil Hall also deserves a special mention as not only did he have a good run he was just warming up to run for Clayton again the following day in the Accy 10k. Not only is Andrew Armstrong developing the junior section his additional training is also pushing him up in the results and was pushing Phil all the way. Also thanks to the lads who put Clayton Harriers before Burnley FC at least for 40 minutes, glad you did not miss the goals.

A big thank you must go to Richard and Val Lawson who make this day possible for all and ensure Clayton le Moors Harriers host one of the best Mid Lancs fixtures. We can now all look forward to Liverpool and the opportunity to run against some of the best x country runners in the UK as it is used as a trial  for selection for the European x country championships. Watch the notice boards and face book to arrange lifts etc.
