December’s Festive Roundup

Into December and on toward Christmas and the New Year, the cross-country season rolls on with guest appearances from the fell and road runners around the festive break.

To round off the year, there have been Junior wins, Senior wins, some dodgy fancy dress and a mass takeover of Pendle Hill. Grab a brew and the last of those mince pies and review the final month of the year, hopefully emerging inspired to take on 2018 in similar style.

26 November – Lee Mill Relays

The running around the quarries and moors above Bacup is surprisingly tough and this year’s Lee Mill Relays, a recent and popular fixture on the calendar were made even tougher by proper wintry weather conditions. Clayton fielded 3 teams and Sarah Helliwell reports:

It was a cold and overcast morning as 3 Clayton teams made their way to Stubbylee Park near Bacup. As we parked up, it was obvious it was going to be snowy, frosty and boggy if you ‘stepped or fell’ into the wrong place!

We had 2 ladies teams who braved the conditions and 1 men’s team. The leg 1 runners had a tough start as they had to forge their route through thick snow, hidden tussocks and freezing cold bogs that many of the runners got stuck in! With the odd rain, sleet or snow shower depending what altitude you were running at, creating wintery conditions for the majority of the runners over the 6 mile course. Very tough and definitely character building.

The men can 5th overall with a time of 4.00.58, the team consisting of Carl Helliwell, Luke Turner, Russell Clarke and Chris Snell. Well done lads on some tough conditions.

Both ladies teams put in sterling efforts, with some of the ladies doing the event for the first time. The A team included Tara Robb, Rhiannon Wickham, Alison Dugdale and Jean Brown, with all of them having good runs and coming home as 3rd ladies team with a time of 4:50:37. The B team was a vet 40 team consisting of Angela Shian, Julia Rushton, Teresa De Curtis and Katy Thompson with a time of  6:00:11. A massive well done to all who ran and represented Team Clayton on a very demanding day.

2 December – Red Rose Cross Country League Round 4

Marl Pits. Like Marmite. Some love it, some hate it. Either way there will be always be weapons grade mud at the final Red Rose League fixture and this year didn’t disappoint.

Junior Races

Highlight of the day was Ella Dorrington’s win in the U13G. Using her fell running strength on the hilly and muddy course, she tracked the 3 early leaders, put in the quickest final muddy descent of all of them and outsprinted the final two on the line. Helana White was close behind in 10th.

Robbie Smedley had his usual battle royal with former teammate Dexta Thompson and secured 2nd on the day with teammates Will Nicholls and Finley Stubbs securing 2nd team prize also.

In the U11s Charlie Barnes led the boys home in 27th and Amelia Halstead was 11th in the girls race.

Harrison Codd was first Clayton U15B in 12th and Millie Stubbs led our U15G girls home in 6th. Special mention to Sophie Ashworth who fell and tore ligaments in her ankle – we wish her a speedy recovery.

The U17B were led home by Josh Hall in 7th with Briony Holt our only U17G in 3rd place.

Our Juniors won several awards in the overall 4 race series:

2nd= U13B Robbie Smedley

3rd= U13G Ella Dorrington

3rd U17G Briony Holt

2nd U13B Team

Seniors

Danny Collinge beat the Bog of Doom in the woods to secure a classy win in the Senior race, and backed up by Dave Motley, Tom Brewster, Peter Coates, Matthew Duckworth and Carl Helliwell took 2nd place in the Team race. Our Vet Men performed well too, also taking 2nd Team with Peter Coates, Carl Helliwell, Andrew Holt and Andrew Orr.

In the Ladies, Cassie Darling was 26th (15th Vet too) and with Michelle Abbott and Irene Roche the Vet Women took 6th place in the Team race.

Here’s a report from Vet Andrew Holt:

“Having watched my kids run there, and listening to the more experienced runners at CLEM I knew that the annual Marl Pits mud fest would be to my liking, it was just a case of waiting for my shifts to line up at work.

Following a reasonable night shift on Friday, and with four XC events in my legs already this year I felt I’d be able to do myself justice running it. It felt warmer than before, but was still boggy and the course was cutting up nicely following the earlier kids runs.

I’d half an hour when I arrived, so the choice was either a recce of the course, or a 50p coffee as mine was cooling nicely on the kitchen table where I’d left it. The coffee won!

A quick warm up, pep talk from Briony (grind the hill, walk the bog and ur gonna love it!!) and we were under starters orders. For the first time this season I felt the field pull away from me on the opening lap. I wasn’t concerned as I hadn’t ran this week and didn’t want to blow up later, but was the lack of sleep/training gonna take its toll? The first lap was manic, lots of slipping and sliding, up until the bog where the gaps started appearing and we settled into our running.

I was able to hold the runners around me on the ascents, and gain ground on the downhills and through the numerous hazards. The cheering at the bottom of the hill was excellent, demanding commitment,  and I had the misfortune of a couple of pals from the mountain rescue giving me loads next to the wooden bridge, and any thought of resting was scuppered by coach Phil loitering in the field above the hill. The hills/bridges/bogs took care of themselves, and before I knew it I was on the last lap descending into the finish. I nearly got mugged on the line by one of the BOFRA runners I know (thanks Sarah for the warning) and ran in for my highest position so far this season.

I’m gonna plug my lad Curtis too for finishing this hard hard course despite barely no training and no doubt a hangover. I’m in front of him at the moment but I doubt that’s gonna last very long!

Superb running from everyone, baptism of fire for many. Now onto the flatter courses, starting at Leigh.”

The overall series results for Seniors/Vets included:

4th Vet Women 35-39 Cassie Darling

2nd Vet Women 65-69 Christine Egerton

3rd Vet Women 65-69 Christine Leathley

16 December – Hurst Green Turkey Trot

A fancy dress competition masquerading as a race, the Turkey Trot is always a firm favourite at this time of year. Whilst the fancy dress makes identifying individuals difficult, the results show that Andrew Payne was first Clayton home in 6th and Tara Robb was 7th Lady. It’s hard to do justice to all the fabulous fancy dress efforts that day but Michelle Abbott and Cassie Darling made it ‘Mario-Time!’ with their outfit, backed up by Lennon in his own inimitable style…

24 December – Christmas Eve social up Pendle Hill

Strong winds and clag on the tops didn’t deter a large group of Juniors and Seniors from trekking up Pendle Hill to temporarily claim the trig platform as their own. Our own super-photographer David Belshaw also displayed his amazing time-travelling ability to almost be in two places at once with photos from the fell gate and then photos back in the car park as many of the runners returned. Personally, I think we should get him a vest and get him out racing..

26 December – Whinberry Naze Fell Race

More fancy dress on show here for the fellrunner’s traditional hangover cure on Boxing Day. With a race distance of less than 4 miles but with over 750ft of climb, it’s always a bit of a rude awakening for the slightly befuddled, climbing steeply from the start before a correspondingly fast descent back down. Not before passing the trig and collecting a packet of Smarties from Santa though. Bonus points for those that can eat them on the way down without choking.

No sign of the January blues here at Clayton-le-Moors Harriers! There’s been plenty of great results in cross country, fell racing and on the trails to well and truly blow away the cobwebs. We’ve had new members racing for the first time, returners racing for us again, not to mentions all the regulars and irregulars, out racing and reccying.

Ladies Race

Report from Ladies’ Captain Irene Roche

It must have been close to a record turnout for the ladies at Towneley Park Cross Country this weekend. With lots of regulars, some returners and a few new ladies.

First timers, Karen Clarkin, Geraldine Varley and Julia Taylor had positive comments at the finish. I think they said they will do another. Very well done girls.

PETZL NIGHTRUNNER – RIVINGTON

The snow passed over Rivington a couple of days before race day and left Rivington NightRunner with a lovely, clear night and a little bit of the white stuff on the moor for added grip. With a huge moon lighting the way, Saturday night saw an impressive turnout of crazy runners celebrating the last NightRunner of this series and amongst them two Clayton Ladies. Photos of the event were provided by Sport Sunday.

Report from Julia Rushton

The Petzl Rivington night runner was listed as a trail race; this gave the impression that we would be running on relatively tame footpaths. Wrong! I’ve done easier fell races.

We started the race with a steep mile and a half climb on a rocky cobbled path that was tough on the legs as well as the lungs. We continued on rocky paths that needed total concentration to avoid falls. Running in the dark with a couple of hundred people wearing head torches looked fantastic over the hills and against the rising moon. The downward route took in a boggy field, a marshal warned us to watch out for the big hole before the bridge. I didn’t see the bridge until I’d fallen thigh deep into the hole, a cheery chorus of “she’s found the hole” went up around me as I was pulled out.

Back on the rocky paths to the finish Neri and I had decided to be sensible and came down at what John Roche would describe as tea and biscuits pace. 1300 feet of climb over 6miles on rough ground, back on tarmac and I tripped over a speed hump on the finish straight. Lovely tee shirt though and I will be tempted to be back again next year.

The men also took 1st place in the team results with Danny Collinge, Jon Cleaver and John Hartley making up the team.

Five Clayton Ladies took part. Helen O’Rourke was our first finisher in 71st place.

Report from Jon Cleaver

Great turn out with over 400 runners on a wet and windy morning! This race is predominantly traffic free along the bridleways & canal with a bit of tarmac along the way.  It was never going to be a PB course with the conditions underfoot being more like an XC rather than road, but after a racing layoff due to injury after the Ribble Valley I wanted to give it a good go.

John Cleaver heading to the finish at the East Lancs Hospice 10K. Photo by David Belshaw

On the way out it was really boggy and full of puddles, but once your feet are soaked it doesn’t really matter anymore, about 2.5 miles in you have a slog up hill and around the recreation area before a fast descent back down and along the canal bank towards the finish. I had a couple of runners breathing down my neck for the last 2 miles and quite frustratingly got jumped 50 yards from the end which stopped me getting in the top 10.

Overall I ran a minute faster than last year and came 11th, considering the injury I have been carrying and lack of training in recent weeks I am pretty pleased with that. Well done Danny for taking the win!

LAMB’S LONGER LEG

Race Report from Andrew Firth

It’s a bit of a funny name, and I’m not sure why the Longer Leg, but since the race is based at the Lamb Inn, on the Chinley Road just out of Hayfield in the Peak District clearly that’s where the name comes from. It’s surprisingly quick to get to Hayfield from East Lancs, just under the hour on a Sunday morning when the notorious traffic through Mottram is quiet. It’s only a short race, just over 3 miles, but worth the effort with two climbs and two slippery descents, which in today’s weather was exceptionally wet and difficult underfoot.

It’s a low key race, doesn’t appear in FRA calendar and is also strictly pre entry so it’s tends to attract low numbers. If anyone fancies doing it in future years the entry details appear on Hayfield races website. The organiser only made an appearance at 10 o’clock, cutting it a bit fine for a 10.30 start. However the 70 or so runners lined up at the start only a few minutes late, most wearing waterproof tops.

I had a bit of a watch malfunction at the start, and by the time I sorted it out I was dead last as we trudged up the track. I buckled down to the task and slowly gained a few places, dodging really boggy patches as well as a surprising amount of remaining snowdrifts. At the top of the track you turn onto the track that eventually leads to Rushup Edge for a short period followed by a sharp left and quick slippery descent losing all the height we had gained. Traverse around the bottom of Dimpus Clough before a steep haul up to South Head, then the route virtually retraces the outward leg, except we go right to finish in the field next to the pub.

I was happy with performance having been last at the start. The only other Claytoner was Ivan Whigham who finished 32nd. After the race myself Dinah, Ivan and Kirsty retired to the pub for a well-earned Sunday roast – both myself and Ivan felt compelled to have the lamb, but I’m not sure who got the long leg!

SOREEN STANBURY SPLASH

Seven Clayton Harriers splashed their way around this popular Woodentops’ fell race. Dave Bagot was our first finisher in 15th place, followed only seconds later by Louisa Powell-Smith who won the ladies race and was 16th overall.

Report from James Boult

From Penistone Hill Country Park, the start of many of Woodentops’ well-established fell races, began the 34th Soreen Stanbury Splash fell race in typical January conditions. With a quarry already made boggy by a Junior Race beforehand, a couple of hundred fell runners assembled for the usual pre-run briefing from Dave Woodhead. Rain and wind, two weather conditions that seem to permanently occupy the surrounding areas over Penistone Hill, came in force making an already boggy course saturated in mud.

With many of the Clayton contingent racing the East Lancs Hospice 10K over in Great Harwood, I elected for a trip over the boarder to kick start my racing schedule for 2017. After enduring a torrid winter plagued by injury, the Woodentops’ races have helped get my motivation back after a frustrating few months of inconsistency. From a 2016 which saw forty minutes knocked off my half marathon times to end up at 1:33, ten minutes knocked off my 10K time to go down to 41 minutes and five minutes knocked off my 5K time to see an 18 minute personal best, the only discipline I was yet to see improvement in was fell; and the last two Woodentops’ races have helped me get confidence on an area which had been my downfall.

Starting from the quarry the course heads off along a steady and muddy towpath to one of the courses many descents and climbs. Heading along the footpath towards Bronte Bridge the course heads down right through a soft and muddy descent which ends at the Sladen Beck, an ice cold river which is crossed before a hands and knees job on the other side. Hitting the bridleway you head on up to what becomes the Pennine Way. This gradual climb ends in another sharp descent into Ponden Beck, another water crossing with another even steeper climb at the end of it. Ascending gradually and with burning quads, the lead runners could be spotted through the rain and mist as they flew across the tops back towards the Quarry. The route then heads on what would be a scenic loop around Ponden Clough and Kirk had it not been for a thick mist which limited visibility.

The footpath around the Clough is sharp and small, and with rain and mud it made it quite treacherous. What was visible through the fog was the daunting drop that one wrong movement could see you falling straight down into the unknown. The course then heads back to the quarry across a fast, muddy footpath before re-joining the Pennine Way and taking the course in reverse.

This muddy, wet course is the perfect start to a 2017 fell running season and is one which comes highly recommended for next year. A clearly popular race, the Stanbury Splash is a must for seasoned fell runners and a must for fell runners just starting out or wanting to boost confidence. Tough climbs, fun descents and plenty of mud, it is the perfect fell race for a cold January morning.

STAN BRADSHAW PENDLE ROUND RECCE DAYS

As reported in last week’s roundup, Colin Woolford who is the race organiser of the Stan Bradshaw Pendle Round is organising some recce days for club members and friends of the club. The first one was on Sunday so read on to find out what it entailed. If you are interested in the next recce it will take place on Sunday 12 February at 10:00am. Meet on Barley Car Park ( look for the Red VW Transporter) and bring running kit appropriate for the weather.

Recce Day Review by Ladies Fell Captain, Sarah Helliwell

After not running properly for over 6 weeks I decided that I needed a goal to get me back on track and miles back into my legs. I decided that the Stan Bradshaw would be the first aim of the year, so I decided to take up Colin’s kind offer of a recce. It was raining, the mist was down, you couldn’t see Pendle, however that didn’t stop 15 of us turning up at Barley. As we set off a number of us knew that the XC fixture the day before was going to make the run a little bit tougher for our legs.

Sarah Helliwell at the XC

Sarah Helliwell at the XC

The weather around the trig was blustery, very wet and visibility was poor. Perfect to practice the route in. As we made our way around the route, Colin pointed out bits of advice on how and where not to go wrong. He also gave us advice on how to use our map efficiently and what to do if we end up on our own and are unsure of where to go. If members are wanting a spring challenge of a slightly longer fell race in our local area then this is the one. It will certainly get you going for the summer fell season, where there are plenty of local races to take advantage of. You may even find yourself as a contender for the club championship, which are all local races this year using some classic courses.

Getting to grips with tricky conditons

Getting to grips with tricky conditons

Colin is doing another recce on the 12th February so look out for details on the Team Clayton Facebook page. Even if you are not planning on doing the Stan Bradshaw it is great experience with solid advice from a qualified mountain leader and fellow fell runner. A massive thank you to Colin for giving up his time and well done to all who ran; there was an excellent turn out on the female front. The encouragement to get people out on the fells this year is really apparent, with a good 20 plus regularly turning up at Barley Badgers on a Tuesday (6.30pm Pendle Inn, Barley).

Happy runners after an excellent recce of the Stan Bradshaw Pendle Round.

Spooky shenanigans, speakers and summits

What a spooktacular weekend it was! Lots of fun was had dressing up and racing at the Hurstwood relays helping to raise money for the victims of the Nepal Disaster earlier this year. As well as road racing, fell racing and some far-flung parkrun tourism as always you are a busy bunch.

If you’ve been rejected in the public ballot and wish to go into our draw, please send your rejection letter to John before the 14th.

Guest Speaker Evening

Social Secretary, Marie Greenwood

A big thank you to Denise Park for a wonderful evening. Informative, educational, entertaining (even a bit of Disney thrown in for good measure) what more could we ask for. Plenty of food for thought for our Clayton runners I think – there were quite a lot of ‘oops that’s me expression’ as you were being told what you shouldn’t be doing!

About 30 club members attended this interesting presentation at Padiham Football Club. Denise Parks gave a fascinating and useful talk about injuries and injury prevention for fell, trail and mountain runners drawing on an incredible wealth of experience in the field at the highest level.

Saturday 31 October

 Nepal Trail Relays

Held in the idyllic location of Hurstwood, Pendle and Burnley Grand Prix organisers put on a team relay event to raise money for Nepal. 33 teams took part. The official line was each team should have 1 cyclist, 1 senior runner, 1 vet runner and 1 lady runner. On the day, however, there were a few honorary vets and ladies on the course.

Fancy dress costumes were actively encouraged and both competitors and marshals threw themselves into it, thoroughly embracing the fact that the event was taking place on Halloween.

Some great team names were proffered, personal favourites were Motley Crew, Alice Nutters, Tutu Crew, Team Terrible, Devils and Barlick Bitches.

First leg was a mountain bike race. This was won by Paul Julian. Paul Hesketh finished in 3rd and Elouise Pemberton was one of the few lady riders on this leg.

Second leg was the Vets which was won by our own Mr Tangerine, Breton Holdworth. There were a handful of lady vets also running. Dave Motley was an honorary vet for this leg.

 Race you to the Summit

Report from Martin Brady

This was the 49th running of this race (used to be called the Gale Fell Race). The race started as a bet between two people in the Gale Pub near Littleborough after a long drinking session. One said it was impossible to run to the White House Inn on the road to Ripponden and back within 30 minutes the other said he could do it. The race was run and he broke the 30 minutes.

Next year is the 50th and last running of the race. It is mainly trail running with steeper fell section. Kath and myself decided to do the hilly Parkrun at Watergrove near Wardle and then do the Race You To The Summit which was close by.

I have not seen the results of this yet. but the Clayton runners as far as I remember are:-

 NEWSAR Clwydian Hills Fell Race

The NEWSAR Clwydian Hills Fell Race is held annually and is a 15km race with 3,000ft of ascent, over the Clwydian hills in North Wales, including the summit of Moel Famau.

Report from Peter Browning

The Clwyddian Hills is a hidden gem of a race held on the first Sunday in November from the hilltop village of Cilcain in north east Wales. We had a new course to tackle this year, but 159 runners still crossed some stunningly beautiful countryside made all the better by the unseasonably good weather. The warm sunshine blazing down from a pure blue sky actually left runners with running vest sunburn (yes in November!), on what was as good a running day as any experienced this summer. In the distance, the peaks of Snowdonia could clearly be seen, but Liverpool and Manchester were hidden under the blanket of fog that I am told enveloped East Lancashire for most of the day.

The magical sunshine brought out the full range of autumn colours, and for the record, the 9 mile race with almost 3000 feet of climb was won by Stephen Skates of Prestatyn in 82.58. As the only Clayton competitor, my time was a more modest 114.16 but my 75th place made the top half which is my target these days. It was good to see Clayton old boy Dave Nuttall winning the V50’s in 14th place overall. I reckon this was my 15th Clwyddian Hills race, and as it’s in my top 5 races anywhere, I will keep returning as long as I can.

Peak Raid 2015, Round 2

Report by Katy Thompson

Having had a bit of a disaster at the first 2015 Peak Raid event, when my shoe fell to pieces, I was hoping for a better run in Round 2. Setting off from home in thick fog, it didn’t look very promising, but by the time I got to Glossop the sun was shining and it promised to be a lovely day. Unusually for me, I chose well, didn’t make any navigational errors, and managed to get back within the given time.

The Peak Raid events are ideal for anyone wanting to improve their navigation skills: 3 hour Score events – get to as many checkpoints as you can in the given time. There is a big incentive not to be out too long, as 50 points are lost for every minute over time! You can make it as hard or as easy as you want. It would be good to see more Clayton members at these events. Navigators are always in demand for fell relays. Details are on the Fixtures Calendar or the Fellrunner website.

Katy and George Thompson took part in the inaugural Haigh Woodlands parkrun near wigan.

Katy Thompson reports:

The inaugural Haigh Woodlands Parkrun attracted a field of 199 runners. We set off along a tarmac track, but soon veered off into the woods on muddy paths.   Downhill for nearly 3k then a slightly shorter route back up to the Hall – a fairly familiar route if you have done the Haigh Hall races. Well worth a visit – just a few miles off the M61.

Great Whernside Fell Race

Report from Andrew Walmsley

Heavy rain was forecast for the morning of the race. Just before the start at 11:30 am it had stopped raining, though still looked threatening and promised a cold tailwind to the summit turnaround, so not all bad!

Andrew Walmsley at the Great Whernside Fell Race. Photo by Scott Leach

Before the start Andrew Jebb informed the assembled runners that after organising the race for 25 years Peter Jebb was standing down as race organiser. this being his last race in charge and asked for a round of applause in appreciation of his years of service. This was answered by warm applause from all present. Wharfdale Harriers have taken up the reins for future events.

Peter set us off straight into the steep climb which quickly strung the field out into a long line. I found myself 5th out of 5 clayton starters with Ivan [Whigham ] and Mark [Nutter] already out of sight! Peter [ Dugdale ] and Andy [Firth] were locked in battle 50M ahead, then 80M, steadily pulling away. Being passed by “Sumo”[ Andy Holden ] was a kick up the backside and I began to gain a few places. Through the broken crag above Hag Dyke and onto the marshy ground beyond I picked up a couple more before the leaders began to fly past in the opposite direction, heading for the finish, the first few very close together and pointing to a tight contest, amongst them Victoria Wilkinson of Bingley Harriers looking secure as first lady in this leading group.

By this time Ivan had a clear lead over Mark with Peter and Andy still having a battle that wasn`t resolved until the final steep descent where Andy used his trademark descending skills to open a gap to take 3rd Clayton.

Some way back up the course I was enjoying quite a good descent too picking up a few more places and chasing to the finish to complete the tough but enjoyable outing.

Unofficial times: Ivan Whigham 41.00, Mark Nutter 45.37, Andrew Firth 46.59 Peter Dugdale 47.09, Andrew Walmsley 52.02.

Jedburgh 3 Peaks Ultra & RunFurther Update

Congratulations to Martin Terry, this year’s Runfurther MV50 winner Martin Terry and 6th overall in the competition. Andy Armstrong was 44th and Nicholas Olszewski was 45th. The three of them as a team came 5th. Well done!

At Jedburgh, Martin came in 22nd in 5:58:54 in the Jedburgh 3 Peaks Ultra, and took the race MV50 trophy.

This was the 12th and last of the 2015 Runfurther Championship races, and it really was a belter.  The start location was in Jedburgh. There were marshals and supporters everywhere, and the reception at the finish was quite something, with everyone cheered in by name over the PA as they approached the finish, to a chorus of cheers, yelps and handclaps.

The route has great views, and is mainly very runnable.  It starts with an offroad half-marathon, predominantly on an old Roman road and then along the banks of the River Tweed.  That is followed by a stiff fell race over the Eildon hills, then another half-marathon back, mainly on the same route you came out on.  Conditions were good, despite the poor weather forecast: there was a spell of rain early on, but it soon cleared, and we even had a bit of sun later on.  It was a bit muddy in places, but we’re used to that aren’t we?

Accrington 10K

Hundreds of runners took part in the Accrington 10k road race’s 30th anniversary event. Former Olympian Ron Hill also joined runners for the start of the race but nfortunately due to injury he was only able to do a couple of miles before he had to retire.

Starting out on Burnley Road by the Whitakers Arms pub, the race takes on a challenging 10-kilometre course, which winds through Huncoat and Clayton-le-Moors before finishing at Accrington Cricket Club on Thorneyholme Road.

18 Clayton-le-Moors Harriers took part in this popular local 10K road race. Matthew Duckworth was our first finisher taking 5th place overall in a time of 38:28. Phil Hall followed not long after in 8th place and with a time of 39:01. Stephen Hall was our third finisher in 15th place with a time of 40:10. These three made up the 1st place mens team so well done to all three!

Our first lady was Fabienne Richmond who was fourth lady finisher with a time of 43:47.

Matthew Duckworth Reports

For me it was a no brainier to run this as soon as l so the route, as it take us through our namesake. It was a fantastic race that was well marshalled and very well supported, which was a very big boost on the 2 mile long hill coming out of Altham. It was a good result for the club winning the male team prize and on a personal note a great achievement for me after running my first XC the day before, I wasn’t expecting such a good result!

Andy Bradley reports

Third year running for one of my favourite races the Bronte Way, perfect running weather and plenty of familiar faces at the Aisled Barn at Wycoller. An unusual one way race which needs a bit of organisation in order to get to the start at Wycoller and back from the finish at Howarth, (the coach has to be booked well in advance), the number of runners asking for lifts back suggests that not everyone had thought this through! Just short of 8 miles of fell and trail over the moor tops makes for a great run, especially when there is no rain and hail en route. A quick dash up the final cobbled street, hand over your beer token for a pint of Timothy Taylors and a post mortem on the race with fellow runners, what could be better? Oh yes a chip butty on the way home, love this race!!

Report from Paul Walsh

This was a friendly well organised, well marshalled event, with plenty of encouragement from them. It was a cold day and the course is a mostly rural figure of 8 with a few shallow climbs. Goody bag at finish included a banana, apple, kit-kat, bottle of water & a red Thornton-in-Cleveleys running drinks bottle (can’t take that to Training nights!!..ha-ha) In summary, a very friendly well organised race, made better by me getting my V60 5k PB down to 25:03

Not a race at all but a social event. A 9.4 mile up and down the prom run with a chippy treat at the end. Sounds like great fun and maybe something we can all join in with next year? Ian Hargreaves and junior runners Aaron Lundie and Adam Stevenson all went along with a number of fellow runners from Burnley parkrun. It was the furthest Adam has ever run so very well done! Relays, Road Races and Romance

Running relays on the roads and in the mountains, tearing up trail races, going long distance in ultra races, winning 10k races and fun runs. As always you are a busy bunch. Race wins, our best performance in the mountain relays for 10 years with a talented young team, and a strong presence at the National Road Relays. The future is most definitely bright!

Some Club Announcements

Junior Training – The juniors could do with some help this Thursday, we need 3-4 extra helpers if anyone’s free. It’s a 6pm start from Spirit of Sport, next to the fire station in Burnley. You won’t need to coach or do anything complicated, just run along with the group and be an extra pair of hands if needed. Contact Andy Armstrong if you can help.

Virgin London Marathon –  If any member out there has had their application for London rejected and wants to be entered into the ballot for a club place, please send your rejection letter to the club secretary, John Wilcock. If successful, you will still need to pay the normal entry fee to VLM.

Clayton Harriers Social Evening with Guest Speaker Denise Park
On Friday 30th October we are holding a social evening at Padiham Football Club, at which the highly respected physio Denise Park will be attending to give a talk / questions and answers session on the Recognition and Prevention of Running Injuries.

The evening is aimed at all levels of runners – from beginners to experienced, from young to old. I’m sure all our running members – whether still competing or now just running socially / training could benefit from the pearls of wisdom that Denise can pass on, that maybe the difference between a good winter season of training and a miserable (and grumpy) winter season!

The evening starts at 8.00pm with a small cost of £2.00 per person – payable on the night
Can you please let me know if you plan to attend by emailing me at mgreenwood1969@outlook.com, ringing me on 01254 237485, or by posting a message on the Clayton Facebook page – just so we have an idea of numbers.

Coniston Trail Races

Club member David Black was our sole representative at this 15km trail race in the Lake District. He finished in 91st place with a time of 1:19:33.

216 runners took part in this race which the organisers, Lakeland Trails, describe as following circuits along well marked and marshalled footpaths and bridleways, taking in panoramic views of Lake Coniston and the surrounding peaks of the Old Man, Swirl How, Wetherlam and Dow Crags. Underfoot conditions are generally good for those used to off road running, although there is one short 200m section after approx 4km on the 15km routes which only agile mountain goats will be able to run!

Claire Vincent leg 2 head it well for us. Leg 3 was myself; I pushed as hard as I could, out of my comfort zone! Then handed the last leg to my little sister, Helena to pull back any places I lost! Rivington Trail Half Marathon

Six club members took part in this popular trail half marathon taking in Rivington, Yarrow and Anglezark reservoirs and White Coppice on a scenic route.

Our first finisher was Andy Bradly, who sends this report;

Perfect running conditions, if a little misty to enjoy the views on Saturday. I was joined at the start by 5 other Clayton members a quick chat and off! Nice undulating course no real killer hills and good underfoot. Managed to be about 30 secs slower than last year but it was my first race as a V50! Highlight of the event was seeing the Burnetts cross the line together it must be love if you can get a half marathon entry as an anniversary present and finish together smiling, surely there was a heated debate somewhere on the way round! Recommended event, hope to do it again next year with a bit more orange on display.

Team Clayton

L-R Rachel Todd, Michelle Butschok, Helen Burnett and Dave Burnett at the Rivington Trail Half Marathon.

Romance was in the air as Helen and Dave Burnett were running the event to celebrate their wedding anniversary. Ahh… this is what Helen had to say;

Following on from Hendon Brook and GNR training Michelle suggested that we do a half marathon off road and the Rivington Trail Half seemed a good choice. As it was mine and Dave’s wedding anniversary and his first half marathon we decided to run together.

The four of us travelled together cursing Michelle for what seemed like a bad idea at that point, after such an early foggy start. At the start we met up with fellow Claytoners Andy Bradley and Martin Griffin. Andy was returning for his second year and gave us some pointers about the route (where to expect the hills).

The route has a good 1 mile climb at the beginning and short climb just after mile 10 but apart from that was a lovely route meandering through woodland and trails and round the edges of the reservoirs.

Dave and I ran the route together managing not to bicker and the old romantic held my hand for the sprint finish across the line.

It was a well organised event and all finishers got a T shirt and goodie bag so it made the entry fee good value. We were all on a high at the end, pleased with our performances and now praising Michelle for her choice!

The relay is in memory of Ian Hodgson, who at the aged 25 was tragically killed in a road accident whilst cycling the day after winning the score class at the Karrimor Mountain Marathon in 1985. Prior to the presentation Jon Broxap, from the organising team announced that Ian’s brother, Michael (57) had suffered a cardiac arrest whilst out cycling in August and never regain consciousness. The family and organised team had decided to rename the relay The Hodgson Brothers Relay.

Our A team finished in 18th position with an overall time of: 4:14:12. Our Vet team finished in 38th place with an overall time of 4:47:33. The Clayton ‘Z’ team were 55th with a time of 5:13:35. Our ladies team were 68th overall with a time of 5:27:33. Only 10 ladies teams took part and our ladies were 8th.

Ladies Fell Captain Kath Brady reports

We finished 8th out of 10 extremely competitive ladies teams, in a time of 5 hours 27 minutes, 19 minutes quicker than 2014

1 Linda Lord & Katy Thompson 56.05

2 Wendy Dodds & Avril Duckworth 1.36:56

3 Alison Dugdale & Anna Kelly 1.15:47

4 Jean Brown & Claire Vincent 1.38:45

Thanks must go to Jean Brown who did all the hard work in pulling the team together. I just collected and handed out numbers on the day. Thanks to all 8 ladies for racing hard. Special note must go to Claire Vincent running strong on the last leg with Jean in her first ever race in the lakes.

Men’s Fell Captain Dave Motley Reports

Alarms were off early for the drive to the Lakes, registration and at 9:15am its GO GO GO!. The lads had a really good start with Jordan Mcdonald and Jonny Mckenna bringing the team home in 7th. Next up Danny & Dave Bagot who completed the leg with no navigational issues but they did finish one buff down (I’ll let Danny tell that story ). Me & Lee Smith next and we had a solid run to pass the baton onto Chris & Jacob who brought the team home in 18th place. The vets finished in 38th (8th Vets) which was fantastic performance with the problems I had sorting the team.

Looking at the results I am reliable informed that the A team posted the quickest Clayton time for 10 years, which is a massive positive and the majority of the team were under 25! This really shows the progression of the club in the last couple of years.

I’d like to say a massive Thanks to all the lads but special Thanks goes to Sean Clare & Geoff Gough we were called up on 48hr notice due to injuries in the vets team. Cheers boys and here’s to an even quicker time in 2016!!!

Dominic Carr, Vets Team report

It was cool with a chill in the air before the start of leg 1 of the Ian Hogson mountain relay. Nerves were starting to jangle. We had a last minute drop out for the leg 1 vets team; Andy McFarlane, hamstring, and I was to run with club legend Geoff Gough. He’d been out injured for a while, but class is class so I was worried about keeping up. As usual the nerves went when we set off, and I managed to set the pace which was good. A fast first mile left me wishing for a steeper gradient and my wish soon came true, as me and Geoff traded places back and forth with Rossendales Mick Toman. The recce paid off as I was able to pick the better of the lines as the file of runners in front invariably split in places with route choice up to individual teams.

Dominic Carr and Geoff Gough (No. 19) at the Hodgson Brothers Mountain Relay

We made the first Checkpoint in 27 mins, and had boxed off most of the climb, with a very steep grassy descent to come, which didn’t disappoint. Final Checkpoint at the bottom and a very fast run in on metalled cart track where me and Geoff really dropped the hammer and picked off a couple of teams. We finished fizzing with adrenaline and (for me) relief we acquitted ourselves okay. 3 year in the making running ambition ticked off; nothing else beats running in the lakes and I’ve always wanted to do the Ian Hogson. Hope I make next year’s squad now!! Placed 35th out of 70 teams and 46:35.

Kings of the castle

Another week of success!  Kings of Lancaster Castle 10K and Half Marathon. Winner of the OMM Lite. Part of team GB at the World Mountain Running Championships. And not forgetting team competition at the Northern Road Relays, 10Ks galore, Lakeland & Yorkshire Fells and parkruns. There’s just no stopping us!

Tuesday 15 September

Club Handicap Race
The race was based on last week’s Coppice Race (the last of the Summer Series). In effect the last runner in the race sets off first on a zero time and then the rest of the field set off on the time difference achieved last week – in other words last week’s winner sets off last on a time difference equal to that achieved last week – so Alan Life won last week and was 24 minutes 20 seconds in front of Sue Allen. In theory all the runners should cross the finish line on the same time.

Ladies 4-Stage Races

Report from Ladies Captain, Angela Shian

Clayton had 12 lady runners compete at a sunny Stanley Park on Saturday. It was so hot we even had to take off our renowned orange hoodies…! We had a few nerves in the 3 teams, as most or our runners had not competed in relays of this kind before! A special well done to leg 1 ladies; Laura, Amanda & Elouise, as this is by far the most nerve racking stage.

Clayton Ladies at the Northern Road Relays

Clayton Ladies at the Northern Road Relays

We did have a marshal trip up one of our competitors – Bianca Bennett (I wont repeat her language at the end!!!). Unbelievably, we were also told off for the noise volume of “cheering” our ladies in (Rachel Todd).

There were 62 teams competing in total – Our first Team came 23rd which now qualifies us for the National road relays championships at Birmingham! Team 2 came 44th position, and Team 3 came 57th position. All in all cracking day and effort by the ladies, roll on next year!

Mens 6-Stage Races

Report From Chris Holdsworth

The improvements made between 2014 and 2015 6-Stage Road Relays has been excellent. Having raced at both, it was great to be able to see our teams compete for places throughout the day.

I had a poor personal performance having been too eager to get us off to a good start, but the rest of the lads were able to keep our position with some solid performances throughout.

Finishing the day in 31st place, we narrowly missed out on qualifying for the National relays having fallen out of the top 25 requirement.

However, on another day I believe we’d have had enough quality to qualify which is very encouraging. With an improvement of over 50 places from 2014, I’m sure we’ll continue that trend in to 2016 and beyond!

OMM Lite

Congratulations to Ralph Baines on his win over the weekend at the OMM Lite Long Score event- Reeth, Swaledale

Report from Ralph Baines

Ralph Baines WInner of the OMM Lite Long Score event.

Ralph Baines at the OMM Lite.

Having done a few Orienteering score events this year and really enjoyed them I was asked by my brother-in-law Barry to partner him on this. It was a two-day score event, 7 hours on Saturday north of the river and 5 hours Sunday south, but without the usual OMM overnight camp and carrying your tent/food etc.

It was beautiful weather and a good selection of people doing both the mountain biking and orienteering. We spent a good 5 minutes marking the scores on the map and deciding which route to set off on, this turned out to be time well spent since through the weekend we managed to get lots of the high value checkpoints. After about 5 hours I was, as usual, starting to get really tired and the cramp kicked in but plenty of determination and encouragement from Barry got us to the finish where I could have a sit down and be served tea and cake in the sunshine, and be unable to get out of the chair for 20 minutes! The pain was eased by the fact we were winning, if only by 10 points. I texted my wife Naomi to tell here the good news but with the caveat that there wasn’t a hope in Christmas of us holding the place for the following day.

Day 2 and a large bacon sandwich, to replace some lost salt, and lots of tea just before being first to set off worked a treat and didn’t feel too bad after we had done the climb up to Grinton Lodge YHA and got onto the beatiful grouse moors up there. Lots more points came and the time seemed to pass much quicker albeit I did feel slower still. Anyway we got 22 miles in which I was more than impressed with and we had to sit and wait for an hour to see who beat us. Nobody did, we were second on the day and extended our lead so got to go and receive the prizes, one for overall winners and one for the vets. So after 25 years running it has taken until now for my first win. Thanks to Barry for encouraging me round.

World Mountain Running Championships

Well done to Jacob Boyle who competed in the Bronze medal winning, junior GB men’s team at this prestigious event. He reports;

Wow what a hectic couple of days. Down at the World Mountain Running Championships and met all the squad getting to know them before the event. Met some amazing people and made some great friends. The race didn’t go how I wanted to but I can now go away and train even harder. Was really proud to represent Great Britain. My team mates did absolutely amazing helping us become the bronze medalists for the worlds. So inspiring to see some of the team getting individual medals and great news at the fact we all came away with a World Championship medal. Well done team GB. Hope to see you all soon

Report from Sarah Helliwell

Carl was either 15th or 16th out of 51 runners. He went hard and managed to keep up with the front runners on the way up, however the Lakeland lads showed their skill on the way back down, as he lost roughly 4 or 5 places. This was his first Lakeland fell race and it was a steep sharp nasty one of just under 700m of climbing, then descending in 4.5miles. He said the brief 5 seconds he had to admire the view was pretty impressive. He thoroughly enjoyed it and is hoping to do some more Lakeland fell races.

Lancaster Castle 10k

Report from Dan Balshaw

After the 6 Leg relays, and a moment of madness, I turned up for the Lancaster Castle 10k; an out and back course finishing with a nasty little hill, before the finish line in the castle grounds. When I went to pay my fees and get my number I was directed into the old prison which has got to be the strangest place I’ve ever seen a race registration.

When the race started along with the Half Marathon, I somehow managed to create a lead from the off and after hitting 5k in 17m20 I was a bit surprised that no one had come with me. At the turning point I had a good 30 seconds over 2nd place (who’d also done the relays), and tried to make more of this only to literally run into someone coming the other way. Despite my efforts of shouting and letting people know I was coming, one headphone-wearing runner got in the way. I managed to get going again and claim the win finishing 50 seconds ahead of 2nd and was one slow cooker better off. It was a good day for Clayton, with Richard Stevenson winning the Half Marathon and a Microwave.

At that point I found myself at the front with another runner so took it steady and stuck with the planned pace and soon found myself pulling away.Tried to keep it steady and not panic and the plan worked perfectly all the way back to the finish.

Parkrun roundup

Looks like we stayed pretty local this week as far as parkruns go; perhaps because of all the other events many of you took part in over the weekend. A big turn out as usual at Burnley with plenty of PBs and top ten finishes. Well done to Dexta who continues to improve and push for faster times – and he’s only 9! Lots of good runs from the juniors who are getting ready for the cross country season that kicks off next week. There was a trio of first time visits to the Witton parkrun and a trio of returners producing more PBs and great placings.

Sad News – Michael Wrigley 1944 – 2015

Martin Brady writes;

I was sorry to hear the sad news about the death of Michael Wrigley. He was a true member of Clayton-le-Moors Harriers and always wanted the best for the club. I remember racing with him in the early 80’s when he regularly would do sub 60 minutes for 10 miles. He was easy to identify then with his green and white celtic style top under his Clayton vest. When he became unable to run he could be seen at many local races supporing the club e.g. Hendon Brook, Three Peaks etc. When my brother died in 1986 aged 23 he was one of the people who carried his coffin. Rest in peace Mick.

His funeral will take place on Friday, 25th September, at 2:20pm at Burnley Crematorium and after at the Rosegrove Club. No flowers and donations to Friends of Marsden Park.

Report from Richard Stevenson

We pitched up at the campsite in Tywyn, North Wales, on the Friday evening ready for the 32nd annual Race the Train event on the Saturday where you race the steam train of the Talyllyn Railway on its journey to Abergynolwyn and back. The event is described as multi-terrain where the course uses a mixture of public roads, lanes, unmettalled roads, track and agricultural land which run alongside the track .

There are 4 different races throughout the day of varying distances from 3 miles to the main Rotary Challenge of 14 miles where runners have 1hr and 48 mins to beat the train back to town centre.

We awoke on Saturday to lovely sunshine so we set off into town for the shorter distance races with Clayton junior members Lucy, Adam, Keira and Rachel taking part in the 3 mile Tynllwynhen race. They all put in a great effort across a very tough hilly course with a knee deep stream crossing. The kids loved it and were very impressed with the contents of their goody bags!

After a little rest it was time to take my place at the start line on the railway bridge above the station. I took part in the Rotary Challenge in 2013 and missed out on beating the train by 50 seconds so this was a revenge mission and the pressure was on!

The race takes you out of the town over fields, rough pasture, and farm tracks all the way to the turn point 7 miles in at Abergoynolwyn station. This I knew had been the easy part of the course and, on checking my watch, I knew I was doing well.

After turning around the station you now climbed very steeply to run across the face of the hillside on narrow sheep tracks for over a mile. Once past the summit the course levels off for a short way before leaving the road and plunging down a very narrow path. You then have to negotiate footbridges, steep steps, bogs and small streams before reaching open fields with about 3 miles to go. I was still feeling strong and knew that barring disasters I was going to beat the train.

With 1 mile to go you join the public road heading for the finish in Tywyn. By now I was well ahead of the train and could soak up the great atmosphere in the town for the finish.

Finished; and one train well and truly beaten! Time 1:39:59. 14 minutes ahead of the train in a position of 39th.

I cannot recommend this race highly enough, a great weekend away with the family at an event where the whole town get involved and cheer on the runners.

As I can’t afford a bike for the proper mid life crisis (road or motor), I decided to indulge my love of running and the outdoors by completing my 43rd race since my 39th birthday, thus completing my ’40 before I’m 40’ in style up the Old Man of Coniston fell race from Torver. 1 hr 32, 33rd from 43.

Well done Colin!

Sedburgh Hills Fell Race

Report from Peter Browning

A bright, clear and mostly still day for the 14 miles Sedburgh Hills race saw three Clayton members take on the challenge of over 6000 feet of grassy climbing through the quiet Howgill Fells. Richard Briscoe, Jean Brown and Peter Browning were among the 125 runners who set off on the long first climb up Arant Haw to be met there by fellow Claytonner, Graham Eccles, who was the summit checkpoint marshal. Richard and Jean soon pulled away from me as I struggled to get going properly, but I always felt that if I kept at it, I would start to peg them back. Andy Firth’s Borrowdale report, where he mentioned that if he just kept going he would catch Richard came to mind. Poor Richard, Andy’s words might haunt him for many years to come!

As it turned out, I didn’t see Jean again until I crossed the finish line eleven minutes behind her! She had a superb run, finishing second lady, just two minutes behind long distance record breaker, Nicky Spinks of Dark Peak. Jean was a little disappointed however: 10 seconds faster and she would have beaten the three hour mark!

Once into the race proper, I managed to grind out the miles in my usual style and sure enough caught and passed Richard at the top of the climb that leads to the Calf checkpoint. He professed to be knackered at that point but was well on course to beat his target of three and a half hours.

The steep descent from the last checkpoint on the top of the summit of Winder that overlooks the town of Sedburgh followed by a short road run back to the finish saw all three of us finished in very respectable times and places as follows:

  1. Joe Symonds 2:13:40
    36. Nicky Spinks                2:56:29
    40. Jean Brown                  3:00:09
    55. Peter Browning        3:11:44
    63. Richard Briscoe        3:17:14
