Durisdeer Fell Race 2015 & The Rest of the Week’s Action

Durisdeer Fell Race 2015

“We started outside the village church, with a mad dash through the parking field, and over a stream onto the hill – about a mile and a half of it to Black Hill, gaining about 300m which was immediately lost in a knee wrenching descent…”

Durisdeer is a tiny hamlet in the Southern Uplands, about 3 hours up the motorway from home. The annual fell race (9.5m/4000′) usually attracts about 30 runners, but this year 268 competitors gathered for the second British Championship race of the year.

Friday had been the hottest day of the year so far, but luckily the temperature had dropped with a light but cooling breeze. Linda and Pete Lord were up in Scotland for the week, so Wendy, Jean and I travelled up together, arriving to find ourselves parked next to an injured Jon Sharples. Jon was chauffeuring Gwilym Williams, former Clayton newsletter editor, over from Austria – the only Clayton man to race, and the one who was the furthest from home!

Screen Shot 2015-06-15 at 21.24.03

We started outside the village church, with a mad dash through the parking field, and over a stream onto the hill – about a mile and a half of it to Black Hill, gaining about 300m which was immediately lost in a knee wrenching descent. After smiling for Pete’s camera before crossing the road, there was a more gradual climb to the third checkpoint, remembering to shout “Happy 70th birthday,” to the organiser’s mother, Jessie. Back across the road, with support from Pete again, then a long climb up to Well Hill, the highest point on the race. One more short climb back up to Black Hill then a fast grassy run down to the finish, just spoilt by the short but steep pull up through the parking field.

Screen Shot 2015-06-15 at 21.24.30

There was no need for anyone to go hungry after the race; the village ladies were all set to feed the 5000 – and we were feeding the midges. Despite the midges, we stayed for the presentation where Wendy, Linda and I were all awarded prizes as the first three LV60s. Jean was 22nd lady and 7th LV40, despite still recovering from her record breaking Old County Tops run and a 50m race on the mountains round Lake Annecy a couple of weeks ago. Gwilym found a new friend to run round with – Jean Robson, a former Clayton member now living in Scotland.

The Southern Uplands are lovely grassy rolling hills, well worth a visit. If the Scottish race in the British Champs is in that area next year, let’s hope more runners can see their way to travelling there – not that much further than Keswick or Wasdale.

In an excellent contest between two of Clayton’s best talents, Danny Collinge managed to pip new member Joshua Boyle in this tough 5 mile fell race. This will be the first of many exciting battle’s between the two young Harriers, and I look forward to seeing them contents for the win once again in the future.

Jackson Mckay eased to the win comfortably and effortlessly in the junior race. He was followed shortly by Dexta Thompson in second place in a fantastic time, managing under the 20 minute mark. Third Place went to Natasha Olszewska, whilst forth went to Ella Dorrington. All the juniors showed great promise and the determination to succeed was clear to see through-out.

Weets Fell Race 2015

11351136_10155715857050154_8476405154445354423_n

In this week’s Pendle & Burnley Grand Prix fixture, it was a return to the toughest fell race on the calendar in “Weets”. Overall we had 34 runners compete, and I can now slowly feel my Fell Palladium Trophy slip away as I see so many super efforts each week.

Not least of all in Jordan McDonald, who continues to light up the P&B Grand Prix and is in excellent form right now – long may it continue! Full results below.

The Rings Of Shap 2015

In a race that only psychopaths will enter, runners get to choose how many “rings”, or more appropriately, circles of hell they’d like to travel around. Martin Terry finished third, choosing to race along all three rings! Nick Olszewski, slightly less unhinged decided to tackle two rings, finishing in 6th place overall. A fantastic effort from both men!

South Downs Way 100 – (Results to be found here soon)

Simon Halliday, another runner with a vendetta against his own legs, competed at the South Downs Way 100. Although results are yet to be released, Simon finished in a total time of 19:17:21 (according to his Strava results) – Absolutely brilliant effort Simon!! Full results to follow shortly.
In yet ANOTHER endurance event this week, Julia Rushton and Nerina Gill competed at the famous Mizuno Endure 24.
Report from Julia Rushton
This weekend I ran my first proper endurance event, Endure24, what was I thinking of when I signed up!! Neri and I had a plan, 50miles for me and 50+ for Neri.
On paper it was only 10hrs running in 24hrs, how hard can it be? Once we got there the atmosphere was brilliant, think Glastonbury for runners, tents, vans and caravans covered two big field. Music, food and drink. We set off at midday on Saturday. My plan was to run the 5mile laps in decreasing sets 4, 3, 2, 1 and I stuck to it forgetting that the furthest I’ve run this year was 16miles and my first set was 20miles.
The 7th lap was the hardest thing I’ve ever done and I gratefully whimpered into bed for a few hours. Neri got up bright and early and was about to aim for 60miles till she heard someone point out it was just short of 100km. Never one to avoid a challenge off she went and clocked up 65miles.
I stuck to my target and on my last lap I walked round taking in the atmosphere, enjoying the woodland surroundings and music filtering through the trees. I was so chilled I almost missed the time and had to run to the finish to beat the midday klaxon. The marshals and support was brilliant, many shouts of “Go Solo” and “well done Clayton Ladies” Will we do it again? You bet we will, planning already underway.

Briony Holt continues to excel in the BOFRA races, becoming one of Clayton’s brightest stars in doing so. Also, its clear one of our bravest as I’ve seen many our more seasoned “fell runners” struggle down descents more gingerly compared to this shot from Briony!!

Another great running day with Clayton Le Moors Harriers. At Hawkswick dash today, the 4th race of the series, briony came 1st girl. An amazing race, good conditions, a steep uphill, with.a scramble at the top, but overall an enjoyable race. Well done Jackson who also raced with an amazing result of 4th place.

Parks, pikes, poles and proms

Another action-packed week.  Plenty of our members taking part in all kinds of events from 5ks to Ultras. We’ve won parkrun awards, ultra distance events and super steep fell races. Phew! I am feeling quite exhausted just from writing it all down!

Paddy’s Pole Fell Race – Tuesday 2 June

There was a great turnout of Clayton-le-Moors Harriers for this midweek, 3.7 mile race with 1102ft of ascent at Fell Foot near Chipping. With 20 members running we were able to field both a men’s and a women’s team. The men finished as third team overall but the ladies were in first place. Well done ladies. Linda Lord was also first FV60.

Darren Rushton reports:

It’s 17 years since I last did this race and it’s only 18 miles down the road. There’s no official venue, just the road at the bottom of the fell. It’s easy enough to find with sat navs, and directions on paper. We got to Chipping in good time but where is the road we go up? We pass a few cars with runners in them and we turn straight onto a private farm – big iron gates – oh dear! Quick U-turn on the grass and try again. Finally we find a marshal who directs us to the right place. It’s 7.00pm and we make a makeshift toilet with car doors and then it’s off to the start with 2 minutes to spare, everyone ready to get cracking.

Next minute a loud start rings out and we are off. 20 yards up tarmac, lung busting oxygen debt kicks in and I begin to ask myself what the hell I am doing here along with my friends from the club as this was our warm up. Kicks right onto fell with a nice scramble to the top, a free for all to the top and then it levels off. Ah, nice. I can see runners ahead going up the side of the wall to another massive fell in the distance. I’m thinking I should have stopped at home. Luckily after the wall the route switches back with tremendous views all the way to the Irish Sea and beyond. Not one club mate in sight at this stage so I keep going having never recovered from the lung busting start. The track drops down then a steady climb out to the final descent where you can test your legs.

I spot a few Clayton members, but I have no answer, my ass has been kicked! A pint of coke at the longest presentation followed by a pleasant drive home with my buddies. A cracking little race.

Astley Park Trail Series – Wednesday 3 June

This was the second race in this popular series held in Astley Park, Chorley. A number of our junior members attended the first race in May but with this race being one of their club summer race series, there was a very good turnout of 20 junior members.

DSC_0042

The start of this race is a bit of a squeeze and there was a little bit of shuffling around as everyone jostled to get into a good starting position. This is a fast and furious race and with ages ranging from U7s to teens, there can be a fair bit of tussling and rough stuff at times.

DSC_0060

Curtis was our first finisher finishing in second place overall. Top twenty positions followed quickly for Thomas Bradley, Jackson McKay, Briony Holt and Simon Wilshaw. Briony was also the first girl, so very well done to her. Jenson Bentham was the first finisher in his age group.

DSC_0073

There were some great performances all round. A special mention for Natasha who fell, and despite being trampled by the other runners, got up and finished the race.

Badger 10K Race – Thursday 4 June

This race takes place in the Cuerden Valley Country Park and is described as undulating within the confines of the park with one crossing of a road out and back.

Five Harriers took part. Nick Roscoe was our first finisher in 29th place with a time of 46:43. Ron Chappell was the first V65.

Martin Brady reports; “I had not run the Badger 10K trail race at Cuerden Valley Country Park since 2007 and I had forgotten what a good race it is. There are a few little hills in it (none steep) and some long flat stretches. There were five Clayton runners and it would be great to see some more at the next race on Thursday 2nd July.”

Calderdale Way Ultra – Saturday 6 June

Congratulations to Christopher Holdsworth for his win at the 28 mile Calderdale Way Ultra organised by Cannonball Events.  Christopher ran for the Run4Nepal charity to help raise money for the victims of the recent earthquakes in Nepal.

Report From Christopher Holdsworth

Originally I was supposed to be racing the event with Breton, but a dodgy knee ruled a first ever Holdsworth pairing out until another day. I decided to change to a solo entry though I was relying on Breton for the first 10 miles of the route, as he knew it well from racing in the Calderdale Way Relays.

With this in mind, I decided to keep close to the front runner to guide me round. Myself and the eventual 2nd place runner, Ed Hyland, kept each other going through the whole race and with enough energy still in my legs, I just managed to push ahead with a mile to go, finishing 1st in 3 hours 54 minutes.

It really is one of the best routes for running, squeezing in all the possible sights, hills and terrain you could fit into 28 miles. Cannonball Events put on a great race, though with how my legs are feeling, I don’t think I’ll be graduating to their 50 mile option any time soon!

Kelbrook FR – Saturday 6 June

There was another large turnout of Clayton-le-Moors Harriers for the 5th race in the Pendle and Burnley Grand Prix series.

Kelbrook

This race was first organised by Rev Andrew Proctor, the vicar of Kelbrook Parish Church in conjunction with a garden party held in the grounds of the vicarage, with the profits going towards church finances. Later, the race became part of the Pendle & Burnley Grand Prix with a consequential increase in the numbers taking part and the vicarage garden party gave way to Kelbrook Gala.  The original race route went up Waterloo Road and on to Cob Lane before heading out on to the fells, but a new route was introduced in 2003 which took out the road sections and made the race trail and fell only. Part of the race is over private land, so cannot be reccied before the race.

Jeffrey Pickup was 1st M60 and Barry Mitchell was 1st M65. Our first lady, and first lady finisher of the race, Clayton Harrier was Claire Vincent.  Irene Roche was 1st W55 and Karin Goss was 1st W65.

Pen-y-ghent Fell Race – Saturday 6 June

Seven club members took part in the Pen-y-ghent fell race in the Yorkshire Dales.  Settle Harriers organise the annual Pen-y-ghent fell race (AS, 5.5m, 1650ft)  in the first week in June in association with the Horton-in-Ribblesdale gala. This is an ideal venue for families to attend a race before midsummer Gala fatigue sets in.

Katy Thompson Reports;

With forecasts of gale force winds I wasn’t sure Pen-y-ghent was a good idea, but George seemed keen to cycle up – with a tail wind – so off I set. The wind didn’t seem too bad as we ran through the village, and it blew us up towards the summit, getting stronger and stronger as we climbed. It was hard to keep on my feet at the top and I was hoping that the wind would be behind again as we ran off the top – but no such luck. With the wind trying to blow me back up the hill and the dust in my eyes it was a relief to reach the comparative calm of the Finger Post. I was glad the route to Hull Pot was flagged as the runners were well spaced out (in more ways than one!) and the rest of the race was a battle into the wind. There was slight respite on the climb to Whitber Hill then it was downhill on grass, track and road back to the gala field. Thanks to the marshals and well done to everyone who ran.

Wharfedale Half Marathon – Saturday 6 June

Well done Vicky Heys and Angela Shian who took part in the Wharfedale half marathon which is described as a great day out in some of Wharfedale’s finest scenery with over 2,000 feet of ascents the route follows well established footpaths, including the Dalesway and Mastiles Lane taking in the fabulous scenery.

Angela Shian reported; “A total of just 2 Clayton Hariers raced this one, myself and Vicky Heys. We had a fine day but battled against super strong winds for probaby 10 miles of it! Taking our breath away and our conversation at times (hard to believe) it was a lovely runnable route, a lot of gradual hill climbing along the way. Hardest part was 1 mile of tarmac finish!!! Would recommend this trail race, but just check weather forecast for wind strength next time!”

Vicky McKay (Jackson’s Mum) reports;  “The juniors did great today. Briony comfortably got top spot. While Liberty must have overtaken a few across the top to get a better position. Jaxx and Dexter ran brilliantly both their uphills were really steady picking off people. The descent was really hard and rocky underfoot. Jaxx got 4th boy. Kady put in a really strong performance. Great race in beautiful spot. Well done guys”

Morecambe 10k – Sunday 7 June

218 runners took part in the Superbowl Morecambe 10k race.  Starting and finishing on the Promenade this seaside race provides a good course coupled with lovely views across the famous Bay.A fast opening section follows the promenade towards Heysham taking a slip way into and around Heysham Village before looping back onto Morecambe Promenade for a fast finish.

Three of our club members took part.

Amanda Duffy reports;

When we arrived in Morecambe we had a little drive around the course. I thought it would be flat but there was a couple of hills at the Heysham end and there was a bit of a headwind! So I decided instead of going out too fast to take it easy for the first few k, then pick it up on the way back. Think I will stick to this tactic as I surprised myself and came home with a PB nearly one minute faster! Overall a great race and a nice medal to finish.

Morecambe Fun Run – Sunday 7 June

Well done to Jack McGuire who came 3rd with a time of 07:26

Parkrun roundup

Burnley parkrun celebrated it’s 3 year anniversary with a very well attended event with many runners wearing fancy dress for the occasion. As usual there was a very big attendance from many of our club members and a handful of PBs as well.

Congratulations to Jonathon Pye who is the 2014/2015 Burnley parkrun champion and our junior member Sophie Ashworth for taking the junior award. Every Saturday morning come rain, wind or hail they have turned up to parkrun and their dedication has been rewarded.

Burnley parkrun champions Jonathan Pye and Sophie Ashworth

Jonathon Pye reports;

“People should never underestimate the power of this wonderful, entirely volunteer led event every Saturday morning. Starting out 4 years ago after being dragged down to my first one, I never really aimed to be more than a reliably average runner, running with a smile on my face and enjoying the fun and fitness.

4 years later, I’ve joined a club, won three events, two trophies and love every second. Parkrun has given me confidence, introduced me to some amazing people and been a great event to become part of. It’s seen me develop an epic duel with Jacob Watson and been cheered along by Team Stevenson, a family who embody the spirit of running. It isn’t always about the fast lads at the front, but the people who turn out every weekend, sometimes having never run before and who put in the dedication to see their PBs tumble. It’s about the fabulous volunteers who are always there and, whatever the weather, make sure it happens. It’s about the amazing David Belshaw who takes photos week in week out. Most importantly for me, it’s about the juniors who make up a sea of smiling face every Saturday and who see running as a massive part of their lives. Teaching isn’t and shouldn’t always be about academia but about helping children who have a genuine talent thrive in something, and that’s what Parkrun does.

Here’s to another year Parkrun. I bloody love you!”

The days are long, the nights are short and there is an abundance of racing opportunities for our members to get their teeth into. It’s all been rather scenic this week with hills, parks, waterfalls and people dressed up as cows.

Austwick Amble – Monday 25 May

This year’s Austwick Amble, held in conjunction with the Annual Street Market, was held in dry but overcast conditions this year. The event attracted a record numbers of entrants, some of who had travelled from far afield, including a party from Orion Harriers in Essex and a family from Sark in the Channel islands.

Runners received enthusiastic support from spectators, particularly at the start and finish located in the centre of the village. This year there was a full programme of junior races from Under 12 up to Under 18.

Lennon Jackson was our sole junior representative and finished in 12th place in the U12 boys race with a time of 11:50. Well done Lennon!

The senior race (8 miles with 1,200 feet of ascent and descent) featured a record field of 169 runners who set off from Austwick Village at 1.00pm, with the weather overcast but still dry. Paul Hesketh was the first Clayton man home and was also the leading V50. Jeffrey Pickup was leading vet 60.

Duddon Valley Fell Races – Saturday 30 May

The Long Duddon is a classic fell race covering 18 miles around the head of the Duddon Valley with 6000ft of climb over Harter, Hardknott, Little Stand, Swirl How, Dow Crag, White Pike and Caw.

The Short Duddon is run at the same time over a 10 mile course with 3000 feet of climb up Dow and Caw. Both are category A fell races so navigational ability, proper kit and some idea of what you’re doing are all essential.

Report from Peter Browning

Saturday May 30th, saw the third round of the 2015 English Fell Running Championships with the Duddon Valley Fell Race. This event is a classic AL Lakeland race, and was founded in 1978 by my wife Sandi’s uncle, Ken Ledward. Although the course doesn’t take runners to any of Cumbria’s highest peaks, there are still 18 miles and 6000 feet of climbing to be tackled, and in misty weather, the route poses many difficult navigational problems.

This year however, the 325 starters were pleased to welcome a nice weather window in what has been a dismal May, and although it was never that warm, the clouds remained high and good visibility maintained throughout. Four Clayton Harriers started the race, all veterans of one sort or another. It’s a great shame that our talented senior runners were all absent, but maybe that’s another story for another day.

I must confess to having been quite nervous prior to the race, not having done a race as tough as this for quite some time. “Start slowly and work your way into the race” was the general advice, and this is what I did. 254th place at checkpoint one to a finish position of 188th tells its own tale, and I was delighted to discover that the old stamina and ability to keep going at a steady pace all the way was still lurking in there. The climb from the foot of Hard Knot to the top of Little Stand (checkpoints 2 to 3) looks daunting when you first see it, and although it took me a good 26 minutes, it passed quickly enough. Once through the Three Shires Stone checkpoint, you are on the way home, and whilst there is some rough ground, notably towards the Dow Crag checkpoint where in the 1991 race, I tripped and fell face first into the ground smashing a front tooth out and badly cutting my lip, knees and hands, there is also some good fast running towards White Pike if you have anything left in the tank. No scares for me on Dow Crag this year, though when I finished the race in 1991, having been scraped off the floor by my club mate Steve Breckell and the late Paul Martin from Bolton, my club vest was definitely more red than white! It’s amazing what adrenalin can do. A fast descent from the last checkpoint on Caw takes you back down to the finish at the Newfield Inn.

Race winner Rob Hope from Pudsey and Bramley was showered, changed and on his third pint by the time the Clayton runners got back, but for the record their times were:

  • Rob Hope (V40) 2. 44. 01
  • Peter Browning (V55) 4.11.15
  • Andy McFarlane (V45) 4.12.32
  • Kieran Carr (V70) 4.23.46
  • Wendy Dodds (LV60) 4.28.09

Both Kieran and Wendy won their respective age group categories, and I was absolutely delighted to be first Clayton finisher since I can’t remember when. Now, when’s Wasdale?

Coniston Gullies – Sunday 31 May

Coniston Gullies is a brilliant fell race for the fearless fell runner. It may be short in distance, but it has a lung buster of a climb and a tremendous descent which is a sheer drop taking in a scree section. It’s a classic up and down race, not for the faint hearted.

I would walk 100 miles and the best of the rest…..

Another busy week and a treat for you as I’m the guest editor of the weekly roundup (just hope I do it justice). The week started with the 1st of the Clayton Summer series races .

The Ogden Valley round a tough 6.2miler was won by Jacob Boyle with Paul Hesketh not to far behind, and guest Joshua Boyle in 3rd. In the more important guess the time competition Ralph Baines took the prize being only 9 seconds out (you sure you didn’t wear a watch Ralph??). There were 23 runners in total. Full results are here.

 Pendle Boar Clough Fell Race

Saturday saw race 2 of the weekend of running and another race in the Fell Club Championship.  This new race was a real tester for the runners of Clayton taking you up Boar Clough past the trig before descending sharply to the bottom of the big end, then traversing across to the cart track for the 2nd major climb and then onto the fast run off the spine back to Barley.

Hutton Roof Crags Fell Race

A glorious summer’s day greeted 244 senior and 129 junior fell runners to Hutton Roof Crags 30th Fell Race. This race was originated by Ian Rooke, Pete Bland and Dave Bayliss with the first offical race taking place in 1985 to support the building of the new Village Hall. The event, in conjunction with the fabulous County Fair – with its famous cakes – have supported the Village Hall ever since.
The lovely weather dried up the course well, with a few muddy areas remaining under the trees, making it the fastest race since 2009, when it was an inter-counties fixture. Full results are here.

Red Rose 100

Adrienne Olszewska took part in this LDWA 100 mile event (hence why I’m here today).

The route is anti-clockwise loop from the Anderton Centre on the banks of Rivington Reservoir. Some people say theres 183 stiles others 250, Adrienne lost count!!
This event looks look a really toughy with Adrienne saying the day after “This morning I am mostly cursing the fact that I live in a house with two staircases after completing the LDWA Red Rose 100 miler, a massive thank you to all the people that came out to support me” and from the look of her feet im not sure she’ll be doing it again… or will she?

To me, to you

Teamwork was most definitely the theme this week with absolutely loads of Clayton-le-Moors Harriers taking part in relays on the fells and the British Masters Road Relays. We’ve also been representing the county at the FRA Inter County Championships and setting the odd course record.

Wholan Nook Trail Race – 13 May

Another fantastic turnout for this midweek race, the third in the Burnley and Pendle Grand Prix series for 2015. 57 Clayton-le-Moors Harriers took part in a field of 150 – that’s a third of all the people running! The weather conditions were near perfect, with plenty of sunshine, a pleasant temperature and not too much wind.

Running in his first trail race, Danny Collinge was at the front of the pack for much of the race battling with Barlick Fell Runners’ Thomas Corrigan, but finally finishing in second place. Jordan McDonald also had an excellent race finishing in fourth place. Andrew Stubbs completed our hat trick of top ten finishers. Kevin Davies was first V55 and David Scott and Ted Orrell were the first V70 and V75 respectively.

The Ian Casey 5K at Cowm Reservoir – 14 May

Report from Richard Lawson

Ian Casey collapsed and died in a marathon after 15 miles in around 2010. He was a member of Royton Road Runners and this is why 67 of them turned up for this fast 5K. Four of us went and Bob Hirst ran near his PB to record 25:44.  Jack McGuire managed a sub 30, Richard failed by a long way to win the M70s but wife Val did a post hip op PB of 33:47, but was still 2nd W70. These races have a good atmosphere and raise a 5-figure sum for charity each year

Old County Tops – 16 May 2015

Congratulations to Ladies Fell Captain Jean Brown and Nicky Spinks for 1st Ladies in the Old County Tops in a new ladies record of 8.28.06. Excellent performance!

Jean reports;

The Old County Tops is described on the organisers website as ‘a 37 mile/10,000ft event (distance and climb dependant on whether you go the right or wrong way).  The Race starts in Great Langdale and takes in the tops of Helvellyn, Scafell Pike and Coniston after which the competitors are fed and watered.’

It is run in pairs – which adds a different element to the race!  I have done it three times before and it is one of my favourites.  This year for the first time I had a female partner -Nicky Spinks. Nicky is nationally renowned for her long distance challenge records, but was planning on supporting leg one of a Bob Graham round at midnight the night before so I hoped she would be slowed to my pace!  We worked well as a team, each with our strengths – Nicky tweaked her ankle early on so I was faster down, and she was faster on the ascents.  It was tough on the tops with a strong cold wind – my face went numb in the wind on the way back from Coniston!

We finished in 22nd overall in 8 hours 28 minutes. 1st ladies team and a new ladies course record which we were extremely pleased with.

Report by John Roche

A very early start of 7:00am saw around 40 Clayton-le-Moors Harriers making the journey to the British Masters Road Relays at Sutton Park – Sutton Coldfield – Birmingham.

John Roche 1

This is possibly the best road running relay in the calendar. Sutton Park is perfect for this type of event, set inside 2000 acres of beautiful parkland. The course is one lap and quite testing in places with nowhere to hide from spectators encouraging you to keep pushing through the pain barrier.

Clayton-le-Moors Harriers has great history of success at this event and this year would hopefully continue that trend.  This year we had the company of the tangerine army of ladies on tour with most of them attending for the first time and as you would expect the nerves were jangling all morning preparing for the start.

It was another fantastic day for Clayton-le-Moors Harriers thoroughly enjoyed by everyone that made the journey. The weather was sunny as usual …thanks ‘Shack’.  The return journey was a happy one with a few medals and some tremendous individual performances from; Karin Goss, Irene, Mark Aspy (Legend), Dave Naughton to name just a few.

The newbies also had a memorable day with many PB runs (Well done) and wearing our vest with pride in such a prestigious event. Personal thanks to all the last minute ‘stand in’ runners.

Garry Wilkinson… ‘Always a fantastic day and a chance to run the best of the best’. It’s only a short distance but with the adrenaline and pushing yourself to the limits, this is the hardest type of racing and you need to be mentally tough to succeed’ .

Montane Trail 13 Howgills – 17 May

Whilst often appearing as bridesmaid to the more glamorous pairing of the Lakes and the Dales, the Howgills have long been regarded as an underrated area in which to walk, cycle or run.

In my quest to convert cycling-legs to fellrunners-legs and get used to running further, if not faster, a round of the popular Montane Trail series promising a tour of the best bits around Sedbergh seemed like a good place to start. Offering both half and full trail marathon options, this round of the series seemed to offer slightly rougher terrain and plenty of climbing, more akin to a fell race than an traditional trail race. I opted for the 13 mile distance, given the longest distance I had run since starting a few months ago was 10 miles.

Alan Dorrington

The course started straight up Winder and onto the Calf – about 4 miles of steep, almost continuous climbing that I really enjoyed. What height we had gained in the past 4 miles, was then mostly lost in the next 2 as the route descended steeply down by Cautley Spout – a profile much like the couple of shorter local fell races I’d done recently. Except there was no finish in a grassy field by a pub, rather a 6 mile run in on at times rocky, at times grassy paths back to Sedbergh.

Running with friend Greg whose extensive experience in 24hr and multi-day mountainbike racing was also not converting particularly well to fast-ish running, we both struggled to keep a good pace along this section of rolling tracks and fields. Still, the views over to Great Baugh Fell and the River Rawthey valley more than made up for the worsening condition of my/our legs. Smoother, grassy river meadows on the final run in to Sedbergh allowed a leg-based second wind and I enjoyed picking up the pace substantially, and picking off several places into the finish.

Having cracked the trail half marathon distance, I’m looking forward to some longer fell races over summer and into Autumn, ultimately with a view to getting entry in the 3 Peaks fell race next Spring, the cyclocross version of which I’ve done many times over the years.

Chester Half Marathon – 17 May

Two of our ladies took part in this popular half marathon in the picturesque city of Chester.

Report from Clare Wilson

‘There was a fantastic atmosphere at this race which started at Chester race course and finished in the city centre. Considering there were 7000 runners we thought it might take a while to get going, but the race got off to a fast start and it felt a harder course than the other half marathons that Steph and I have previously run so it felt a tough race. Considering this, both of us got times we were happy with, with Steph getting a new PB.’

Pinhaw Moor – 8 May

There was an impressive turnout of 38 Clayton Harriers out braving inclement weather to take part in the second race of the Pendle & Burnley Grand Prix Series. This race is a 5 mile trail race organised by Barlick Fell Runners.

Report by Michelle Butschok
Thoroughly enjoyed the Pin Haw Trail race. Yes it was wet, windy and boggy in places…but you know what, I did it with a smile on my face, even when I fell on it in the mud!! First fall and didn’t dampen my spirits. Thanks to all the marshalls for their encouragement and for being there in those conditions.

Report from Dave Burnett
Horrible conditions tonight but really enjoyed it, apart from my Helen nearly beating me to the trig and my subsequent traditional running vomit. Had a laugh at myself on the way down though, as whilst I was trying to keep ahead of the runner hot on my heals I turned and realised the heavy breathing I could hear was in fact myself echoing off the dry stone walls. Ha! Ha!

Jonathon Pye added; “Dave was right – horrible conditions but enjoyable, running in road shoes which needed a viking burial afterwards.”

Lakeland Trails Series – Stavely 9 May

All I can say about the Lakeland Trails Spring Series of racing is – if you’ve fallen out of love with running, then get yourself signed up to those races… The atmosphere, the organisation, the trails and the scenery make it more than just running another race. They are phenomenal.

Brett Holdsworth

As for Staveley, it was my favourite of the three – and possibly my best performance of the lot, completing 11.2 miles in just under 1:10 exactly. Breton also had another excellent run, coming in 4th which he consistently achieved in all three races. Will certainly be back again to compete for the Spring Series crown once again next year!

Mens Report from Paul Shackleton

Around 15 Clayton-le-Moors Harriers took part in the English Championship fell race at Church Stretton. With 3000 feet of ascent in only 6 miles,  it was no wonder that one of our members described the route as “the toughest 6 miles he’d raced in 30 years of running”. The route took in six summits around the Long Mynd with steep climbs, steep descents and some fast running in the valleys to break it up.

Paul Shackleton

The race was won by Tom Addison and Annie Conway was first woman. Some excellent performances from Clayton runners with Alan Life, Garry Wilkinson and Ryan Wilkinson all getting in the first 100 (Alan and Garry 7th and 9th V50) Kieran Carr was 1st V70 and. Wendy Dodds and Jean Brown were 2nd and 4th in their respective categories.

Ladies Report by Katy Thompson

Five Clayton ladies made the trip down to Church Stretton for this, the second English Championship race. 6.3m and 3250 ft of climb over six summits: it was never going to be easy. I’ve done enough races around the Long Mynd to know how steep the ascents and descents are.

After my usual slow start up the steep road and onto the fell there weren’t many runners behind me on the first summit but I gradually gained on those ahead on the contour round to Yearlet. As I slithered down the steep descent I wished I had gone ahead and bought those new shoes before the race instead of just thinking about it. The steep climb up and over Grindle was well marked through the heather; then there was a lovely run down Callow Hollow – a bit frustrating though if you wanted to pass anyone. As we climbed Callow I was gradually passing other runners, and on the contour round to Nills I caught Angela. But she wasn’t going to let me have it all my own way, and I had to chase her up the hill and down to the footbridge in Ashes Hollow. As we set off on the climb to the final summit I was aware that she wasn’t far behind. My legs were protesting loudly, but they gradually got into uphill mode again, then it was a lovely downhill, gentle at first then getting steeper as we dropped down to the finish, with a final short pull up before the downhill into the finish.

Jean was our first finisher, 31st in a field of 79 ladies, and 12th LV40. Wendy was 2nd LV60. Vicky was third finisher making us joint 4th Lady Vet team.

Morrisons’ Great Manchester 10k – 10 May

Well done to our Great Manchester 10k runners!  Jacob Watson ran up a storm finishing in 90th place with a time of 36:16 and an appearance on the TV coverage to boot! And there were PBs galore for our runners too. Legendary Ron Hill was also among the thousands running on the day.

Report from Jacob Watson

Nearly £40 for a 10k? Now I wouldn’t say I’m tight-fisted but that seems quite steep I remember thinking while entering my card details onto the Great Manchester Run website. I’m sure Towneley 10k was about a fiver!

This was the second time I’d run this race and, like most people lined up at the start, I was looking for a PB. The atmosphere was awesome, I was feeling confident, and my aim was to start comfortably and finish strong. The buzz of the event kept me on pace through miles 1-4, however, by the fifth mile I started flagging. The bands kept me going as did the crowd (hearing “Come on Clayton!” never fails to lift my spirits), and I managed to hold it together, knocking 4 minutes off last year’s time.

So was the asking price of £3.80 for each kilometre worth it? I don’t think I’d be racing much if every race cost this much, but as an experience; yes. One for the race calendar next year (and the year after!).

Jacob Watson’s TV finish!

Report by Lee Moore

Arrived at Manchester early and the atmosphere was already building up. We got into postion in the orange wave and, after chatting to fellow runners and the group warm up, we were off. I got to pass my beloved Old Trafford on the course and really enjoyed the cold showers en route! Overall an excellent day and managed to post my best 10k time this year.

Report by Elouise Pemberton

The morning of the race I was filled with excitement and nerves, this being the first time I had taken part in an event as big as this. I had no idea what to expect and I was stunned by the sheer amount of people taking part.

We were greeted by the compere, welcoming the Clayton team with pride.  The atmosphere was buzzing, the course was enjoyable and the live music and spectators really helped you to keep up the pace.

Well all got PBs.  I will be signing up again for next year.

Blacksticks Blue 10k – 10 May

This low key 10k road race starts and finishes at Whitechapel Village Hall and offers stunning views overlooking the Bowland Fells.  Bianca Bennet and Robert Hirst took part.

Bianca Bennett Reports;

Blacksticks Blue 10k was the complete contrast of Manchester 10k today. 128m total ascent compared to the flat 30m total ascent of Manchester. 190 participants at Blacksticks to the many thousands that took part at Manchester. Then there was the scenic route of woodlands and fields to the busy city life; the list could go on…but they did have one thing in common a supportive crowd! It was amazing to have people really root for the runners. The runners of Blacksticks really supported one another too and even though we ran for different clubs there was a real sense of community.

Irene Roche reports;

A few Clayton members ran at Whitworth, Cowme Res 5k. Andy O’Sullivan has a few of these mid-weekers going and raising good amounts of money for charity. Around 35 to 40 runners took part after a slightly delayed start due to late competitors arriving after traffic problems. But the delayed start was welcome as this was when the sun shone through after a dark cloud threatened to dampen our spirits! Laura Hesketh achieved First Lady and lots of other Clayton winning prizes/age categories. Totally enjoyable midweek event.

Cake Race – 2 May

An interesting moorland course with as much cake as you like to eat at the end. Who could ask for more? The course takes in open moorland scenery, industrial heritage, and Pennine farmland all in a hour or so. It is mainly on flagged paths, tracks and trails with the challenge of going over the Pennines and back.

Cake Race

Nerina Gill at the Cake Race. Photo by the Woodentops

The first mile or so is up hill onto the moors, which is very runnable, we call the path boat lane, since it was build to take the horses from the canal barges over the hills. Once up on the Moors you take the flagged path to Brun Cough Reservoir. The course is fast at this point, although care is needed as the flagstones can be slippy. The route splits the reservoirs at Wessenden Head and turns down toward Marsden where you can run fast down towards Marsden. The hardest part is yet to come as runners meet a long flight of stone steps that sweeps them down the side of the dam only to return them up a similar flight on the other side! Save a bit of energy for the climb back up onto the Moors, against the prevailing wind, you will be rewarded with stunning views across Marsden Moor.

The track brings runners back to the top of Boat lane and a good long run into the finish where cakes and tea await all finishers. All Runners are invited to bring a cake which will be entered into the Cake contest. Prizes for best tasting and best decoration. This is a tough race and you’ll really feel like you’ve earned the cake afterwards.

Three Clayton Ladies took part, Vicky Heys, Angela Shian and Nerina Gill.  Interestingly, Nerina has just entered the VLM ballot for next year… I do hope it wasn’t because of all the cake! Well done ladies!

Pendle Cloughs – 2 May

Just 30 hardy fell runners finished this tough, local race organised by Barlick Fell Runners. Course record holder Tom Brunt returned for a third time to take on this race. The conditions on the top of Pendle were cold, wet and very windy and were not ideal for record breaking times.  As it turned out, Tom had a comfortable win over Martin Hurst from Pudsey & Bramley who was closely followed home in third place by Max Wainwright from Helsby RC.

Great Hameldon Hill Race – 3 May

Despite a rather grim start to the day, 27 juniors and 57 senior members took part in the first of the Burnley and Pendle Grand Prix Series, with a fair few of both adults and children running in their first ever fell race.  The weather was kind to us and things cleared up nicely for the first race of the day. The juniors were out in force with many of them cheering and running alongside their siblings and team mates. They also formed an enthusiastic and exuberant cheer squad as they watched the seniors coming in.

Under 8s Race

15 children took part in the Under 8s running a fast and furious circuit of the Peel Park school playing field incorporating a bit of a hill at the rear just to add a little sting in the tail ( also added to the end of the longer races just to add a little spice!).

Clayton Juniors

We had some fantastic runs from our juniors with first and third positions for Isaac Smith and Joshua McKay. A Masie Howarth and Jessica Bradley were are two girls in the race and both of them had great runs. Very well done!

22 children took part in the next age group race with two laps of the playing field to undertake.  Dexta Thompson took the lead and held onto it with great great and determination, managing to save a bit extra for a sprint to the finish to secure his win.

Great Hameldon Hill Race

I’d hoped for a weekend off from racing after the Three Peaks, but couldn’t resist competing at one of the best races in the P&B calendar. With the Peaks still in my legs, and a full week of comfort eating, I decided to ease myself into the race and ran with the Liverpool runner, Richard Burney for the majority of the way up Hameldon Hill. I held back until the summit, hoping to pull away on the way back down… As it turns out, Richard is a 15 minute 5K runner. I ended the race in 2nd place with a time of 38:45 – almost 2 minutes quicker than last years time. So very happy with the result! We had a great turn out, and had some great performances from the younger members in Jordan McDonald, and some impressive junior displays too. A top event to kick of the Summer racing calendar!

After suffering from a stress fracture since before Christmas, I’ve just started to get back into running in the past month or so. I know the Hameldon route well so felt ok and reached the summit with a lady from Trawden in sight. On the descent however she pulled away and I was over taken by a lady from Accrington road runners. I thought I might have been able to catch them but I’m not too good on the downhill so they stayed out of reach! I also finished 2 minutes quicker than last year and enjoyed being cheered on by a group of Clayton juniors at the end! Look forward to more races this summer and being part of the relay team for my first time in the Calderdale Way.

Our Ladies ‘A’ team were 2nd and our Mens ‘A’ Team were 1st.  Well done everyone.

Coniston Fell Racer – 3 May

Report by Peter Browning

Coniston Fell Race

Coniston Fell Race – a return to wintery conditions. Photo by Coniston Fell Runners

Five Clayton Harriers made the journey north to the southern Lakes for the annual Coniston Fell Race, the first of the truly classic Lakeland races. The race is traditionally held under blue skies and lovely spring sunshine, but not this year. We were well and truly back in winter conditions, with snow falling on the tops, high winds and poor visibility. Following recent comments from some quarters, if ever there was a reminder of the need to carry full kit in all fell races as outlined by the FRA, this was it. Former top ten Coniston finisher Tim Edward led the Clayton contingent home, followed by Peter Browning, Andrew Firth, Mark Taylor and Peter Dugdale. Full results have still not been published, but finishing safely was the simple aim of most competitors.

Not completely sure on results as yet, but they all gave 100% . Well done juniors. Curtis didn’t run after yesterdays track meet in Preston but Briony did and secured another 1st position. Well done everyone!

In fact, Briony won her fourth championship race in a row making her the 2015 English FRA champion with two races still to go to further consolidate her victory.  Congratulations to a brilliant runner and absolute credit to our club!

parkrun roundup

It was the 150th run at Burnley, our unofficial club parkrun, and both seniors and juniors were out in force, many of them warming up for other events over the weekend.  King of the parkrun, Mr Jonathan Pye, was spotted taking to the fells the following day at the Great Hameldon Hill Race. Rumours that he presented a bemused race official with a carefully laminated barcode at the finish line are greatly exaggerated! It was a paced event so lots of PBs and it was also great to see Danny Collinge & Jonathon Pye giving Clayton Juniors one to one coaching to help them improve!

West Nab – 18 April

Report by Andrew Holt

The third FRA English junior championships race took place across the M62 in Meltham. As usual it was well organised and well attended. The course is similar to the FRA route at Pendle, with an uphill start, longish flat straight and a sharp ramp upwards into the moors. The weather was sunny, warm and hard underfoot with the only mud to be found in the occasional bog and small river crossing. Unusually for a fell race a good percentage of this course is singletrack making overtaking difficult.

Clayton juniors were represented by three runners, Dexta and Liberty Thompson, running only their second FRA fell race, and Briony Holt. Dexta was first away, pacing himself well along the single track and overtaking where and when he could. Finishing we think (photo counting) an amazing fourth. (he was nearly half way back at the start!)

Briony and Liberty ran next, climbing further up and around the farm. Liberty was rightly cautious about starting too quickly and started towards the rear of the group. Liberty held a steady position around the course, even gaining ground on more experienced athletes. Obviously feeling tired at the end, Liberty finished strongly in approx 25th position, (counted via photos on Woodentops) in a competitive field on a difficult course.

This was Briony’s second attempt at West Nab, but first at the longer u14 route. After the usual dash out of the field Briony was placed 5th or 6th the, but gained ground and led from from the first downhill stretch, and had a healthy lead at the half way point. A strong challenge from two athletes including last years champion, provided an excellent finish, with Briony narrowly claiming a victory via a sprint in the starting field.

Briony has only to finish one of three races to be joint english champion, and she’s won three out of three so far.

Lakeland Trails Hawkshead – 18 April

Starting and finishing at Hawkshead, the 17km Hawkshead Trail Race, 17km Hawkshead Trail Challenge and 10km Hawkshead Trail Run follow circuits along well marked and marshalled footpaths and bridleways, taking in panoramic views of Lake Windermere and the surrounding peaks of the Coniston Hills, the Langdales and most of the Lakeland fells. All of the routes take in the infamous, mile long, near vertical, killer climb of the “Coffin Trail”! Underfoot conditions are generally good, particularly for those used to off-road running.

Clayton Lady, Sophie McIntosh tackled the 10k. She described it as a tough one with an extra 1.7km (making it 11.7km), not to mention the 1 mile vertical climb called ‘the coffin trail’. However, the scenery was beautiful and she really enjoyed it.

Podium 5k – 18 April

The sun shone but a cold easterly wind hit the runners on each of the 5 laps in the April version of the PODIUM 5K at Barrowford, Lancashire. Three Clayton men took part in the B race.

Report by Richard Stevenson

After missing out on a sub-18 for 5k at Hollingworth Lake 2 weeks ago, I thought I’d give the Podium 5k a go. I’d heard it was a very flat and fast course. We got there early to watch the A race; boy these guys are impressively fast! Then straight after was the B race with a few from the first race kindly helping out as pacers for us. My tactic was to try and stay just in front of the 18 minute pacer which I just about managed then it was down to an eyeball out sprint for the line. Oh yes 17:49! A new PB and my first sub-18 minute 5k. Well done to the fellow Clayton runners there John and Andy. I know Andy was very pleased with his time.

Report from Andy Bradley

Podium 5k perfect for PBs! No pacer for someone hoping to beat 20 mins, not sure some of the a race guys could go that slow!! Asked a couple of lads what they were aiming for and tried to hang on to them, just managed it! Enjoyed the encouragement from the Trawden and clayton attendees, always a help in the last lap when your legs feel like lead. will hope its less windy time as I think I can go (a little bit) faster. £4 well spent and loved watching the a race, some proper runners there!

Y Moelwyn Fell Race – 18 April

Race report from Paul Shackleton

A bakers dozen of Clayton-le-Moors Harriers were at the first British Fell Championships race of the year at Blaenau Ffestiniog on Saturday for the Ras Y Moelwyn race; 16.9k (10 miles) with 850 metres of ascent. Under a cloudless sky we went off down the road from the town centre and climbed up through the old quarries to Moelwyn Mawr at 770 metres. After a steep descent, we then climbed Moelwyn Bach, down a rocky and boggy descent to the Llyn Stwlan dam where the locals offered us jelly babies and flapjacks and then climbed again to Moel Yr Hydd. A fast descent and a run back through the quarry tracks and we were at the finish. The race is a classic! Finley Wild won the men’s race with Rob Hope second and Jasmine Parris was the first lady. Clayton men were led home by Neil Hardiman and fist Clayton lady was Jean Brown. 362 runners took part in the race.

Well we’ve had an outbreak of PBs this week from lots of our runners from the youngest juniors to the most senior veterans, but particularly for lots of our juniors at Burnley!  On a sunny and cool morning, conditions were ripe for such a crop of great runs.  As usual our male runners dominated the top ten at the Burnley parkrun and at the Pendle event as well this week so well done to them.

From fast and furious 200m at the track to long and steady ultra distances, our club members have been out in all weathers in all kinds of places.  There have been personal bests, and the odd personal worst, but as always we are chomping at the bit and raring to take on the next challenge.

Fell Running

Just a quick report from the Coledale Horseshoe. I had the weekend off work and Burnley were playing at 5pm, so I decided to do some preparation for the Three Peaks Race in two weeks. I left home at 8am, the weather was terrible with driving rain and I thought to myself I must be insane going up to the lakes. I arrived at Braithwaite where there were strong winds but the sun was out with snow on the Mountains. So the event was shortened because of the snow, and the route was changed slightly. There were quite a few Clayton members running Neil Hardiman, Barb Savage, Jean Brown, David Bagot, myself, Andy Firth, Pete Browning, Mark Nutter, Peter Dugdale and Andrew. Overall it was a very enjoyable day.

3 Bridges 10K – 12 April

This is described as a flat, fast and scenic route though Lancaster, unsurprisingly, going over 3 bridges

Adam Hamer described this race as: ” a tough one because of the weather but relatively flat. The first 5k wasn’t too bad with the wind behind us but as it was an out and back again type race the gales were in our faces which made tired legs even more tired for the final 5k. Overall the race would have been average-okay but catching the bad weather made it pretty tough.”

Sophie McIntosh added; “Those steps in the middle were a surprise that my legs did not enjoy!”

Mynd Mac – 12 April

Jean Brown was running in this fell race  which she describes as a lovely 4.5 miles on the Long Mynd – very windy and lots of climbing. She was 3rd Lady overall.

The race rises out of the beautiful Carding Mill Valley, there is a stiff climb up over Stanyeld followed by a good old gallop down a north-easterly spur of Haddon Hill into the delightful Batch Valley, immediately leaving via Long Batch – long by name and nature, and one of the lesser used routes on the Longmynd. An entertaining path (now you see it, now you don’t – but waymarked on the day) crosses a stream several times as it hauls up to a pool and cairn, and a track which runs parallel to the Saxon drove of The Portway.

A few hundred yards further and the turn for home with a lovely, undulating run over Haddon and spectacular views for those with the time and inclination to enjoy them. Just when you thought it was all over, one last climb up to the remarkable Iron Age fort on Bodbury Hill and then along the top of the hill before sweeping down, back into Carding Mill Valley – job done!

Just having a look through the local event results we had a stonking set of results at the Burnley parkrun. Top ten finishes for four of our male runners, first female finisher, and eight junior runners with new PBs for Sophie Ashworth and Nathan Kewin. New PBs also for senior runners Andrew Webster and John Wilcock who finished a mere second apart – bit of a race was it?
