Raindrops keep falling

Storm Abigail did her best but it wasn’t enough to deter our hardy Harriers. You have been on the roads, fells and parks as always giving it your all. An international flavour again this week with Clayton Harriers popping up at parkrun in New Zealand and the Rock ‘n’ Roll marathon in Las Vegas.

Well done also to Dexta and Liberty Thompson who ran in the U11 boys and U13 girls races of the West Yorkshire League in Keighley on Saturday 14th November. They both ran well but are listed as guest runners and not counted in the places. By my reckoning, Dexta was in equal 5th place and Liberty was in 36th. Well done both of you!

Todmorden 5k

On a somewhat soggy night, 7 Clayton-le-Moors Harriers made the trip to Todmorden for the first of the winter 5k series. Dan Balshaw finished in 2nd place and together with Matthew Duckworth and Garry Wilkinson was part of the 1st place mens team running for the “Running4CF” charity.

Dunnerdale Fell Race

Dunnerdale is a classic short race round the tiny but rugged fells between the Lickle and the Duddon valleys. The scenery is superb, the course is tough and varied, you get a pie and there’s a very nice pub at the finish.

RunFurther AGM & Presentation

The RunFurther AGM and presentation was held in the Pendle Inn at Barley after the Tour of Pendle. With a 4th overall and 1st Vet 50 for Martin plus a 6th place for our team (Martin Terry, Andy Armstrong and Nick Olszewski) we are definitely making our presence felt in the ultra scene.

Martin Terry, 1st V50 Male at the RunFurther Championships Presentation.

The Runfurther race series is an annual championship based round 12 off-road Ultra running races in the UK. They don’t organise the races, just the tournament scoring. You can join in for free (although you’ll have to pay to enter the races of course). The races change from year to year, but there are usually a number of old favourites in the series, and they try to stick to lower-cost races as far as is practical.

The Tinto Hill Race (7Km, 460m)

Report By Robin Nicolson

It was a bit of a pilgrimage (of sorts). When I was at University (studying Statistics) I undertook a research project on fell running! The purpose was to use statistical techniques to create a formula to predict times for fell races. Well as part of my research I went, with the then chairman of the Scottish Hill Runners Association (SHRA) – Alan Farningham, to observe the race scene. The race I went to observe was the Tinto Hill Race. Alan actually finished 5th (32:26 – running for Gala).

Registration is at Symington Village Hall (a 10 min drive to the start) – so early registration is advised to get a “good parking” spot. The village itself is only 15 mins from M6 – which makes it relatively accessible for us “southern” runners! The SHRA hold their AGM in the village hall at the conclusion of the prize giving – that might be the reason for the fairly large field, 244 this year.

From my previous visit (11th November 1989) – I can only recall a line of pylons and a hill in the distance. This time, with the benefit of what such a race entails, I was able to recce the first part of the climb, before the start. I have run the whole route in the summer – different conditions from race day. The route is a straightforward “up and back” following the main walkers path to the summit. The path is fairly eroded, similar in many ways to the main path up Pendle from the nick, but climbing from the start. However after ½ mile there was a “kissing gate”, yes there was choice of routes (flagged) but Scottish racing rules must be different – everybody went over the barbed wire fence! The first climb (to just under Totherin Hill – 479m) was very reasonable, we contoured under the “top” and followed a routine of plateau, climb, plateau and a final push to the summit (707m). Anticlockwise around a boulder strewn peak before taking the fast descent to the finish, following the same route.

After a forecast of wind and rain it was a relief to arrive at the foot of Tinto hill to cold (6°C) but dry weather. The top of the hill was shrouded in cloud and when we reached the summit there was a wee bit of snow just to make things more interesting (a couple of inches)! Overall conditions were great. On a personal note, I did not climb well but was more than happy with my descent; nobody went past me (and no I was not last at the top)!

I would thoroughly recommend this race to those wanting a great short winter race with character. I had a good number of conversations with “friends not yet met” (WB Yeats) and I will be returning in the future.

Race description on Scottish Hill Racing Website “A social afternoon with tea, soup and beer afterwards at Symington Sports Club”.

P. S.I note here some observations for race organisers (that I have not come across before).

Full body cover was required, as well as map, compass etc. Rather than having to queue to have this checked 10 mins before the start (or at registration – when all your gear is still in your car!); you took your “kit” to the start line to confirm you “had everything” and your race number was signed! Allowing you to proceed with your warm-up. The allowed for a smoother start to some FRA races. However, there was no counting to the number at the start line – a whole debate in itself.

Tour Of Pendle

With a weather forecast full of doom, gloom and Storm Abigail set to batter us, the organisers took the difficult decision to switch to a bad weather route. The response was a mixture of relief from some and disappointment from others. In the event, the really foul weather waited until later in the day. A tough call but the right one by the organisers.

Race organisers and marshalls at the Tour of Pendle Race.

422 hardy fell runners lined up to tackle what is still a pretty tough 13/14 mile course albeit with a mere 3000ft of climb, the last couple of killer climbs being bypassed on the bad weather route. Still a hard challenge in anyone’s book. 409 crossed the finish line.

Chris Holdsworth had a phenomenal run in a brand spanking new pair of shoes and finished in 2nd place. After last year’s event he’d had a bone to pick with this race and has certainly put in the training to tackle it. A great result for Chris ( new shoes not quite so pretty at the end, however!)

Skylines, windmills and lots of mud

Mud, mud, mud and more mud. It’s been a bit of a dirty weekend for our hardy Harriers! A little bit of wind and rain doesn’t really get in the way of such a tough bunch. You’ve been ploughing through cross country, up and down fell and along blustery promenades with gusto this week. There’s even been a bit of cyclocross as well.

Weekly Roundup – Assistant Editor required!

If you’re one of the around 400+ people who view our website news roundup each week and want to help ensure its continued publication then this is the job for you! Our Media Manager, Adrienne Olszewska, does a fantastic job producing the weekly roundups but is not able to produce the roundups all 52 weeks of the year ( because I do like to go on holiday occasionally !).So, the club is looking for a Website News Editor to produce the weekly roundup approximately once a month. Good writing and IT skills are needed for this important role. You’ll also need to be able to commit to finding around four hours to produce each roundup so that publication is normally on Monday.

We need more help to make our club even better. If you think you could be our Website News Editor then please get in touch with Jim Hickie or Adrienne Olszewska.

Red Rose Cross Country League – Hyndburn

Mud, mud, glorious mud! After what seemed like a never-ending downpour the rain sort of stopped and one thing was for certain; there would be mud. Lots and lots of it! There’s a slightly evil start to the race that involves contouring round an incline and the U11 boys who started first ended up with half the field sliding down the hill! So depending on your attitude to the black stuff it was either a heavenly course or something not so nice.

Ilkley Cyclocross

Report from Andrew Armstrong

The mud arrived.

The world of Cyclocross has been waiting for the mud ever since the season started and, finally, this weekend delivered it in lumps. Great big sticky lumps that bind together with grass and leaves, that render expensive bikes near useless and gets everywhere. The kind of mud that takes days to clean off the bike

Paul Hesketh, left, 3rd place in the Ilkley Cyclocross

Paul Hesketh, left, 3rd place in the Ilkley Cyclocross

Ilkley Cross is a low key club run event that combines most of the best bits of Cross in a compact course at the Ilkley Lido. It has fast sweeping sections, tight technical hairpins, treacherously boggy climbs and steep descents between the trees into gloop filled bomb holes. What’s not to like!

Two Harriers made the trip to Ilkley. Paul Hesketh had a score to settle; having failed to finish two races due to mechanical problems he openly admitted to having ‘spat the dummy’ at his last race and thrown his bike in the hedge. He had better luck this time and claimed a podium position with his third place Vet finish. I came significantly further down the field and looked a lot filthier, thanks to a ‘technical sit-down’ on one of the off camber hairpins. We also managed to dodge the rain, which started after the presentation had finished.

All in all; a successful weekend; with plenty more muddy fixtures to look forward to!

Paul Hesketh was third overall and third vet, Andrew Armstrong was 12th, field of 47.

Wadsworth Half Trog

A local classic taking in all the best terrain of the full Trog, without the full distance. Plenty of varied tough terrain. And perhaps a bit of mud! Jeffrey Pickup and Richard Bellaries took part in this 9.3 mile race with 1400ft of climb.

We arrived at Lytham green on not the best of days to be racing. Still abit of wind and rain won’t put us runners off! As it was Remembrance Sunday we had a 2 minute silence and then the race was off. It was a slightly different route than last year which took us off the green and on the road down towards Fairhaven Lake, we ran a lap around the lake and back on to the sea front only to be hit by very strong winds! It was a battle back down towards the windmill to finish back on Lytham green. Overall an excellent race

Parkrun roundup

The foul weather didn’t put too many of our hardy Harriers off on Saturday morning with a pretty good turnout all things considered. The exception being Bianca Bennett who continues her tour of Australian parkruns by taking part in the St Peters parkrun in Sydney where the weather was considerably better than here in blighty!

Bianca Bennett enjoying much nicer weather than Burnley at the St Peters, Sydney parkrun.

Bit of a contrast! Not such nice weather in Burnley. A rather soggy Martin Brady.

Spooky shenanigans, speakers and summits

What a spooktacular weekend it was! Lots of fun was had dressing up and racing at the Hurstwood relays helping to raise money for the victims of the Nepal Disaster earlier this year. As well as road racing, fell racing and some far-flung parkrun tourism as always you are a busy bunch.

VLM Entries

London Marathon 2016 club places update – we have received confirmation that the club has been allocated 3 places for this year’s VLM. Club Secretary John Wilcock is planning on doing the draw on the 14th November so there is still time to apply for a place. If you’ve been rejected in the public ballot and wish to go into our draw, please send your rejection letter to John before the 14th.

Guest Speaker Evening

Social Secretary, Marie Greenwood

A big thank you to Denise Park for a wonderful evening. Informative, educational, entertaining (even a bit of Disney thrown in for good measure) what more could we ask for. Plenty of food for thought for our Clayton runners I think – there were quite a lot of ‘oops that’s me expression’ as you were being told what you shouldn’t be doing!

About 30 club members attended this interesting presentation at Padiham Football Club. Denise Parks gave a fascinating and useful talk about injuries and injury prevention for fell, trail and mountain runners drawing on an incredible wealth of experience in the field at the highest level.

Saturday 31 October

 Nepal Trail Relays

Held in the idyllic location of Hurstwood, Pendle and Burnley Grand Prix organisers put on a team relay event to raise money for Nepal. 33 teams took part. The official line was each team should have 1 cyclist, 1 senior runner, 1 vet runner and 1 lady runner. On the day, however, there were a few honorary vets and ladies on the course.

Fancy dress costumes were actively encouraged and both competitors and marshals threw themselves into it, thoroughly embracing the fact that the event was taking place on Halloween.

Some great team names were proffered, personal favourites were Motley Crew, Alice Nutters, Tutu Crew, Team Terrible, Devils and Barlick Bitches.

First leg was a mountain bike race. This was won by Paul Julian. Paul Hesketh finished in 3rd and Elouise Pemberton was one of the few lady riders on this leg.

Second leg was the Vets which was won by our own Mr Tangerine, Breton Holdworth. There were a handful of lady vets also running. Dave Motley was an honorary vet for this leg.

Third leg was the ladies. Laura Hesketh winning easily. Second was honorary lady for the day, Jacob Watson; great to see him recovering from injury and regaining fitness.

Fourth and final leg was the senior runners. Chris Holdsworth held off Barlick’s Jimmy Craig for a fast and furious finish. Danny Collinge finished in 4th having already taken part in leg 1 for another team.

All in all a very entertaining event for a worthy cause.

 Race you to the Summit

Report from Martin Brady

This was the 49th running of this race (used to be called the Gale Fell Race). The race started as a bet between two people in the Gale Pub near Littleborough after a long drinking session. One said it was impossible to run to the White House Inn on the road to Ripponden and back within 30 minutes the other said he could do it. The race was run and he broke the 30 minutes.

Next year is the 50th and last running of the race. It is mainly trail running with steeper fell section. Kath and myself decided to do the hilly Parkrun at Watergrove near Wardle and then do the Race You To The Summit which was close by.

I have not seen the results of this yet. but the Clayton runners as far as I remember are:-

 NEWSAR Clwydian Hills Fell Race

The NEWSAR Clwydian Hills Fell Race is held annually and is a 15km race with 3,000ft of ascent, over the Clwydian hills in North Wales, including the summit of Moel Famau.

Report from Peter Browning

The Clwyddian Hills is a hidden gem of a race held on the first Sunday in November from the hilltop village of Cilcain in north east Wales. We had a new course to tackle this year, but 159 runners still crossed some stunningly beautiful countryside made all the better by the unseasonably good weather. The warm sunshine blazing down from a pure blue sky actually left runners with running vest sunburn (yes in November!), on what was as good a running day as any experienced this summer. In the distance, the peaks of Snowdonia could clearly be seen, but Liverpool and Manchester were hidden under the blanket of fog that I am told enveloped East Lancashire for most of the day.

The magical sunshine brought out the full range of autumn colours, and for the record, the 9 mile race with almost 3000 feet of climb was won by Stephen Skates of Prestatyn in 82.58. As the only Clayton competitor, my time was a more modest 114.16 but my 75th place made the top half which is my target these days. It was good to see Clayton old boy Dave Nuttall winning the V50’s in 14th place overall. I reckon this was my 15th Clwyddian Hills race, and as it’s in my top 5 races anywhere, I will keep returning as long as I can.

Peak Raid 2015, Round 2

Report by Katy Thompson

Having had a bit of a disaster at the first 2015 Peak Raid event, when my shoe fell to pieces, I was hoping for a better run in Round 2. Setting off from home in thick fog, it didn’t look very promising, but by the time I got to Glossop the sun was shining and it promised to be a lovely day. Unusually for me, I chose well, didn’t make any navigational errors, and managed to get back within the given time.

The Peak Raid events are ideal for anyone wanting to improve their navigation skills: 3 hour Score events – get to as many checkpoints as you can in the given time. There is a big incentive not to be out too long, as 50 points are lost for every minute over time! You can make it as hard or as easy as you want. It would be good to see more Clayton members at these events. Navigators are always in demand for fell relays. Details are on the Fixtures Calendar or the Fellrunner website.

Parkrun roundup

Some fantastic runs, some first time events and some far flung places this week. All over the UK and even as far away as Australia for Bianca Bennett.

Bianca said; “Clayton’s made it down under! Here’s to a 7am park run in the sunshine state in Australia!!! Clearly wearing the best vest out there today. Next stop… Sydney park run.”

Katy and George Thompson took part in the inaugural Haigh Woodlands parkrun near wigan.

Katy Thompson reports:

The inaugural Haigh Woodlands Parkrun attracted a field of 199 runners. We set off along a tarmac track, but soon veered off into the woods on muddy paths.   Downhill for nearly 3k then a slightly shorter route back up to the Hall – a fairly familiar route if you have done the Haigh Hall races. Well worth a visit – just a few miles off the M61.

Great Whernside Fell Race

Report from Andrew Walmsley

Heavy rain was forecast for the morning of the race. Just before the start at 11:30 am it had stopped raining, though still looked threatening and promised a cold tailwind to the summit turnaround, so not all bad!

Andrew Walmsley at the Great Whernside Fell Race. Photo by Scott Leach

Before the start Andrew Jebb informed the assembled runners that after organising the race for 25 years Peter Jebb was standing down as race organiser. this being his last race in charge and asked for a round of applause in appreciation of his years of service. This was answered by warm applause from all present. Wharfdale Harriers have taken up the reins for future events.

Peter set us off straight into the steep climb which quickly strung the field out into a long line. I found myself 5th out of 5 clayton starters with Ivan [Whigham ] and Mark [Nutter] already out of sight! Peter [ Dugdale ] and Andy [Firth] were locked in battle 50M ahead, then 80M, steadily pulling away. Being passed by “Sumo”[ Andy Holden ] was a kick up the backside and I began to gain a few places. Through the broken crag above Hag Dyke and onto the marshy ground beyond I picked up a couple more before the leaders began to fly past in the opposite direction, heading for the finish, the first few very close together and pointing to a tight contest, amongst them Victoria Wilkinson of Bingley Harriers looking secure as first lady in this leading group.

Andrew Firth at the Great Whernside Fell Race. Photo by Scott Leach

Andrew Firth at the Great Whernside Fell Race. Photo by Scott Leach

By this time Ivan had a clear lead over Mark with Peter and Andy still having a battle that wasn`t resolved until the final steep descent where Andy used his trademark descending skills to open a gap to take 3rd Clayton.

Some way back up the course I was enjoying quite a good descent too picking up a few more places and chasing to the finish to complete the tough but enjoyable outing.

Unofficial times: Ivan Whigham 41.00, Mark Nutter 45.37, Andrew Firth 46.59 Peter Dugdale 47.09, Andrew Walmsley 52.02.

Jedburgh 3 Peaks Ultra & RunFurther Update

Congratulations to Martin Terry, this year’s Runfurther MV50 winner Martin Terry and 6th overall in the competition. Andy Armstrong was 44th and Nicholas Olszewski was 45th. The three of them as a team came 5th. Well done!

At Jedburgh, Martin came in 22nd in 5:58:54 in the Jedburgh 3 Peaks Ultra, and took the race MV50 trophy.

This was the 12th and last of the 2015 Runfurther Championship races, and it really was a belter.  The start location was in Jedburgh. There were marshals and supporters everywhere, and the reception at the finish was quite something, with everyone cheered in by name over the PA as they approached the finish, to a chorus of cheers, yelps and handclaps.

The route has great views, and is mainly very runnable.  It starts with an offroad half-marathon, predominantly on an old Roman road and then along the banks of the River Tweed.  That is followed by a stiff fell race over the Eildon hills, then another half-marathon back, mainly on the same route you came out on.  Conditions were good, despite the poor weather forecast: there was a spell of rain early on, but it soon cleared, and we even had a bit of sun later on.  It was a bit muddy in places, but we’re used to that aren’t we?

Accrington 10K

Hundreds of runners took part in the Accrington 10k road race’s 30th anniversary event. Former Olympian Ron Hill also joined runners for the start of the race but nfortunately due to injury he was only able to do a couple of miles before he had to retire.

Starting out on Burnley Road by the Whitakers Arms pub, the race takes on a challenging 10-kilometre course, which winds through Huncoat and Clayton-le-Moors before finishing at Accrington Cricket Club on Thorneyholme Road.

18 Clayton-le-Moors Harriers took part in this popular local 10K road race. Matthew Duckworth was our first finisher taking 5th place overall in a time of 38:28. Phil Hall followed not long after in 8th place and with a time of 39:01. Stephen Hall was our third finisher in 15th place with a time of 40:10. These three made up the 1st place mens team so well done to all three!

Our first lady was Fabienne Richmond who was fourth lady finisher with a time of 43:47.

Matthew Duckworth Reports

For me it was a no brainier to run this as soon as l so the route, as it take us through our namesake. It was a fantastic race that was well marshalled and very well supported, which was a very big boost on the 2 mile long hill coming out of Altham. It was a good result for the club winning the male team prize and on a personal note a great achievement for me after running my first XC the day before, I wasn’t expecting such a good result!

Andy Bradley reports

Third year running for one of my favourite races the Bronte Way, perfect running weather and plenty of familiar faces at the Aisled Barn at Wycoller. An unusual one way race which needs a bit of organisation in order to get to the start at Wycoller and back from the finish at Howarth, (the coach has to be booked well in advance), the number of runners asking for lifts back suggests that not everyone had thought this through! Just short of 8 miles of fell and trail over the moor tops makes for a great run, especially when there is no rain and hail en route. A quick dash up the final cobbled street, hand over your beer token for a pint of Timothy Taylors and a post mortem on the race with fellow runners, what could be better? Oh yes a chip butty on the way home, love this race!!

Report from Paul Walsh

This was a friendly well organised, well marshalled event, with plenty of encouragement from them. It was a cold day and the course is a mostly rural figure of 8 with a few shallow climbs. Goody bag at finish included a banana, apple, kit-kat, bottle of water & a red Thornton-in-Cleveleys running drinks bottle (can’t take that to Training nights!!..ha-ha) In summary, a very friendly well organised race, made better by me getting my V60 5k PB down to 25:03

Not a race at all but a social event. A 9.4 mile up and down the prom run with a chippy treat at the end. Sounds like great fun and maybe something we can all join in with next year? Ian Hargreaves and junior runners Aaron Lundie and Adam Stevenson all went along with a number of fellow runners from Burnley parkrun. It was the furthest Adam has ever run so very well done! Marathons, mountains and skylines

It’s been a bag of all sorts this week.  There was another win for fast lad Dan Balshaw with Jordan McDonald snapping at his heels in second at the Autumn Breaker. You’ve been up in the high mountains, running long in full and half marathons, hitting the Yorkshire skylines and competing in cross country. The end of summer brings no end to your running adventures.

 Valiants Half Marathon

Photo

A team of three Clayton Ladies, Elouise pemberton, Clare Wilson and Steph Hawkins took part in this half marathon

Jubilant Clayton Ladies winning team at the Valiants Half marathon

Valiants Half Marathon was a totaly different experience to any other race I have taken part in, collecting our race numbers from a farm building out in the middle of the countryside.

There where only about 80 runners taking part so it was nice that there where three Clayton ladies together at the start.

The course was very scenic and the weather was perfect which made it a very enjoyable run.

To top off getting a new half marathon PB we also won first ladies team for Clayton so all in a great success!

Report from Richard Briscoe

The Wasdale show is a popular Lakeland event where there is a shepherds meet, dog classes, hound trails and,of course most important, the fell race. The fell race is only 3 miles but you go to the top of Kirk Fell which is over 2000 feet and back down again. BOFRA organise the race and to qualify for the prizes you have to do at least 8 races, so I had to do it to qualify. The race is a fast and furious start jumping over a wooden fence and straight on the mountain. I did really well on the climb and was in a good position then on the descent it was lethal. The top of the mountain there are lots of boulders to jump unfortunately I twisted my ankle on one of them I thought it was broken so I lost quite a lot of places. The finish got nearer I was glad to finish. After the event it was good to enjoy a beer at the Wasdale Inn before going back to the campsite. Overall was a great event.

Jordan McDonald (L) and Dan Balshaw at the Autumn Breaker 10K

Jordan McDonald (L) and Dan Balshaw at the Autumn Breaker 10K

Report by Dan Balshaw

Another early Sunday get up for some, I arrived outside the Turf where I was due to pick Jordan and had to make the ‘are you up yet’ phone call (he wasn’t up!) I drove up to his house and a couple of minutes later armed with an excuse that he’d been on a double date with George, beetroot juice and a banana we were on the road to pick up Matt Duckworth.

After the warm up we lined up, my aim was to make it four podiums in four weekends, myself and Jordan came up with the plan for Jordan to stick with me for 5k and see what he had for the 2nd 5k, this kind of didn’t go to plan, after the first lap of the Stanley Park track the pace was slow and no one willing to take the lead, so at this point I took it on myself to up the pace, one lad from Liverpool who’d won on the same route in the spring came with me and kept with me, as we came through 5k in just over 17min I kicked a little to see if I could break him and managed to get a 100m gap within 30seconds, a quick look around as I left the track once again and I could see Jordan on the track in a well placed 4th

From this point It was me and the lead bike, navigating past dogs, trees, prams etc. at a cross over point at about 9km I spotted Jordan in 4th still and shortly after a speedy looking Matt giving it a ‘go on Dan’ cheer, a few minutes later I crossed the line in 34:44.7 which I was happy with on the twisty cluttered course.

I turned around after having my picture taken by the local paper and there was Jordan coming home in 2nd a high five and pat on the back, Jordan had the biggest smile on his face for a PB and second place until……….. We got the prizes of a pair of tennis socks and a size large tennis brand top! This may have been down to one thing…… as people may have noticed I was wearing an Up & Running vest (don’t worry it was still orange! Breton would have been proud!)

It’s quite political why I wore it mainly due to the race being sponsored by Sweatshop and as I’m coached by Ben Fish who used to work for them before leaving to manage Up and Running Clitheroe all though he left on good terms they didn’t let him leave with quite the same respect.

A big well done to Jordan, Matt and Ian on PBs

The first run is an undulating, out and back route along side the reservoir, the course is traffic free on country tracks and footpaths. Next comes a 30K bike ride that takes competitors on a loop through the beautiful Derbyshire Peak District on an undulating course, all on roads. With a challenging climb towards Middleton Top. The route is marshaled and signposted throughout but extra care should be taken on some of the steeper descents. Finally, after taking in the sights on your bike, competitors head out onto the out and back run, repeating the first run.

On Wednesday I was contemplating not doing the marathon due to the total lack of marathon prep, zero long runs and no carb loading planned. The newly appointed road captain (my nephew) convinced me that I should do it. My plan was to go at 6.30 pace which would bring me in at 2.50, that sort of went out of the window and I kept around 6.20 pace till it all really started hurting from 16 miles onwards. Atmosphere was great, tango man, you’ve been tango’d etc was shouted at me throughout and I got plenty of cheers for my subtle attire! I managed a 2.50.16 in the end so was very happy all things considered and DEFINITELY no more road marathons for me!

Richard Stevenson

Richard Stevenson at the finish line of the Plusnet Yorkshire marathon

Sometimes things don’t always go to plan, after months of training and some promising times in warm up races I decided to give this marathon a real go. The plan was working well as I was steadily knocking out the miles until I got 22 miles in, from then on things fell apart quite badly and was just pleased to get to the finish. Overall I’m pleased to have completed another marathon and finished with a new pb, no plans at the minute for another marathon but I did achieve a good for age qualification time for London 2017 so you never know I may just give it another go.

Perfect choice for a first marathon. Not too many there to hold you up, and plenty of other runners around for support. The Yorkshire people were fantastic and as always a well organised Jane Tomlinson event. There was a minute applause at the start for the Great North run runner David Colley who died. Overall a great first marathon for me and I am over the moon with a sub 4 hour result.

Andrew Webster

I’m glad I picked this for my first marathon; great atmosphere and well organised. The support was fantastic, people out shouting you on and offering you sweets I’m happy with a sub four for my first attempt and would recommend it. My longest run was 18 in training and I didn’t properly carb load (unless a few packets of jammy dodgers while playing c o d on line count!) the support that made me laugh was the man on his own with a sign that said ” if you think you’ve had it hard try clapping for 3 hours!!”

At last. It’s here – the latest Harrier. Sorry for the delay. I’ve been busy with Thieveley & the Fell Relays and was on holiday at the beginning of the month. To make up for the 2 months’ + wait it’s a bumper edition – 40 pages with 15 pages of results, plus all the usual features.

Relays, Road Races and Romance

Running relays on the roads and in the mountains, tearing up trail races, going long distance in ultra races, winning 10k races and fun runs. As always you are a busy bunch. Race wins, our best performance in the mountain relays for 10 years with a talented young team, and a strong presence at the National Road Relays. The future is most definitely bright!

Some Club Announcements

Junior Training – The juniors could do with some help this Thursday, we need 3-4 extra helpers if anyone’s free. It’s a 6pm start from Spirit of Sport, next to the fire station in Burnley. You won’t need to coach or do anything complicated, just run along with the group and be an extra pair of hands if needed. Contact Andy Armstrong if you can help.

Virgin London Marathon –  If any member out there has had their application for London rejected and wants to be entered into the ballot for a club place, please send your rejection letter to the club secretary, John Wilcock. If successful, you will still need to pay the normal entry fee to VLM.

Clayton Harriers Social Evening with Guest Speaker Denise Park
On Friday 30th October we are holding a social evening at Padiham Football Club, at which the highly respected physio Denise Park will be attending to give a talk / questions and answers session on the Recognition and Prevention of Running Injuries.

The evening is aimed at all levels of runners – from beginners to experienced, from young to old. I’m sure all our running members – whether still competing or now just running socially / training could benefit from the pearls of wisdom that Denise can pass on, that maybe the difference between a good winter season of training and a miserable (and grumpy) winter season!

The evening starts at 8.00pm with a small cost of £2.00 per person – payable on the night
Can you please let me know if you plan to attend by emailing me at mgreenwood1969@outlook.com, ringing me on 01254 237485, or by posting a message on the Clayton Facebook page – just so we have an idea of numbers.

Coniston Trail Races

Club member David Black was our sole representative at this 15km trail race in the Lake District. He finished in 91st place with a time of 1:19:33.

216 runners took part in this race which the organisers, Lakeland Trails, describe as following circuits along well marked and marshalled footpaths and bridleways, taking in panoramic views of Lake Coniston and the surrounding peaks of the Old Man, Swirl How, Wetherlam and Dow Crags. Underfoot conditions are generally good for those used to off road running, although there is one short 200m section after approx 4km on the 15km routes which only agile mountain goats will be able to run!

Ladies’ Road Captain Angela Shian reports;

We were Birmingham bound, taking the long route to the start – it pays to recce the route first to find the start. Laura Hesketh had an amazing start on leg 1, getting us to 36th position. Claire Vincent leg 2 head it well for us. Leg 3 was myself; I pushed as hard as I could, out of my comfort zone! Then handed the last leg to my little sister, Helena to pull back any places I lost! Clayton ladies came 47th , very respectable place In the nationals, really looking forward to qualifying again for next year

Isle of Man Ultra

Long distance adventures in the Isle of Man for Paul Thompson and Simon Halliday. This is the penultimate race in the Run Further Championships which classifies this ultra a ‘short’ race. Short it most certainly isn’t! It’s 31 miles with 8500feet of climbing. 73 runners completed this tough event.

Excellent results for both of our runners. Paul Thompson finished in 4th place, 1st V40, with a time of 5:32:23 and Simon Halliday was 9th with a time of 5:59:45.

Rivington Trail Half Marathon

Six club members took part in this popular trail half marathon taking in Rivington, Yarrow and Anglezark reservoirs and White Coppice on a scenic route.

Our first finisher was Andy Bradly, who sends this report;

Perfect running conditions, if a little misty to enjoy the views on Saturday. I was joined at the start by 5 other Clayton members a quick chat and off! Nice undulating course no real killer hills and good underfoot. Managed to be about 30 secs slower than last year but it was my first race as a V50! Highlight of the event was seeing the Burnetts cross the line together it must be love if you can get a half marathon entry as an anniversary present and finish together smiling, surely there was a heated debate somewhere on the way round! Recommended event, hope to do it again next year with a bit more orange on display.

Team Clayton

L-R Rachel Todd, Michelle Butschok, Helen Burnett and Dave Burnett at the Rivington Trail Half Marathon.

Romance was in the air as Helen and Dave Burnett were running the event to celebrate their wedding anniversary. Ahh… this is what Helen had to say;

Following on from Hendon Brook and GNR training Michelle suggested that we do a half marathon off road and the Rivington Trail Half seemed a good choice. As it was mine and Dave’s wedding anniversary and his first half marathon we decided to run together.

The four of us travelled together cursing Michelle for what seemed like a bad idea at that point, after such an early foggy start. At the start we met up with fellow Claytoners Andy Bradley and Martin Griffin. Andy was returning for his second year and gave us some pointers about the route (where to expect the hills).

The route has a good 1 mile climb at the beginning and short climb just after mile 10 but apart from that was a lovely route meandering through woodland and trails and round the edges of the reservoirs.

Dave and I ran the route together managing not to bicker and the old romantic held my hand for the sprint finish across the line.

It was a well organised event and all finishers got a T shirt and goodie bag so it made the entry fee good value. We were all on a high at the end, pleased with our performances and now praising Michelle for her choice!

Burnley Fire Station 10K

There was an excellent turnout of 27 Clayton-le-Moors Harriers at this popular local 10k despite it’s proximity to the National Road Relays and the clash with the Hodgson Brothers Mountain Relay.  Our road runners were in fine form with a resounding win from Dan Balshaw.  Jonathan Pye, Matthew Duckworth and Paul Brannon all made top ten finishes.

Hodgson Brothers Mountain Relay

The relay is in memory of Ian Hodgson, who at the aged 25 was tragically killed in a road accident whilst cycling the day after winning the score class at the Karrimor Mountain Marathon in 1985. Prior to the presentation Jon Broxap, from the organising team announced that Ian’s brother, Michael (57) had suffered a cardiac arrest whilst out cycling in August and never regain consciousness. The family and organised team had decided to rename the relay The Hodgson Brothers Relay.

Our A team finished in 18th position with an overall time of: 4:14:12. Our Vet team finished in 38th place with an overall time of 4:47:33. The Clayton ‘Z’ team were 55th with a time of 5:13:35. Our ladies team were 68th overall with a time of 5:27:33. Only 10 ladies teams took part and our ladies were 8th.

Ladies Fell Captain Kath Brady reports

We finished 8th out of 10 extremely competitive ladies teams, in a time of 5 hours 27 minutes, 19 minutes quicker than 2014

1 Linda Lord & Katy Thompson 56.05

2 Wendy Dodds & Avril Duckworth 1.36:56

3 Alison Dugdale & Anna Kelly 1.15:47

4 Jean Brown & Claire Vincent 1.38:45

Thanks must go to Jean Brown who did all the hard work in pulling the team together. I just collected and handed out numbers on the day. Thanks to all 8 ladies for racing hard. Special note must go to Claire Vincent running strong on the last leg with Jean in her first ever race in the lakes.

Men’s Fell Captain Dave Motley Reports

Alarms were off early for the drive to the Lakes, registration and at 9:15am its GO GO GO!. The lads had a really good start with Jordan Mcdonald and Jonny Mckenna bringing the team home in 7th. Next up Danny & Dave Bagot who completed the leg with no navigational issues but they did finish one buff down (I’ll let Danny tell that story ). Me & Lee Smith next and we had a solid run to pass the baton onto Chris & Jacob who brought the team home in 18th place. The vets finished in 38th (8th Vets) which was fantastic performance with the problems I had sorting the team.

Looking at the results I am reliable informed that the A team posted the quickest Clayton time for 10 years, which is a massive positive and the majority of the team were under 25! This really shows the progression of the club in the last couple of years.

I’d like to say a massive Thanks to all the lads but special Thanks goes to Sean Clare & Geoff Gough we were called up on 48hr notice due to injuries in the vets team. Cheers boys and here’s to an even quicker time in 2016!!!

Dominic Carr, Vets Team report

It was cool with a chill in the air before the start of leg 1 of the Ian Hogson mountain relay. Nerves were starting to jangle. We had a last minute drop out for the leg 1 vets team; Andy McFarlane, hamstring, and I was to run with club legend Geoff Gough. He’d been out injured for a while, but class is class so I was worried about keeping up. As usual the nerves went when we set off, and I managed to set the pace which was good. A fast first mile left me wishing for a steeper gradient and my wish soon came true, as me and Geoff traded places back and forth with Rossendales Mick Toman. The recce paid off as I was able to pick the better of the lines as the file of runners in front invariably split in places with route choice up to individual teams.

Dominic Carr and Geoff Gough (No. 19) at the Hodgson Brothers Mountain Relay

We made the first Checkpoint in 27 mins, and had boxed off most of the climb, with a very steep grassy descent to come, which didn’t disappoint. Final Checkpoint at the bottom and a very fast run in on metalled cart track where me and Geoff really dropped the hammer and picked off a couple of teams. We finished fizzing with adrenaline and (for me) relief we acquitted ourselves okay. 3 year in the making running ambition ticked off; nothing else beats running in the lakes and I’ve always wanted to do the Ian Hogson. Hope I make next year’s squad now!! Placed 35th out of 70 teams and 46:35.

Hands, knees and bumpsadaisy

We get knocked down but we get up again! Cross Country season has kicked off with some great results for the club and there have a few bumps and bruises too. Also this week, you have been branching out into cyclo-cross and triathlons and doing rather well. As always you have been spotted on the roads, trails and fells and the track to as lots of you came together for the AGM track meet.

Your Team Captains 2015/16

There are some changes to the team captains.  Angela Shian and Irene Roche are continuing their roles of Road and Cross Country Ladies Captains respectively. Jean Brown has stepped down from the Fell position and Kath Brady is now the Ladies Fell Captain.

North West Junior Triathlon Series

Eleanor and Grace Root completed the NW Junior Triathlon series on 19th September, clocking up 19 Aquathlons/Triathlons between them. They competed in Carlisle, cycling on a tough grass course where Ellie managed to pick up a 3rd place. In the final race of the season at Salt Ayre in Lancaster, Grace put in a strong performance to come 12th in the T1’s with big sister Ellie coming 9th in a really strong field of T2’s. Both girls have worked very hard and are looking forward to the presentation evening in January where they will be able to celebrate completing the series.

AGM Club Track Races

Over 60 club members of all ages turned up at Seedhill track for a set of track races.

For the younger members, there was a 2k (5 lap) race held first. 20 youngsters took part. Dexta and Liberty easily took the top 2 positions, using the shorter distance as a warm up event for the racing they would be doing over the weekend. It was a first time race for a number of our younger members and they all looked to be enjoying the competition immensely, so much so that Emily Johnson got quite carried away and  completed an extra lap!

Ryan Clarke had a blistering run, hotly pursued by fellow juniors Simon Wilshaw and Lennon Jackson. Eleanor Root lead the girls race. They certainly gave the seniors a run for their money. First seniors were Angela Shian and Alison Dugdale with Andy Quinn leading in the senior men.

Red Rose Cross Country League – Astley Park

What a tremendous start to the cross country season! An excellent turnout of juniors meant we were able to field teams in the U11 Girls, U11 Boys, U13 Girls, U13 Boys (one of our runners is missing from the results) and U17 Men. We earned some great team positions with first places for U11 Boys, U13 Girls, U17 Men, and Over 45 Ladies. Second place positions for our Senior Men, Over 40 Men and Over 55 Ladies.

There were some great individual performances as well. Dexta Thompson won the U11 Boys race with Jenson Bentham and Finlay Stubbs finishing in the top 10 to make their 1st place team position. Millie Stubbs and Liberty Thompson finished in the top ten in the U13 Girls race. Jackson McKay was 3rd in the U13 boys. Top ten finishes were the order of the day for our U17 Men team as well. Helena Leathley was our first Clayton lady finisher and new Men’s Cross Country Captain, Christopher Holdsworth, was our first Clayton male finisher. Barry Mitchell and Richard Lawson were 1st and 3rd Vet 70 men.

Alas! Three trips to the medics with a dodgy knee, a turned ankle and a fall. Everyone is  doing well, no lasting damage and, more importantly, all eager to come back and race another day!

This was my 2nd attempt at Thieveley Pike Fell Race; loved it the 1st time and it didn’t disappoint this time round. There was great weather for it and a great turnout. The 3rd hill is still a tough sting in the tail but I managed to pass a couple up the hill and beat last year’s time, as did my fellow Claytoner Rachel Todd so smiles all round!

English Schools Fell Championship race took place at Mytholmroyd. Jackson Mckay was up against the fantastic Bofra runners that he has been chasing all fell season (Fraser Sproul ,Sam Smith and Alexander Thompson). He managed to beat 2 of them to come 3rd. Fraser 1st and a boy from Bradford 2nd. A fantastic achievement as it was 3k with unforgiving hills. Well done Jackson xx

She reports;

It was a very well organised, friendly, and welcoming event. Unfortunately, I hadn’t put the training in and so didn’t perform greatly. I finished in 1 hour 54. But that didn’t matter – it was a learning curve and a very enjoyable one at that. The great thing about a triathlon is that you all start at different times and so whilst out on the course no one really knows where you are position wise and everyone is so friendly. I will definitely be signing up for more.. with a little more preparation next time.

Described by the organisers as a fast and picturesque course that is run on good runnable roads, paths and some country lanes. The course, after the first start section is on a small gradual decline in terms of elevation. This makes the race feel down hill and makes for a really enjoyable running experience.

Tuesday 15 September

Club Handicap Race
The race was based on last week’s Coppice Race (the last of the Summer Series). In effect the last runner in the race sets off first on a zero time and then the rest of the field set off on the time difference achieved last week – in other words last week’s winner sets off last on a time difference equal to that achieved last week – so Alan Life won last week and was 24 minutes 20 seconds in front of Sue Allen. In theory all the runners should cross the finish line on the same time.

Ladies 4-Stage Races

Report from Ladies Captain, Angela Shian

Clayton had 12 lady runners compete at a sunny Stanley Park on Saturday. It was so hot we even had to take off our renowned orange hoodies…! We had a few nerves in the 3 teams, as most or our runners had not competed in relays of this kind before! A special well done to leg 1 ladies; Laura, Amanda & Elouise, as this is by far the most nerve racking stage.

Clayton Ladies at the Northern Road Relays

Clayton Ladies at the Northern Road Relays

We did have a marshal trip up one of our competitors – Bianca Bennett (I wont repeat her language at the end!!!). Unbelievably, we were also told off for the noise volume of “cheering” our ladies in (Rachel Todd).

There were 62 teams competing in total – Our first Team came 23rd which now qualifies us for the National road relays championships at Birmingham! Team 2 came 44th position, and Team 3 came 57th position. All in all cracking day and effort by the ladies, roll on next year!

Mens 6-Stage Races

Report From Chris Holdsworth

The improvements made between 2014 and 2015 6-Stage Road Relays has been excellent. Having raced at both, it was great to be able to see our teams compete for places throughout the day.

I had a poor personal performance having been too eager to get us off to a good start, but the rest of the lads were able to keep our position with some solid performances throughout.

Finishing the day in 31st place, we narrowly missed out on qualifying for the National relays having fallen out of the top 25 requirement.

However, on another day I believe we’d have had enough quality to qualify which is very encouraging. With an improvement of over 50 places from 2014, I’m sure we’ll continue that trend in to 2016 and beyond!

OMM Lite

Congratulations to Ralph Baines on his win over the weekend at the OMM Lite Long Score event- Reeth, Swaledale

Report from Ralph Baines

Ralph Baines WInner of the OMM Lite Long Score event.

Ralph Baines at the OMM Lite.

Having done a few Orienteering score events this year and really enjoyed them I was asked by my brother-in-law Barry to partner him on this. It was a two-day score event, 7 hours on Saturday north of the river and 5 hours Sunday south, but without the usual OMM overnight camp and carrying your tent/food etc.

It was beautiful weather and a good selection of people doing both the mountain biking and orienteering. We spent a good 5 minutes marking the scores on the map and deciding which route to set off on, this turned out to be time well spent since through the weekend we managed to get lots of the high value checkpoints. After about 5 hours I was, as usual, starting to get really tired and the cramp kicked in but plenty of determination and encouragement from Barry got us to the finish where I could have a sit down and be served tea and cake in the sunshine, and be unable to get out of the chair for 20 minutes! The pain was eased by the fact we were winning, if only by 10 points. I texted my wife Naomi to tell here the good news but with the caveat that there wasn’t a hope in Christmas of us holding the place for the following day.

Day 2 and a large bacon sandwich, to replace some lost salt, and lots of tea just before being first to set off worked a treat and didn’t feel too bad after we had done the climb up to Grinton Lodge YHA and got onto the beatiful grouse moors up there. Lots more points came and the time seemed to pass much quicker albeit I did feel slower still. Anyway we got 22 miles in which I was more than impressed with and we had to sit and wait for an hour to see who beat us. Nobody did, we were second on the day and extended our lead so got to go and receive the prizes, one for overall winners and one for the vets. So after 25 years running it has taken until now for my first win. Thanks to Barry for encouraging me round.

Well done to Jacob Boyle who competed in the Bronze medal winning, junior GB men’s team at this prestigious event. He reports;

Wow what a hectic couple of days. Down at the World Mountain Running Championships and met all the squad getting to know them before the event. Met some amazing people and made some great friends. The race didn’t go how I wanted to but I can now go away and train even harder. Was really proud to represent Great Britain. My team mates did absolutely amazing helping us become the bronze medalists for the worlds. So inspiring to see some of the team getting individual medals and great news at the fact we all came away with a World Championship medal. Well done team GB. Hope to see you all soon

Report from Sarah Helliwell

Carl was either 15th or 16th out of 51 runners. He went hard and managed to keep up with the front runners on the way up, however the Lakeland lads showed their skill on the way back down, as he lost roughly 4 or 5 places. This was his first Lakeland fell race and it was a steep sharp nasty one of just under 700m of climbing, then descending in 4.5miles. He said the brief 5 seconds he had to admire the view was pretty impressive. He thoroughly enjoyed it and is hoping to do some more Lakeland fell races.

Lancaster Castle 10k

Report from Dan Balshaw

After the 6 Leg relays, and a moment of madness, I turned up for the Lancaster Castle 10k; an out and back course finishing with a nasty little hill, before the finish line in the castle grounds. When I went to pay my fees and get my number I was directed into the old prison which has got to be the strangest place I’ve ever seen a race registration.

When the race started along with the Half Marathon, I somehow managed to create a lead from the off and after hitting 5k in 17m20 I was a bit surprised that no one had come with me. At the turning point I had a good 30 seconds over 2nd place (who’d also done the relays), and tried to make more of this only to literally run into someone coming the other way. Despite my efforts of shouting and letting people know I was coming, one headphone-wearing runner got in the way. I managed to get going again and claim the win finishing 50 seconds ahead of 2nd and was one slow cooker better off. It was a good day for Clayton, with Richard Stevenson winning the Half Marathon and a Microwave.

Lancaster Castle Half Marathon

Report from Richard Stevenson

It was a bit confusing at the start of the race, as we started alongside the 10k runners so didn’t have a clue who was running what until the 10k turned around to head back.

At that point I found myself at the front with another runner so took it steady and stuck with the planned pace and soon found myself pulling away.Tried to keep it steady and not panic and the plan worked perfectly all the way back to the finish.

First ever race win and a new PB to boot. Roll on Yorkshire Marathon in 3 weeks!

Parkrun roundup

Looks like we stayed pretty local this week as far as parkruns go; perhaps because of all the other events many of you took part in over the weekend. A big turn out as usual at Burnley with plenty of PBs and top ten finishes. Well done to Dexta who continues to improve and push for faster times – and he’s only 9! Lots of good runs from the juniors who are getting ready for the cross country season that kicks off next week. There was a trio of first time visits to the Witton parkrun and a trio of returners producing more PBs and great placings.

Sad News – Michael Wrigley 1944 – 2015

Martin Brady writes;

I was sorry to hear the sad news about the death of Michael Wrigley. He was a true member of Clayton-le-Moors Harriers and always wanted the best for the club. I remember racing with him in the early 80’s when he regularly would do sub 60 minutes for 10 miles. He was easy to identify then with his green and white celtic style top under his Clayton vest. When he became unable to run he could be seen at many local races supporing the club e.g. Hendon Brook, Three Peaks etc. When my brother died in 1986 aged 23 he was one of the people who carried his coffin. Rest in peace Mick.

His funeral will take place on Friday, 25th September, at 2:20pm at Burnley Crematorium and after at the Rosegrove Club. No flowers and donations to Friends of Marsden Park.
