A Winning Start

What a great way to kick off 2016! Medals galore at the Lancashire Cross Country Championships from U11s to Vet runners. A great turnout of Clayton-le-Moors Harriers with runners in all categories and a successful day for the club. That’s not all; you have also been out on the roads, parks and fells as always.

Saturday 9 January

Lancashire Cross Country Championships

We had an excellent turnout for the Lancashire Cross Country Championships at Witton Park in Blackburn. We put in some excellent performances and left with plenty of medals and smiles from an enjoyable championship competition.

We had Gold medals for both the U11 Girls and Boys events for Dexta Thompson and Ella Dorrington. Katy Thompson was 1^st lady Vet 60.

Silver Medals for U20 Jordan McDonald, Louisa Powell- Smith (2^nd L35), Karin Goss (2^nd L65), U11 Boys Team and the Vet Mens Team. Jordan McDonald nd Louisa Powell-Smith earning themselves a Lancashire Vest.

Bronze medals for Susan Allen (3^rd L55), Christine Leathley (3^rd L65) and the Clayton Ladies Team

A great set of results for our ladies with new member Louisa Powell-Smith storming to a 7^th place finish and first Clayton Lady. She was the 2^nd L35 and earned herself a Lancashire vest to boot. Laura Hesketh and Helena Leathley gave the ladies team third place. Katy Thompson claimed 1^st L60 with awards for fellow lady vets Karin Goss, Susan Allen and Christine Leathley.

Sunday 10 January

Garstang 10K

A trio of Clayton-le-Moors Harriers took part in this 10K in Garstang in a field of over 500 runners. Some last minute pumping out on the waterlogged course enabled the event to go ahead. First Clayton finisher was Jacob Watson who finished in 15^th place with a time of 37:47. Newcomer Daniel Isherwood was 50^th in 40:39 and the trio was completed by Colin White who finished 195^th with a time of 47:30.

Happy New Year

Happy New Year! Despite widespread flooding and race cancellations all over the Christmas period, plenty of Clayton-le-Moors Harriers still managed to get out and about. Competing in races unaffected by floods, parkrunning doubles or finishing the Marcothon/Run Every Day December challenges.

Lancaster Festive 4K

Well done Julie Toman, our only runner in this event. She finished in 83^rd place with a time of 20:10. 230 Runners took part.

Wansfell Race

Described by organisers, Ambleside AC, as not to be under estimated despite being short and sweet. The route is very steep and extremely rough underfoot. Slippery, wet conditions can make the descent treacherous and if the mist is down the ability to navigate is essential. Please also be aware that the road section at the beginning and end will not be closed to cars although it will be marshalled. Runners must take great caution especially when descending at speed and negotiating blind corners. Despite the horrendous flooding in the area, the race went ahead.

Wansfell race went ahead on the 27th in stunning clear, mild conditions. Very wet under foot, slippy and loose on the descent. 125 runners started including three Clayton, myself, Andy Firth and one other chap I’d not met and didn’t get the chance to meet! No results posted as yet, not found any pics either although I definitely saw a posh camera or two! Cracking little race, although i was over a minute slower than last year

Up The Nab

Wendy Dodds was our sole runner in this Peak District race from Glossop Rugby Club. A 4 mile route with 1197ft of climb.

Auld Lang Syne Fell Race

A great run from Chrisopher Holdsworth earned him fourth place in this hugely popular end of the year fell race organised by Woodentops. Over 400 runners took part in this 6 mile race with 984ft of ascent with the elite runners being followed by runners in some fantastic fancy dress outfits. A fast and fun end to the fell running year for many.

Billy Knox New Year’s Day Awakener

Colin Robinson receive an award today from Andy O’Sullivan MBE for 60 years of outstanding service to Rochdale Harriers at the Billy Knox New Years Day multi terrain Race. A baker’s dozen (13) Clayton-le-Moors Harriers kicked off the new year with this trail 5K. First finisher was John Roche in 32nd place with a time of 23:35. First lady was Vicky Heys in 62nd place with a time of 26:40.

Wendy Dodds and I were Clayton’s representatives on a cool and slightly icy course. Run of the day was by Victoria Wilkinson of Bingley Harriers (and Denise Park’s Practice) who took the ladies record by over three minutes and came 3rd overall.

Sheffield Open Cross Country Event

Report from Chris Thompson

Yesterday we went to Sheffield for the open cross country races. Having been to plenty of races in Yorkshire last year, although mainly being fell, I expected this to be a good turnout. We arrived at Graves Park and it looked a little quiet. When we collected the kids numbers I could see that not so many had registered so was hoping for more people to pay on the day. We walked the course which I can say was a very well marked out and challenging one; some parts quite muddy with some good twists and turns and some steep hill climbs.

First to race was Dexta whose course was a little longer than a normal under 11’s race with this being 2.5k. Nothing he hasn’t done before though. He put in a good run and finished second.

Then Liberty raced the same course and finished in 8th position.

It’s almost Christmas and the festive spirit is certainly in evidence both in donning fancy dress and giving generously to our Cumbrian Neighbours ( our donations are currently at £685 – you can donate here )

Tour de Helvellyn – Report by Nicholas Olszewski

It all started at 05:30 Saturday morning when I picked up Martin Terry. As we drove towards the Lakes up the M6, the weather deteriorated with every mile with driving rain and horrendous winds. I think then we both knew we were in for a challenging day on the fells.

Having checked in and gone through a rigorous kit check I finally set off, leaving Martin to go through the kit check as I knew he would catch me up somewhere on route and hopefully we’d finish roughly the same time. Stepping outside it was still slightly dark and raining still. The route to Howtown was relatively easy going underfoot, just the high winds and rain to contend with. The first control point is at Martindale church, with then a small road section towards Boardale and over Boardale House heading towards control 2 at Side Farm. This was when it all started to turn into gill scrambling as the amount of water that was emanating from god knows where was unbelievable; that coupled with the gusty headwind made it a gruelling assent over to Patterdale.

At control 2 we had to be diverted slightly due to the flooding and route being too deep in water, so a slight deviation was taken and I soon found my way heading towards control 3, Swart Beck footbridge, which is on the way up to Sticks Pass on Helvellyn, in the middle of nowhere. As I dibbed in I thanked the marshals for being here in these horrendous conditions. All was going well, it was a slog but I felt fine and as I headed over Sticks Pass and down the other side the rain began to ease off and yes, the sun did come out for a while and control 4, Stannah Beck footpath was duly dibbed.

The next two controls, 5 and 6 were possibly the worst as we traversed the foot of Helvellyn. The flood damage was clearly visible, massive mud and rock slides had to be negotiated along with some hairy river crossings as all the foot bridges had been destroyed, lying in bits further down the fell side. I’m still amazed that no one was hurt or even washed away at some of these crossings as the ferocity was not to be taken lightly. Raise Beck was possibly the worst for me as I leaped in, throwing all caution to the wind and cracking my shin on an underwater rock. It was the only way I could get across to the other side and make the assent to Grisdale Tarn and back down to Patterdale, then follow the outward route back to Askham Community Centre.

Climbing out of Patterdale over to Boardale the wind began to pick up again, very nearly whipping my legs from beneath me, so strong and very slippy underfoot as I cautiously navigated my way down to lower ground. Arriving back at Askham in a time of 8:15 in 29^th positon, well chuffed with that, and better than last year, although last year was a slightly different route, Martin had a great run, coming 10^th in a time of 7:31, a great day, but both mentally and physically draining.

One more challenge left in the day, driving back down the M6 in this horrendous weather.

Sunday 20 December

Rudolf Red Nose 5

Seven club members took part in this 5 mile multi-terrain race around Blackpool. The event is run on property access roads and around a golf course on purpose built trail and includes section of caravan park perimeter road and short field section. The race HQ is a local fire station located 400 metres away from the course start and finish which are both on a closed car park used during the week for main hospital staff parking and at weekends as overspill for the Blackpool Zoo who do not require it on this date. The race also raises funds for the local Hospice by taking donations for the refreshments provided before and after the race

If Wendy (Dodds) had hoped by coming south to avoid the Lakeland floods she failed as several sections of the course were awash at the back of the De Vere. A sea of green and red Santas and Elves made me think it was I who was in fancy dress in my club vest as we set off , observed by noisy sea-lions, a conspicuous albino wallaby and a threatening pack of wolves. The ubiquitous Julie Toman and Martin Brady braved the course and we had four age group winners in Steve Biscomb M60, Wendy Dodds W65, Val Lawson W70 and Richard Lawson M75. The Stoop Fell Race

All competitors receive a free Santa hat that they must run in! There is also a “Festive Fancy Dress” competition with ‘Cadbury Xmas Choc stocking’ for the best 8 costumes. Fourteen club members donned the Santa hat to take part in this 5 mile race with 820ft of climb.

Great morning out at Penistone hill for the stoop quarry runs. Brilliant fancy dress and even got some treats at the chocolate throw out at the end. Briony came 1st under 14s girl, but is still suffering from a sore foot injury from September.

All Dressed Up

After another week of appalling weather and floods, and quite a few race cancellations, it was a welcome relief for our club members to let off some steam in fancy dress at the Hurst Green Turkey Trot. There has also been some road and fell running as well as some rather soggy parkrunning this week. Well done to everyone that braved the elements this weekend.

Hurst Green Turkey Trot

Even more fancy dress than last year although rumour has it the mud wasn’t much worse! The Hurst Green Turkey Trot is a wonderfully silly affair that gets all competitors really in the festive party mood. 27 club members took part with some of them taking part for the first time and promising to return next year. It’s worth noting that there was someone dressed up as a famous Clayton-le-Moors Harrier too; imitation they say is the sincerest form of flattery.

Following the usual great build up and planning for this year’s Turkey Trot, the event certainly delivered lots of fun and laughs as well as a last minute appeal to raise funds for the Cumbrian flood damage. On day entrants paid £10 which went straight into the fund bucket! Excellent thinking on behalf of the race organiser.

Most of the competitors were in fancy dress ranging from nativity story, Santa Claus, cross dressing, babies and many more. The route was obviously wet and muddy due to all the rain but this only lent to more fun. Totally enjoyed by all.

Another great day out at the TT on Sunday with Team Clayton leading the party charge. Too many great costumes to mention with some dressing for warmth (Andy Bradley in his dragon onesie), some dressing for a stellar performance (Irene, Angela, Vicky and Julia), some running incognito (in a red morph suit) and some looking like they’d just come straight from a night out (see pictures of Andy Braithwaite).

First prize went to Sean Clare and his co wise men (reference is to the costumes) complete with trio of camels and authentic looking beards). Skipper Motley being a true pro gave me a few tips on how best to run in a full face beard without ingesting it. An excellently organised race with a good amount of money raised in support of the Cumbria floods.

We took our 4 children to run the annual Turkey Trot junior race and it all started well. Dexta came in first with another boy behind him. There is quite often a gap between Dexta and the next group of runners but after a few minutes we all started to think something wasn’t quite right, no one else was returning. After 5 mins we realised the rest must have missed the turning point and carried on however what we didn’t expect was that they would run and run and run in total 5 miles!

It was over 50mins before they all came back and there were some very worried parents. I was even thinking I might need to ring mountain rescue up! Thankfully they all returned safe but I think the organisers might be in hiding from angry parents.

Longridge Xmas Pudding 7

Five club members chose to head over to Longridge for the seven mile race at Longridge. Richard Stevenson was our first finisher in 14th place with a time of 44:18.

After Guys 10 had been cancelled the week before, and on checking the weather forecast, I made a last minute decision to run the Longridge Xmas Pudding Race. It was a short drive over to registration where I met Martin and Jon on a brief warm up.

I did this race a couple of years ago and remember it being hilly but must have blanked out how long the climb up Jeffrey Hill was! It’s a good course of pretty much 4 miles up followed by a very quick 3 miles back down.

A little disappointed on the climbs where I seemed to struggle more than I should but overall happy with nearly 2 minutes knocked off my previous time and the little Xmas pudding given to you at the end.

Mytholmroyd Fell Race

This 6.2 mile fell race with 1350 ft of ascent is mainly run over open moorland. Peter Browning and Linda Bostock were our sole representatives in this tough late season race ( most of you were bog snorkling in fancy dress around Hurst Green).

Under 90 runners set off on the 6.2 miles Mytholmroyd fell race, on a cold but mercifully dry December Sunday morning. Clayton were represented by Linda Bostock and Peter Browning. A steep climb up through the woods led to a long queue at an early kissing gate but a chance to get the breath back. Once up high on the moors, the route was fast and fairly level, though very wet in places. The second climb brought us back over the moors before the steep descent to the finish. Everyone seemed to get back safely, and for the record the men’s and women’s races were run by athletes from Pudsey & Bradley and Calder Valley respectively.

Peak Raid – Round 4 Crowden

Sunday saw the final event in the 2015 series of 3 hour mountain marathons. This is a score format event with competitors visiting as many check points as possible is the 3 hour time limit. Katy Thompson has been competing in this series of score events in the Peak District over the year and sends this short report.

Peak Raid is a series of four 3 hour score events in the Peak District, using maps specially produced for the event. Prizes for the series are based on the best score from 3 events. The final round on Sunday was from Crowden Outdoor Centre. Lots of bog and tussocks but also more paths than I had expected. With hindsight I could have got more points as I finished early, but there’s a big incentive not to go over time – 50 points a minute penalty! I’ve managed to be first in my category in each of the events I’ve done, but having to miss one round meant I had to include my points from the first round where my shoe fell apart, so I didn’t manage to win the series prize. Next year’s events are already in the fell calendar for October to December next year; it would be good to see a few more Clayton competing.

A Hard Rain is Gonna Fall

Despite the devastating floods of the weekend and the cancellation of many events, there was still quite a lot of action to report on this week. Cross country has been the mainstay of the week, with record amounts of mud at Marl Pits to contend with. There’s also been some fast 5K racing at Todmorden and a few forays on the fells.

Natasha and Bronia Olszewska took part in this event at Witton Park. Bronia ran in the Year 7 girls race and finished 23^rd. Sunday 6 December

Cardington Christmas Cracker

According to race organisers Telford Athletic Club The Cardington Cracker is an institution. Over 200 runners turn out on a cold December day to pay homage to this annual fell race as part of the traditional runners build up to Christmas. It’s 9 miles and 2,600 feet of hell but well worth it for the carrot soup followed by a few pints of Shropshire Lad in the Royal Oak.

Gravy Pud Fell Race

124 runners took part in this race. The route follows a course up on to the moors and to Lees Hill before returning via Swallows Wood. Approx 5 miles with 1000′ of climb. Ivan Whigham was our sole club runner

I was number 26 in the Gravy pud on a day that was wild and windy day and very wet under foot. I was racing neck and neck with Mick Toman of Rossendale Harriers, just managing to beat him by a split second. After completing the race three times, it is definitely one of my favourites.

Pendle Forest Orienteers – Pendle Hill Event

The organisers had planned to put out controls on Saturday daytime for both the night and day events. Storm Desmond put paid to that and the night event was cancelled. There was a Saturday inspection of the day area, especially the Ogden Clough river and stream crossings as the river level could not be predicted. It depended on the forecast overnight rain. On Inspection on the event morning, while putting out controls at 6:00AM, the organisers decided to run the courses unchanged as the crossings were tricky but not dangerous.

Pendle orienteering is more about route choice than fine navigation. Some competitors got round cleanly, but there were tales of overshooting, undershooting, too high and too low on one or more controls. Relocation can be very tricky in this apparently featureless expanse. Control placement benefitted from the new georeferenced map and precise control placement confirmed by GPS.

The courses got the best out of the area and the Black course attracted some very competent and fast competitors.

Next time, the organisers promise to start higher, go higher and treat you to the intricacies of the peat hags!

A number of our club members took part in this event.

Ralph Baines, Mark Nutter and Colin Woolford all competed in the 8.7km Black Course. Mike Wallis won the Blue 4.7km course. Jean Brown and Katy Thompson took on the Greenb 3.7km course and Junior Christopher Brown took on the 2.3km Orange Course.

There were several courses on offer, with the Black course being a challenging tour of Pendles bogs and tussocky moor land from the Reservoirs, through fell wood to the Deerstones area, before returning via Ashendean Clough, Ogden Clough, Boar Clough and in, all off path of course. Cracking conditions in the end, and milder than you would think for December.

Liverpool, Lee Mills and living to tell the tale

It was wild, windy and very wet this weekend. Yet another storm put you through the mill whether it was on exposed moorland and fells, muddy quagmires that used to be parkland,or wading through puddles that turned into mini lakes. What a tough lot you are – some of you went out in it twice, on the same day in some cases!

Mid Lancs Cross Country League – Liverpool

Great team spirit seemed very much in evidence as a good number of ladies, gents and junior runners made the trip to Liverpool for the British Cross Challenge event in Sefton Park in Liverpool. As always, this event attracts some top notch runners across all categories chasing national places so it was great to see all of our runners getting stuck in and holding their own.

Ella Dorrington and Dexta Thompson both put in superb runs finishing in 10^th and 8^th places respectively in the U11 races.

Report from Irene Roche

Well done to all Clayton-le-Moors Harriers today. Huge thanks and appreciation to Jason Pier for sorting out numbers, tents and refreshements for everyone. It was just a tad blustery on arrival and during the junior races. Things turned rather drizzle by the time we ladies set off. Not too bad for running through the mud that awaited us. Unfortunately, it was just a matter of time before heavier rain set in for the senior men’s race.

Sunday 29 November

David Staff Memorial Fell Race

The race is organised by Darwen Dashers run in memory of David Staff, who joined the Dashers as a 15 year old and competed in many fun runs as a junior. David turned 17 years of age on 5th December 1994 which then allowed him to compete as a senior for the Dashers. His first race (and last) as a senior was in the Clitheroe 10k on 27th December 1994. David collapsed and died by the road side at 5 miles from a condition called Hyperthropic Obstructive Cardiomyopathy, which in laymans terms is an abnormal thickening of the heart muscles which interrupted the electrical pulses which keeps the heart working.

This condition takes the lives of approximately 8 so-called fit and healthy young people a week, most of them are actively engaged in sport, but it is not the sport that kills; it is the exertion that acts as a trigger.

This race raises funds for Cardiac Risk in the Young, the charity that David’s father Granville actively supports. The funds raised are used to provide heart screening in the young; so far over 60 people have had heart defects identified as a result of Granville’s fund raising.

Lee Mills Fell Relays

28 brave (or, some might say crazy) runners represented Team Clayton in 7 teams at the Lee Mills Relays. 89 teams completed the gruelling event and 7 teams did not complete fully. . Conditions were awful but most of you seemed to have had a great time with a number of you having run in the British Cross Challenge at Liverpool as well. In dire weather, you are an impressive bunch; Jordan McDonald, George Pier, Dave Bagot and Danny Collinge. The future is definitely bright!

Well done in particular to the Mens A team who finished in 7th place overall with Danny Collinge and Jordan McDonald running our two fastest legs. Also Anna Kelly and Wendy Dodds who were 1st V50 and 1st V60 ladies respectively

Lee Mill Relay – Ladies Team Report by Kath Brady

We had two teams, ladies and lady vets running in wet and very windy conditions, which were forecast to get worse. Claire Vincent and Jean Brown set off on leg 1, Jean came back before Claire with tales of a well flagged route and deep bogs. Nat Walton and Anna Kelly ran leg two.

Flags were blowing away and bogs getting boggier! Vicky Heys and Alison Dugdale suffered the worst of the weather on leg 3. A mass start on leg 4 was planned for 2pm but due to deteriorating conditions we requested they brought this forward to 1.30 and missed Top of Leach trig. Angela Shian and Wendy Dodds setting off with slightly improving conditions.

On Monday at 10pm organisers are still working on results. Well done to all and thanks to Captain Dave, George and Jordan for bring the club tent and refreshments.

Manchester Christmas Pudding 5 Mile Dash

Christmas Puds and other Festive goodies were on offer plus a medal and a mince pie at at the finish. The race is a fundraiser for the Greenmount Wild Bird Hospital in Bury and took place over a 2 lap off road course using footpaths, fields and trail in Wythenshaw Park

Christopher Holdsworth, Kevin O’Brien Sophie McIntosh took part with Chris more than earning his Christmas pudding by winning the race in a time of 28:18. Kevin O’Brien (MV70) finished in 67th place in a time of 52:29 and Sophie McIntosh was 69th with a time of 53:22. 119 runners took part.

Moustaches, medals and more mud!

Another mudbath this week. After a rainy and wintry week it was a decidedly chilly and mucky affair at the Red Rose fixture in Bolton. There have been top five placings at the Todmorden 5k, FRA medals for the ladies and a first place at the MoRun event in Liverpool for Chris Holdsworth. Not to mention the roads and fells you’ve been hitting this week.

This was the second race of the series organised by Cannonball Events. A fast paced, 3 lap course around Todmorden Park. Five club members took part. FRA Presentation & Badge Bar Blast

Congratulations to our fell running ladies for taking Bronze in the British Team LV40 Championship. Team members included Jean Brown, Wendy Dodds, Linda Lord, Katy Thompson and Barbara Savage. Individual medals were also awarded to Linda Lord and Wendy Dodds.

There was also a one-off race on the afternoon of the FRA Do which is to be held at The Daffodil Hotel in Grasmere in 2015. 7 miles 2100ft (11km 700m) – The course runs up to Loughrigg summit then to Silver How summit and back the same way.

Harriers V Cyclists

A clear but cold day didn’t put people off and a record field of 280 runners and riders set off on the 5.5 mile circuit. Persistent rain for the past two weeks meant the ground was very wet and water-logged but overnight freezing temperatures and snow meant the ground was hard in certain summit locations so the debate raged as to whether the runners or the cyclists would win overall.

In the event with the first 9 to finish all being runners it became clear that the Harriers would win overall.

We had one Harrier, Jonny McKenna, and one cyclist, Paul Hesketh. Jonny had a fantastic run finishing in 8^th place ahead of the first of the cyclists.

The muddy and wintry conditions did not deter our hardy ladies who put in a determined performance to finish 6^th place for both the senior and vet teams. Helena Leathley was our first lady finisher with Orlaith O’Mahony our second. Irene Roche was our third lady and first vet lady finisher. Great to see Bianca Bennett getting stuck in after a recent trip to the warmer climes of Australia – bit of a shock to the system I should think!

Arnside Knott FR

Chris Snell and Wendy Dodds took part in this cenic course above Morecambe Bay and the Kent Estuary. Its a 5.5 mile race with 919ft of climb.

Report from Chris Snell

The race was held in Silverdale, North Lancashire. The weather was perfect and the countryside beautiful. I set off at a good pace and attempted to keep close to the front pack on the first climb out of Hollins Farm. I lost a couple of places as I turned my ankle on a rock but got going again. the terrain levelled out through the woodlands and I soon whizzed past a couple of ‘Borrowdale’ runners on a slippery limestone descent in my new ‘sticky’ fell shoes. The track turned into a flat road so I set a good pace (knowing I had a steep climb in front of me).

Through a couple of (annoying) swing gates and up the steep climb to the trig point at the top of Arnside Knott. Made slightly easier with lots of cheers from passing ramblers and my family up for the day to watch. Back down from the trig as fast as I could over loose rocks and limestone. The annoying swing gates worked in my favour as my running opponent ‘Helm Hill’ just in front of me got stuck! and I caught and passed him. I set a good pace again on the tarmac through New Barns Bay and back into the woods, I managed to catch a group of 3 lads and overtook them on the descent back into Hollins Farm, Silverdale. The cake and beer was well deserved for the 160 runners.

Chorley Fire 10K

Described by the organisers as a great country route around the local villages of Euxton and Astley Vilage. This is an undulating two lap course on very quiet roads.

Stephen Hall and Kevin O’Brien took part with Stephen finishing in 21^st place overall with a time of 38:49 and Kevin O’ Brien was 349^th with a time of 1:01:53. 409 runners took part.

Raindrops keep falling

Storm Abigail did her best but it wasn’t enough to deter our hardy Harriers. You have been on the roads, fells and parks as always giving it your all. An international flavour again this week with Clayton Harriers popping up at parkrun in New Zealand and the Rock ‘n’ Roll marathon in Las Vegas.

Juniors at Large

Congratulations to Ellie Root in the ESAA Cross Country Cup regional finals in Stockton on Tees on Sat 7^th November. She ran in the inter girls (year 9/10) and was 3rd counter in her team, in 20th place. The team have qualified for the finals in Bedford on 5th December.

Well done also to Dexta and Liberty Thompson who ran in the U11 boys and U13 girls races of the West Yorkshire League in Keighley on Saturday 14^th November. They both ran well but are listed as guest runners and not counted in the places. By my reckoning, Dexta was in equal 5^th place and Liberty was in 36^th. Well done both of you!

Todmorden 5k

On a somewhat soggy night, 7 Clayton-le-Moors Harriers made the trip to Todmorden for the first of the winter 5k series. Dan Balshaw finished in 2^nd place and together with Matthew Duckworth and Garry Wilkinson was part of the 1^st place mens team running for the “Running4CF” charity.

Dunnerdale Fell Race

Dunnerdale is a classic short race round the tiny but rugged fells between the Lickle and the Duddon valleys. The scenery is superb, the course is tough and varied, you get a pie and there’s a very nice pub at the finish.

RunFurther AGM & Presentation

The RunFurther AGM and presentation was held in the Pendle Inn at Barley after the Tour of Pendle. With a 4th overall and 1st Vet 50 for Martin plus a 6th place for our team (Martin Terry, Andy Armstrong and Nick Olszewski) we are definitely making our presence felt in the ultra scene.

The Runfurther race series is an annual championship based round 12 off-road Ultra running races in the UK. They don’t organise the races, just the tournament scoring. You can join in for free (although you’ll have to pay to enter the races of course). The races change from year to year, but there are usually a number of old favourites in the series, and they try to stick to lower-cost races as far as is practical.

The Tinto Hill Race (7Km, 460m)

It was a bit of a pilgrimage (of sorts). When I was at University (studying Statistics) I undertook a research project on fell running! The purpose was to use statistical techniques to create a formula to predict times for fell races. Well as part of my research I went, with the then chairman of the Scottish Hill Runners Association (SHRA) – Alan Farningham, to observe the race scene. The race I went to observe was the Tinto Hill Race. Alan actually finished 5th (32:26 – running for Gala).

Registration is at Symington Village Hall (a 10 min drive to the start) – so early registration is advised to get a “good parking” spot. The village itself is only 15 mins from M6 – which makes it relatively accessible for us “southern” runners! The SHRA hold their AGM in the village hall at the conclusion of the prize giving – that might be the reason for the fairly large field, 244 this year.

From my previous visit (11th November 1989) – I can only recall a line of pylons and a hill in the distance. This time, with the benefit of what such a race entails, I was able to recce the first part of the climb, before the start. I have run the whole route in the summer – different conditions from race day. The route is a straightforward “up and back” following the main walkers path to the summit. The path is fairly eroded, similar in many ways to the main path up Pendle from the nick, but climbing from the start. However after ½ mile there was a “kissing gate”, yes there was choice of routes (flagged) but Scottish racing rules must be different – everybody went over the barbed wire fence! The first climb (to just under Totherin Hill – 479m) was very reasonable, we contoured under the “top” and followed a routine of plateau, climb, plateau and a final push to the summit (707m). Anticlockwise around a boulder strewn peak before taking the fast descent to the finish, following the same route.

After a forecast of wind and rain it was a relief to arrive at the foot of Tinto hill to cold (6°C) but dry weather. The top of the hill was shrouded in cloud and when we reached the summit there was a wee bit of snow just to make things more interesting (a couple of inches)! Overall conditions were great. On a personal note, I did not climb well but was more than happy with my descent; nobody went past me (and no I was not last at the top)!

I would thoroughly recommend this race to those wanting a great short winter race with character. I had a good number of conversations with “friends not yet met” (WB Yeats) and I will be returning in the future.

P. S.I note here some observations for race organisers (that I have not come across before).

Full body cover was required, as well as map, compass etc. Rather than having to queue to have this checked 10 mins before the start (or at registration – when all your gear is still in your car!); you took your “kit” to the start line to confirm you “had everything” and your race number was signed! Allowing you to proceed with your warm-up. The allowed for a smoother start to some FRA races. However, there was no counting to the number at the start line – a whole debate in itself.

Tour Of Pendle

With a weather forecast full of doom, gloom and Storm Abigail set to batter us, the organisers took the difficult decision to switch to a bad weather route. The response was a mixture of relief from some and disappointment from others. In the event, the really foul weather waited until later in the day. A tough call but the right one by the organisers.

422 hardy fell runners lined up to tackle what is still a pretty tough 13/14 mile course albeit with a mere 3000ft of climb, the last couple of killer climbs being bypassed on the bad weather route. Still a hard challenge in anyone’s book. 409 crossed the finish line.

Chris Holdsworth had a phenomenal run in a brand spanking new pair of shoes and finished in 2^nd place. After last year’s event he’d had a bone to pick with this race and has certainly put in the training to tackle it. A great result for Chris ( new shoes not quite so pretty at the end, however!)

Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon – Las Vegas

Well done Nikky Kay who ran in the Rock ‘n’ Roll marathon in Las Vegas over the weekend which she described as the best of times and the worst of times. The first half went well but the second half was a bit more troublesome as a result of a troublesome knee. Our Nikki, didn’t let that stop her though and finished in a time of 5:26:04

Preston 10 Mile Road Race

A quartet of Harriers took to the roads around Hutton for this 10 mile road race. Kevin Davies was the first Clayton male finisher in 52^nd place overall and in a time of 01:05:25. Fabienne Richmond was our first lady in 117^th place overall and with a time of 01:10:17. They were joined by fellow clubmates Ted Orrell and Clare Wilson who finished in 01:28:47 and 01:35:06 respectively.

Skylines, windmills and lots of mud

Mud, mud, mud and more mud. It’s been a bit of a dirty weekend for our hardy Harriers! A little bit of wind and rain doesn’t really get in the way of such a tough bunch. You’ve been ploughing through cross country, up and down fell and along blustery promenades with gusto this week. There’s even been a bit of cyclocross as well.

Lee Mill Fell Relays – sign ups

This relay event, on Sunday 29^th November, is set in the Lee Mill Quarry site. 10km / 6.2m & Climb: 340m / 1115ft. Teams of four runners. All four runners will run individual over a 10k flagged course.

Weekly Roundup – Assistant Editor required!

If you’re one of the around 400+ people who view our website news roundup each week and want to help ensure its continued publication then this is the job for you! Our Media Manager, Adrienne Olszewska, does a fantastic job producing the weekly roundups but is not able to produce the roundups all 52 weeks of the year ( because I do like to go on holiday occasionally !).So, the club is looking for a Website News Editor to produce the weekly roundup approximately once a month. Good writing and IT skills are needed for this important role. You’ll also need to be able to commit to finding around four hours to produce each roundup so that publication is normally on Monday.

Red Rose Cross Country League – Hyndburn

Mud, mud, glorious mud! After what seemed like a never-ending downpour the rain sort of stopped and one thing was for certain; there would be mud. Lots and lots of it! There’s a slightly evil start to the race that involves contouring round an incline and the U11 boys who started first ended up with half the field sliding down the hill! So depending on your attitude to the black stuff it was either a heavenly course or something not so nice.

Shepherds Skyline

Described as a fast, muddy course – with a steep descent off Stoodley Pike for the kamikaze descenders, immediately followed by a stiff climb back up the hill for the stout-legged amongst you. 232 runners completed the course. Eighteen Clayton-le-Moors Harriers took part in this race which was also the final race of the current club fell championship.

Ilkley Cyclocross

The mud arrived.

The world of Cyclocross has been waiting for the mud ever since the season started and, finally, this weekend delivered it in lumps. Great big sticky lumps that bind together with grass and leaves, that render expensive bikes near useless and gets everywhere. The kind of mud that takes days to clean off the bike

Ilkley Cross is a low key club run event that combines most of the best bits of Cross in a compact course at the Ilkley Lido. It has fast sweeping sections, tight technical hairpins, treacherously boggy climbs and steep descents between the trees into gloop filled bomb holes. What’s not to like!

Two Harriers made the trip to Ilkley. Paul Hesketh had a score to settle; having failed to finish two races due to mechanical problems he openly admitted to having ‘spat the dummy’ at his last race and thrown his bike in the hedge. He had better luck this time and claimed a podium position with his third place Vet finish. I came significantly further down the field and looked a lot filthier, thanks to a ‘technical sit-down’ on one of the off camber hairpins. We also managed to dodge the rain, which started after the presentation had finished.

All in all; a successful weekend; with plenty more muddy fixtures to look forward to!

Paul Hesketh was third overall and third vet, Andrew Armstrong was 12th, field of 47.

Wadsworth Half Trog

A local classic taking in all the best terrain of the full Trog, without the full distance. Plenty of varied tough terrain. And perhaps a bit of mud! Jeffrey Pickup and Richard Bellaries took part in this 9.3 mile race with 1400ft of climb.

Amanda Duffy at the Windmill 10k

We arrived at Lytham green on not the best of days to be racing. Still abit of wind and rain won’t put us runners off! As it was Remembrance Sunday we had a 2 minute silence and then the race was off. It was a slightly different route than last year which took us off the green and on the road down towards Fairhaven Lake, we ran a lap around the lake and back on to the sea front only to be hit by very strong winds! It was a battle back down towards the windmill to finish back on Lytham green. Overall an excellent race

The foul weather didn’t put too many of our hardy Harriers off on Saturday morning with a pretty good turnout all things considered. The exception being Bianca Bennett who continues her tour of Australian parkruns by taking part in the St Peters parkrun in Sydney where the weather was considerably better than here in blighty!
