10.30am Sunday 30th March from Accrington Town Hall.
World famous Accrington runner and Clayton legend, Ron Hill will lead hundreds onto Hyndburn’s roads as he puts his name to a brand new 10K event in the borough. This event also celebrates the 40th anniversary of Hyndburn Borough Council.
Starting from Accrington Town Hall the event takes runners up Manchester Road to Baxenden before looping back down the tree-lined, former railway track ‘greenway’, finishing back in the town centre.
The Ron Hill Accrington 10K is open to anyone over the age of 18 with prizes available for the first three runners home in the categories of male, female and veterans. It costs £8 for affiliated running club members or £12 on the day.
Charities and good causes locally set to benefit from the event include Finley’s Disney Dream, East Lancashire Hospice and Derian House Children’s Hospice.

You can now access the Feb ‘Harrier’ here. This month we feature Richard ‘Bomber’ Bellaries’ exploits on Pendle, a report on the Barrow XC fixture and details of this year’s club championship races, as well as all the usual Run of the Month competitions, fixtures, training and results.
A little belatedly, the January Newsletter can be found here. It has details of the Club Celebration and Awards’ Evening on 1st February, 2014 Club Championship races, English and British Fell Championship counters, and a New Year’s message from the President, plus all the usual features, recent results and fixtures for January and February.
While running in Stainscomb recently (near Stan’s hut), Richard Bellaries came across a shell (i.e. bomb)! When he later led the police back to the spot, they confirmed that it was still live!!
So…. BEWARE. All the western end of Pendle was used as a live firing range in the past. Occasionally unexploded shells emerge from the peat – especially after periods of prolonged rain. If you see anything that looks like a bomb – it probably is. Follow Rich’s example: do not disturb and report it to the constabulary.
Welcome to the latest edition of the Harrier – a few days later than planned – my apologies. Download it now to get reports on the UK Fell & Hill running Relays in N Wales, the Tour of Pendle and the FRA Presentation, hosted by the club at Mytton Fold Hotel, plus all the usual features, results and fixtures. Please take special note of the article on p3 by Mike Eddleston regarding annual subscriptions, which are due at the end of the month. December Newsletter 2013
Highlight of this month’s newsletter is a great report from our fast-improving wheel chair athlete: Anthony Gotts on his trip to the Lisbon Marathon. The Newsletter also has a report on the Ian Hodgson Relay and all the usual features: Run of the Month, Covering Old Ground, results and fixtures’ list. Read it here: November Newsletter 2013
The October Newsletter is now available. It features a welcome message from the club’s new chair: Jim Hickie, along with details of the changes to the committee at the AGM. There are also details of the winter training session and the usual fixtures list, which includes the dates of both the Red Rose and Mid Lancs Cross Country Leagues, so you have no excuse for not turning up. We need to up our game now that Trawden AC have entered the Mid Lancs! There are also lots of results, great achievements by the juniors and TWO Runs of the Month. October Newsletter 2013
A raiding party from Horwich RMI swept all before them at the latest edition of Thieveley Pike fell race. With the winner and three other runners in the first five, it didn’t take long to work out that the team prize was going to Horwich. It turned out that winner, Joe Mercer and his cohorts were using the race as a trial for the upcoming October relays. I’m not sure whether he was in contention for the relays, but club mate, Peter Henegan won the MV70 award in a good time, with many younger runners in his wake.
Another super vet performance came from Bowland’s Rowena Browne who defeated all the young ‘uns to take the ladies’ prize, while Calder Valley took the ladies’ team prize. Twice former winner, Andy Wrench took the men’s vet prize and, keeping it in the family, Jamie Wrench was first MU18 finisher. Back to the vets, Mervyn Keys (Rossendale) was first MV50 in 14th place. MV60 winner, Jack Holt was the first Clayton man home, a feat replicated by Linda Lord, first FV60.
On a perfect day for running – bright and sunny, with a cooling breeze – over 140 runners enjoyed unusually dry conditions in the start field (thanks to new land owner, James Bracewell) and on the fell. It was pleasing to see so many runners, with competition from the first local cross country fixture and the English Championship Race at Edale Skyline on the same weekend.
It was great to see James had revived the traditional sheep dog trial and introduced a dog agility course. For me the only drawback was the smell of fried bacon emanating from the food stall sited about 10 metres from the finish line. Despite the distraction of a rumbling stomach, I managed to operate the timer without error, for a change!
My sincere thanks go to James and the other two landowners for allowing us to run across their land; also to my faithful band of helpers from Clayton Harriers who, once again, made sure that proceedings ran smoothly and safely.
