We get knocked down but we get up again! Cross Country season has kicked off with some great results for the club and there have a few bumps and bruises too. Also this week, you have been branching out into cyclo-cross and triathlons and doing rather well. As always you have been spotted on the roads, trails and fells and the track to as lots of you came together for the AGM track meet.
Your Team Captains 2015/16
There are some changes to the team captains. Angela Shian and Irene Roche are continuing their roles of Road and Cross Country Ladies Captains respectively. Jean Brown has stepped down from the Fell position and Kath Brady is now the Ladies Fell Captain.
For the men, Tom Brewster has stepped down as Men’s Road Captain and is replaced by Chris Holdsworth. Chris Holdsworth is also taking the vacant Men’s Cross Country Captain role. Dave Motley is continuing as Men’s Fell Captain.
North West Junior Triathlon Series
Eleanor and Grace Root completed the NW Junior Triathlon series on 19th September, clocking up 19 Aquathlons/Triathlons between them. They competed in Carlisle, cycling on a tough grass course where Ellie managed to pick up a 3rd place. In the final race of the season at Salt Ayre in Lancaster, Grace put in a strong performance to come 12th in the T1’s with big sister Ellie coming 9th in a really strong field of T2’s. Both girls have worked very hard and are looking forward to the presentation evening in January where they will be able to celebrate completing the series.

AGM Club Track Races
Over 60 club members of all ages turned up at Seedhill track for a set of track races.
For the younger members, there was a 2k (5 lap) race held first. 20 youngsters took part. Dexta and Liberty easily took the top 2 positions, using the shorter distance as a warm up event for the racing they would be doing over the weekend. It was a first time race for a number of our younger members and they all looked to be enjoying the competition immensely, so much so that Emily Johnson got quite carried away and completed an extra lap!

Race B was up next, this was billed as a race for club members with a 5K time of 21-30 minutes and there was a mix of junior and senior members. Ryan Clarke had a blistering run, hotly pursued by fellow juniors Simon Wilshaw and Lennon Jackson. Eleanor Root lead the girls race. They certainly gave the seniors a run for their money. First seniors were Angela Shian and Alison Dugdale with Andy Quinn leading in the senior men.

Red Rose Cross Country League – Astley Park
What a tremendous start to the cross country season! An excellent turnout of juniors meant we were able to field teams in the U11 Girls, U11 Boys, U13 Girls, U13 Boys (one of our runners is missing from the results) and U17 Men. We earned some great team positions with first places for U11 Boys, U13 Girls, U17 Men, and Over 45 Ladies. Second place positions for our Senior Men, Over 40 Men and Over 55 Ladies.
There were some great individual performances as well. Dexta Thompson won the U11 Boys race with Jenson Bentham and Finlay Stubbs finishing in the top 10 to make their 1st place team position. Millie Stubbs and Liberty Thompson finished in the top ten in the U13 Girls race. Jackson McKay was 3rd in the U13 boys. Top ten finishes were the order of the day for our U17 Men team as well. Helena Leathley was our first Clayton lady finisher and new Men’s Cross Country Captain, Christopher Holdsworth, was our first Clayton male finisher. Barry Mitchell and Richard Lawson were 1st and 3rd Vet 70 men.
Alas! Three trips to the medics with a dodgy knee, a turned ankle and a fall. Everyone is doing well, no lasting damage and, more importantly, all eager to come back and race another day!

Thieveley Pike Fell Race
Report from Michelle Butschok
This was my 2nd attempt at Thieveley Pike Fell Race; loved it the 1st time and it didn’t disappoint this time round. There was great weather for it and a great turnout. The 3rd hill is still a tough sting in the tail but I managed to pass a couple up the hill and beat last year’s time, as did my fellow Claytoner Rachel Todd so smiles all round!

English Schools Fell Running Championships
Report from Vicky McKay
English Schools Fell Championship race took place at Mytholmroyd. Jackson Mckay was up against the fantastic Bofra runners that he has been chasing all fell season (Fraser Sproul ,Sam Smith and Alexander Thompson). He managed to beat 2 of them to come 3rd. Fraser 1st and a boy from Bradford 2nd. A fantastic achievement as it was 3k with unforgiving hills. Well done Jackson xx
Well done to Briony Holt for her fantastic first half only to be snatched away with a superman dive. Great way to descend though in the back of the Mountain Rescue Vehicle. Hope it is not as bad as it looks, you did yourself proud though with the way you behaved. You will have to show them next year!

Kendal Sprint Triathlon
Nikki Kay took art in this event which involved a 400m swim, 18K bike ride and 5k run.
She reports;
It was a very well organised, friendly, and welcoming event. Unfortunately, I hadn’t put the training in and so didn’t perform greatly. I finished in 1 hour 54. But that didn’t matter – it was a learning curve and a very enjoyable one at that. The great thing about a triathlon is that you all start at different times and so whilst out on the course no one really knows where you are position wise and everyone is so friendly. I will definitely be signing up for more.. with a little more preparation next time.
Littleborough 10K
Described by the organisers as a fast and picturesque course that is run on good runnable roads, paths and some country lanes. The course, after the first start section is on a small gradual decline in terms of elevation. This makes the race feel down hill and makes for a really enjoyable running experience.
Dan Balshaw had a good run finishing in third place with a time of 36:16 and he was joined by fellow clubmates Stephen Biscomb, Ian Hargreaves and Elouise Pemberton.
